Sorry to piss on all your your fireworks, but Green is nowhere near a 'genius'. Unlike Aretha Franklin. Give me me the Scratty Politti of 78-80 any day. At least that was genuinely original music, unlike this Fairlight- dated mush, for the over 40s retro club brigade. Batley Variety Club, anyone? Anyone care to define 'genius', btw? I doubt if Groan meets the job description, to be frank. Moderately talented at best, a post-punk Peter Docherty. His best shot was "28/8/78" on the first St. Pancras EP, a genuine precursor for Keith Levine's guitar innovations of the time (which Green was incredibly snotty about). Not this 'post modernist' pap, however subversive this clever-dick claimed it was. Inverted commas on everything, bollocks to that. This nonsense ruined post-punk, and Green had a lot to do with that, the pretentious twat. The comments below baffle me. And, yes. I'm sure that you all think I'm a Scritti moron, despite my having bought the first EP in October 1978, and having followed them closely ever since. Standards are falling, if this is considered 'genius'
Trevor Barre Interesting opinion. However, me and Miles Davis hold an alternative one. Miles did an almost exact (but inferior) version of Perfect Way. And then there's Arif Mardin, Aretha's producer, who thought they were so great that he produced Cupid & Psyche 85. Maybe these guys know more than you and i. i won't bore you with the things i don't like. As i don't take the alcohol drug, i don't have that habituated negativity thing going on. i don't think that my dislike of something, trumps someone else's liking for that thing. And even though i almost definitely know infinitely more about music than you, i still don't consider my opinion in any way superior. You like what you like and that's completely equal to my opinion. As i say to everyone who comes into my studio, there's no right or wrong with music (and comedy) there's only what you like, and what you don't. i've written hundreds of songs . . . "There's nothing i wouldn't take Even intravenous There's nothing i wouldn't do My heart depends on me now sugar Each time I go to bed I pray like Aretha Franklin Each time I go to bed I pray like Aretha Franklin" . . .that's greatness right there and it's revolutionary. At this moment, for me, Seven Lions is Beethoven. Seven Lions is one of the greatest composers i've ever heard, and that includes Mahler and Beethoven. If you don't know his stuff, start with, Days to Come and then go on to, Seven Lions All Songs Mix. This is a great heavy metal drummer, who went on to become the best DJ and programer on the planet. He has moved on song writing as much as did Dylan. Heavenly! Best,
Cheers, Tazzo. I bought the "Early Scritti" thing a few days ago, that's the only reason I posted. Haven't listened to that stuff for years, but it reminds me of a golden period of English music. I find the 80s+ stuff difficult to listen to now, as it sounds so dated what twith the Fairlights et al, and his voice starts to remind me of molasses syrup. We can agree to disagree, like true gentlemen.l
Trevor Barre Thank you Trevor for your delightful reply. It's so enjoyable to come upon real intelligence. Thank you. i too loved the early Scritti stuff, but when the Americans became involved the whole thing (just for me) scaled up to magnificent. Scritti did, what Nirvana also did, they thew into the air, simple (mostly primary) chords that somehow landed in a completely unique fashion. To be fair (light) to you, i got off the ride with Provision, which didn't do it for me to nearly the same degree. It was like Prince's Diamonds and Pearls album, just too much chrome and chocolate box (although i'm a huge Prince fan). i would be fascinated to hear your opinion of Seven Lions (and the Queens of the Stone Age, for that matter). Sorry if i came off a bit tetchy in my last epistle, but i'm sure you get a little protective over music you love (and i know you to be a true lover of music). i heard a story of a musician coming out of the debue performance of Beethoven's 9th symphony. He sees a music critique, so he asked him what he thought of the concert. The critique said he thought it was "quite good", so the musician stabbed him :-) Now i'm not condoning stabbing, i'm just saying i understand a love of music making someone that passionate. What are you presently listening to my friend? Tell me something good (Rufus). Best,
What I really loved about Green was partially his very original and distinctive vocals (before they were processed out of existence), but mainly his early guitarwork, a style that disinguished post-punk in the 78-81 period (Keith Levine being the greatest exponent, in my humble). I think he was self-taught as well. A shame he seems to have not developed this aspect of his playing.
I loved this group and they still sound just as good today what a great original voice he has and bloody great songs as well would love it if they toured near Cardiff or swansea would defo go and see them
Wow this brought a tear to my eye, I never knew he was this good live, I loved him as a child, and this song has a special place in my heart, when I was emigrating to the US in July 86 from the UK this song was played on the PAN AM 747 I flew on, it was on th pop channel through the headphones, so whenever I think about that day nearly 40 years ago this song always pops into my mind.
Hell yes... I had no idea this guy was so good live and he has gotten older as the rest of us, but his voice says not. Just as good now as back then... My hat is off to you Sir...
