  • At DeepMind, we’re embarking on one of the greatest adventures in scientific history. Our mission is to solve intelligence, to advance science and benefit humanity.
To make this possible, we bring together scientists, designers, engineers, ethicists, and more, to research and build safe artificial intelligence systems that can help transform society for the better.
By combining creative thinking with our dedicated, scientific approach, we’re unlocking new ways of solving complex problems and working to develop a more general and capable problem-solving system, known as artificial general intelligence (AGI). Guided by safety and ethics, this invention could help society find answers to some of the most important challenges facing society today.
We regularly partner with academia and nonprofit organisations, and our technologies are used across Google devices by millions of people every day. From solving a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology with AlphaFold and synthesising voices with WaveNet, to mastering complex games with AlphaZero and preserving wildlife in the Serengeti, our novel advances make a positive and lasting impact.
Incredible ideas thrive when diverse people join together. With headquarters in London and research labs in Paris, New York, Montreal, Edmonton, and Mountain View, CA, we’re always looking for great people from all walks of life to join our mission.
Learn more at deepmind.com/about and apply for open roles at deepmind.com/careers.

Deep mind is remarkable, and so damn inspiring. They have already contributed so much positive to the world and it's barely been a noticeable amount of time in human history. It’s a great approach with amazing applications. Unfortunately: (1) not everyone plays by the rules, so there will be intentionally harmful AI (2) even under the best of circumstances, AI can make decisions which lead to very negative consequences for humans. (3) While future AI might be similar to very smart people, they will likely be taking actions at speeds and scales which humans will not be able to understand, anticipate or control with unforeseen impacts.
The AI age is coming one way or the other over the next 100 years. If it’s unregulated… Asimov once postulated that humans may merely be a footnote in history as contributors to the birth of AI…

Here’s a suggestion from a fan. Aid governments in non biased non corrupt decision making. This can make an impact on a macro scale but also very much on a civilian level. Just think of how AI can make sure people that being treated fairly by their own government.
To train the AI for such an important task you need the people’s confidence, I suggest you start with setting it up as a customer service rep. Various companies could benefit from this and the people would be helped by not having to deal with long phone calls or being treated unfairly.

Controlling plasma in fusion reactors!!! I always love it when I learn I share a thought with a really smart person. I literally had that idea just in my head on my own a few weeks ago: what if neural nets could be used to manipulate the electromagnetic fields to control the plasma - could be a really useful way of applying this technology, because apparently having the plasma stay in shape you want has been in a major pain for the engineers trying to make fusion reactors happen. I was just day dreaming and speculating, but it makes me happy to hear someone smart shares an idea with me. I had the same thing with Laplace’s demon when I was very young. It’s nice to learn a thought you had was thought by someone else who is smart.

    Bertrand Russell:
So long as we adhere to the conventional notions of mind and matter, we are condemned to a view of perception which is miraculous. We suppose that a physical process starts from a visible object, travels to the eye, there changes into another physical process, causes yet another physical process in the optic nerve, and finally produces some effect in the brain, simultaneously with which we see the object from which the process started, the seeing being something "mental", totally different from the physical processes which precede and accompany it. This view is so queer that metaphysicians have invented all sorts of theories designed to substitute something less incredible.

The program is based on simple mathematical models of neurons, such as the Hodgkin-Huxley equation, and can simulate neural firing based on already fully mapped C. elegans connectomes and physiological parameters.
Doing this produces a nematode-like movement. It can run in your browser as well as in small robots.

NNs aren't magic, they plot relationships between inputs that correlate - they're just linear algebra, the same thing your gpu does when it renders a 3d model.

I think that there are problems out there that AI will smash out of the park. The first is politics. Our systems kind of work at the moment, but they are so slow. Take the impact of pesticides on bees. The whole process of investigation, submitting reports, gathering support and putting pressure on politians to eventually getting the law changed just takes too long. Humans in a group are smart enough to figure this stuff out, but it takes us too long. This is where AI will make a huge difference. I'd love to have a "gov" app which just asked me questions every few weeks. Where would I like my taxes to go? NHS, schools, police, defense? And I could just move the little sliders around. No need for a huge government full of MPs, make all this stuff happen faster, make it work for the many, not the few. Make it work for young people, for those who need it to work for them. Rant over. Please fix all this stuff for us DeepMind lol

sure, that's why it needs a lot of caring people that won't hesitate to crush powerful, rich or egotistical driven people.
We tend to forget, makers of complex systems require lots of critical thinking people.
if lots of reasonable people like mentioned above to destroy/forcefully do something, it will have a train of logical thoughts greater than most are willing to try to push their thinking...
So it might be, that the best way to get happy & healthy humans is to kill most. We mostly are half egotistical savages, 1/4 emotional & up to 1/4 logical.
What do you think of that ?
if humans have trouble 1/2 time keeping their bedroom, let alone their home organized and healthy, less 1/4 of the time do good effective politics can't we agreed that AI would just be better governors.

OK, so if you have "achieved so much" why is it neither you nor any one else has written a program which can converse in a manner remotely close to that of a human?
