Yes I know I cut out some sections. If I hadn't I wouldn't have released it, so you're welcome.
This video is brought to you by admitting some things I say suck but that's not worth throwing everything out.
I can't believe you've never seen this show!
*Stephen Christopher Anthony* played the lead when I saw the North American tour in Seattle. He made one of the most challenging roles ever actually look easy and natural. I've NEVER seen/heard anything like it (and musicals are my life).
If you have a chance to see/hear Stephen Christopher Anthony in anything, don't hesitate!
@@tarajh I saw him play Evan in L.A. and he was so good, I cried nonstop through the whole show.
@@MrsOdie2 - Right?! SO. GOOD.
I knew nothing about the show going in, other than being warned to bring a hanky. Best advice ever.
Hey Sam. Ive been watching your reactions from almost very beginning and I enjoy them very much. I would like to ask you to do reaction/analyse of Tori Amos - Winter live from Montreux 91/92. Im really interested what you think about it. Many thanks!
Hi Sam. Can you please react to a-ha - Take On Me (Live From MTV Unplugged) ua-cam.com/video/-xKM3mGt2pE/v-deo.html
Ben Platt as Evan Hansen is a *masterclass* in performance, will forever be my point of reference when it comes to quality and artistry
Choly i totally agree with u there. i saw DEH live and the music is so incredible i just wish the story wasn’t so bad lol. the entire second act is just a copout :-(( (and i don’t mean musically; the music is still super strong but the story just kinda falls apart. and evan doesn’t face ANY consequences for his shitty actions)
@@t0ad_ In the book, Evan is very aware that he didn't face the consequences that he should have. He himself admits that he deserved the worst. And he said it throughout the story.
I personally don't agree with you but I just thought I could point that out.
Jacksepticdyinginside admitting that you shouldn’t have done something doesn’t mean instant forgiveness u know? like he’s instantly forgiven
@@t0ad_ he wasn't instantly forgiven by Zoe or her family. There's an awkward tension between them at the end of the book. The only person who's really back in his corner is his mom even though she's astonished by the choices he made.
@Choly You mean FOR FOREVER don't you?
I've been dying to see you react to Ben Platt! When you said how he wasn't worrrying about technique and was letting the character lead, I think that's why so many people connect so deeply to his singing -- he always leads with emotion and his technique feels effortless, so the listener can just focus on that emotion and be taken on a glorious ride. I love hearing your analysis on these reaction videos because, as a complete newb, your commentary always sparks a deeper understanding and appreciation of the music for me.
Sam: "it's AUTHENTIC"
Me: "does this qualify as irony?"
OMG I CHOKED ON MY COFFEE
what you said about starting out very softly-I don’t know how familiar you are with Dear Evan Hansen, but one big thing about his character is his social anxiety. he stutters and mumbles when he speaks, and it’s only when he’s well into a song that that aspect of his speech falls away and we hear him singing loud and clear. the easy spoken singing at the beginning is a character thing :)
You're right; I think it's part of the character as well as a choice he made to adapt from stage to being videoed.
I love how his speech is more clear when he sings because it’s true in real life too. I have a stutter, but when I sing, the stutter just goes away
I feel like Evan is talking to himself because he’s imagining this friendship this friendship that he’s been longing
Frances Del Rosario Yup the friendship that doesn’t exist. A good liar that lies to himself
If you've seen the show, he's starting out talking to Connor's parents, mainly Connor's mother. He's seated upstage behind the dinner table, but as his story goes on and he gets caught up in his own wish fulfillment, he comes out from behind the table and moves downstage. There's also a lighting change as he comes out from behind the table that pulls the focus from the group of Evan and the Murphys to just Evan that reinforces the move from the reality of the dinner to Evan's inner world. The staging and lighting are brilliant and reinforce everything that's happening in the song and with the character. It made what was happening super clear, and it wrecked me emotionally.
@@Tunarth It’s one of the great written scenes because of the staging and lighting. It’s pretty much like a modern Shakespeare-style setup where a character, usually the main, is all by themselves and is talking inside about something, in this musical theater case though, their monologues are singing so the set setups have to be really on-the-spot.
