      Miku sensei, I have been learning both Japanese (5 years) and Thai (2 years) …. For Japanese, I can read and speak much better than listen but for Thai I can listen and speak quite better than read ….. I think I have used some wrong methods (self study) to learn Japanese (I waste 5 years) …… now very SAD ….(ni hon go o gonenni benkyou shideimasu …. hetana mama)

    I remember shopping for a tie in a store in Tokyo, and after I picked out the one I wanted, I started to put the ones I had looked at back where they were. The saleswomen said "そのまま大丈夫." When you hear something like that, you remember it forever. That expression - and it's potential variants - stuck with me for future use. This video really helps expand my understanding and use of まま。

  • @joeymorangarza

    Holy crap, I actually learned a lot tonight! Literally this 30 min video took me almost 2 hours cause I couldn't stop pausing and repeating. Don't get me wrong, I follow a lot of other channels, use a lot of different apps, and have tons of .pdf books and courses with audio, but it's only when I'm with you, Miku, that it all finally clicks -- you have definitely found your calling. Thank you for being dedicated enough to expertly penetrate through my thick skull. I effin love you!

    I knew まま roughly meant something like "way" from the context of このまま, but still didn't really get the nuance of it before now.
    For instance I had a little bit of trouble figuring out the song lyrics; "この世界愛してままで行ってほしいよ".
    Because I only knew まま as 'way', I was interpreting this as "I want you to love this world in a way" lol.
    But now I know it means "I want you to keep loving this world".

    • @khajitt
      @khajitt 4 роки тому +2

      まま means "as it is"

      Better visualise まま as meaning "(unchanged) condition".
      TEREBI wo tsuketa mama de neta.
      I slept in the (unchanged) condition of leaving the TV on.
      I slept leaving the TV on.

Next month I will graduate from my Master’s degree in Japan and I’m planning to study for my PhD degree in Japan so I’m trying my best to study Japanese 😊日本語が話せないまま日本に行った。今、まだ日本語が話せない。

      さ by itself means "come now" or "so..."

    • @Thesimon0206
      @Thesimon0206 4 роки тому +24

      adjective + ~さ just turns the adjective into a noun for example:
      優しい (kind) -> 優しさ (kindness)
      にぎやか (lively) -> にぎやかさ (liveliness)
      For i-adjectives, just drop the final い and add さ
      For na-adjectives, just add on さ at the end.
      Hope that helped :)

    Thanks for the video! Just one slight correction if I may :)
    When you say 3年ヨガをしてるけど、下手なまま。
    In English the correct tense is "I've been practicing yoga" rather than "I'm practicing yoga", I believe.
    I think it's also the reason why some learners tend to translate it back into Japanese as していた* rather than している。
