Talent like this comes along once or twice in a century. If Gould were alive, that would make two great, passionate pianists. There are many pianists, but none that even touch her sheer LOVE of music. You gotta LOVE music. Her passion, technique, and willingness to break with tradition by improvising on Beethoven or Mozart . . . her gift is beyond measure.
I'm so happy because after 80 years of life I meet a pianist and sensitive human being like you VALENTINA LISITSA....I'm falling in love to your way to plaing piano....You play whith your sould....Congratulation.....GOD BLESS YOU.....From BRAZIL WITH LOVE AND APLAUSE....
Angele Dubeau and Valentina have both chosen this, and they are each the most beautiful testaments. If only together ... Thank you for posting. Beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful!!!! But beautiful in a profoundly melancholic way. I also speak Russian...and there is a perfect word in Russian to describe this, "Zhal".....which is type of deep saddness.
you are the only one, expressing the tenderness chapters that bring me intense feelings, just like what I mean, but not many people can understand and express it right
I am totally in love with these two cds, especially the second one. I have listened to it over and over and it hypnotises me with its beauty. I love all your work but this is very special, it could have been written for you!
I have a great inspiration for this Artist . She gives us something great , something come from I don't now where ... So , a lot of respect . Thank you !
A modo de corolario a mi comentario anterior. Solamente admiro de esta profunda manera a dos mujeres: La Divina Valentina Lisitsa y La Divina Eva Tobalina!!!
Some people need to lighten up! It is know ones right to criticize the musical "tastes" of another. Music takes on many colours and forms. This piece even though simplistic is beautiful.
Dear Val: I'm not familiar with Glass' music, but I REALLY liked this piece. Will have to buy the album and familiarize myself with his music. You're my musical HERO, and your willingness to share your talents with your fans via UTube is GREATLY appreciated!!! Oh, and you looked especially lovely on this video!
Wonderfully haunting piece and performance. I have come to appreciate Glass' works over time, so much so that I now find many of them mesmerizing in their simplicity. His score to "The Hours" is perfectly suited for the film in my opinion, and Valentina's interpretation is true to his vision. Thank you, both. I was surprised to see the smaller-sized piano used for this recording (is that a Steinway B?). Wondered if that was a choice from the composer or just what was available for the session. Anyway, brava!
Peter Vantine Nice isn't it Pete? And Ms. Lisitsa plays it well - with feeling. Tonight, Tuesday,April 7, the 78-year old Mr. Glass appears at the Free Library of Philadelphia to discuss his book Words Without Music. Of course it is sold out. I told Kris to tell John to go - if for no other reason than to say he saw Philip Glass. Alas, sold out. But Ms. Lisitsa does well, doesn't she? She plays other Of Glass' works too. Must listen to them as well.
Genius is a heavy thing to carry around; It sits, unmoving, in the hollow pits of your skull its weight crushing the fragile shell of your eyes and everything they see You shift its weight from limb to limb juggling your fatigue between your many souls -- sometimes you’re a musician your fingers slay deadbeat strings or spill your burden on smooth white keys your larynx carves pathways for the howls from the acid pits of your stomach sometimes you’re a dancer and you let its weight sway you like a gyroscope unhinged at the balls of your dainty feet sometimes you’re a poet and there is nothing to console you its weight becomes your anvil and you bend the words to rhyme you bend the words to beauty But your tendons are all frayed now Your poems are all weary The cold neon glow of equations is but a rundown stuttering signboard and genius isn’t getting any lighter its burden quietly growing like a rock in your coat pocket dragging you another inch deep into the river
I like seeing a bit of a different side to Valentina. Playing something well, that is actually playable. She must be bored to death, but I appreciate listening without feeling that anything she plays is years out of my reach. 😊
I play this piece-sometimes all the way through without screwing it up-it sounds lie a different piece altogether though when Valentina Lisitsa plays it-makes me wonder why I persist?
An artist should have the right to speak!! Her concert to Toronto is the only concert I was planning to attend and it ended up getting cancelled... I don't get it!!!!
Beautiful playing... However, I wanted to share that I cannot bring myself to appreciate Philip Glass works such as this... I don't get it, what's so amazing about this piece? I can understand minimalism, but repetitive and trivial structure in both harmony and arrangement of it makes it sub-par to most Hollywood movie music (to my ear at least). It just seems bland and fails to impact me in any way. I really don't know. The music V. Lisitza plays usually is of the variety that I easily and wholeheartedly appreciate (and a lot!). However, with Philip Glass, I just don't get it. Is there a method to this madness? Please help me understand and appreciate this music.
TheGrandBrand I totally get where you're coming from, as I've tried listening to several works by Glass and I get bored of them quite fast. BUT that is not the case for the Metamorphosis series, specifically the Branka Parlic interpretations of them (available here on UA-cam). Individually, they are repetitive, but listen to them all in sequence. You can really see how the very simple motif transforms through metamorphoses 1-4. And then the 5th one is *almost* exactly like the first one, but not quite the same. I found that very odd. But then, it suddenly dawned on me what he wanted to express: things have come full circle. Whatever was carrying out its metamorphosis has reverted back to its roots, but slightly changed now, due to its journey. It's the old "we change, yet remain the same" idea perfectly trasmitted through music. Been a fan of the guy ever since, boring pieces and all! :) I'm actually learning all the metamorphoses by heart now.
Johann Hartono For this not much, maybe half an hour or even less, she is very skilled, you can see that in a video where, for 2 or 3 hours, she practices and its amazing
great piece. shame on the TSO. Canadian PM Harper, instead of sending skilled diplomats to build a peace, he sends military personnel. Shameful warmongering, imo.
I'm sorry but this piece is just a name. It has no development of harmonic or melodic theory past the early-mid 1800's and is vastly less adept at maneuvering and also little usage of techniques or melodic development of it's parts. The only reason it's taken seriously is the name; "Glass".
It appears that not even Valentina with all her wonderful musicality, is capable of making "listenable" the most repetitive, boring and overrated pseudo-composer in the history of music. Please Valentina, change your recording goals again and leave behind this project that I am sure will make you some money, but takes you apart from the good music. Just my opinion of course!
My friend: I'm unacquainted with Glass' music, having been immersed for over 60 years in the realm of what we know as "classical" music. But you must admit that at least this piece IS quite lovely--don't you think??? Anyway, be understanding of Valentina's endeavors to bring beauty to those of us who are her devoted fans. After all, she MUST make a living, and it is increasingly hard for classical pianists to do so because of the deteriorating musical "tastes" of younger people, and the musical ignorance that they display. I don't think that Val is going to abandon the music we love, but let's all support this wonderfully talented woman's efforts to bring a degree of beauty and culture into our humdrum lives.
Times change, life changes, and music changes. People will hold on to the greats of the past and will sometimes embrace the present. There is no consensus onto what is beautiful and what is not. There is strength in this piece, and I can feel the introspective array of energy that subsides from it. Each to his own of course.
I've been playing guitar now for about five or six years and can now comfortably play grade 8 classical pieces and I can now say with certainty that their is very little relationship between the difficulty of a piece and its quality. Sure, the piece might be easy but it doesn't mean it sucks...
It appears to me people still stereoptype even music. Forget about who composed the piece and just LISTEN. There is a beauty so lovely in this piece. Haven't heard such a beaty in a long time. Truly suits the title. Dead things. :)
Whalli Blank Boring !!! Harmonically Boring, Melodically Boring, Rhythmically boring, no counterpoint, no surprises, tenderness? simplicity?? Erik Satie´s Gymnopedies to mention just one, but Glass? c´mon, he is boring, boring, boring. I love the way Valentina plays, she is one of the greatest pianists of our time, but the "music" of Glass is BORING to say the least!!! ...and well, to prevent people from throwing things at me, I am forced to write: IMHO ;-)

