- Cigar Box Guitars - The Pickup Experiment.
I play 6 different cigar box guitars with 5 different pickups. Same Strings, same tuning, same amp, same amp settings and the same tune. Hear the unique sounds and tones of each pickup at the same level.

Its hard for me to make up my mind which one I like best, hummmmm. I think ALL of them lol
they all sound really good, a lot of people hate on piezos but i like them.
@@zipzip8239 I like them too. They have a nice raw, old school sound, as long as you don't turn them up too much :)
@@SouthernFireGuitars yea thats when they get nasty and not in a good way lol
I would like to see the tab sheet of what you are playing!
@@ksbabcock1944 I'll try and put one together
The P90 was my favourite. It felt warm and earthy.
Thanks Rodney. I like those P90's too. M~
They all sounded great but I liked the down home acoustic sound of the piezo pickup - kinda put me in mind of the front porch, old rocking chair an a jug of shine : )
Thanks Ken. Jug of shine lol
Playing this three string thing is turnin me into a good ole boy I reckon! Love your vids man keep em comin ! : )@@SouthernFireGuitars
Same stool, same hat, same shirt, very important! 😂😂😂👍🏻
Thanks, I think so. You have to be comfortable lol M~
They all sound great, can’t make up my mind.
Loved that test tune you played
Thank you. very much. M~
Great builds Michael, love your barb wire branding too.
Thank you, David. M~
Nice clean builds and great sound out of all of them. Thanks
Thanks Fly n J. :)
The harmonic scale rocks for cigar box instraments.
Thanks Geno. M~
Hi Michael, if you couldn't make it as a builder, you sure could as a comedian, love your humor, oh bye the by, nice builds!
Than you, fokker, I appreciate that :) M~
Thanks for the knowledge that you share.
Your welcome. Geno, Thanks for checking out the videos. M~
Good video Michael, thanks for sharing. I think I liked the Single Coil sound the best, but they all sounded good. Thanks again.
Thanks Stewart, for the input. :)
This is very informative. Now I know I'll need another one day. Hang in there Michael. I am waiting for Christmas 🎄
Thank you, John. M~
Thanks for the comparison! I think my favorite was the hot rail pickup. The P-90 also sounded great! Nice T-shirt paisano!
Thanks Steve, its hard for me to pick lol Got the t shirt here www.inkpixi.com/
This iStock a great way to have people really make.good choices pal. Big thank for all you do,your a great teacher.
Sorry for type0,s
This is such a great tool to hear the differences in pick up choices.THANKS MUSH.
Thank you kindly! Freddy. M~
Your welcome, Freddy. Thanks for checking them out. M~
I liked the 4 string the best. Very clear tone yet mellow. A nice defined tone!
Thanks Sting. M~
They all sound great. It would be interesting to hear the different guitars made from the same box with different pickups.......
Thanks a bunch, That might be a future video lol M~
Michael - great video! Yep, pick the sound you want and you got your pickup. Well, I might put 2 on my builds - hot rail and piezo.
Thanks Joe. Hot rail and a piezo would make a good combination, I believe. M~
They all sound great but my favorite is #2 with the Humbucker.
Thanks a bunch. I like those humbuckers too. M~
I like the P90 and the humbucker. I think they would win big over the others at really loud volume levels. All of them sound good and I appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate the differences. I'll be building my first one soon and this video has convinced me to put a P90 in my #1. Thank you.
Thanks amwood, Good luck with your first build. M~
Another excellent and entertaining video from Southern Fire! They all sound great, and I was surprised how well the Piezo pickup CBG's kept up with all the coil pickup guitars. I especially liked the sound of the Brick House. Can you share a link to the Piezo you used, as well as the volume control? Excellent video!!!
Thank you, David. Yeah, that Brick House is a nice sounding box. I use these 27mm piezo pickups amzn.to/3uaVwsH Volume pots amzn.to/3u6u4wf
I liked the one with the P90, and the blue guitar the best. But, they all sounded good.
Thank you, Jon. 😎🎸
Hey Michael. #1 and 6 with the piezo sounded old school. Love it. For a smooth and rich tone the P90 was nice. My favorites from a great collection (is that the collective noun?) of CBGs.
Thanks, Mike. I do like that old school sound, for sure. M~
Just when I think I know which one sounds the best, I'm back to square one. They all sound good to me! First here by the way.
