My biggest issue with this show is that...it does't belong in 2020. It gives me 2000s vibes and reminds me of sex and the city, Devil wears Prada and gossip girl, like, remember when a show and characters existed in some sort of vacuum and had a little to do with real life. It is simply outdated. The main character is "unapologetically herself", she easily gets the job when she has no qualities for it, everything she does turns out great simply because Emily is a main character, duh. She didn't struggle even for a second in this show. Every single man she meets is in love with her or at least wants to have sex with her. Emily is simply not relatable and entertaining anymore like those 2000s characters used to be. Most of the people around her are as stereotypical as it possible. Imagine how much this show could be better if Emily actually tried to learn french, lived in a real chambre de bonne , tried to fit into the new environment, was homesick for one episode at least, wasn't dressed head to toes in chanel cause she can't afford it (you should be pretty rich to afford that amount of chanel). Interesting hearing your perspective as to the reality behind "Emily in Paris". The problem I had was the fact that Emily didn't appear to have done any research at all about social norms in France. This bugged me too! There were a lot of things she did and said that I knew were faux pas and I’ve never been to France or Europe. And the messing the date up for the reservation things made her look dumb, she had been there for a few weeks at that point at least, and she hadn’t picked up on that yet?
thanks for sharing your perspective! i've heard they're cheaper than renting an actual apartment in the city, but at the same time my little studio in the 15th was 1K/month smh!
My sisters and I visited Paris for the first time in December. Only one of my sister had ever been out of the United States so for the rest of us, this was the first overseas trip. I made the mistake of plugging a u.s belkin surge protector, into a European adapter, and then into the outlet and the entire hotel lost power instantly. I walked out so scared but the lady at the desk had no idea it was me and said the neighborhood had been losing power randomly. She didn’t understand when I asked her to flip the fuse box, but she got someone to translate and they got the power back on. Took a few hours thought lol. I learned my lesson fast.
Yeah I found it HILARIOUS Emily was privileged enough to get a king sized chambre de bonne because when I lived in France in outskirts of Paris that would NOT have been possible unless you were super wealthy 😄😄. And yeah why did they select a white girl? In the outskirts there were mostly black people (of different backgrounds and from different countries)
I'm French, I loved the show and I love your video! Just one thing, the chambre de bonne may be "cheap" for Paris, but still very expensive. It's the price of a F1 or F2 outside Paris. Oh, and it's verrrrrrry refreshing to hear a black person refer to themself as an "expat" in France. Love love love !
Back in the olden days (1962) there was a Broadway musical named "No Strings", it starred Diahann Carroll as an American model who moved to Paris. Except for the casting, there's nothing in the play to suggest the American model was Black American. Reportedly, Richard Rogers (who was both composer and lyricist) saw Diahann Carroll on "The Tonight Show" and wanted her to be cast as the female lead. It won a Tony for Best Musical. As far as I know, it's never been made into a movie.
When I studied in France in the late 70s, few French people spoke English or they felt self conscious when they did. It was rare for the French to accommodate an English speaker by switching into English for them. They very much felt that it was your job to improve your French. Back in the 70s, French women in Paris wore stiletto heels walking around the city all the time. As Americans, we found that quite shocking. I think a lot of the things in this show were true in the 70s and not so true now. I know Emily's style is over the top, but it does reflect the difference - in an exaggerated way - of Parisian style versus American style. Back in the 70s, the French were very heavy smokers while my American student counterparts rarely smoked, and those who did picked it up in France.
In Paris I Remember laughing with a friend on the street and a French woman told us to be quiet we were too loud!! 🤣I try to talk about my experiences living in Paris as well but I don’t like that black women are not included in the fairytale narrative. I love your channel! Oh and btw, It’s good luck to step in dog poop with your left foot In France 🇫🇷 😆
We never never in the fairytale narrative. There are movies like pretty woman, etc. but in black movies even a WELL OFF black woman settles for a man that’s not on her level. Smh.
