I'm curious if just gluing a CPU heatsink to the back of your device might not work just as well. I mean they come in all shapes and sizes, you can sand down the rough edges of the sink and they can probably be cooled with ambient air since they wouldn't be in a closed environment. And if you wanted to you could add a fan- I guess. They make tablet and cellphone grips that look like this already so all you would really be doing is changing out the material with a better heat conductor.
I'm surprised at these results. I've seen other benchmarks that suggest that the fan in the Red Dragon 3s doesn't provide enough cooling effect to boost performance. Your test seemed to show otherwise. BTW, I believe your can use the software to turn the fan off, which could allow you to run the same test, but the fan off, and compare the results.

I have a custom designed ice pack for my iPad and it wraps around it like a case and it’s freezing and it keeps my iPad so cold I have the last iPad to come out with the 120hz display
I used to open my phones, and add thermal paste to the shield and then the case all the time, it helped significantly. One I even bolted a Pentium II heatsink to.
Back in 2008-ish I added an old Pentium 1 cooler to the back of my phone because my phone would get so hot when both charging in the car and using maps that it would quickly slow down and stop charging then die. I did it by adding thermal paste on the block and surrounding it in hot glue then sticking it to the phone. It was very easy to rewire a car charger to use the full 12 volts of the car, which I added a standard molex plug for the fan. It worked great though it was a bit bulky and stabby in the pocket if I put it in the wrong way.
I kinda wonder what the Red Magic would look like on the Flir if you gave it the tec 'cause you did isolate the hot spot. You can't possibly make it worse with more cooling (well you can... it is a tec, after all. But it would certainly be interesting)
I think phones should have a piece of copper on the SoC that can be accessed from the rear with a removable cover on it (the cover is so you don't burn your fingers while holding the phone) so when you put something like a case or other accessory on it, it has the opportunity to act as a proper cooler. After all glass isn't great for conducting heat. Lol.
I think the reason why the magic phone suprisingly hotter than the note 10 is because the fan is mounted inside the phone and encased by metal back (Which in general is thermal conductor). But with the heat trapped inside is then generated by the fan which flows directly into other thermal conductive mechanisms that are commonly mounted on the front glass panel. Given there are tiniest holes as vents and the thick metal back will more likely sucking the air in the beginning and the gap between. Leaves the front panel warmth as opposed to metal back ( even though glass are insulators and poor thermal conductors) it would act like an electric stove.
My Note 9 got great performance from using an M.2 heat sink with builtin fan. I held it in place using the case and clever rubber band technique without covering screen.

Linus, those 5V TEC's love power, I have played around with a few of them myself, and my findings are that they draw around 3A on startup, but as they reach their 'thermoequilibrium of operation', they are drawing around 2.2-2.8A from a 5V power source; your bottleneck is probably either A: that your power bank can only supply 1-2A of current, or B: that the terrible implementation of the micro-USB is limiting current to around 2A. if they had used a type-c USB, and specified that you utilize a power source capable of sustained 3A, than this product would almost definitely perform much better.
I know this comment is very old now but I have a question. What part number(?) were you using? I am planning to use these 5v TECs for the same purpose, a DIY phone cooler like in the video.
This is the only comment I want to see despite these "linus linus" comments. I mean, you're absolutely correct. the powerbank can't deliver more power to the cooling fan which as a result slow perfomance. he could have been used 2A-3A charging adapter and see its full potential
@@FirstGateNAN the problem is that most of the USB port of the coolers are using are the cheap/ standard ones so the micro USB will only go up to 2A or worse. I think it won't even support the 5V 3A of power bricks nowadays(but maybe it will, I might be wrong). All the Phone coolers that use TEC modules that I see online only support up to 5V 1.5A to 2A only and the expensive ones support 5V 3A to 9V 2A.
It’s not useless I have to stop playing games on my phone because of thermal throttling. One time I had a game running in the background and it was heating my pocket
@@spookyseafood7682 then get an iPhone XR. its cheap, runs any game and doesn't thermal throttle even if you play demanding games + record gameplay footage and are in a discord call
Back when I had a motorola milestone in middle school I tried compiling a linux kernel on it ('cause my parents didn't want me playing computer. didn't know how it worked, but there's good tutorials). Had to put it in outside below zero to not have it shut off from thermal protection! Also overclocked a lot with weird graphic hacks to run some nvidia tegra games. Good time.
What this tells me is that the Red Magic is seriously on to something for a gaming phone OR one you need to use for multimedia output playback for presentations, or 4k, OR if you need to show 3D models like CAD work on it. I'd like to see even better venting and better cooling on more performance phones in the future.

