Holy moly!! I met the man. I worked at the animal shelter his dog was brought into between another incident and the murder. He was INSANE. I had to deal with him for hours..I believe he did this crime 3 days after he got his dog back. We then got his dog back AGAIN and were able to rehome her. I can’t remember his dogs name, it started with a P, and she never left his side..the fact the dog made it into the video is wild.
The guy was incredibly mentally unstable. Took 2 seconds for anyone to determine that. His last incident in the civilian world was violent. He was released and went back on the AT and did that.. shook us up!
The cops here offered to drive him and his dog to somewhere other than the AT, somewhere for help..and he refused the ride because he refused to ride without his knives. Not making any of this up. I only learned in this video his trail name was Sovereign.
Thank you for caring for his dog. He probably showed his horrific side to said dog. I can't imagine how disturbing all of this would have been. I'm sure you have seen other disturbing humans via their pets, but that doesn't make this any less distressing.
Except the hikers who wouldn’t go to court to testify. That was a selfish and immature decision. Being threatened with a shovel and being chased out of a public area (shelter) is not a joke. He had crazy in his eyes and I mean literally an insane evil look as you can see from his pictures nothing about him says this experience will pass and all will be ok. Who cares about a scheduled hike when it comes to handling crime and legal issues and safety issues? It’s not like they were on the clock at work or had to rush home for an emergency. I wonder if those hikers felt some guilt they could have had him put away and kept people safe and alive and his dog would be safe away from him as well.
@@angelakyle4838 The real frustrating thing is that with the state of the modern legal system and the lack of mental health facilities, he most likely would have received a short sentence, maybe a few months, and then been released and ended up perpetrating this terrible crime anyway.

People are the worst in the animal kingdom. Animals have a reason to attack - protect their offspring, defend from predators and provide food f ok r themselves and their family. now, the 2 legged variety of animal are the most dangerous. MAN. There are those who kill for the “sport”, not for food, not to protect their young but just to kill. Man by far is the worst being. Somebody once said the more people I meet, the more I like my dog. It’s true. People can be vile.
@@thisoldnurse1521 mistreated dogs and wild animals can also be very dangerous and attack children and other animals without reason due to the trauma they suffered and domestic cats are known to play with their prey for hours. Having said that, we as a society have the capacity to take care of mental illness and stop abuse, but it appears to be low in the priority of most governments in the world. That makes us pretty bad.
Maybe one day someone will explain to me how ones military deployment has actually served the American people, and not just fed the warmongers. No one has attacked America. A true American hero. Our country needs to stop putting sports stars and rappers on a pedestal and start giving the real heroes the recognition they deserve. People are so desensitized by social media that most have lost empathy for others. Nowadays if someone is in distress people would rather stand there and get it on video than help. It will lead to our demise. When Kennedy was shot it was talked about for 50 years. A president gets shot now and it's forgotten about within a few days. It's pretty sad.

My mom and myself got on the AT with the intention of a thru hike in ‘19, and we actually came across this guy a few times. Just had bad vibes and mom was already very conscious of safety because it was our first big hike and we’re both women (and I was a minor at the time) so we mostly kept to ourselves and gave him a really wide berth. We ended up getting off the trail after Blood Mountain as my mom had gotten sick after eating trail angel food, and we admitted to ourselves that we both had a really bad feeling about it. It was a hard decision but now we’re incredibly grateful we got off the trail and away from him.

Judging by the scar across her face and eye she went through the worst nightmare imaginable! I know this isnt a popular opinion but, you should always be armed...you're your own first responder!!
I know that there are more crazies in the city than in the parks, but encountering a nut like this out in the woods with no access to police, EMTs, escape routes, or even places to take cover is still more frightening than in my town.
The portion of the trail between the town where Mr. Sanchez has resumed his walk, and the place where he completed his passage among the living should be named after him.