FINALLY! I have been sick of these videos but this one is finally spot on! I've lived in Paris since August 2018, I'm english and minus the electricity experience I agree with everything especially that the french WILL speak in English and apologise for their english which is so good of them! Sadly I did do the spike heels for the first few months as I'm tiny and soon realised it was a massive no no and I ruined my shoes and my feet! Lol at the slideys 😂
So interesting that you've had a similar experience!! Hahah wow girl you are better than me, I think i tried going out in heels once or twice in the city and then realized that everyone else was so much more casual LOL - now its all sneakers and boots for me!
I really enjoyed the show and didn’t take it so seriously as a lot of other people lol. I figured a lot of us could use some fluff right now with all that’s going on.
One of things I loved about the movie was how easy it was to make random connections with people, and I wondered if that was true. I'm originally from the southern part of the US where people are more relaxed. It's not uncommon to initiate random conversations with total strangers, with no other motivation besides to just be friendly. Enjoy a friendly chat, a laugh, and moved on without overthinking or adding meaning to it. I've missed that. So, if that's how it is in Paris, I would love it!
Hi there, really interesting video bravo. Just wanted to add that I am French and from Île de France, and I could relate to some of Emily experiences in the work space. No need to be American for that, if you don’t fit the standard (white, bobo, from an any elitist space) you are an outsider therefore you can have a really hard time. In general living in Paris is hard for everyone even for French people. I left for all those reasons. But I miss home 😭 French culture is also really rich and France has so much nice interesting things to offer, don’t let the negative stops you... Enjoy as much as you can!
It’s the sipping tea at the beginning for me lol I was so excited for this show! Especially since the same writer from sex and the city was one of the writers for this one. I loved your insight and perspective.
Hahaha I was excited for it too!! Was a bit more cutesy than sex in the city for sureee but it was interesting to see their take on Paris. Glad you enjoyed this video!!
I agree completely with you how people switch to your language when they notice your accent without being fluent in your language. You are very kind to laugh about that, that experience usually upsets me. I am a latina living in USA for 20 years and I think I will always have accent and of course I will look as a Latina. So I understand when another Latino speaks Spanish with me if I am buying something ONLY if they speak perfect Spanish but if it's not and they speak broken Spanish I keep speaking in English because come on! I m living here 20 years, studying the language, in all of the forms of being fluent, listening, reading, speaking, writing...and all of a sudden someone I come across to and is able to identify my accent, automatically think his poor Spanish is better than my English. This is something that will always happen, stereotypes, stigmatizing others.
I'm only 2 mins into the video, but YES, when I watched the series I had the same thoughts. It's not often we get to see shows and movies that resonate with us about well-traveled Black women. I was literally thinking how amazing it would be see a movie with a Black woman traveling the world or living in another country. There was this one movie I saw about a Black women and she went on vacation to Paris. I can't remember the name, but I absolutely loved it! And of course, The Last Holiday was cool, but the storyline was so depressing.
Totally agree! We soooo need to change the narrative here. I have so many black friends who are currently living abroad or aspire to in the near future!!
Hey!! Loved the video. I have heard so many negative comments about the show and i thought it was so fun! Im glad you tackled it so lightly and understood that it was just a show. Of course things are going to be exaggerated!! 💕
In my first day in Paris, I caused a power outage in my dorm with a surge protector too 😂 I for some reason thought it would be ok because I had the adapter but I was wrong. It at least got me to practice my French with the dorm building front desk to help restore power.
