It's almost like watching an alternate universe where England qualified for USA 94 😆

I was at this game at RFK Stadium whilst on holiday in the US. I forgot how good the game was.
Earl Barrett. Good lord.
He was usually about third or fourth choice. The two main options were Lee Dixon and Rob Jones, but they both kept getting injured.

The mighty Careca's last flourish but even aged 32/33 he was still a real handful for the English defence.
Why didn’t he play in 94? That’s not that old...pity.
@@goldenboy06 Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira preferred Romario as his central attacker for USA '94 with Bebeto as his partner. Brazil's ultimate victory obviously vindicated this choice. From 1986-1990 Careca was one of the world's most lethal and talented forwards, but by '94 that critical half-yard of pace had gone and Parreira rightly decided younger talent in attack was needed to succeed.

should have been first choice. better than seaman.
@@daveratcliffe1016 He had a stint between the sticks for England in 1995 and made a series of blunders that confirmed Seaman as first choice.

It's basically only a step up from a friendly and the kind of game you give non-first choice players a run-out in, as opposed to them playing in games that mattered?
This was around about the time that some of Bobby Robson's players were coming to the end of their careers and Graham Taylor was looking to replace the likes on Beardsley, Lineker, Bryan Robson, Woods and others and so looking at and to the likes of Clough, Merson, Platt, Sinton, Shearer and Ian Wright as possibles to take over.
That said, there wasn't much wrong with any of those names you mentioned anyway, albeit that they were not world beaters all the same:
Sinton and Barrett were reliable and decent pros, if nothing special, England historically always had several decent keepers prior to the influx of foreign keepers so giving Flowers a start, and Sharpe as a youngster looked every bit as promising as Giggs and Beckham if Ferguson had handled him better and more like he did with Giggs.

But for David Platt I suspect Taylor's reign would have been roughly two years shorter.
How this Brazil team won the World Cup the following year is beyond me. Worst world cup I have seen . My First World Cup was 1982. Brazil were sensational then!

Well they had Romario and Bebeto up front - that's still better than pretty much everyone else. They also had the likes of Leonardo, even though he got suspended after an elbow in '94.
They weren't as exciting as '82, but in '82 they were knocked out by winners Italy. Just shows you need a balanced team , not just the best attacking one.
1990 was far worse.
No South Africa 2010 was surely the worse.

Typical England. Their only result from this tournement was against the eventual winners of the actual tournement which they didn't even qualify for anyway.
I feel for Graham Taylor. We didn't exactly have a plethora of talented players at the time, did we?

I still to this day can't belive the likes of Palmer, Batty, Sinton and Dorigo won as many caps as they did.
