  • I love growing different unusual fruits and vegetables, so much so I even give talks on some of the weird things I've grown. And the Achocha is up there as one of the weirdest, but also one of the easiest! In fact, it is almost a little too easy to grow!
    Hundreds of fruits are produced every year with very little effort, more effort is put into controlling it's growth than anything else! But these spiky fruits are tasty and prolific.
    I'd love to know your favourite unusual fruit or vegetable to grow! I have three talks on the subjects and I'm always looking for more things to try in my garden.
    Thanks for watching!

    I picked up a packet of these from the Leominster Seed Swap I had 9 seeds and all have germinated within two days. I can't wait to get them going after the frost has gone. For now they are on the windowsill. Many thanks :)

      They're a fun one to grow. Thanks for letting me know, always interesting where people get the seeds from. I did loads of packets for the hereford seed swap which I help out at every year, so it's nice to know they go a bit further!

      I stumbled across this video, whilst preparing for my allotment which I should get in the next few weeks (end September) and saw you were in Leominster, my home town. I missed the seed swap, so I wish you success and hope to get some seed locally or online soon ready for next year. Such a small world.

      Thanks! I enjoyed making this one!
      To be honest the achocha is also a fruit!
      I need to get some white currants in, like little pearls.

    Fab video! Where do you get the seeds? I’d love to try this. I can only find cucamelon seeds online (which I’ve grown before).

      You can get these from the real seed catalogue or the heritage seed library. I do sometimes add a packet to the items I sell in my etsy parcels.

    I have had trouble getting this one plant. If ever you want to swap with me say a dragon fruit plant or naranjilla with you let me know 👍 Mandy

      Where are you based Mandy? If you're UK based I can post you some seeds when I have them saved.

      Let me know if you want anything in swap. Do you have a website as I don’t?

      @@truthforall1303 my website is my blog. On the top bar on there you can find my contacts and send me an email (I won't put it here as I gets picked up by spammers) and when I have some seed ready I'll send you a packet if you like?

      Hello, I really envy you that you can grow small achocha. I really want to plant it, but there are no achocha seeds in Taiwan. I tried to find a Chinese seller on the Internet to help me import small achocha seeds, which cost one US dollar each. But I was deceived, what I received was not the achocha seeds, I was very disappointed and angry!
      Nice to see your video, best wishes to you!

      @@user-gf2si9 ah that's a shame! You'd only need one seed, as it comes back so freely!

    err... shouldnt their leaves be 5-7 lobed? Im confused...

    • @englishhomestead
      @englishhomestead  4 місяці тому +1

      There's some different varieties out there. I think the ones that fruit with a smooth skin have slightly different leaves.

    • @WibblyWobbly
      @WibblyWobbly 4 місяці тому

      @@englishhomestead made some digging, yours is probably a achoccilla species, lobed ones are either edulis, or pedata sp.

      @englishhomestead  4 місяці тому

      @WibblyWobbly interesting. I've tried some others, but when I said this is a brute the giant ones are unreal! They would swap the whole tunnel.
      Have you grown them?

    • @WibblyWobbly
      @WibblyWobbly 4 місяці тому

      @@englishhomesteadunfortunately no, not really. I've just sown regular pedata, which is lobed with small fruit.

    What about the soil, would it grow in clay soil?

    • @englishhomestead
      @englishhomestead  Рік тому +1

      It would probably need a but of organic matter mixed in, but it's very unfussy so should be fine.