During the most recent hurricane caused storm, my jeep was pushed, by mud, over a 6' cliff landing upside down in a creek on a VERY remote national forest road. I crawled out of the passenger window, scaled the 6' embankment and walked 3 painful miles in pouring rain before I found UNWILLING assistance. Ultimately, I was transported to a neurologist who treated me for brain bleeding. All's well and outdoor life continues. I'm a combat military vet and tougher at 64 than most ⅓ my age. This is to say... I understand the struggle of that female hiker's 6 mile hike and recovery.
Sir, thank you so much for your service. I’m truly sorry for the horrible trauma you endured during the hurricane, and to not even have met up with kind people who wanted to help. You are indeed a person of great strength and courage.
Oh my gosh, Kyle. THANK YOU for supporting the survivors of Helene! Hot Springs, NC, sits right on the trail and was decimated by the storm. Your support - and that of your listeners - means a lot.
I'm watching this from my bed, unfortunately. Both of my knees are needing to be replaced. While I'm waiting, my beautiful Great Pyrenees dog is right by my side. She's a great protector, and I'm so fortunate to have her..
This story from beginning to end exemplifies just how tragic, crazy, messy, weird, frightening and harrowing this life can be. Just Ronald Sanchez' role is so distressing to think he serves this country honorably just to be killed by a POS while on a healing journey. It is just unbelievable...RIP.
Blessings on the female hiker and kudos to her for reaching the terminus of the trail; she is such a survivor! My deepest sympathies go to the loved ones of the murder victim. It's just horrid that he did everything right but it cost him his life.
Thank a veteran for being able to speak what you want. Isn't America great? Other countries you couldn't say that but here it's protected by the first amendment and the blood our soldiers spilled to protect it

Thank you for protecting the identity of the female hiker who was stabbed. It's clearly her story to tell, or not, as she sees fit. I understand why the identity of the murder victim is more relevant to the story.
Kyle I really respect you and your channel, because I feel like you are one of the very few youtubers who handle true crime and tragic stories ethically, by always giving some proceeds to either rescue associations or some kind of programs to give back, rather than profiting off other people's pain. I really wish more youtubers and true crime channels did this.
Thank you Ronald Sanchez Jr. (Stronghold) for your service in defending your country, and for paying the ultimate sacrafice to defend your fellow hikers. And to the lady hiker who survived such a horrific event, and still pressed on to do what you love; you can be my wingman anytime! 🎉
I had an encounter with this guy on the trail 2 weeks before he committed these atrocities. He was unhinged and spoke violently. I remember him taking his dog to someone elses dog food bowl and telling his dog "yeah, eat that s*** b**** or ill f****** k*ll you." He had also taken a locals husky and tried to keep it as his own, but me and 2 others confronted him about it after learning of the situation, and got the dog back without violence. We eventually told him to kick rocks or we would call the cops. Stay safe, carry a gun, and Happy trails. Edit: proof on channel. Great video. -Street Jesus
The way we ignore abused children and the adults they become is far worse that what we do to or neglect with military - some people have suffered both child abuse (there are specific types and conditions that lead to the victims becoming abusers or not) and become military veterans. And don’t assume that someone who is a veteran did anything other than sit at a desk or some such thing…focus should be on those wounded who saw violence and were forced to participate in it.

Sounds like he was doing ok. Got a therapist and everything. Could afford to travel across numerous states to go hiking. He was just unlucky to cross paths with a violent paranoid individual.
Unfortunately, I've battled depression and anxiety all my life. I surround myself with positive people and couldn't imagine wanting to hurt an innocent person. I went to rehab years ago to kick Xanax and there was a dude there that, similar to this man in the story, believed the government was telling him about future events and would hurt him if he didn't do what they said. I remember watching him try and clean the entire floor with a brush because they would hurt his wife if he didn't. I was stunned and never saw this behavior. When his meds kicked in, he was so nice and apologized for making anyone uncomfortable etc. Wild
Yeah, it's a shame he wasn't taken in for treatment when police picked him up after the reports of his threats. He was clearly having a psychotic episode, something any mental health professional would have picked up on. Police just aren't equipped to deal with situations like this, they would be so much more effective working in tandem with a well-resourced mental health team, instead of having to go through the whole criminal justice procedure. Imagine if the people could just file reports on his behaviour and they used that to get him mental health treatment instead of having to get a conviction, the whole thing could have been averted. It's almost as sad for him as it is for his victims.