I gotta comment again....I think it's really brilliant that he can add the effect of sounding nervous to fit the character. He also sings while SOBBING - I MEAN REALLY?!?!?!?!
In the show he sings while crying, I tried to sing as a karaoke and the words and chords of the songs really makes my eyes water.
He literally has cried his make up off
Sam, I'd love to hear you react the Words Fail from DEH. Ben Platt is sobbing throughout and it's so emotional.
y e s It's literally so good
I just want to say before I press play that ppl clown his vibrato but I LOVE it and y’all can fight me!! 💓
I got your back in this fight. I love it!
The Irreverent Reader we ride at dawn!
Its Mags I don’t get why people hate it that much. Like seriously, when Freddie Mercury has an abnormally fast vibrato it’s called breathtaking, amazing, pure talent, etc., but when Ben Platt does it, it’s bad.
PPL BEST NOT BE CLOWNIN. his vibrato makes him stand out and I love it so much 😫🥺
I got your back gurll. Love his vibrato
I wish he would have reacted to Waving through a Window cuz the BREATH CONTROL in that piece is ridiculous. His emotion driven vibrato and stuff near the end- ugh! Incredible!
Ben Platt has such a gorgeous voice, and his performance from DEH is so emotional and raw, it always astonishes me how in character he gets during a performance. I waited for so long for you to react to him singing this song!
So, you absolutely have to react to George Salazar recording "Michael In The Bathroom". He is amazing and I'd love to see you break down his technique
Basically, everything Ben Platt does is good because he’s Ben Platt. We’ll allow it. ✅
You should react to River from The Politician! He is sooooo good on that song! I mean, he's amazing all the time! but that one is quite impressive.
Yes!!!
YESSSS!!!!!
Marissa Stout vienna is definitely my favorite song he sang
both made me cry but vienna made me full on s o b i love him and his freaking superb voice so much oml- 🥺💞💖
I would LOVE for you to react to his original songs. He’s incredible live. Also one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen was Ben as Evan in DEH. I was in a puddle of tears a majority of the show thanks to him.
This is why I appreciate you SO MUCH Sam. I've had voice teachers that would harp on all those little things you pointed out. I love that you understand the necessity for change to classical technique to get a sound that fits the emotion and character you are portraying.
I love that Sam understands and incorporates the storytelling as a part of the analysis of Ben’s vocal performance!
Sam, I think maybe a DEH bootleg is in order?
I definitely DON'T have a bootleg downloaded on my phone that I watch at least once every month.... 🙄😂
@@bethanyvrooman9698 i definitely don’t want you to give me the link of the bootleg that you definitely don’t have
Anyone who can sing while crying is a superhero in my book.
Love Ben platt, he’s the only Evan Hansen I can imagine despite there being so many since him who have been brilliant. I guess that’s sometimes what happens when someone creates a character on broadway but his voice is so emotive ❤️
This song kills me every time and he does such an amazing job conveying all the subtle emotions and hints to him character
I've never clicked so fast Sam 😂 I would love it if you reacted to Broadway stuff more often, i really want to hear your feedback on these ♥️
Yeeesss!!!
Agreed, there are so many awesome broadway vocalists and there's so much variety with the songs & singers & emotions. They make a great vid with sam's commentary 👌🏾
I’ve always wanted to know his thoughts on the Hunchback stage version cast - maybe Michael Arden singing made of stone - but I feel like that’s so obscure and niche it will literally never happen from like any UA-cam vocal coach lol
Yes!! Beetlejuice songs would be nice!
Just wanna say before watching, I love Ben Platt - The Politician season 2 coming soon to Netflix, and Ben platt Concert also coming soon to Netflix, you should watch both, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk
Whisper_Ren omg?! A concert to Netflix?! I had no idea!
@@marge973 I know, I'm literally dying, can't wait
I saw his concert opening night in Chicago, it was amazing. One of the best shows I've ever seen. He's is so much. Just everything.
