      great podcast, yet why does he take pharma drugs instead of ayurveda/plant extracts which are more powerful w/ less side effects, having worked at top 'organic' stores you learn the truth of longetivity based on nature not synthetics w/ more side effects which is why attia mentions canker sores! there is a reason he gets those

    Can't recommend Dr. Peter Atia's book Oultive enough. So much good info and relatability that it really helped me with my health goals. Down 160 lbs in less than 3 yrs thanks to these 2 amazing people and I cant thank them enough!!

    This episode points out the very clear difference between a clinician who cares about actual outcomes and a researcher who just looks at papers. Always appreciate Attia's scientific and clinical rigour.

    My grandmother, 105 years old, grew up in the countryside working physically every day, and with natural food mainly from self-cultivation and breeding, genetically in a centenarian family (her father died at 94, her last sister died at 99), self-conviction of being strong ( still affirms it), practical approach to life (despite the daughter of an alcoholic mother), no caloric restrictions but still current ability to self-regulate with regards to food intake (however, excellent appetite), lover of life, still sleeps many hours a day, grateful to God and his will. I believe that here are all the natural secrets of longevity

      My grandmother is 105 this year, poor diet of donuts, cakes and coffee her whole life and never exercised(also never smoked or drank). She currently has serve dementia and Alzheimer’s. Maybe if she lived ur grand mother’s life style she would be more independent in her old age. I think factor to long life span is genetics.

      I can name countless people living exactly the same dying at the age of 75 to 80. On my mother's side, living in the city, most people died at 90+, and on my dad's side, living 'natural', eating lots of self caught fish and eggs from the farm, they died in their 70s. The only smokers and casual users of alcohol were on my mother's side. All of this is anecdotal, nothing more.. And my dads family and ancestors were strong believers, and my mother's parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents were all atheists.

    I am a big fan of Peter Attia (and Huberman!). I've followed him since his first Ted talk over ten years ago. I observe that Peter gets uncomfortable (and rightfully so) when discussing supplements. Peter hesitates to discuss them because people take it as advice and automatically consume what he consumes. He acts like he has to jog his memory to recall what he takes, yet he takes them daily. I think it was his hesitancy and strong principles to list them out; to me, that is just another indicator of how responsible he is as a doctor. He even went as far as clarifying how insignificant supplements are compared to other things such as sleep, exercise, diet, etc. I really appreciate Peter for that. On the other hand, Huberman freely talks about what works for him and I also appreciate that. We are curious and we want to know what the experts know and thanks to him, we know a lot.

      sad that Sinclair has been on both of these podcasts and neither Attia nor Huberman challenged him on his research. Albeit Attias' was in 2019, but he certainly could have mentioned his name today alongside the others....who ironically have never been on his podcast.

    27km of hiking today and 1.5 hrs in gym; listened to this podcast + Peter Attia The Drive & The Proof with Simon Hill. Excellent, inspiring, educational. Don't be in an overfed state, RT, sleep, move, don't be miserable angry. My Pa said to me decades ago exercise wasn't practical, he smoked, died in his 70s, My other Grandpa was a paraplegic. Ma had osteoporosis, broke her hip, smoker died 70s, Other grandma breastcancer died 52. Glad, so lucky I am able to be educated.👩‍🏫

    That’s awesome Peter Attia helped continue the dog aging project that’s amazing.. I remember over half a decade ago many of Attias videos helped inspire interest in health science and know a ton of med students who’ve learned so much physiology for these videos

    Agree with Peter's comments re: nutrition, exercise, sleep, and mental health being the main pillars of optimal health with supplements being a secondary or tertiary concern. I would add avoiding alcohol as one of the main pillars.

    My friend had a small stroke and wasn't feeling very good. 6 weeks after her stroke, her doctor recommended NAD IV and it made a world of difference for her. Her concentration got better, and she had more energy. I get Take it for energy, and it takes care of my brain fog.

      ​@@katespicer276 I don't think Attia ever really disputes personalized experiences. He'd probably just attribute it to a placebo effect or note that there is no clear scientific evidence as to why the NAD is helping.