@@MadCatLady28 So true! LEO's are not trained/taught enough about how to handle those suspected of mental health issues! To many who need medical intervention wind up in prison instead of in hospitals getting the treatment they need.
@@MadCatLady28a wasted life indeed. He could have decided to leave the AT after the tremendous effort Odie went through to stop him from menacing hikers. Instead Jordan seemed determined to be led by his demons to do this abominable act. Some people are pure evil sadly.
@@ancient_hedges8359 I suspect his subsequent remorse is genuine. When you've experienced someone having a psychotic break, you understand why it is they can't be held culpable for their actions and instead are sentenced to custodial mental health treatment as opposed to a punitive action like prison. Decision-making in that state doesn't really exist, which is why it would have been best for someone in their right mind to intervene early with treatment. Odie did a great thing, but their intervention couldn't address the real problem - his psychosis - and this is why the state needs to have expertise and resources to be able to intervene appropriately in these cases. One thing I do think is amazing... Odie must have been really adept at managing him to get him on the bus in the first place, that's a special skill in and of itself. But I'm not so quick to judge him as "evil". Scary? Yes. Dangerous? Definitely. But I couldn't say evil unless he's also prone to offend while his mental health is being adequately managed. I didn't see any evidence during this story that it's ever been adequately managed.

I have been hiking my entire life. Live in the Carolinas but I have hiked all over the U.S. Never once have I ever hiked without a firearm. Just like I don’t hike without water, GPS, food, extra clothing etc. Be prepared for anything.
This happened in my county. I remember waking up the next morning and it was on the local news and in the paper for weeks. It was scary to hear about. Every spring and summer you see the hikers walking through Marion, Va to get to the next part of the trail. You see them at the post office picking up packages and in Walmart getting supplies. It’s always cool seeing how many are hiking the trail each year.❤️
I saw this guy in Damascus. I vaguely remember seeing something about it on the news. But I don’t remember hen it was, but I don’t think it was recent. I don’t know why ANYONE would ever hike the AT unarmed! They have had to close several sections in Washington county due to aggressive bears. I’ve met some doozies during trail days there in Damascus. Did you get any damage from Helene? I have been working comms and there are still a LOT of people missing in NC.
Ronal Sanchez Jr, what an amazing man who served our country and protected so many people on that awful night. The young lady is so brave to face her pain by going back on the trails. My heart breaks for the people who live in the Appalaachian Mountains and the devastation they have endured.
Bill Bryson wrote ‘a walk in the woods’ in 2010 about his walk along the AT. In it he talks about a number of murders and missing persons, and a scary encounter he and katz had.
Sometimes you CAN judge a book by it's cover. If you see black eyes, that's enough reason to run as fast as you can. The eyes truly are the windows of the soul.
@sweettina2, you are right the eyes are the window to the soul, and wanted to add also the persons' energy, ones instinct doesn’t lie but we resist many times and ignore the danger
I remember this well. That summer I was working at a post office close to the AT in SWVA. Hikers were telling me every day about this guy. I asked each time if they wanted to contact the police. No one would because they didn’t want to lose time on the trail. So sad
This is a very tragic story. It's another tragedy as we don't really know how to provide care when it pertains to mental health. I don't know whether it's your story telling but each time the camera got closer to your face, your eyes got me glued to the story. You're a genuine guy and appreciate how you share despite of these tragedies, fear isn't a way to approach life. Also, thank you for encouraging support to those affected by hurricane Helene. Will be getting a Sawyer!
