In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is teaching to you the golden middlegame rules that every chess player needs to know.
Summary:
The first principle in the middlegame: You need a plan, so you have to find the general direction of play which usually means you have to ask two major questions: Where to play and what to do? The factors that helps you to answer these questions are:
- „The King position“: In the example it was a opposite side castling position. One of the typical plans is to attack your opponent’s king, typically with the help of your pieces and pawns. The attack with the pieces works well if your opponent has already some vulnerabilities in the position but in the concrete position of the example both sides had no weaknesses, so the pawn attack will be much more efficient. Push them forward in order to open up files, diagonals and critical squares for the pieces.
- The other way to come up with a plan is to analyze the pawn structure. You can think about pawn minorities and majorities e.g. pawn majority on the kingside. If you have a pawn majority on one side, the idea is to push these pawns on the side where you have the majority.
- Another great factor is the bishop pair. The bishop pair can be very beneficial in open positions.
Another principle: Material. The material in the middlegame stage should be evaluated only in connection with the activity of pieces. You don’t have to evaluate the material itself. Only compare the material in respect to the activity of the pieces. Sometimes you can sacrifice some pawns just to activate all your pieces and the piece activity will just define the great advantage.
Knowing these principles will help you to master the middlegame stage.

Will you offer a section on your website dedicated to game analyses? Like where you regularly post analyses of old and new games?
Sometimes I find them more instructive than just to do bare tactics.
The 2 main questions “where to play? and what to do?” I been asking that from the jump lol
What rating range is the "Improver Level" aimed at?
11:20 What if black plays Nh5 with threatening the queen? Is g3 really safe for the queen to go and to free the d3 square for the bishop?
Queen just moves back to f2 and then the knight is terribly placed and can be attacked with g4. You need to learn that attacking a queen isn’t necessarily good, unless you can concretely win a piece or improve your position
@@justinstevens1523 LOL. No. Nxg7 - Knights can move backwards, remember?! 🙄
❤️🤘
Very good, but kind of everything in one pack. Imho a bit overloaded
16:41 Now, it F*cking to F8 then d takes e7.
WTF!!

Middlegame is when everyone starts winning/losing. You can tell who will win by analyzing the pieces.
It's so unfortunate that it takes a while to visually see several moves ahead, and it's not just one pattern.
LMAO...How many of you had to rewind @16:41? And now E F..cking goes to F8...lolol