This piece of music goes straight into my soul. Philip Glass + Valentina... you can't get any better than this.
Anything Valentina plays sounds good.
One of my favourite pieces of Glass by one of my favourite pianists, sublime stuff.
Minimalism at its finest, yet so powerful!

I love seeing you play more contemporary pieces...this is so smooth, even and lovely.
you are the only one, expressing the tenderness chapters that bring me intense feelings, just like what I mean, but not many people can understand and express it right
This is listenable, I absolutely love it! Val go on, your true fans will give you thumbs up!
fabulous .. Love you Valentina
Божественно, мои апплодисменты Вам, привет из северной Карелии!
I am totally in love with these two cds, especially the second one. I have listened to it over and over and it hypnotises me with its beauty. I love all your work but this is very special, it could have been written for you!
Valentina you're so wonderful, I'll never forge your moonlight sonata, you're my favourite pianist ever!

Beyond beautiful. Perfect music for these dark days. Magic from Kiev.
I love it... so different from your usual pieces.... reminds me of 1970s movie music backing......
I'm learning to play this piece, I always come back to this video for some guidance. Thank you!
I know what you mean! I finally “finished it today”. Still perfecting it. Hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do!
Wow! This is another Philip Glass emotionally played by Valentina Lisitsa!
I have a great inspiration for this Artist . She gives us something great , something come from I don't now where ... So , a lot of respect . Thank you !
this was hauntingly beautiful valentina! thanks for a moving performance!
It's amazing that something with such a dreadful name can be so stunning!
Congrats, very beautiful indeed. Didn't know I liked that music so much, even tho I know Glass.
A modo de corolario a mi comentario anterior. Solamente admiro de esta profunda manera a dos mujeres: La Divina Valentina Lisitsa y La Divina Eva Tobalina!!!
Lovely, beautiful, sublime.
Would love lisitza playing some glass's estudes!
Очередное волшебство!
Beautifully played! Thank you Valentina.
Шикарно!
Some people need to lighten up! It is know ones right to criticize the musical "tastes" of another. Music takes on many colours and forms. This piece even though simplistic is beautiful.
Amazing how she can get so emotionally involved in such a..minimal tune.
Minimal? This may not be Beethoven or Chopin but it is one of my favorites. You jono are the minimalist
@@GaryWParton What a marvel she is. I'm a subscriber. But you're right. My minimal work ethic has gotten me to where I am today..
Captivatingly awesome!
Viva, Valentina, 🥰🥰🥰
Absolutely beautiful.
Typically I don't like too much of Glass, but this is gorgeous.
Just Beautiful..
Great to relax to ... thanks for posting
Bravo al infinito!!!
Very soothing
Beautiful!