I got the same feeling watching your videos! I’ve been watching 'Emily in Paris' and love it. Emily moved to Paris looking to expand her career but she is learning so much more about work/life balance and relationships. Her new life in Paris has made her realize that personal fulfillment and happiness should never be sacrificed. Can’t wait to see what she decides in the new episode. I see a connection between your experience and Emily's. 'Tiff in Paris!!" Personally, walking with you on your journey has been relatable, giving me a bird's eye view of what it's like living in Paris as a Black woman. I live in New York and look forward to visiting Paris and the South of France in September with my hubby, so I've been glued to your videos these last couple of days!
wouldnt be surprised if creators of the show watched expats vids on youtube to get ideas! def would like a French perspective video:) just moved here from usa a few days after the show came out and found a bunch of similarities too haha

Also, I loveeee your shirt in this video, would you be willing to share where you got it? Thank you so much for all of these videos!
The problem with the show is how incredibly condescending towards the French people is. Emily is bullied at work because everyone secretly is envious and threatened by her "American innovative ideas"? The show makers said that it is a "love letter to the French culture", but they must write Valentine cards like "On this romantic day, we should both celebrate how luck you are to be with me!". I am sorry, but I haven't met a single French who is envious of Americans or their "ideas". That doesn't mean that they necessarily dislike Americans, it simply means that they are considered one of the rest, nothing special for good or bad.
But that is typical American movies for you. Americans are so incredible US centrics. Besides, they focus so much on race in America - like black/white. While the rest of the world do not identify with such. Here it is more ethnicity. Like black people living in France are either French, French-Nigerians, French-Sudanese and so on. And then you have ethnical French people. Yes, Frencj is both a nationality and an ethnicity.
I’m binge watching and I’m on like video #5 and you’re just so amazing!!! It’s so phenomenal to see another dark skin woman and Howard University alumna living her best life in France! #Goals
I'm Black and French (from Guadeloupe) and it was annoying to see almost only white people in the serie , like, I went only 2 times in Paris but it's so diverse! It's very weird that they erased black and brown people like that.
Hoping to add some diversity soon. I’m a marketing major with an international relations minor. I’ve been studying French for 3 years hoping to go abroad some time next year if I can save enough 🤞🏾🤞🏾
I saw a review by a native Parisian that said she hated that Emily never took the Metro and that they didn’t show how diverse Paris is. As a Hispanic that has never been to Paris, I didn’t really know how diverse France is till personal research.
It is super diverse. I visited a couple of years ago and took the metro with my friend, she lives there and we had fun around the city, I didn’t feel strange or out of place (as a Latina woman) I would love to come back as soon as I have a chance! 😘
I've been dying to watch this video. i literally just finished watching the show today and came straight here to see what you thought about it lol. I was laughing because I could definitely relate with some of the stereotypes as an expat even from Europe.

The oldest building in Paris apparently dates back to 1407 so over 600 years so even though I don't think the building Emily lives in is that old (it looks more like 19th century imo) there are buildings over 500... As for the show.... well I don't wanna rant for pages about what I disliked about it as a French person so here is an opinion I agree with of a black Parisian man living in the US (if you haven't seen it) ua-cam.com/video/cTLIIik_o2k/v-deo.html
I loved Emily in Paris and watched so many critiques of it on UA-cam. Yours was by far the absolute best! Love all your videos!! I think they really did try to steal your life! Lol
I also believe the creator of the show Emily in Paris is watching your videos for ideas and I understand why because you are truly enjoyable to watch and very informative. Keep being you. It’s very unfortunate that France don’t appreciate the other ethnic groups of the country, it’s kind of like they’re keeping them hidden from the rest of the world while they use them for their talents. 🤦♀️
A 500-year old building would be Renaissance style, so either a partially wooden house (most of these have been destroyed over time, often by fire), either some kind of palace. The "oldish" apartment buildings one sees in Paris are Hausmann style (1853-1870). I guess this goes in the same basket as Americans calling Fort Boyard "medieval".
It might be the show writers did some research/surveys of the American experience in Paris. Hence, the many truths/similarities. Good on them for authenticity.