Of all the 80's acts, and obviously they were ahead of their time, Green leads the pack as far as being able to still have the same voice 30 years later. And to sound so good live is unbelievable. Impressive vocally and technically. Could rerelease it today and be a hit...
I was about 15 when I hear that wonderful album C&P85, I still play it to my kids, and they love it. they will surely play it to their kids, this music is for every generations.
Amazing song!!!!! I love the 80's born in 84 i missed out but i love everything bout that decade and i only found this song a few months ago and i love it totally sums the 80's up, and to hear how good he is love is a credit to this guy, Fu**ing brilliant, shame we have rubbish music these days!!!! Great song, great video thanks for putting it on!!!
He was in his 50’s then and his amazing voice is still the same now - Green Gartside as a performer was a tonic to the Macho 80’s with such a distinctive tone and brave at that time to showcase that - an actual original but we were so lucky back in the ‘80s!
To be able to perform this song that well on stage this many years after the original release of the album. All I can say is I am more impressed than the day it was released to know that the man felt the music that passionately. Excellent Job on a song that I thought could only be well executed in the studio.
Fantastic! My favourite 80's album and here he is doing it as well as ever. This album dropped just as I got into commercial music production and instantly became my gold standard alongside Trevor Horn's productions. I used to play this into the early morning on the studio's JBL 4350's. Got noise complaints from 3 miles away if I left the fire escape open on warm nights!
totally brilliant !! glad to see they still going strong after all thee years... they hold a very special place in my heart do the ow`d Scritti ... they were the main part of my musical adolescence .. and i love that DX7 sound !! :-) peace ya`ll
Green Gartside pulls it off!!! This just shows that the guy has perfect pitch, perfect intonation and all of his singing is done without the help (the help?) of patching his vocals through "pitch-correction algorithms" from the very latest and greatest piece of pitch correction software. It just goes to show everyone - this guy can really sing. Scritti Politti are the most underrated band in pop history! Their 1980's output was fantastic.
When I first heard this guy sing, I thought his voice was put through a computer to make it sound high pitch, but actually to hear Green Gartside sing live, he probably has the most unique white male tenor vocals in the history of modern pop/rock music. Closer to him is Squeeze’s lead singer Glenn Tilbrook who turns 64 at the end of this month(August 2021). He(Gartside) still pulls it off without dropping an octave even now at the age of 66.
I remember seeing Green on TOTP and though I was soooo young and obvs didn't know it then I totally fell in love.. I think it was his dangley earrings lol. Still ❤ him to this day.
Great version of what is a master class in Production in the original version! Couldn't believe when I realised his voice is actually just like on the record.
Of all the live old 80s group Green nails it everytime. He doesn't needlessy mess around with the acoustics and arrangements and sings just like the radio edits. Perfection.
I had tickets for this gig... and then couldn't attend :-( Ended up giving them away to a random fan who could. Finally in 2020 - we had Scritti programmed to play the venue where I work... still hoping it might happen in 2021
What a fantastic night! Green was a hoot, the band played a tight and brilliant set and (thanks to ANDY HOUSTON) I finally managed to get Greens moniker on a laminated poster!! Thanks Andy for a nostalgic and informative chat and thank you to all the band for a completely satisfying set. Next time i will get you a guiness Green! Also, cheers to such a friendly bunch of fellow Scritti admirers who were obviously as into it as i was. The enthusiastic ginger bloke in the front row XXX
Each time I got to bed, I ll pray like Aretha Franklin! Wotz a "WOOD BEE"? Still I love Scritti Politti! I used to live near Leeds, now I live near NEWCASTLE!!!!!!!!
Really impressive. I wish I could have seen them & Prefab Sprout live, but they never came near my neck of the woods. Green is a sublimely talented chap - great musician, singer/songwriter, exceptionally intelligent & eloquent, fine artist (as in drawing/painting/sculpting), polyglot - geez, is there anything this guy can’t do.
Still a Banging tune in 2023 and beyond.
Wow! His voice hasnt diminished in all these years. Still pure, sweet, in tune, melodic, angelic, untouched by tech manipulation. ❤❤❤❤
Oh my he just fantastic 😍
Unbelievable voice for a live performance, astounding!
Damn he still nails it!
I can't believe how good his voice is live. he sounds exactly like the original record. And a fantastic guitarist as well.
So true💕
Yeah, he has such a bright voice! It stands out!
But also over the years his voice hasn't changed (much).
Brilliant sound as good as the 1st time I heard it back in the 80s 👍 😀 ❤️😍
Green, was and still is a genius, He and the band was what the 80s was all about. Greatness. Love them
He looks and sounds great.
Astounding! How does he still sing like this???!
pawdaw I am amazed.
Still amazing voice!
I met him in Boston at the Rock Club on Tremont Ave. So cool .we were standing in the club hallway together singing Word Girl
Scritti ça claque toujours autant ! 🤩😍
Same as it was back in 1984!!! I mean, they're playing live and... it's just like the original song...
This man is a god among mortals! Some one called him the Mozart of modern music and i couldn't agree more. Genius!