Hey Jack, its good to be first :) Thanks. I'm with you, they all sound good to me. M~
Personally lean toward the P90. Also like the piezo for the old school sound.
Thank you, Woollard. I like that old school sound too. M~
They all sound Great and look Great too!
Thanks Gary M~
❤ them all...the piezos right up with the p90s. ...great job.....hope when I attempt to build one that they are half as good sounding as yours does...WOW 😮😮😮😮😮
Thanks James. If you want to build a CBG that sounds as good as mine, check out my Pro Builders WorkShop at www.southernfireguitars.com/
Will do it Mike.......
Great tone in all of them! My favorite i..... NO SERVICE
Thank you, Christopher. My favorite was the same as yours lol
me, between the humbucker and the P90, yes Shella, there is a difference. Thanks for your time..
Oh Michael, that is a very difficult question because I like them all. There are smal differences regarding the characteristics of the picks. But I guess the single coil was surprising me a little. Maybe only because I build with piezos and mostly with humbuckers in my CBG's.
Thanks Klaus, I think they all sounded great, but I might be a little bias lol Nice sound on that single coil, for sure. M~
Love it man
Thank you, Rob. I appreciate that. M~
This was great. The humbucker was my favourite. I really like your little tune too. I've been trying to learn it but I keep getting confused by the picking. Do you reckon you could do a lesson on it?
Thanks Scott. The humbuckers do have a nice sound. I will work on a picking lesson and post it up soon. Thanks M~
I think this was a great method Mike
Thank you, Freddy. M~
They all sound very good. I think I am leaning to the P90. I like that one.
Thanks Lonnie, yes, that P-90 does sound good. M~
Very informative. I can’t pick a favorite.
Thank you, Bradley. I'm with you, its hard to pick. M~
P90, the hot rail, and the humbucker in that order. I really love your builds Michael. The cool brand and the nice woods and finishes. That tune has huge potential for a good song. Do you record at home?
Thanks my friend, I appreciate that. Yes, I do record at home. M~
Great tonal variety with those various pick ups...............Have you ever tried dual humbuckers wired as per a traditional Les Paul ??
Thanks Mallers, I have not tried that YET, but I bet it sounds great. M~
As always good job 👌
Number 3!
Thanks Doodles. M~
Good choice. :)
I really like the sound of all of them, but the Padron with. The ham Bakker sounds good
All sound great. But the Hot Rail... That one was real nice.
Thank you Tbonz, I like the box too with that Hot Rail, looks cool. M~
They all sounds great by the way but I'm really liking the p90
Thanks Rod, the P90 is one of my fav sounding pickups. M~
The piezo's & the P-90.
Thank you, Kim. M~
P90/HB both great
My favorite is Hey 😅 I like the P 90 the best but they all have their own flavor, which is delicious 😋👍🙏
Thanks Pedro, That P-90 does sound pretty darn good :)
Hello Again Michael, Well, This is a tough one & they all sound Great. On Looks, I Thought the, PUNCH, BRICKHOUSE & HUPMANN, & on sound, It was very , very difficult to choose but I came to the decision that the 4 STRING & the HUPMANN did have a slight edge on the others but I wouldn't gamble on it because the 6 of them sounded Great, Thank you Michael & God Bless.
Thank you, Peter, I know what you mean, its hard to pick a favorite, I like them ALL. lol M~
Ha ha, love how you “untimely” got cut off when you started to share the one(s) you liked the most!
I like the different sounds from the variety of types, but would say my favorites are the hot rail, P90 and Humbucker 😁 Great builds as usual, Michael!
Thanks Terry, Yeah, did you see what I did there lol Thanks for the feed back M~
I agree with your choice
Looking at the guitars with the different pickups, boxes and neck lengths they each have their own sound, like them all
Thank you, Wayne. I like that every guitar has its own unique sound, that's very cool. M~
They are all nice, but for me hard to pick between the Humbucker and the P-90.
Thanks Mike. I know what you mean. I like them both. M~
Gotta luv the P90, yup, that's the one 🤘
Thanks Gibfen, Yeah, that P-90 sounds great. M~
All sound good, though perhaps the Soap Bar was best at those setting. However I thing there would be a much bigger spread if you added some gain.
Thanks Cracker J, I do like that P-90. I agree. M~
I tip my hat to you. You can get those piezo sounding good, makes me jealous.