J’aime beaucoup ce vrai ou faux concept...c’est plus positif que de s’attarder sur les gros stéréotypes véhiculés par la série comme le fait les autres....bon coup Tiff ...💗
Would have loved to watch Tiffanie in Paris on Netflix ! Thanks for sharing your experience and also raising the lack of diversity in this show (i.e. the only Black dude being gay in the fashion industry comme par hasard! ). I thought it was great, a little bit too cliché and I found her outfits lacked finesse but she was wearing expensive brands which I cannot afford for now so 👀. Also I found there were a lot of sexual/naked scenes and usually that's more of a French movie type of thing to do especially Camille's dad being an exhibitionist. And of course la cerise sur le gateau, the show was filmed on the nicest area of Paris, they didn't go to Belleville or La Chapelle or anywhere not fancy. They focused on one district so it's a tiny bit limited. But I get it Gossip Girl wasn't filmed in Harlem and I CAN tell they were inspired by it. Overall I enjoyed it ! It's good to see how we are perceived 😊
Agreed, they definitely tried to glam it up by filming in the nicest areas, having her wear designer clothes, walking around in heels. They were definitely trying to sell the dream! I thought it was cute though, I binged the series it was an easy show to watch with the episodes being 20 min long. Would love to see more diversity in season 2! There were a lot of sexual scenes i.e. the scene with the model during the shoot, I haven't seen anything as "risqué" as that in Paris since I've lived here!
Tiffanie, since you had to call the plumber is it safe to assume that you are responsible for plumbing repairs to your apartment? Why isn’t the landlord or owner responsible for plumbing issues? I guess that’s the difference from renting in the US and France.
I'd like to say that diversity in the business world is "hidden" in Paris. Obviously, the city is very diverse and I also felt like there was a white-filter on the city streets. However, in companies, I noticed a lot of diversity as an engineer (all ethnicities, all nationalities, all genders,...). However, when we had a meeting with a client, they always try to take the most white/white-passing skilled engineer they can. Most of the time, there is no white person on the team, so they take someone who "looks" and "sounds" French the most. There is a lot of room for progress in that area, but we're getting there
As a non-american it is literally unbearable for me to watch a show that constantly portrays Americans as more intelligent than others. And the thing you said about the French apologizing for not being fluent English speakers is just sad! I am happy that you see it as it is, but most native English speakers don’t give a damn about the fact that learning English is not an easy thing for people all around the world to do! I hate that every kid in my country is expected to know English whereas in the US many people don’t even bother to learn about other countries let alone other languages
“Why the girl always have to be white?” That’s the reason I have not watch movie. Glad you are doing review of this movie. Edit: I will check out show! Thanks for the review.
I agree that unfortunately people of colour do not appear as much in the American movie scene, I mean look at Gossip Girl or Selling Sunset. Which does not make sense since people of color consist of a huge part of American demographics. However, I would not make that a thing why they mostly concentrate on white women going to Europe/Paris from America more so than other non white women. White people are of European descend and it seems reasonable to seek their ancestral roots and culture from the continent they originally came from. Actually, that is a good thing for them to do, when white Americans consider leaving America for Europe, they are giving more space for the indigenous Native Americans who inhabited that land for thousands of years.
Omg.....I lived in one of the Victorian buildings that was owned by the founder of Eastman Kodak in Upstate NY and i lived what was formerly the maids quarters....I read up on it and found out that the top floor of Victorian houses/buildings were the servants quarters....Greats views but walking up to the apartment was a great workout.....

I love Emily in Paris. The funny thing is that for non-American and non-French woman like me ALL these cliches are quite TRUE and BELIEVABLE. Dont take it so serious, have FUN! Its exactly how I see Americans and French - in a nicest way. So neither French nor Americans, no r English should be upset ))) Of course all exaggerated but that Darren Star and New York isnt like its in Sex and the City but its HIS New York and it became OURS - to us - to the rest of the world. And its HIS Paris. And that the POWER OF ART to you. Rome in Roman Holiday movie is not the same Rome to Italians. But that how we see it - through the eyes of creators. Stereotypes do not come out of nowhere. Stereotypes of any Era do exist and they shine in ART like Cinema . Thats what ART is for. - Hollywood is also not the Hollywood we know and believe. So what? Its magnificent because it was created by people to be what we want it to be.

