hi there no fun or excitement in being safe .think of all the things you may have missed , trip to the hospitable, helicopter ride ,pretty nurses , broken bones , i mean there where so many cool things to look forward to , but you did have Chris so that was more fun , great show , best to all john
John when we are younger we think we are immortal and nothing will hurt us. But as we get older many of us get a bit smarter and try to be safer with the jobs we do. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
Tony and Chris hit the nail on the head, being safe is #1. Yes, firewood can be fun and safe all in 1. The next thing is knowing your limits and not getting yourself in a pickle or in the ER. Great video To y and Chris, wise words from guys who have knowledge and who have been in spots before, experience and passing on knowledge is key. The cost of the tool is usually cheaper than a ER visit or worse, I want to cut wood another day and keep all my limbs. 👍🏻👍🏻
Very timely video. Thanks Tony! I’ve got a similar snag here and another brand of capstan winch. You answered a couple of questions so I’ll be out in the snow today working on it
Peter, regardless of the brand when you can use mechanical advantage whether manual or gas powered it will make the job easier and safer. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
That’s a great little winch Tony and a great demonstration of its capability. It’s not cheap but it can be used for a lot of things other than tree work. That makes the investment more sensible. I really like the unlimited pull length… just like the Maasdam.
Dick, as you know from your landscaping business quality equipment is not cheap but it makes the job go faster and safer. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
Ron for snowmobile recovery or getting your UTV/ATV , truck the portable winch is awesome for getting you out of trouble. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
Great video Tony. I've got my eye on a tree in our KY property that's hung up. It's on the side of a steep hill so no way to get a tractor up there. This would be a great option.
Steve, I know you love equipment and the Portable Winch would definitely be a great addition to your tool arsenal. This time of the year We use it for deer retrieval on steep hills or ravines. This piece of equipment is so multifunction for your property. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
Great job as always Tony. Chris too! Just wanted to let you know I’ve been using the iHood heated vest (that I won from you awhile back) while hunting the mornings the past few weeks. Man is that nice! The heated collar feature is my favorite. I can stay in the woods a bit longer in comfort! Thanks again! Take care.
Funny you should mention it, this is the second year I wore my vest during archery season and it definitely lets me stay out longer. I agree I love the heated collar. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
David the Portable Winch is the most expensive of the three I showed but it sure makes life easy and it’s so multi functional it’s a pleasure to use. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
Jeff, yes the Portable Winch is super popular in Alaska for retrieving Moose, bear and your giant deer. it’s an amazing piece of equipment. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
You are so right, necessity is the mother of invention and there are other options you can use or come up with. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
In this particular instance it was not that hard of a pull but using a tree saver in a choker configuration is like putting a torniquet on the redirect tree. 😉
No this was an easy tree for sure but we wanted Tao show the basics of how to get down safely if you don’t have access to tractor or UTV available. Chris says you’re a logger so I’m sure you could teach us a few things as well. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
@@TonysCoolTools You did a great job of showing the basics👍 I was merely pointing out the tree saver being used in a choker configuration on a live tree which could cause its cambium layer damage, I had never considered it before becoming involved with off-roading and the possible damage caused by improper usage of tree savers when winching 4X4s in off road situations. I am old enough to know that I do not know everything and always willing to listen and learn which is one of the reasons I was watching your video for any tips and tricks I might learn. Logging, Fire Dept, Arborist, and even 4X4 recovery all use ropes, winch, blocks and pulley redirects.
John that’s a tough question since there are several good brands but I’ve been using Samson 1/2” & 3/4 (bull rope) rigging ropes to tension or use as safety ropes. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
Definitely a possibility, but a 10’ chain would be really dangerous. The longer the rope the better for safety. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Using a cheap 12 volt winch, mounted to a 2x12, with the battery nearby, would also work. Good idea here Tony.

Can you recommend a good tree rope to buy for pulling tree down. 150 foot
John that’s a tough question since there are several good brands but I’ve been using Samson 1/2” & 3/4 (bull rope) rigging ropes to tension or use as safety ropes.

Amazon has too many to choose from
John, that’s the problem with Amazon they give you so many choices.

OR you could have used one of those PORTABLE trucks and a ten-foot chain and it would have been faster and easier!
Definitely a possibility, but a 10’ chain would be really dangerous. The longer the rope the better for safety.