      David Sinclair is extremely convinced about the benefits of NR and NMN for increasing longevity and especially when paired with resveratrol. Dr. Huberman, how do you reconcile these extreme positions? It would be important to know. Thanks!

      @@gustoteam I do find the biological explanation of NMN and resveratrol quite convincing. However, as Attia said, its not consistent across different lab model. My personal take is if I can find NMN easy and cheap, I would take it cz theres no indication of harm either.

    Hi Dr. H, thanks for the informative episode and wise words about supplements. As a medical doctor myself, I would appreciate if you did an episode on kidney health. Many supplements and OTC medications can place stress and cause permanent damage on the kidneys, and the symptoms are not apparent until there is a 30-50% decline in kidney function. I feel the general public should be aware of this to make wise decisions about taking supplements. Thanks for what you do.

      Last year i took glutathione treatment thru IV and had a very bad kidney pain after the first session then I had to stop, definitely I would love to hear the kidney impact of those longevity treatments or general supplements.     I love how Dr. Attia confesses that much of the supplementation and/or protocols that people are doing to try to lengthen life span are a "leap of faith". As a 43 year old person (or any "non-young" person), I think this perfectly expresses how I feel. I know that a lot of these emerging findings in longevity are preliminary, and the limitations of the scientific method, funding, and regulations will llikely require decades of further study to verify them. But we don't have unlimited time to live, and every year spent waiting could be limiting the benefits that some of these things could bring. Ugh! I guess that is what life is about though, making decisions based on the best information you can obtain before those actions are significantly minimized or rendered obsolete by time.

    Love the Huberman Lab podcasts, and also Dr. Attia's podcasts. In this podcast, however, Dr. Attia mostly speaks in acronyms and language that require a medical doctor or PHD training in the subject matter. It would be appreciated is if the information could be expressed so that an audience composed of the general population could understand.

    Big applause !!! Incredible work Dr.Huberman on providing us your and your guests' summarised knowledge of many years of studying and research. Been a long time follower of your podcasts and I try to apply many of the tools in my routine.
    I have a topic in mind that I would really appreciated if you enlighten me and I think many individuals of the audience would also.
    I am talking about Multiple sclerosis (M.S) , some details of its biology (for the aficionados), the possible causes of that self immune disease ,the things to avoid and its relation to previous topics such as sleep, emotional/physical stress, healthy diet, exercise etc
    I was diagnosed almost 7 years ago as a young athletic 23 year old and still struggle to find high quality information on the matter...
    I am asking you because I trust your effort and interest in science .

    I loved the Titanic comparison. I think many people, including myself, put too much focus on supplements and neglect important things like sleep, exercise, and diet.
    I really enjoyed the deep dive on NMN and Resveratrol. It would be great to have similar discussions about other longevity supplements such as Fisetin, Quercetin, Spermidine, and Alpha Lipoic Acid.
    As others have mentioned, it would also be fantastic to hear Dr. David Sinclair's thoughts on NMN and Resveratrol.

    3 years prior taking NMN and resveratrol along with 16 hrs fasting I used to get flu and feel sick about 2 times per years and some times needed antibiotics. After starting this protocol , no more feeling sick al all. Just one day I felt down a little and to took a booster of NMN and that fixed me up in the same day. I think I will continue with this protocol. Great podcast

    I was really looking forward to this episode and I enjoyed it, but I found Dr Attia to be difficult to listen to at times. His delivery was quite abrupt and sounded a bit dismissive of Dr Huberman. Conversation didn’t flow very well. It was just off putting to me as it came across as a bit disrespectful. I respect Dr Attia’s knowledge but I think his delivery wasn’t great.
    Very informative podcast though, thanks Dr Huberman!
    Podcast suggestion: I’d love another episode on skin, touching on dermatitis and eczema.

      Can agree that the pair got into too many interruptions for the conversation to reach their usual level of quality.

