  • In this video I talk about extended oil change and transmission fluid service intervals in modern vehicles. Why manufacturers are giving stretched service schedules of 20,000km 30,000km, 40,000km & even 50,000km!!
Example : A ZF HP transmission is classed as a lifetime fluid by BMW but not by the actually company that makes it!
This information can save you thousands in major repairs if you plan on keeping your vehicle outside the manufactures warranty. The more informed you are, the better decisions you can make :)

This is a sensitive topic that I have discussed extensively over the years, I have found that the more you know the better decisions you can make for your own personal needs.
Here is a link of a video of a ZF service information demo - ua-cam.com/video/D0f3AYoE3cI/v-deo.html

As always thanks for watching 🙏

The manufacturers claiming these extended intervals often add a phrase it the fine print; "Under normal driving conditions." Well "Normal" conditions they say do not include temperature extremes, dusty conditions, excessive idling, excessive city or stop and go driving or numerous short trips of less than 10 miles. (What is that like 20 kilometers?) So, basically Laboratory conditions. No body drives like that. I live in Arizona, it's hot, dusty the large cities have jam packed rush hour freeways and the AC is on almost all year. I change my oil (whether conventional or synthetic) at 5000 miles, ATF at 30,000 miles manual trans, xfer cases and diffs at 50,000. What the mfg's say is "Lifetime" is the life of the Warranty after that they don't care. Thanks Mr. Burke for taking on this touchy subject.

    Totally correct Gerard!
It's always about the money. I always recommend 10,000 for a service, in-tank fuel filter a maximum of 100,000, trans service 100,000, coolant hoses 200,000 as a general rule if not specified earlier by the manufacturer. We are not doing the customer any favours if we try and extend the servicing. It might save money short-term, but they will pay in the long run. It's our experience that should drive the service intervals. As you have shown, we have seen it all.
    Great job as usual mate.
It was great to catch up a few weeks ago. 😁👍

Automatic gearbox should be 70-80k max. Manual is 100k max. Fuel economy savings make up for the cost anyway. Usually end up getting 0.5-1mpg better anyway

Ive had many BMW over the years and key to happy motoring is .... Preventive Maintenance. Simples. Change parts before they fail. Dont wait for the bang. Ive a F15 M50d and she gets an oil change and a treatment every six months, gotta keep clean fresh oil flowing threw 3 turbo's

Excellent topic to discuss, when i try to explain what extending oil invervals is like to non car people i use the analogy of washing the dishes. That extening oil changes is like trying to wash your dishes in the same sink with the same dish water for a whole week. It helps get the point across. 😂

I agree totally with you on this subject.
Going further into it would be the subject of the manufactures changing to thinner oil grades resulting in shorter engine life.
All for the sake of looking more efficient and less friction.

  • @darrenrubbo5136
    @darrenrubbo5136 Місяць тому +1

Totally agree, all manufacturers have way to long between services, i keep seeing so many engine failures, wet belt failures and chain failures. Seems to be that most cars are not lasting to 100k miles these days . I'm convinced that changing the oil under 10k would help keep all these engines to keep going. Buying a used higher mileage car is a ticking time bomb.

For the last few years, car manufacturers have made financial (almost actuarial) judgements about when a vehical should be serviced, not a decision based on mechanical wear. My last two cars have had 2 year / 18k miles (29k kms) service intervals, but I don’t like leaving the oil & filter in that long.

    I have a 170 k 535d m57 engine.
It had 154k on it when I got it. I have done 2 oil flushes and on the 2nd one I kept the engine on a high idle for 20 mins. A little sludge came out.
I realise this is a very very contentious topic using a flush.
Car running flawlessly since last flush for 1k.
I also serviced the auto gearbox.
Thank you for the video Gérard I enjoy them emmensley

I own 60 year old cars with hundreds of thousands of miles on them. They get gearbox, diff and engine oil changes regularly, engines every 3 000 and gearboxes, diffs and grease nipples every 10 000kms.

Basically a manufacture understanding of a life time is about 8 years, So what they mean is they expect the gearbox to last 8 years so no oil change is needed. changing the oil will make it last longer than that.

Look at the service regime the maker offering 10 year warranty specifies (Toyota, 10 years so long as you get it serviced by Toyota when reqd), no long life oil service rubbish there, every major service brakes get properly cleaned and serviced, not aware of any other mainstream maker who does that.
Does anyone ask themselves why supposedly superior engineered cars are only warranted for 3 years?
My own cars get fresh oil every 3k max, and regular transmission and diff oil changes, plus annual brake maintenance etc, all DIY, they're 19 and 16 years old and totally reliable.

Majority of dealerships/manufacturers define 'lifetime ' around 5 years.
Manufacturers want you to buy a new vehicle every 5 years, they even make engine parts to fail before/around 5 years, and are non replaceable!
Ignore dealerships/manufacturers advice, and service your vehicle at least once every year, if you drive a diesel, then twice per year for oil/filter change.

BMW advocates these lengthy service intervals purely for one reason. To be able to compete with cheaper brands for fleet customers. Less servicing means BMW fleet can offer cheaper leasing deals. No other reason.

I have used an oil extractor for 10 years and it's paid for itself many times over.
My wife's Suzuki Vitara was serviced at the main dealer and even though it averages only 3K miles a year the oil was pretty much spent after 12 months. It came out of warranty in February so did an oil and filter change and will do again every 6 months.
The funny thing when I did service on the Vitara, for the first time in 10 years I undid the sump nut and drained it....only because I had to drop the underguard to get the filter off 🤨
I'd be interested to know what sort of age/mileage to replace the automatic gearbox oil on the Vitara, its a 2020 1.4T 6 speed, as Suzuki say it's sealed for life.

Bottom line is that companies lack incentive to make their vehicles last beyond the warranty period. People are going to buy more cars if the require less maintenance so the car companies will stretch the intervals as much as possible so long as the vehicles will last the warranty period.
20k+ km for engine oil is absurd, a more reasonable interval would be 7-10k km depending on driving style with fully synthetic oil.

    • @mbvalency

back in the days it was 1 year or 10.000 km. Depending on the conditions you could stretch that a bit, but the long life cycles are crazy.

BMW officially declared, lifetime means 150000km. The transmission will Last 150000, and maybe more. Only if you abuse it, it will break. I change the transmission oil every 50000km, but you only get 60% of the old oil by changing it. No Problem, we Sell our cars always under 200000.
