The Advantages of Direct Thread Suppressors

  • In this video we're going over the three main reasons to consider using a direct thread suppressor system. If you don't need the convenience of a fast attach mount interface, using a direct thread adapter makes the whole package shorter, lighter, and simplifies tuning the gun.
    You don't have to do it but you might wanna.

As for me, I take ALL these so called UA-camrs channels as what they truly are Entertainment, howbeit not very good for the most part. Being older has some very good points it's a lot easier to spot them right off without falling pray to the Entertainment. It's called Bank Roll and Cash Cow for them when people fall for it.

    Years before owning a silencer, the biggest issue I watched people have is having to constantly check and tighten their direct thread silencer. I use a direct thread on my hunting rifle since it'd only be 1-2 shots, but I'm still going to put a qd on it. All my other rifles have a qd/brake. You simply get a superior connection between the rifle and silencer. To me the other pluses are moot points in comparison. Excellent video as always though Hop.

    • @hkfifty871
      @hkfifty871 2 місяці тому

      For me it was partly cost (I don’t have much desire to buy additional muzzle devices for each different firearm I may want to suppress), partly a reluctance to be locked in to one specific muzzle device without knowing what I’ll think of it if/when I decide to shoot unsuppressed, and partly the worry that years down the road the suppressor industry will start chasing some other “latest and greatest” attachment method rendering mine obsolete and impossible to find replacements for.
      Direct thread ain’t fancy, but it’s cheap, it works, and it will basically always be an option for whatever firearm I may want to put my can on, and that makes it a winner for me.

    Good food for thought.
    For me, blast baffle erosion on my 10.3 is somewhat of a concern, having a brake to act as a sacrificial baffle is appealing, despite the added weight. Yes form 4s are clearing in days now but replacing a suppressor is still a not insignificant extra expense.
    As for transport, I don't care about making the gun super compact, I care about a hot can melting the foam in my case, being able to use a hi-temp suppressor pouch to remove and store the can after a range trip is very nice.

      There are muzzle devices for 13.7” barrels that have a shank prior to the actual silencer attachment that both get you to 16” length AND don’t take up room in the can.

    • @SauerkrautIsGood
      @SauerkrautIsGood 2 місяці тому +3

      @ToastbackWhale That's even more stupid. That extended shank could have just been more barrel, and you'd have more velocity for the same OAL.

    I tried to explain this to a friend of mine who is recently in to guns and just got his first can(s). He works as an engineer for a car manufacturer and broke it down like this after trying and realizing that bigger isn’t always better. Weight on the end of the barrel is the same thing as unspiring mass on on your car. Oz’s = LBS.

  • @letsgobrandon416
    @letsgobrandon416 27 днів тому

    Speaking for myself, I like the QD options for several reasons. Direct threaded suppressors can and do come loose, always at the worst possible time. Baffle and endcaps strikes you see on the forums are almost entirely do to the can coming loose under fire, direct thread or not.
    The modern tapered adapters just don't do this (Plan B/Atlas, Huxwrx, CAT Spooky, Griffin EZ-lok, etc) because tapers induce a significant amount of friction into the system and increase their lockup under thermal stress. And that means it takes a lot less torque to keep them in place, and that matters for reducing your rifles dispersion pattern.
    In terms of POI shift, I've not seen this with tapered adapters. If it's happening, the shift is at least one order of magnitude smaller than the dispersion of the rifle, and thus is irrelevant. I take suppressors off the guns every time I pack up at the range and put them back on when I get to the range as it makes transport a lot easier. I've never had an issue AFTER switching everything to tapered QD. I did suffer POI shift with loose cans and had a few close calls with direct thread.
    I won't endorse a specific tapered adapter, as I think that's largely irrelevant and up to personal preference. What matters is that the taper is before the threads to prevent carbon locking and you tighten it by hand like you mean it when you put it on. If it doesn't take a wrench to get it off, man up and tighten it better next time. Even if I plan on leaving a suppressor dedicated to a rifle, I would still use a QD mount so that I would be absolutely sure it wouldn't walk off.
    Yes I am aware that if you tighten the hell out of a direct thread you can largely prevent walk off, but we are talking upwards of 30-40ft-lb of torque to do that, and THAT much torque applied to the muzzle of the barrrel leaves the barrel in a stressed state. It won't hurt anything, you aren't strong enough to break a barrel this way, but it's well documented to cause the dispersion of the rifle to open up significantly because the stored stress within the barrel causes harmonic oddities when fired.
    This also would necessitate not torquing the hell out of your muzzle device to keep it on, use Hot Lock or Rocksett or something, and apply minimal torque to snug it on in order to maintain accuracy.
    So all of that is to say, QD > DT unless you really need the weight savings, and even then it's dubious because with the tiny muzzle device options and titanium adapters these days, you really aren't saving any weight anymore compared with the direct thread adapter your can came with.

    The funniest thing about this is Hop got me thinking “I really need a quick detach system for rifles X and Y to use can Z.” Up to now I’ve been using direct thread only, partly because of potential tolerance stacking and partly because of weight/length/cost concerns. I don’t need fast swap capability; however, with a .30 caliber can there’s a good argument for some form of muzzle device on each of those rifles when they *don’t* have the can attached. And “NO” I am not buying a dedicated can for every freedom dispenser no matter how short the wait time is today.

  • @newerest1

    Direct thread with wrench flats is by far the best budget mounting system.
    The wrench flats allow you to torque it to a point where the idea of it walking loose, even on a belt fed machine, is literally a joke.
    That same crushing torque ability also will give you the most consistent POI/POA shift in the game.

    I can see how direct thread would have it's benefits, but ive always seen and had issues with them walking off.
    You can have a 1/2x28 or 5/8x24 nut machined to lock your direct thread can in place better. thread the nut all the way onto the barrel, thread your suppressor on over it and then back the nut up so that it tightens against the suppressor.

I distinctly recall being very happy with how it sounded on my 11.5 with an Odin Works adjustable gas block. Noticeably quieter to the shooter than my buddies YHM Resonator K and they are similar in dimensions overall. That is a .30 cal can but…from that moment I actually was a big fan of direct thread. Our guns were very similarly configured but mine was quieter and less expensive. Since then I also grabbed a resonator K that moves between my 6 arc and 6 creed, and it’s nice…but my DeadAir Wolfman stays as a direct thread item on my GHM-9 because it is also noticeably quieter and lighter, even in K configuration, then it is with a KeyMo adapter.
