Benjamin is a powerhouse. Somehow he's widely appreciated and at the same time still underrated. People know he's a great singer, but they don't realise just how great he really is.
Well Ben suffers from some weird condition which affects his vocalchord when he sings, thus affects his singing performance. Most fans let alone other people don't know that so they judge is poor performance when he is suffering from that condition. The genre he sings/play in doesn't help either to the major public. Shame indeed.
I had a pleasure to talk to him about how he learned to scream - he said he just having fun with his vocals while driving and came up with some stuff that felt comfortable and cool
I think one of my favorite things about Ben is his ability to switch between aggressive and smooth vocals so fluidly. I use his songs to get a feel for the switches all the time.
FINALLY!!! There's a how to guide for every other singer but Ben, and in my opinion he is the greatest rock singer of all time and he deserves a How To!
@Ethan, yes, Ben screams sometimes but his voice has changed. Probably did damage his cords. He let out a few little screams when I saw then in concert last summer. They still sound great though!
Your explanation of the Benjamin's voice is so spot on cause the man has such an effortless way of going from screaming to softer tones! By far, my favorite rock singer of the modern era and love Breaking Benjamin's stuff. Thank you for doing this video because this is stuff that is often overlooked for being too intense for people. You have such command of the vocals that it is super impressive! Love when you get into the more higher pitch parts of their songs and show you own spin on the vocals! Never stop making these videos!
The fact all these lessons are free and available to anyone is a real testament to Chris - I've learnt more from these than years of aimless vocal practice! Thanks so much!
As a teenager this guy inspired me to get started making music. Not the biggest name in the game but certainly a huge inspiration to his fans. Thanks for the video
I remember going to a Breaking Benjamin acoustic show in Anaheim, CA. Burnley started talking to the people about how he took singing lessons as a kid and he'd do this funny vocal noise as for practice. It was quite funny.

You should analyze Pete loeffler from Chevelle, which Benjamin gets inspiration from and he uses techniques sort of similar to chino from deaftones and uses heavily aggressive vocals along with light whisper like singing and it would be interesting how you would analyze his singing.., Love the videos!
When you're doing gutterals like those in songs like diary of jane, I think it's actually important to lay off of vocal cracking. While you can find rough and gravely vocals, those are clean. They rely more on compression and tongue placement.

Finaly someone makes a great explanasion how to sing like Ben! Love how you do it! Im a big fan of BB and love their music, but It's first when you try making vocal covers you finds out how hard it is to sing BBs songs that sounds so easy when just listening to them. Greetings from Sweden! Keep up the great job and do your thing!
Idk as much as I love BB and Ben's vocals even since the beginning of the band he's never been able to hit the high notes live that you hear on the album's. The biggest most noticable thing he does live is when he hits high notes and I mean every time he PULLS AWAY FROM THE MIC AND FALLS SHORT. EVERY SINGLE TIME. OR HE LETS THE CROWD SING IT LOL. Simple as that. The studio has done wonders for him
If you watch live, clean performances he can hit the notes. I’m no professional, but I imagine that doing shows back to back like he does greatly affects his range even after the first show. I’ve heard interviews of singers saying they get too into it and blow out their vocal cords because of the crowds energy.
Honestly best free video I've ever seen. Any other vocal coach youtuber would've given about 3 minutes of this video and then made you pay for the rest on Patreon
So basically when screaming, at least your approach. is to find a note, "break" your voice by rapidly switching between falsetto (head voice) and chest voice. This rattle helps you find false chords because it rattles them. After that you have your students push from their diaphragm (support muscles) to further engage that false chords (which the compression helps target). And all while doing so you teach what most vocal teachers online forget to teach, which is how to add your voice safely to the mix without destroying it. Please explain to me if I got anything wrong and also explain to me why these are free XD
Great video as always! Ben is one of my favorite rock singers. I would recommend for a next video Pete Loeffler from Chevelle, his voice is very expressive and breathy, and as you say, he explores a lot the voice break. A very interesting voice.
You even mentioned how when they play live the other guys help him with the high notes. That wasn't the case till they replaced 90 percent of the band. The new guys mainly the bass player sings all the high notes. But before the new guys came in Ben had to sing the high stuff on his own and he was never able to come close to his studio voice.

So glad you enjoy it!
Thank you so much!
The studio has done wonders for him
Agreed

Welcome to modern music. Production does wonders for everyone
Thanks for watching and commenting!! I'm glad you got a lot out of it!
The inclusion of the Iris cover was such a nice surprise! Awesome video - can't wait for the next one.
Right. The studio stuff is amazing. Arranged and produced meticulously
Love breaking Benjamin so glad you made this vid