Your story telling is so funny! I would love to watch a "Tiffanie in Paris" tv show.
Lol!!! 🙈🤣
that would be sooo much better than emily in paris
Yeah totally understand I was meaning to say less expensive than typical apartments here in the city. Ahh yasss we got to change the narrative!
Back in the 70s, the French were very heavy smokers while my American student counterparts rarely smoked, and those who did picked it up in France.
i LOVE this idea!!! i also felt like the show was very PG in the acting, etc. but then there was a ton of sex so it was confusing lol.
LOL totally see your point there, never thought about that hahaha
Yeah it was weird it reminded me of a Disney show with sprinkles of adult content lol didn’t mesh
@@tvision6954 Lol!!
I felt the same way!!! It was like the tone was very CW and PG feeling, and then there was a ton of sex! I was so confused 🤣
@@taylorgayhart9497 same was so cheesy but like then it wasn’t HAHA
In Paris I Remember laughing with a friend on the street and a French woman told us to be quiet we were too loud!! 🤣I try to talk about my experiences living in Paris as well but I don’t like that black women are not included in the fairytale narrative. I love your channel! Oh and btw, It’s good luck to step in dog poop with your left foot
In France 🇫🇷 😆
Thank you so much!! We got to change the narrative!! And LOL about the dog poop I never knew that!
We never never in the fairytale narrative. There are movies like pretty woman, etc. but in black movies even a WELL OFF black woman settles for a man that’s not on her level. Smh.
@@TiffanieDavis which means we have to support each other as well
@@TiffanieDavis it was a massive balancing act! :)
I really enjoyed the show and didn’t take it so seriously as a lot of other people lol. I figured a lot of us could use some fluff right now with all that’s going on.
Totally, a nice distraction from all that is this world right now. Can't believe we're going into another lockdown here in Paris!!
Right that was my thought too. It was light hearted cute show.
@@011Nisha Exactement!
Absolutely!
But I miss home 😭
French culture is also really rich and France has so much nice interesting things to offer, don’t let the negative stops you...
Enjoy as much as you can!
It’s the sipping tea at the beginning for me lol
I was so excited for this show!
There are definitely a tonnnnn of opinions about this show!! Glad to share my perspective :)
In my first day in Paris, I caused a power outage in my dorm with a surge protector too 😂 I for some reason thought it would be ok because I had the adapter but I was wrong. It at least got me to practice my French with the dorm building front desk to help restore power.
The fact that they took your wholeeeee image and put a bunch of white faces on it, means you need to start your own sis!
Lol I'm hoping that's not the case! My friend was actually saying she knows the girl who they took inspo from

I live in New York and look forward to visiting Paris and the South of France in September with my hubby, so I've been glued to your videos these last couple of days!
yes, your voice is very loud while giving this entire review lol no disrespect. I am American too and I'm starting to notice how loud we are lol
LOL! 🙈😂
I just learned this and im a little shook 😂😂
wouldnt be surprised if creators of the show watched expats vids on youtube to get ideas! def would like a French perspective video:) just moved here from usa a few days after the show came out and found a bunch of similarities too haha
Super interesting point! And welcome to Paris!!
They usually get their ideas from normal people
I was gonna say ‘Emily in Paris ‘ seems so much like tiffanie in Paris 😂 I swear they got the idea from her channel !
@@thepinksnob7370 Maybe, but it doesn't come through on the show. Sadly.
There are quite a few videos from the French perspective...in English as well as French. :-)

So many of these videos seem to have a negative feel to it and urs just comes off as more positive and energetic! Love it! U need to do a side by side watch of every episode! Yasss we have to change the narrative! So much diversity here in Paris! x
I couldn't finish this show. The writing wasn't that great. And tbh even in NYC seeing black people in powered positions in luxury beauty is a rare sight.