This is why there used to be state mental health institutions that kept people with severe mental illness for their lifetime. The people who rallied for closure of these institutions were under the false assumption they would function in society appropriately as long as on meds, because they functioned better in the institutions while on meds. The sad truth is they stop taking meds and getting appropriate care outside of institution setting because of the fact the mental illness itself leads them to convince themselves they no longer require meds or treatment so they stop it. Then they begin to decline. They leave family and caregivers behind, because they get angry at them for trying to “ force”meds or treatment on them. The answer is to once again open lifetime commitment institutions with the realization that severe mental illness is not cured by meds ( just gives the illusion of such). They truly require lifetime supervised care and separation from the public to keep them safe and the public safe. My opinion after working for 20 years in the mental health system.
@@user-wl8wl8lp9r I disagree. Institutionalization needed to be stopped as folks were being warehoused just because they were mentally "challenging". There is no one way to provide support. A wrap around service looks at the needs and resources of the individual. Is it a perfect system? No. But neither is forcing to warehouse individuals.
Having so much in common with both the perpetrator, (parents on drugs & alcoholics, abused) ,and the victim, ( I was combat engineer, no war), I just don't understand why some things affect people so much so and others it doesn't? I'll probably never understand it but I'm so grateful for it. My heart goes out to everyone who was involved.
The ONLY gun law that President Obama ever passed expanded your right to carry into the national parks where it had been previously highly illegal to carry a firearm in a national park. As a person with a severe mental illness, I take my meds, without fail, *Every Single Day* I think if someone _refuses_ to take their meds, they need to be hospitalized. Otherwise, it's often other people that suffer the consequences. I am well aware of other opinions, but this is mine. I don't even hike and really never plan to, but I _love_ this channel!
I've got severe mental illness as well, and while I don't fully agree with this on a broad spectrum, I do believe that if certain criteria are met and the person is refusing medication/treatment, they should be hospitalised. Medication has saved my life, and I can't go on without it, but there are times when I struggle to believe in it because it is working (if that makes sense). Thankfully, I have people in my life who make sure I'm taking it like I should and don't stop. I hope you're doing as well as you can be ❤
I realize that guy is mentally ill but he took a life and is unlikely to be cured of his illness. He needs to remain in custody. Rest in peace Mr Sanchez and I hope the woman was able to complete her journey.
I tell you Stronghold had the face of a kind, gentle soul who wore his heart on his sleeve as he had accomplished so much since his return home. Stronghold will be remembered and missed as he is a hero to everyone that comes across the AT!! As for the female companion, she is a BAD ASS and should be incredibly proud of herself and may she hit the AT again!!! Thank you for highlighting these great organizations too as I would like to give back.
I have suffered a lifetime of mental health issues, and I have never hurt anyone. Not deliberately. I was in a car accident that was my fault, but the other driver was not seriously hurt. I despise when people usen mental health issues as an excuse for bad behavior.
Yeah I can empathize with mental disorders. People do recover and can be helped. I myself have struggled with this but have never ever felt remotely close to hurting anyone. Obviously there are different types of mental disorders and In general I don’t always agree with the American incarceration policies… However when it comes to an insane person that murders people, physically hurts others, and has so many red flags I don’t think that is fair to the people killed to give them leniency. There’s obviously times for discretion, but this guy seems chronically insane and acted on premeditation to kill an innocent person. Sure maybe they can be rehabilitated and monitored to see if they recover but how do you actually determine this? It sucks they were dealt a bad hand in life but I don’t think the risk of giving them another chance to hurt more people is worth it.
The guy was obviously well gone mentally. There is a point where you can't just rely on morals and complain about people being bad but you need to lock them up in psychiatric hospital. I don't say that in a malicious way but some people are public danger.