@@theirreverentreader6970 Aw man I'm so jealous! His cover of The Joke by Brandi Carlile will get me every time, he really is an impeccable performer
Me too 😌
I am going to be performing in front of a large audience for the first time in about a month and this video has been so very helpful. This is also one of the songs I train in so double useful. Thank you for this!
Love him and love his acting ability truly everytime I listen the world around me changes.
I saw Evan Hansen on the first tour and I truly want to experience it again with the same actors it was fabulous.
I absolutely love Ben's performance despite all the things that would normally bug me about a performance (usually Rs kill me). The presence is so strong in his performance that it meets the character and supports the imperfect technique. His performance as Evan always brings me to tears or gives me goosebumps. I adore it
Saaaam, you NEED to listen to Waving Through a Window! It's a lot of people's favorite song from DEH and Ben's voice is just insanely good.
Yes!! THE VIDEO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! Ben Platt is amazing!
I saw Ben Platt in concert last year. Amazing!!!!! He is a master of emotion, told the story behind each song on his cd, loved it!
One thing I just love about Ben Platt is every time I see him perform it just makes me smile, like the way he connects to the music just makes me happy
YESSS MORE BEN PLATT REACTIONS or more broadway in general pleaseeee!
Takin' a break from your podcast and your bad opinions on Velveeta cheese to watch this
lmfao appreciate you
It's performances like this that makes me really love musicals. I don't know anything about singing and I can't even carry a tune, but if a singer can really connect to the audience as well as his character and deliver emotions so deep it touches the audience's souls, then I deem it a spectacular show.
I loved the depth of your analysis while also watching you enjoy the experience of Ben Platt's performance.
I feel like sometimes it’s hard to sing in character when a character is so awkward himself and you just have to trust your technique and then you can characterize things how you need to in the moment. He’s so amazing ❤️ It’s also incredibly difficult to sing when you’re crying and all snotty 😂
I love how happy you are in this video.
You could just tell that watching Ben sing gives you joy.
I'm watching on a phone, and can't really make out his face. I don't need to to completely buy this performance. The climax of the song was so powerful.
Ugh, I love this show and I love Sam. So combining the two was a pleasant surprise. I like that you were able to appreciate all the emotion that Ben put into this character. I would love to see you react to Ben's song 'Grow As We Go' as well.
I really appreciate these videos. I aspire to becoming a voice teacher in the future, so getting a head start with some of the terms and being able to start applying them myself is really awesome. I also appreciate that you point out where something might not be technically accurate but allow for artistic license and individual sound.
I have been waiting for this and Sam delivers, thank you Vocal God.
You can’t help but smile when listening to Ben Platt perform. Love it!
omg YES Sam thank you I've been waiting for you to do this 😭
I’ve been waiting for you to review him! So excited!!
I love this so much! Thank you for watching a musical theatre video! I would love to see more:) I enjoyed hearing your comments on Ben! His take on Evan is so beautiful.
IM OBSESSED WITH HIS VOICE 😍😍😍 thank you Sam!!! ❤️
To give you some context,
He is talking to the parents of a so called “fake friend”.
The story is he falls in love with a girl named Zoe. When Zoe’s brother dies, to get closer to Zoe, he says that he knew her brother when he really didn’t.
So the parents of Zoe’s brother asks him how he remembered and got close with him and this is how Evan (Ben Platt) responds. (His character is also on the spectrum!)
I love your videos so much!!!
I love when you do MT videos!!!!
Well, it started with a misunderstanding with Conner and his cast...but pretty much lol.