Definitely wasn't a show for everyone lol! If cutesy rom-coms aren't you're thing I totally get it. Yes I completely agree on your point about NYC too - we need diversity alll across the board when it comes to luxury
"La préfecture" is a hell for everyone in France
Love this! My husband is French so we did watch the show together and he said there are soo many false stereotypes. I did enjoy the show though! It was nice to be able to travel to Paris via Netflix 😂 although it did make me miss France even more! I am hopefully we can go during the holidays 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I'm SO happy I found your channel. I'm starting to plan a move to Paris and your videos are so helpful. My friend just made me watch this show so this was too funny to recap after we finished. Also, I loveeee your shirt in this video, would you be willing to share where you got it? Thank you so much for all of these videos!
When I visited Paris more than 20 years ago, I found it to be one of the most diverse European cities. It had a big black population.
Yasss! Love to hear this!
@@TiffanieDavis you are the real Emily in Paris
I saw a review by a native Parisian that said she hated that Emily never took the Metro and that they didn’t show how diverse Paris is. As a Hispanic that has never been to Paris, I didn’t really know how diverse France is till personal research.
Yeah I definitely think this show was fiction hahaha, a lot of the real grind of Paris was left out. Hoping for more diversity in season 2
It is super diverse. I visited a couple of years ago and took the metro with my friend, she lives there and we had fun around the city, I didn’t feel strange or out of place (as a Latina woman) I would love to come back as soon as I have a chance! 😘

The oldest building in Paris apparently dates back to 1407 so over 600 years so even though I don't think the building Emily lives in is that old (it looks more like 19th century imo) there are buildings over 500...
As for the show.... well I don't wanna rant for pages about what I disliked about it as a French person so here is an opinion I agree with of a black Parisian man living in the US (if you haven't seen it)

I loved Emily in Paris and watched so many critiques of it on UA-cam. Yours was by far the absolute best! Love all your videos!! I think they really did try to steal your life! Lol
Hahah same I binged the entire series. So glad you enjoyed this video!! LOL on the stealing my life part 🙈
Wow wow wow! Thanks for the compliment though! I think when it comes to the media across the board we are to often left out of the narrative ☠️
I LOVE your hair!
LOVE How Expressive & Enthusiastic you are!☺️😁
I love your hair!
Bonne vidéo Tiffanie ! J'ai apprécié la série. Can you do a video about the Paris RER?
Merci bcp! Lol I actually talk it about it in a new video I have coming up about my worst moments in Paris - stay tuned 😉
It might be the show writers did some research/surveys of the American experience in Paris. Hence, the many truths/similarities. Good on them for authenticity.
Omg i was waiting to see if you were going to make a video about this when i saw the show i thought of you !
Hahaha yass I've been getting this a lot so figured I might as well put a little something together 😉

I personnaly like Belleville, his very mixed population, cafes, restaurants...
Need to visit!
In my part of the world Americans are considered to be loud and it's not always enthusiasm or excitement .
ooooop 🙈😅
Tiffanie, since you had to call the plumber is it safe to assume that you are responsible for plumbing repairs to your apartment? Why isn’t the landlord or owner responsible for plumbing issues? I guess that’s the difference from renting in the US and France.
I think it depends on the situation! When I had a leak the landlord covered it completely
oh god the RER *war flashbacks to 6pm commutes*
Thank you for making the video. I really enjoyed watching 🌻
Yay so glad you enjoyed!!
There is a lot of room for progress in that area, but we're getting there
Thank you for this video my daughter is considering College in Paris. Your videos have been enlightening.
Oh super cool! Glad to help :)
Love your videos. Would love to do a meet up with you when in Paris!!

This was cool....I didn’t watch the show...but I liked hearing about your experience comparisons ☺️
