  • This was me on ITV yesterday on GMB debating Bobby Seagull on whether all teachers should have to have a GCSE in maths EVEN if the teachers teaching a subject that involves no maths. I say it's an arbritary and needless requirement for those teaching subjects containing no maths, and does nothing to help solve the teacher recruitment problem. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
Shout out to Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh for having us on as well as GMB 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I grew up watching Richard Madeley, so was an amazing moment to have him backing my side!

I hope you continually appear on television. I know you may not get a lot of comments per video or song, but I admire your perspective on education and how the medium by which it is delivered can affect the ability of a student to ascertain the information (i.e your rap songs helping students learn)

Do I think having the maths GCSE grade 5 is the most important prerequisite for teaching?
No, but i do think all teachers should have GCSE English and Maths to a base standard. You have to be able to spot grammatical mistakes in pupils verbal and written communication of their knowledge and understanding. Likewise, a teacher should be able to correct a pupil on a simple times table, or help a pupil in their form with low level maths work like with applying the correct order of operations.
But most important is subject knowledge in the discipline combined with a passion for others to see why that subject is your subject. This is best evidenced with a degree and interview lesson (willing to hear alternative processes for job applications if you have any?)
A question to consider is how many of these well qualified subject specialist enthusiasts dont teach because of the gcse in english and/or maths?

I am an Eastender, having attended the same "sixth form" as Bobby Seagull used to. What both of us love about our institution is the passion and determination to give the best teaching and for students to get stuck in to subjects. We need qualified teachers precisely so we can enjoy it

There's accountability too - Why would a pupil who's already not a fan of maths bother to put the effort in if Mr Bloggs doesn't even have a maths GCSE? If it's the bare minimum you expect the pupils to get then you should damn well expect the teachers to have met that minimum.

I believe you need maths GCSE to be a teacher as in every subject I was able to make a reason why you need the qualification.

The only was to get more people into teaching is to pay them a decent wage that rhey deserve. Criminally underpaid. 90% of Children today are vile.

Exactly. The only reason they want to hire innumerate teachers is so they can't calculate how poor their wages are. Good pay will attract good teachers.

@@Chris-im3ys some of my close friends are teachers. All of them are looking for ways out. Parents run the schools, kids are terribly behaved, pay isn't what it needs to be.

The other guys point is so bad. I've been taught by teachers with degrees and PHDs that have struggled to teach me things. It's not your qualifications that make you a good teacher... especially if those qualifications aren't related to what you're teaching