You are beautiful!!
She could play a C Major scale and make it sound out of this world
Always magnificent..!

Genius is a heavy thing to carry around;
It sits, unmoving, in the hollow pits of your skull
its weight crushing the fragile shell of your eyes
and everything they see
You shift its weight from limb to limb
juggling your fatigue
between your many souls --
sometimes you’re a musician
your fingers slay deadbeat strings
or spill your burden on smooth white keys
your larynx carves pathways for the howls
from the acid pits of your stomach
sometimes you’re a dancer
and you let its weight sway you
like a gyroscope unhinged
at the balls of your dainty feet
sometimes you’re a poet
and there is nothing to console you
its weight becomes your anvil
and you bend the words to rhyme
you bend the words to beauty
But your tendons are all frayed now
Your poems are all weary
The cold neon glow of equations is but
a rundown stuttering signboard
and genius isn’t getting any lighter
its burden quietly growing
like a rock in your coat pocket
dragging you another inch deep
into the river
Interesting poem! :)
I like seeing a bit of a different side to Valentina. Playing something well, that is actually playable. She must be bored to death, but I appreciate listening without feeling that anything she plays is years out of my reach. 😊
dead things isn't as easy as it looks, it requires multiple advanced technique skills
Wonderful !
I absolutely love this song :D
meraviglioso... per altri mondi
I can't tell you how I love what you do, I hope I'll be a good pianist too, and no one can play better than you. I also want to meet you one day
Knock-knock, who's there? Knock-knock, who's there? Knock-knock, who's there? Phillip Glass

J'aimerai entendre Valentina interpréter du Satie...
Way to little views here. Beautiful piece
GOOOOOOOOD)))))
I play this piece-sometimes all the way through without screwing it up-it sounds lie a different piece altogether though when Valentina Lisitsa plays it-makes me wonder why I persist?
👏🏻
really great song do you have a music share of it ?
❤
IM YOUR FAN
An artist should have the right to speak!! Her concert to Toronto is the only concert I was planning to attend and it ended up getting cancelled... I don't get it!!!!
Does anybody knows where can I get the sheet 👀?
This music is like sewed for me with the movie "The Hours"..
What is the name of this piece
Dead Things
😥😥
Goddess
Такое мягкое "женское" исполнение. Чувственное.
ValentinaLisitsa You live in my heart! 😌💎💕💓come to Brasil, come to @municipalsp 🎵 please😔
Daniella Thiemi not são paulo but brasilia... and yes valentina please come to brasilia
It's like Italian Ezio Bosso -- Following a bird --
What a small piano, where is the imperial Bosendorfer?
No, it's a Beckender Schmalder.
Valentina Lisitsa Hello, is it me, you’re looking for?…Are you rich? I´m single!
hey guys, anybody who has sheets for this piece? Don't have time for learning it only by listening. I would be really thankful ! :)
Мы и сами уже мертвы, слава мёртвому Богу.

bennemann Nice. Hopefully you upload your interpretations in the near future.
CHURINDOK I have my interpretations of Metamorphoses 1 (very similar to Branka Parlic's) and 3 (my own twist) up here: soundcloud.com/mr-nantes
CHURINDOK
CHURINDOK Excellent pieces. Thank you. Do you record by keyboard or piano. And if it's piano, where do you place the mic?
It should be a Steinway D.
I wonder how many hours she spend everyday practicing...
Johann Hartono For this not much, maybe half an hour or even less, she is very skilled, you can see that in a video where, for 2 or 3 hours, she practices and its amazing
Magdalena Salmanowicz Damn... That's a long practice hours...
How is that long? I would love practicing 12 hours but NOOO, highschool has to keep me down e.e
Johann Hartono Yes, it is true what they told you. She mentioned on a interview that she practices 10 to 12 hours if she got time.
Johann Hartono 12 when she can.
타악기를. 현악기처럼. 연주하네

sounds like improv by the garage band keyboardist
great piece. shame on the TSO. Canadian PM Harper, instead of sending skilled diplomats to build a peace, he sends military personnel. Shameful warmongering, imo.
Alfred Newman What does that have to do with Philip Glass or Valentina Lisitsa?
Some people...
same type of hate-mongering. PM sets the tone. he's the leader here in the Cdn "gaystapo" country.

Take it up with Philip Glass. See ya...
Maybe it's simplicity is the reason it's such a great piece
do you ask ambient music composers and makers why their music has no development of harmonic or melodic theory? Or why there are so many loops, lol?
Aaand another petulant elitist criticizing the music of Glass while missing it's point by a mile.
i dont dislike the piece but every glass composition sounds the same
Even more poignant today with the awful events in Ukraine.