      I am sort of on the other side of this opinion. I found it refreshing that Dr Attia was willing to "butt in". Dr. Huberman can sometimes turn a question into a monologue, where he starts to ask a question, then partially answers it himself, then answers it a different way, then splices on another related comment, and maybe yet another one, then eventually gets around to actually letting the guest answer. I am continually amazed by the patience of many of the guests at waiting out the monologue. That said, Dr. Huberman's podcasts are by far my favorites.

    To weigh in as a scientist from a different field. A lot of people may benefit from understanding that this is a pretty typical representation of Scientist vs Clinician dichotomy in my opinion. Scientists tend to be more open minded and curious, exploratory, hypothesis-driven, while any good clinician is more closed-off and places a huge emphasis on human clinical results - ie. evidence-based medicine. While evidence-based medicine is hands down the way to go for clinical practice, it also disregards a lot of animal data, possibilities, underlying biology, untested hypotheses, etc.
    Neither mindset is right nor wrong, and they synergize with one another.
    But the beautiful thing about this dichotomy, is that you don’t want your doctor testing hypotheses on you! And you don’t want scientists to be rigid and “by the books” or else new discoveries will not be made.
    Attia’s strength as a clinician is translating clinical results directly to patients. Huberman’s strength as a scientist is asking the questions that lead to future trials.

    21:20 about combining rapamycin with fasting. it's actually very popular in longevity community, as both treatments target mTor inhibition. there's few ideas around on why this would matter. some people think that anabolytic function of food will interfere with mtor inhibition by rapamycin. some just think those two are synergetic and together produce a stronger effect

    The part at 2:07:12 is so interesting! I would love a podcast on energy- I've taken physiology, cell bio, anatomy classes, but I still struggle to understand what 'energy' is - that feeling of improved mood, cognition, focus, vigor, etc.. But I'm so fascinated with what the mechanisms and pathways of increasing our energy is.
    Many people feel like absolute crap a lot of the time - and feeling more energy is by far the single biggest reinforcer of consistently exercising for me. I'd love to learn more about this.

      @@davidflorez1196 they are doing well, but it isn’t a controlled study as our patients are often improving diet, exercise and other aspects. So I wouldn’t be able to say whether improvements were due to rapamycin.

      How can one obtain repamycin? Is it by prescription only? Does topical application work or only ingested methods?

      @ it’s a prescription. The longevity studies are based on oral dosing. Topical I doubt would work and we wouldn’t know the dose required to obtain benefits.

    I think in this case we shouldn't focus on caloric restriction or intermittent fasting to discuss the benefits in disease prevention and life extension. It is more relevant to talk about prolonged fasting, which allows entering a true state of autophagy, with fasts of a minimum of 48 hours or more.
    It is very healthy to undertake these extended fasts several times a year. Prolonged fasting has been extensively studied and has been shown to offer numerous health benefits. This way, we avoid constantly being in a caloric deficit to prevent damaging the metabolism.

    Bryan Johnson has said in one of his videos that he has successfully managed to increase serum NAD levels by supplementing with NMN. Would be great if you could get him in your show!

      yes - i think there is agreement tat the NAD levels increase - but according to this podcast, there is no scientific evidence that this increase in NAD is clinically meaningful for better health or longevity.

    Re NAD infusions - many people with LongCovid find that these infusions are the only thing that bring them relief from symptoms. Maybe a podcast on the interventions that are showing promise in LongCovid or other infection associated chronic illnesses? With which there are, probably 20-30M Americans suffering?

    I whole heartedly agree with Dr. Huberman in regards to early morning workouts. I'm 66 y.o. and I have markedly better energy levels all day if my cardio or weight lifting is completed by 7 am. Of course, that is also before breakfast