Yknow i thought he was on the spectrum too so I had looked it up and I'm pretty sure I read many places that it feels like he could be but hes not written that way, he's just very socially anxious
@@emryshale4989 Yeah he could just be socially awkward. I remember the one and only time I saw this show live and basically there was this very pretty girl sitting right behind our seats and she said somethin at the end of the song, she said, "This guy's an asshole." I laughed at hearing that and so did her mom, but I turned to face her and I explained to her during the intermission that that song, and even You Will be Found, was a way to show us just what Evan is willing to do and the stories and lies he's willing to make-up in order to not be forgotten and to not be a loner again. He refuses to be seen as a loner and refuses to be forgotten again. Then her mom also explained something that neither I nor my mom thought of before. She explained to us that Even Hansen starts realizing in You Will Be Found, that he does have people who care about him, but he just doesn't want to be forgotten again because he realizes that he was like Conner before, and that scares him that he could've been Conner. Then he realizes that it isn't worth it to lie to his crush's family and in the end everything still comes crashing down around him, but, one good thing came out of it, he does become more confident in himself and he doesn't feel hurt when his crush stops talking to him because he's more comfortable with his friends that he has that he hadn't before.
Alright, I am on video 10 of Sam’s reactions. Truly can’t get enough! Great videos. Thanks for sharing!
Ben Platt sang his original "Bad Habit" on The Late Show -- I would love it if you would react to that, Sam. Love your channel!
I saw Dear Evan Hansen this past weekend on the West End, such a good show! I loved Ben Platts voice before this and he got me interested in the show, so glad I got to see it; I also love his song covers from the Politician
This is hard for me, a huge Dear Evan Hansen fan, to watch simply because I'm very afraid of the possibility of Ben being roasted
Also if I find any comments clowning on Ben I'm afraid I might have to fight
Same tho
same! I've only listened to one other reaction that I knew would be positive. I hate seeing that people don't like him. i just want to protect him and I weirdly don't want their views sway my opinion differently even though I know it never could.
I saw a live recording someone did of him singing words fail, I was so amazed how he could be so emotive and raw and sound really good still
You have to see this musical! It is SO good. So emotional, and it really showcases talent well, both acting and vocal!
I’ve been waiting for this for SO LONG
I love musical theater! Auditions upcoming, always looking for tips. Thanks for doing an awesome musical theater video Sam!
OMG!!!! The lovely lovely lovely Ben Platt!!!! Thank you so much Sam!!!! He is so talented and I love love love him!!!!!
This is one of my favorite tracks off the Dear Evan soundtrack and Platt does a wonderful job performing with his iconic vocals! Excellent job teaching us some voice lessons and choices of his style of singing! Most educational!
How in the world can your videos be SO entertaining when I have NO idea what you’re talking about?!?!? Keep going Sam, I love your content. It helps me enjoy all these performances even more
recently in the last year, hes come out with a solo album. you should react to it, because hes not in character, its easier to look at his phenomenal technique
one of my favorite songs and live performance!! So surprised to see Sam reacting to this!
You should react to some of the songs off his album and Netflix show(The Politician). He gets so connected to all of his songs, and it shows.
I just want someone to mention about the Sams thumbnail face
be the change
Sam Johnson OMG I love you 😭👋
Ben's performance on Colbert was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and heard. I'm so glad this was the video that was critiqued. ❤
I didn't get the chance to see Ben Platt being Evan, but I did see the musical live and it is amazing and extremely emotional (especially if depression and suicide are familiar themes). I cried my eyes out for half of it, Clare can confirm 😂
It's true, he was so much into character, it really was amazing. Thank you so much for reacting to it, you're a star 🌟
Thank you for reacting to this!
I literally yelled, "YAAAAAASSSS!" when I saw this. Day. Made.
Stephanie Warren me toooooo! Yelling yaaaaaassssssssss!!! 🥳
I love this! I love when you do videos on musicals! ❤❤❤
I will kill for Ben Platt.
I’m just leaving it at that.
If you’re doing Ben Platt now he has some performances from what looks like a 54 below gig. He sings Someone Like You and it’s amazing, would highly recommend checking it out
Love this! I love his skit with James Cordon...he killed it on Hello and All By Myself
Great reaction as usual! covering emotions and giving lessons too
You were smiling 😁 and mouthing the words... I want you to BREAK OUT IN SONG!!! Thank you, I love Ben Platt but I love you more ❤️
How Sam looks when watching Ben Platt is also how I feel when I look at Ben Platt
Sam,since this vlog came out I have seen him performing this song on various TV appearances and I would say that his vocal technique and delivery has really expanded and sounds deeper and richer to me.He just really connects with the viewer/ listener.'Waving Through The Window' on Fallon is another great one.Powerful and emotional.
