The Tiguan was named by a naming contest, so they got what they deserved.
As far as the wind names go, the Golf is named for the Gulf Stream, the Jetta for the Jet Stream. The Passat is supposedly named for a trade wind, Vento literally means “wind,” and as was mentioned, the Bora and Scirocco are named for other types of winds.
Then there are cars named for figures of mythology with Eos and Atlas (and there is some argument that Arteon is perhaps named for Artemis, although the official word on that name is they modified the Latin word “artem,” which means “art.”
Volkswagen claims that they’ve never had a naming scheme... Somehow, I don’t believe them.

    Give you some Spanish translations:
    - Audi q3. Q3 in Spanish is pronounced cu tres. Cutres means Tacky. They keep the name.
-the pajero. In Spanish from Spain means wanker. They actually changed the name for Montero (mountain’s guard). If you ever see a group of teenagers taking pics with a Pajero, you know why now..
We also hear there was a Nissan moco (moco means snot in Spanish) and the colour of the pics is always green XD
PS: espada is the plain word for sword. The sword used in bullfights is called estoque.
PS2: most of seat are cities/towns in Spain but for Seat Mii.

Hi Matt. Another secret name that I've seen is for Kia Ceed. "CE" are the initials for European products (Ceed was the car which with Kia entered the European market) and "ED" means E-uropean D-esign because the car was built in the new facilities of the company in Romania. But CEED also sounds like "SEED" which (among others definitions) means "any of a number of stronger competitors in a sports tournament who have been assigned a specified position in an ordered list with the aim of ensuring that they do not play each other in the early rounds".
I think Kia put some effort on that. Cheers!!!

Now, VW still made the names in question so it wasn't totally up to people to make a name and I still don't know how or why VW came up with a portmanteau of tiger and iguana to get Tiguan or why they felt that those two animals embodied the spirit of a small eco crossover, but that's what happened I guess.

Hi Mat from Greece. You MISSED a stellar example of a bad name that actually made the manufacturer to CHANGE the car's name when marketed in Greece.
    The car is SEAT MALAGA.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEAT_M%C3%A1laga
The Málaga was marketed in Greece as the SEAT Gredos, after the Spanish mountain range Sierra de Gredos, because the word Málaga was considered too similar to malakas, a ubiquitous Greek swear word.