    Great talk, although Peter could learn how to listen and not interrupt! That was painful! :-) What I got from this podcast is don’t waste your time and money on those supplements. I took NMN sublingually once (1 gram), and I was violently ill all night after it. Since then, I just can’t make myself take it. I’d say our bodies have the capacity to renew and heal on their own, provided we eat well, exercise, and most importantly, get uninterrupted sleep! Protect our liver at all costs, too! I find that more often than not, it’s what I DON’T ingest that makes a huge difference. Sugar is the worst culprit of premature aging and nearly all illnesses! Talk about a huge source of inflammation!
    To answer Peter’s question as to why we see more cancers as we age and why this is non-linear: Simple. We overwhelm our immune system with inflammatory foods, medications, an abundance of stress, and lack of sleep. The older we get, the more baggage we carry and the less our immune system is able to handle cancer cells. Why is it non-linear? Different lifestyles and some people harm themselves much sooner! I have noticed that simply sleeping by myself for the past 4-5 months has changed my health for the better tremendously! I don’t think we pay enough attention to how important sleep is!
    So, my takeaways from this:
    1. Quality Sleep Alone
    2. Quality Food
    3. Remove alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and simple carbs (as a result, I sleep WAY better! I wake up at 4 AM like Jocko, ready to go when I do that!)
    4. Sun exposure and exercise
    5. Managing my mental health and habits
    Thanks again, Andrew! I am going to throw away my kilo of NMN from David Sinclair now! Lol. Don’t need it, and it makes me sick. Why in the world would I take it? ;-)

    1:57:00 I'm a Canadian nuclear engineer. 50 mSv is the absolute max a worker is allowed to be exposed to here. We would be in huge trouble if our dose rates were that high. Typical workers are a fraction of our 20 mSv standard. Also there is no data demonstrating these low doses are harmful. Furthermore, there is a legitimate theory that small dose rates have positive effects. This is only a theory, so limits are set very low to be safe due to nuclear being (arguably) the most heavily scrutinized industry.

    Actually, Dr. Matt Kaeberlein claimed that caloric restriction doesn't increase lifespan in all lab animals. He said that caloric restricyion actually shortens lifespan in some lab animals, depending upon the individual genetics of the animal. And he said that he suspects that the same thing would probably occur in humans.

    I have had NAD infusion with Dr Dale Guyer in Indianapolis, I felt the best I had felt in years but it is expensive. I am a physician myself and I think you should have a peptide conversation with him. I did not feel bad with the infusion. He is one of the leaders in Integrative medicine.

    1:00:56 the body uses the duality of many molecules similarly such as iron which exists in both its ferrous and ferric forms depending on the electrons attached. You would not treat a low ferric iron level by supplementing iron unless the patient is in an iron deficient state. When sufficient total iron is present, correcting the underlying pathology is the key, rather than over-supplementation which leads to other problems. Just as low ATP cannot be corrected by supplementing adenosine and phosphate when it is the phosphorylation processes that ultimately determines its level

    At 1:11:11 it is wrong to transpose animal dosage directly to humans; you have to take into account metabolic rate and surface area. For rats 500mg/kg means 6.2/37 x 500mg/kg = 83.78mg/kg

    I see so many guys being given high dose B6 to lower prolactin levels. It doesn't take much to become B6 toxic and their typical doses are beyond that. Its such dangerous advice but yet its still regularly used for elevated prolactin. Small fiber polyneuropathy is no joke and the dosing I did was considered "low" by most standards but it was more than enough to cause nerve damage.

    I don’t know how to say this respectfully, so I’m just going to say it. Dr. Attia has always seemed angry to me. Not just in this podcast, and even going back to his first publicly viewable lectures about his (then) obsession, which was the keto diet (now abandoned as a panacea). I’ve read his book and Dr. David Sinclair’s book. My gut says that Dr. Attia thinks he is somehow in competition or threatened by Dr. David Sinclair, particularly on the rapamycin counterpoints. A lot of the caveats Peter describes in this podcast are covered in detail in Dr. Sinclair’s book, and he provides many references to studies while noting where there might be exceptions or flaws in the data. I did not find the same in Dr. Attia’s book, although it stands alone just for the recommendations for strength training and VO2 max, and the mental health advice. I think the mental health advice in his book (while very valuable) is autobiographical and indicative of bias when it comes to recommendations. When someone comes off as unable to regulate their prefrontal cortex in a podcast as if they are being personally attacked, caveat emptor.
