    I have to add my thanks for creating and sharing this beautiful video. I was fortunate to grow up in the Midwest and see these gorgeous butterflies every year. To think that a single, fragile Monarch flies 2,000 miles- by itself, not as a member of a huge flock, the way some birds do... I am in awe.

    I once found an unusually large tomato worm when I was about 10 years old. Being the curious little girl I was, I put it in a plastic jar and made a little habitat, even a little stick for it to make a cocoon on when it was ready! That night, it was busy "shooting" silk around the jar and in the stick. I watched it for hours as it formed its cocoon. It stayed in the cocoon for so long, my mom tried to throw it away because she thought it was dead (and stinky!) I didn't let her. After a few weeks, it emerged from the cocoon and hung upside down from the top to dry. 2-3 days later, its wings were dry and it was time to release him. But something was terribly wrong with my beautiful Polyphemus Moth: it's abdomen was too large! It was so large and heavy that when we attempted to release him, he couldn't get in the air. I decided he couldn't survive in the wild. So my mom gave me a laundry hamper and a cotton ball with sugary water and some nectar. It survived for about a week and eventually died. I wish he could have just flown away and lived longer than he had, but I enjoyed my time with him and it was worth everything. Even though some may think he was just a bug, I loved him.

      Actually, female Polyphemus Moths (which indeed have an enormous abdomen) refuse to fly until a male finds them (using the females’ secreted pheromones) and mates with them. Just letting you know for future reference 😉

    • @tijgerdezwerfkat
      @tijgerdezwerfkat 10 років тому

      ernest finch They can, but Milkweed plants have their defenses against insects. Some milkweeds have Toxic substances stored in latex and store them in plant tubes called laticifers, or dissolved in waxes on the surface.
      When a herbivore/insect chews part of the plant these toxins are released.
      But insects can also inactivate the plants defense system by cutting the laticifers first, there is an ongoing arms race between insects and plants. In your case maybe the caterpillers are "winning".

    We have raised monarchs two of the last three years. All we do is go out and look for the little caterpillars, put them in a box, feed them fresh milk weed every day. And wait. It is an AMAZING process! The real life colors are totally awsome.
    One of the years we raised over 90 butterflies. It is a good experience for children.

    What the fuck. Nature is amazing. Imagine us shedding our skin and having a weird shell under neath that our true body forms in then we break out of that shell with completely different shaped legs but we automatically know how to walk with the new legs. Then we also suddenly have wings that grow and we also just automatically know how to move them???? and then fly????? what even is life

    • @amaramichaels2064

      tyla z LOL. Maybe that's what shoulder blades are REALLY for. Did you know that the pupa produces enzymes that digest the caterpillar into a primordial soup, which is then used to build the butterfly ? Did you know that humans have inactive enzymes whose purpose is unknown. I was going to end with " food for thought " lol, but maybe that's not appropriate.

    My garden being located in the so-called Monarch butterfly corridor, it is visited by a big number of M.B. every year. They especially like two Butterfly trees I keep for them in the garden; but at the end of the season, I usually trim the overgrown B. trees, so I don't know if I'm doing something against the M.B. reproduction... It was interesting to find here that the M.B. puts its eggs on the outer side of the leaves... I thought the eggs were deposited in the flowers, but no... What could I do to make the M.B. reproduction in my garden more efficient, or at least, how could I create more favorable conditions? I usually don't use any chemicals in my garden, so its ecosystem is very healthy...

    I look below and see arguments and not respect for different beliefs. I think we should be destroyed. Somehow humans manage to kill the beauty inside of this mystery for me. They take the joy from me. Chew it up. Spit it out, and step on it... right after I think to myself. Maybe the initial force behind this beauty actually had a purpose for this gorgeous thing that has come to be.. It's a blessing to be one of these amazing creatures.. But the people around me. I'd rather be nothing at all than be one of you. I'd rather be nothing than contribute to destroying this beautiful place, and spreading the word of truth about life when the fact is I know no truth about anything.. and neither do you..

    • @OfficialMuffiin
      @OfficialMuffiin 9 років тому +3

      Completely 100000% agree with you. Humans are vultures and I honestly believe we should all be killed off and leave this beautiful planet and its creatures in peace.

      Thank you.. It means a lot to me that another feels the same that I do. You believing that may seem dark to most, But to me it means you have a great heart that should be treasured forever.

    • @OfficialMuffiin
      @OfficialMuffiin 9 років тому

      Thank you also, I normally don't voice my opinion on this matter because people think I'm 'heartless'. It's humans themselves that are heartless because I know for a fact that in the the future, this planet will be lifeless because of humans thinking that this beautiful world belongs to them. I hope you have a great day/life. Sam Mahon

      Master Markus Because it's incredibly easy to get tired of typical human bullshit 'markus', everyday humans make unbelievably idiotic choices killing us all with a smile on their faces. The solution is known but the majority of dipshits will never adhere to it. Unless you have a way to make everyone change put dirt in your mouth and be quiet, you're annoying.