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO REACT TO DEH OMG YES AHHHHH
I, too, wish I could've seen Ben as Evan live 😔💙
Would love to see your reaction to Ben’s live performance of one of the songs from his album! When he’s just being Ben and not a character.
I damn well love the freeze frames Sam picks for his vids
i always love your videos! your commentary has a quality that i can’t find in other videos. i think it would be interesting if you could react to roth bart baron’s song with HANA (the studio session version). i feel like it has a unique sound to it and i would be interested in your feedback
I have been waiting so long for you to react to Ben!!!!!! YESS!! Please react to one of his other live performenses, like Bad habit or Temporary Love.
I love this performance
The second you talked about the “r”’s and said “you just gotta trust yourself” I almost threw my phone. Every time I sing this song and I get to this and bridge, I get so scared, but I just leap. 💚💙. Thank you so much for this video.
Ben does a lot of breathing through his teeth in songs from The Politician too. I’m not sure if it’s just him putting more character in the song, a style choice, or if they could’ve just cut those parts during editing where there’s a sharp intake of breath.
DO MORE FROM HIS NEW RECORD PLEASE! They're all emotional and incredible songs. I'd recommend "Ease My Mind" and "Grow As We Go"
I’m so happy you reacted to him, now watch him do somewhere live!!! Please!!!???
Ben Platt is one of my all time favourite vocalists.
Ben Platt is Amazing!!!!!!
Sam reacting to Benny I'm DYING
I'm so happy thank you Sam
Also this is my favorite performance of one of my favorite songs
I'm just gonna be that person...
"Performing live gives me SUCH a rush."
I'm not a singer at all and have little understanding of the technical aspects of musicals, but I can absolutely appreciate how this song was written. All the changes in modulation (not even sure if that's the right word for it) that incorporate the changes behind the lyrics are just amazing to me. The fact that someone wrote it with that understanding of the speed and unintended manner in which the alteration of the story line starts growing out of control just boggles my mind. It gives me a whole different layer of appreciation when I hear well-written, well-performed songs that are a story within a story. On another note, his variation between the higher and lower notes with his falsetto (still no clue if that's the right way to say it) reminds me of teenage boy voice changes, which is totally what I thought he was going for specifically as another layer of that song.
Incredible performance by Ben , so talented 🤩🤩
Magnetic ♥️ get lost in his voice 🔥🔥
You need to react to Ben Platt singing “Somewhere”
Ben Platt 😭♥️
I simply love Sam reacting to theater performers 💛
Ben Platt!!!!!!!! YAAAAAASSSSSSSS!!!
Just saw the road show in San Diego... Stephen Christopher Anthony was Evan and was amazing. Great show great cast.
I saw this yesterday in London and Marcus Harman was Evan (Sam Tutty's Alternate) and he was astounding. You need to see this show x
Hi Sam. I love your videos. You may not want to do another Ben Platt reaction, but I'd love to see you react to him singing Waving Through A Window from the same show.
Oh yeahhh! You should react to more of Ben Platt, he's soo good :)
And Jeremy Jordan too (She used to be mine or some other live performances)
I saw Ben Platt on Broadway for Dear Evan Hansen during for his last week, and no words, just tears. He was spectacular. It is going to be unfair to see another actor playing this role because Ben Platt played it masterfully and to me at least, no one is gonna be even close to his performance. Thank UA-cam for these videos around.
Wow, that was beautiful beyond words and I loved hearing your thoughts on this. 🙊
If we are talking musical though, Katie Rose Clarke rendition of Still hurting is a powerful one a well.
Please more broadway related stuff!! I think your take on voice is so unique, and broadway voices of course have to be great to be successful, but the choices and techniques are all so different. I’d love to hear you cover more!
Can we all just appreciate the thumbnail. Thank you