Loved it. Exactly as original
I am still completely in love with him.

That voice! Wow still amazing after all this years!
my god he still sounds awesome, even at his age!
Easily one of the best songs ever. We should try to get this song re-released and make it No.1 for Xmas. Simply brilliant.
Still sounds great today just a pure classic that sounds timeless
Wow! The voice is still on point after all these years.
I was about 15 when I hear that wonderful album C&P85, I still play it to my kids, and they love it. they will surely play it to their kids, this music is for every generations.

I saw an old interview on UA-cam with Green and he says: I’m not a singer 😮…. His voice is still so solid. He really IS a singer 😍😍😍😍😍
He was in his 50’s then and his amazing voice is still the same now - Green Gartside as a performer was a tonic to the Macho 80’s with such a distinctive tone and brave at that time to showcase that - an actual original but we were so lucky back in the ‘80s!
I absolutely love this!!! GG your amazing live💚
I love Green Gartside and Scritti Politti my favourite band I have all there albums on vinyl xx
First time I've ever seen this live. Brilliant and seamless!
this has made my life again hearing it

Loved this song back in good old 80s still listen to it on my iTunes playlist brilliant👌

Green Still sounds same as he did in the 80's
I'm 31. I played my vinyl copy of Cupid & Psyche 85 last night while me and my wife decorated our babies room. Good times.
Green sings almost like he used to do way back then. I absolutely love this song. Glad I was there to experience it the first time around ;)
Absolutely reeks of the 80s. Sounds fantastic properly live - as good a song now as it was back in 85...
Just discovered these this year on Spotify - would definitely see them live!
OMG I love you guys. I went to Lakenheath American High School and I used to listen to you all the time on tape....... I still love you. LOTS
Still sounds great after all these years. Superb.
Green Gartside is a legend! And looking good! :D
I need Scritti Politti to visit Australia ASAP. Amazing performance
Scritti - one of the top 10 bands of the 80's!
totally brilliant !! glad to see they still going strong after all thee years... they hold a very special place in my heart do the ow`d Scritti ... they were the main part of my musical adolescence .. and i love that DX7 sound !! :-) peace ya`ll

just too fantastic. great singer. what a band. way ahead of their time in many ways
What a voice thank you for sharing clearspot.
wow! Green sounds impeccable!!!
Great version of what is a master class in Production in the original version! Couldn't believe when I realised his voice is actually just like on the record.
I am surprised how good Green plays guitar and sings live, still a groovy song!
Of all the live old 80s group Green nails it everytime. He doesn't needlessy mess around with the acoustics and arrangements and sings just like the radio edits. Perfection.
Best band 4 - ever..... I remeber my first LP by Scritti........Always in my heart!
He sounds the same on record and live. TALENT!
Awesome Eighties.
Even more relevant now in 2020.
I had tickets for this gig... and then couldn't attend :-(
Ended up giving them away to a random fan who could.
Finally in 2020 - we had Scritti programmed to play the venue where I work... still hoping it might happen in 2021
Wow. What a class act to pull that off live with such quality. This probably needs a re-release.
Green has one of the best ears in the UK, besides great taste and harmonic sense. Not a single note out of tune, remarkable!
Hmm "Not a single note out of tune"? I can hear a lot of out of tune notes but this live performance is really a good one..
@@danielcederborg4033 He's pretty spot on...as much as humanly possible I'd say. Any more and it would be autotune-tastic!
@@davidsanderson5918 Mick Hucknall is the best live in my opinion
Not easy song 2 do live.. 💯🆗
Very nice👊
Pray up and may God bless us all.
Wish I could've been there, but Leeds is a long way from Texas...
+Phil Prof In oh so many ways . . .
Only a 10 hour flight away. I live near to Leeds but didn't go to this concert. I wish I had.
This is so good. I need to see more of this live!
Truelly stunning after all these years.
What a fantastic night!

Great pop song and to hear it live makes it even better.
Each time I got to bed,

thé eighties were amazing décade and totally in advance on theire time. ..was my favorite band
Really impressive. I wish I could have seen them & Prefab Sprout live, but they never came near my neck of the woods.