I so admire both the female hiker and Stronghold. Both faced their demons and conquered them. Stronghold was a real American hero to his last breath. Must respect to them both. RIP Stronghold. Thanks Kyle. You did a great job telling this story. 💜

A lot of wealthy people hike that trail. Hikers could fund volunteer outposts or something along those lines. If people had something sketchy happen they would know they're 4 miles from a shelter or whatever and could just go there to be in a group
Hey Kyle I am from Tennessee and from Kingsport which is 30 minutes from Johnson City. I used to day walk in the trails when I was a few years younger. It's true that the Appalachian Mountains are dangerous and easy to get lost. A lot of people underestimate the Appalachian trails and mountains and either get lost, get separated easy from their friends, get hurt and k*lled.I think it's great that there are people who help hikers with food and water.
I totally understand those first hikers not wanting to press charges, and knowing what happened later is punishment enough. And what OD did was so brave. But the fact that the female victim hiked 6 (!) miles with those injuries, is just totally amazing! What a strong woman! And in the darkness! It must have felt like forever. 😮 I'm so happy she got back on the trail after such a horrifying experience. My prayers go to her and the other victims family and loved ones. How utterly terrifying....
I thought I knew this story pretty well, but you did a great job of telling it and I learned a lot more about this awful tragedy. I feel so bad for Sanchez. He's trying to heal his wounded brain and winds up getting murdered while doing it. Such a sad and maddening story. And my best wishes to the injured female hiker. Thank you, Kyle for talking about the devastation throughout the Southeast from Hurricane Helene. I knew you would come through because I know you love the Appalachian trail and you've mentioned possibly moving around Asheville. I was born and raised in Asheville and this is just unprecedented and an incredible challenge for everyone. Help has come from all over the country and that is so uplifting. What is really heartwarming is the two other hikers that abandoned their hiking partners and could have helped and prevented the other two from being stabbed.
Against the perpetrator weapon they were under too much risk. But who wants or expects a assault & battery when packing for a positive recreation experience? Guess lighter backpacks even can be dropped if crazy person attacks, to gain legs speed - down or up !
@robertknowles2699 Many people have been killed in situations that they did not want or expect. That is why you pray for the best and prepare for the worst. But we live in a society with a popular worldview that if you think positive thoughts it will influence the outcome when faced with opposition. Whereas if you bring a gun to a knife fight you have a higher chance of living to tell about it and possibly protecting the ones that only depend on thinking positively and not staying prepared for real life threats. A simple firearm on the waistband or in your backpack can be a lifesaving tool. But then again society is being brainwashed to believe a gun is the "cause" for violence. Keep those positive thoughts coming and good luck with it.
What a wild story, I've never heard of either of these beautiful souls who endeared what is literally a nightmare situation when you're out there doing anything trying to heal yourself. This one hit me differently. Strength is a powerful character trait, measured in so many different ways. One had outward, physical strength (Ronald Sanchez, Jr) in his courageous decision to defend himself and the female hiker, as well as displaying incredible resolve to keep rebuilding his incredible inner strength by returning to his hiking / healing journey, while the female hiker showed amazing resilience to hike so far being critically injured as well as the rare and admirable quality of not allowing this terrifying and life threatening experience change her perception of where it happened, displaying her powerful inner strength. Her logic and her resolve to move past and finish what she had started, refusing to allow anyone to take something she found such peace and beauty and joy in, from her…while spreading the message to not be afraid to hike the trails, her she did not want this anomaly to cause a false stigma that the trails are dangerous, making people afraid to go hiking. To me, this shows an outlook on life that is compassionate and caring not just herself, but for others as well. This, too, is the rare quality Mr. Sanchez displayed when he chose to stay and protect her with his life. I hope I can be as courageous and honorable as they both are…I bow my head in respect to both such strong fighters, never letting their fears prevent them from living their best lives. My heart breaks for Mr. Sanchez and his family, I hope they can gain a measure of peace knowing that he was a man of great honor, and while his death was senseless and tragic and never should have happened, it is my belief that it was not in vain. In 2003 I moved to Fontana NC to work at the resort. I became a hiking guide and was training to do the AT. After 2 years of seeing the hikers on the trail I decided never to hike it. It was a disaster. I was a refuge for homeless ppl living off the "trail angles" these ppl were nasty and the trail angles were feeding these ppl. Many insane ppl roaming back and forth on the trail. Too crowded, Drugs, violence, trash everywhere, TVA running sting OPs, No thanks!