Thank you, Bob, Them piezos aren't too bad as long as you don't turn them up too loud lol
I liked the last one best but they all sound great
Thanks Paul. M~
You play well aswell..
@@oioioioi100 Thanks Paul, M~
Michael u make some great looking gitty’s....
Thanks doggylv. M~
The piezo pickups are #1.
I only heard a slight difference in the flat mount pick up
Thanks Freddy
Any chance of one of your great tutorials on playing the tune you have used in this Michael?
Hi Rod, I've done video lessons on most of the tunes I play in my videos, I'm not sure which one it would be, but here is my lessons play list ua-cam.com/video/0IdDzeZTUPM/v-deo.html
@@SouthernFireGuitars - thanks Michael I’ll check it out 👍
Like the first one and last one best😎
Thanks Doodles. M~
❤ them all, wish I could afford one
Need to do one with a metal top
Thanks Richard. M~
Without studio monitors it is hard to pull out any but minor differences. Then again I am on my phone. I would say the choice would be whatever makes the customer happy 🤣 they are the one that will hear what they perceive to be something they want. Viva LA différence
Thanks Hobby. That's true :) M~
I LIKE THE HUMBUCKER AND P90 BEST, I ALWAYS USE HUMBUCKERS MYSELF BUT MAY TRY A P90. CHEERS ,
LES
Next can you show us how to play that beautiful song?
I believe I have that tune in a lesson video.
Have you used a Peizio out of an old fire alarm, for the pick-up, yet?
Hey Geno. I have not tried that yet. M~
Set to the Petotonic Scale?
Damnit y'all I like em all
Thanks Colin. I'm with you on that one. lol
i still want to hear how those surface mount pick ups sound mounted under the lid.
I will have to try it soon. M~
@@SouthernFireGuitars will be interesting to see. shame it didnt work out on that odd shaped box.
@@zipzip8239 Yeah, that was a bummer.
The P 90 then the rail
Thanks Ice Bob. I am a big P90 fan. M~
Did I mention, that your fans would appreciate pickups or guitar giveaways?
Everybody likes giveaways :)
Like the hot rail
Thanks Terry, I have another one of those Hot Rails, can't wait to use it. M~
Hey brother try a lace pickup matchbox .
Hey Jeff, I may have to do that. M~
Piezo if you’re looking for a dobro sound.
🎶 Well, I can't stand politics, but you've made that cigar box sound good. 🎶
Thank you, Geno. M~
I did like the rail. 👍🇦🇺
Thank you, Guzzo. I need to get a few more of those. M~
Yes p90 I hear difference
Thanks Freddy.
😎
😀
P90 and humbucker had noticeably more bass.
It has to be the P90 then the Brickhouse...
Thanks Jerry, I do like those P90's. M~

Thanks FlyingTex, I think you should try them :)
P90 then Humbucker
Thanks James. I do like those P90's, M~
Humbucker for sure
Thank you bo. M~
Just wanted to say that I have had CBGs made by every big name in the CBG field ( except Justin Johnson, but every other one ) and without any disrespect to others, YOUR guitar sounds better, plays better than any of them. Thanks. Also, I LOVE your pup!! BTW, have you ever thought of selling your music, either downloads or CDs? Finally, for some reason the jackasses at UA-cam decided your videos are bad for kids, so they won't allow us to be notified of your new posts. Dirtbags!!! Anyway, keep up the great work!!
Thanks you, Julian. I really appreciate that. I am working on some music, and hopefully it will be finished soon. I will let you know. M~
Julian, I've watch a lot of CBG channels UA-cam and I agree wholeheartedly. Michael's construction standards and the sound quality is best I've seen.
Thankyou Michael. I look forward to every video
@@shadowminister4090 Thank you, my friend. I appreciate that. M~

The brick house
Thanks Ronald. I like those Brick House boxes too. 😎
P90 everyday!!
Thanks Honey. I do love those P90's
Hi pal. I love your work and style. I wish I had enough money. Due to my disability and medical issues money goes God.
Keep me posted if cost on them around 200 or 250.00
Thanks Freddy. Send me an email at guitarandboots@yahoo.com
Humbucker
Thank you, Freddy

Destressed by steel wool? Cheater.
Steel wool??
I don't like this video , everything is the same 😆
Thanks Colin. You can't please every one, so you might as well please yourself :) I think that's a song. lol