Just throwing out there that if you ever think you need a new compensator, or just want to change someone life100% towards hsi dreams. I'd take it and put it to work on my series.
I think it would have been nice to see you if you could find a way to just turn off the fan in the Red Magic 3 with some root software. And then you could benchmark it against itself with the fan on.
Just for funzies it would be cool to know how much of the TECs cooling ability is in the TEC itself and how much of it was just the fan dissipating heat. You know kill the TEC and just power the fan with same voltage and current, however that would work out.
From the results I think Red Magic seems to tune the SoC thermal protection a bit riskier, it can perform better than the S10+ from the beginning by clocking the chip faster, which in turn makes the device hotter. After several tests it becomes even hotter but still having the same performance, so the fan might actually work, but the thermal protection limit IS definitely on the higher side.

I dunno why this thought came into me head, but I'd love to you guys make a render farm from smart phones.
I'm kinda surprised you guys haven't tried overclocking smartphones... I've had my Xperia XA1 Ultra and my XZ2 both overclocked. It can make quite a difference.

@@temanbradley8505 Install a custom kernel with overclocking support. Then use a root app to choose available frequencies.
Although, if your phone is throttling anyway, it won't help sustained loads. It would help only if the device can cool down between bursts above stock.

My S4 runs at 1890mhz stock, with a custom 8.1 oreo rom and sides kernel, I've been able to overclock it to 2136mhz. The only downside with that is obviously, temperature control and thermal throttling... Since I don't care about the phone, I disabled thermal throttling - now it won't throttle but now it'll burn your fingertips off when playing games, I've seen temps as high as 96-110c with throttling turned off.
I used a frezer element few years ago in my old LG G2. That worked very well.

Funny that the Red Magic 3 was in my Gmail ads right above the notification email for this video.

I held it in place using the case and clever rubber band technique without covering screen.

getting good temperatures with peletier is only really viable for devices that have a low power output in the first place.
I'm curious what the red magic 3 will look like after 3 months of use with dust bunnies from my pocket going in and out of the vents for the fan.
@@yubinator7455 I think they were 4903 or something

What this tells me is that the Red Magic is seriously on to something for a gaming phone OR one you need to use for multimedia output playback for presentations, or 4k, OR if you need to show 3D models like CAD work on it. I'd like to see even better venting and better cooling on more performance phones in the future.
Well uhhh, you were pretty damm accurate tbh

I think it would have been nice to see you if you could find a way to just turn off the fan in the Red Magic 3 with some root software. And then you could benchmark it against itself with the fan on.
Or some tape over exhaust?
Just for funzies it would be cool to know how much of the TECs cooling ability is in the TEC itself and how much of it was just the fan dissipating heat. You know kill the TEC and just power the fan with same voltage and current, however that would work out.
The basic TEC unit draw upto 2-3amps at 12v/30w of power, not recommended to use with phone OTG power.
ive been trying to put my thumb on it for a while now but Linus' voice reminds me of Bob the tomato
I bet you were expecting this comment to blow up when you posted it. I'm disappointed it didn't because you're right.
44 degrees! Apparently he’s never felt the back of an iPhone 6s after gaming for a few hours😂😂
4:00 you could also just tape the vent holes...