It is probably something they had been planning and saving for- both vacation time and money. All the logistics that go into it, can’t say I blame them- but it would have saved lives- hindsight is 20/20, I am sure if they had known, they would have done it if they could.
Not sure if this is how you meant your comment, but it’s not like her “experience” was ruined by a thunderstorm. Do you think she wasn’t robbed of her life? Every day she needs to deal with the trauma of what happened, mentally & physically. She has to deal with the memories of what she witnessed when Stronghold was being murdered. Sounds, smells & random memories popping up when you least expect it taking you right back to that moment. Imagine seeing someone that vaguely resembles the person who tried to kill you? You want to add a but to this, Stronghold’s struggle ended that day but hers was just starting. Both are horrible circumstances. I feel for both. Her completing the trail is a testament to overcoming the challenges. It wasn’t to downplay the loss of a life.
It blows my mind that this guy could be back in free society at some point. Mentally ill or not, he’s proven himself to be an extremely dangerous and deranged individual.
@@kimfleury Unfortunately it seems decisions on sentencing and release these days tend to often be based on politics rather than common sense. It’s a sad state of affairs. My heart goes out to the victims and families.
This story is a good reminder that YOU are your own first responder and YOU are responsible for your safety. It isn’t smart to venture into the woods without an effective means to protect yourself from anything you are likely to encounter.
Kyle Hates Hiking, you need to do a piece of William Morva of Blacksburg. I actually hung out with him in the Coffee shops in town and played chess with him. He holed up on a trail after killing two policemen and hid for days. He knew his outdoors stuff. It would make good content and different from what you normally do but still relavent. Check it out.
Dude, you're my favorite UA-camr. You're so compassionate. The way you admire the female hiker... because hell yeah, what a bad ass. All the way to the donating to the folks affected by the hurricane. You're a good person, Kyle, and I enjoy being a part of your community. You inspire me to be better.
I have through hiked the AT 3x. There are a lot of amazing people and places but still some equally sketchy people and places along the trail (though I loved it enough to do it 2 more times). Because it crosses so many states and is varied between local and federal jurisdictions, I don't carry on the trail as I do in my backcountry hikes. This is just because it is a huge logistical consideration. While I don't have a firearm, I am far from unarmed and am very confident in my ability to protect myself and my friends if necessary, and against almost any attack. I'm also 6'5 and well over 200 lbs, so I'm also just not the target most people would try to take on. My last through hike was 2019. I didn't see or know anyone involved, but it was all people talked about for the later part of my journey. I was about 15-20 days ahead of this guy. I don't recall exactly where I was when I heard about the killing, but know I was somewhere north of Gettysburg in PA when this happened. If you're going on any long hike, you need to be prepared for all kinds of weather and all kinds of people and situations. It's rarely the 4 legged threats that are a threat on the trail, it's more likely to be the guy hiking nearby who gives you that uneasy feeling when you bump into each other.

The fact that soo many people reported this man and nothing was done to prevent this is so disheartening.
@@BeBeBraveSpiritagreed - an obviously dangerous man could have been stopped - refusing to testify is literally outrageous 😐.
That was my first question. He should have been taken off and at least put into watch in a secured place not allowed to wander around.
@@angelakyle4838 The real frustrating thing is that with the state of the modern legal system and the lack of mental health facilities, he most likely would have received a short sentence, maybe a few months, and then been released and ended up perpetrating this terrible crime anyway.

A true American hero. Our country needs to stop putting sports stars and rappers on a pedestal and start giving the real heroes the recognition they deserve. People are so desensitized by social media that most have lost empathy for others. Nowadays if someone is in distress people would rather stand there and get it on video than help. For a country with a 100% volunteer military, the way we treat veterans is, frankly, criminal.

You're a genuine guy and appreciate how you share despite of these tragedies, fear isn't a way to approach life. Also, thank you for encouraging support to those affected by hurricane Helene.

Kyle, this one got me...I am in tears for Sanchez. To go through so much for his country and for this to be his fate. Terrible. My heart aches for the young woman who survived the stabbing but was scarred mentally as Sanchez was, both suffering ptsd with their own experiences. Soldiers, thank you for your service and wish you healing. My father was a Vietnam veteran both Marine and Navy branches, who lived a long life and died at 87 years of age. Miss you dad!

I hope you're doing as well as you can be ❤
Keep safe.
You sound like a poacher sticking up for the gamekeeper. Classic snitch material
AVPD is different than other disorsers imo.
Mr. Sanchez, you carried your oath to the end "defend your coutry from foreign or domestic threat". Thank you sir, for giving your life in defense of another. To the unbelievable resilience of a young woman who refused to let this monster take her life, Congratulations sweetheart ❤️ 💖 you are a official BADASS!! The park ranger said it perfectly in the comments " the most dangerous thing on the trail walks on 2 legs".
This is why the Appalachian Trail and all American trails need dedicated rangers that hike and patrol the trails dedicated to protecting all Americans on the trail
@@Hustler1856 great idea! But will it ever happen ?
For 500 miles? That’s how far in they were. Outposts? Cameras?
That's a lot of area to cover. I think getting a concealed carry permit is probably a more realistic option.
3 million people hike the trail safely every year. This is why people should watch less true crime.
A lot of wealthy people hike that trail. Hikers could fund volunteer outposts or something along those lines. If people had something sketchy happen they would know they're 4 miles from a shelter or whatever and could just go there to be in a group
That dog was amazing! RIP Stronghold, you gave your life to save others- a truly selfless act.
Hi neighbor! I’m more worried about Stone drive (E or W) than anything in the woods. But Bears are getting bad around here!
@@sirtango1 OH I understand that place.can be scary. It's nice to speak to you
I was born in Kingsport.
Congratulations on 500k man! What a journey. I will donate as soon as I can afford to 🙏
I totally understand those first hikers not wanting to press charges, and knowing what happened later is punishment enough.
OMG! Thank you so much for the Helene call out. We need the support! I hope the hiker was able to complete her AT journey.
If you haven't already, I hope you finish the AT and are able to gain some closure from it.
In Sanchez photo I could see peace in his eyes ✨
Imagine pushing yourself out of the house with debilitating PTSD, to the woods for peace and healing and while you’re making friends, interacting & enjoying life again, this literal POS in NC gets dumped into your campsite in Virginia unbeknownst to you and injures your friend, chases the rest of your group into the night and takes your very life! How cruel! RIP Ronald.
He needs to NEVER EVER be released. If released he will go off his meds & be a danger to society.
What an absolute failure of justice
It makes me angry that people wouldn't testify. They could have prevented MURDER. Sorry if it's an inconvenience.
They spend thousands of dollars to have him released a week later?
That’s why always carry a gun when heading into the wilderness NO MATTER WHAT
On short trips where legal i do too. On a thru hike not a chance. I've slept in my hammock out west with a pistol on my chest on a multi state hike travelling with a firearm in the east is gonna cause problems for you. It's conditioning.
Absolutely
No one on the Appalachian trail carries a gun?
... met him in Va. , gave his dog some food , oddly enough he seemed very wary even scared of me - I'm over 70 - we talked for all of ten minutes and he quickly ran off ...
Your kindness probably caused him confusion & unexpected emotions. Lucky you! 👍 😊
I wish the the survivor would have mentioned stronghold. The man who lost his life trying to protect her.
But she was so amazing and resilient and badass and etc that she ran away and survived! Just kidding, I am very glad she was lucky enough to have not been injured bad enough that it was fatal. It was a horrible ordeal and it’s not her fault that drama queens like the narrator and social media trends turn people annoying just by their buzzword filled glowing praise for surviving an ordeal.

Sánchez survived his trauma from war and was taken down by a mentally unstable man. So sad I hope his family finds comfort in his attempt to save the female hiker.
I want to hike the AT and I will probably still do it but this is freaking me out so I'll probably hike with a friend instead of alone and take caution.
You're such a gifted storyteller and have so much empathy and kindness. My heart is broken for this brave veteran who I'm sure allowed others more time to get away by attempting to fight this crazed individual.
Despite his mental state when he committed these heinous acts, this man should never be let out, free to offend again!
Wow , Odie is a real angel, not just a trail angel. How brave of him to get into a car alone with him and risk his life to try to save others.
Hiking anywhere away from people without a gun seems wild to me. Its obviously worth the little bit of extra weight
100% flipping fucking percent. You can get a concealed carry which is sign

Thank you for covering their stories and for also respecting the privacy of the female hiker by not saying her name. I wouldn't want my name to be associated with that girl who got stabbed on the AT. Your friend Odie sounds amazing. My heart goes out to Ronald Sanchez's family, he went through hell and came back to dealing with his trauma in such a beautiful way... you're a great story teller... this one was rough but thank you for telling it
Carry protection, always and everywhere.
WOW! This was terrifying but also showed how much we can be resilient. May the dear heroic Vet rest peacefully; his actions were incredible.
I will never forget the life of me understand why everyone hiking doesn’t carry a firearm for protection. I would never consider even day hiking without carrying a gun.
I am also a female veteran 83-92. As a soldier with PTSD; camping; hiking; and riding my 2006 Honda Shadow 750 gives me so much joy - it's almost a spiritual thing 4 me. So I get what was gng on in that soldier's head. Stronghold is quite the trail name...it's tough coming back and pretending everything is just groovy. Rip Sgt. Vazquez; I am playing taps as I pray 4 u. God bless all of you that came across a monster and lived. Keep on trucking and like 9/11 never ever stop living because then the bad guys win. Hooyah!
I feel like you didn’t emphasize enough Sanchez Jr’s role in the female escaping death. He gave his life so she might survive..,
Right??
Just like to say thanks Kyle. I live here in east Tn and grew up in Roan mountain. I know your not supposed to carry on the AT but this is way we do. My heart goes out to the familys and hikers. Thanks again for the support and a grate video.
These are both two amazing people we should all aspire to be like. I commend you both, the soldier and the survivor. Safe travels ahead… RIP, Mr. Sanchez, and as Truth 4 Reality says, “thank you for being a light for others.”
My first thought was they didn’t want to testify because it would ruin their hike. 😕
It is probably something they had been planning and saving for- both vacation time and money. All the logistics that go into it, can’t say I blame them- but it would have saved lives- hindsight is 20/20, I am sure if they had known, they would have done it if they could.
Sanchez was helping so many other vets with outdoors. He was learning plants. Such a loss.
She was robbed of her experience, and I get that. But A guy was robbed of his life. I feel bad for STRONGHOLD
This gave me chills. Her will to live and toughness probably saved several lives. She’s a hero and I hope she got to hike the whole trail.
It blows my mind that this guy could be back in free society at some point. Mentally ill or not, he’s proven himself to be an extremely dangerous and deranged individual.
That's very unlikely, because of the history of threats carried out.
@@kimfleury Unfortunately it seems decisions on sentencing and release these days tend to often be based on politics rather than common sense. It’s a sad state of affairs. My heart goes out to the victims and families.
Prison is the biggest mental health provider in the country.
There's usually no way to deal with people like this until they do something serious.
That’s insanity and no pun intended! I find it horrendous that that man could still be set free???
