    I completely disagreed with the both of you on this. I thought the movie rocked. Pretty much everything you guys hated, I loved. I'm a huge Trekker and I thought this film was the most Star Trek of all the new films. Also Jesus John, you were hyper as shit throughout this video.

    It's always interesting to see how people can watch the same thing and have a total different take on it. I agree that the antagonist was the weakest part of the film, but his motivation was pretty clear, just revealed too late and rushed for it to have enough impact. That bike was not meant to be ridden. It was in the mess hall same as they can be found in certain bars, it's was an ornament. I thought the bike scene on the trailer was dumb until I saw how it was introduced, then made sense. I can't say more on it because it might be a spoiler. I thought this movie was good and fun. This felt more like an episode than a movie, but worth going to the theater to enjoy.

    I enjoyed this movie a lot. I'm planning on seeing it a third time.
    A bit more emotional than the other films, as well as a bit more complete in terms of storytelling.
    One of my favorites this year.

    Good to hear some similar thoughts about the film. Read some early reviews that were highly positive and watched a few other UA-cam critics that liked the film and then I saw it a thought it was ok. Not terrible but no where near as good as the first two. I think Lins direction and Peggs script were working against each other. As usual my favourite thing about these reboot movies was the cast. Such great chemistry. Such a shame you have all this talent back for a film to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise and we get this... the fans and the source material deserved better.

    well I feel exactly as what you both feel, John. I just watched it and I'm kinda disappointed. I agree that the trailers didn't do the movie any justice so I watch it in hope that it would give me the original old school Star Trek feels. I'm not the old school fans and I admit that I belong to the new fans who love JJ Abrams version, so watching Beyond, I really hope that they give me how the true Star Trek movie feeling is. Even if they fail to give me the old school feeling, at least give me the entertaining crazy mumbo jumbo from Into Darkness.
    But man I was disappointed. The first arc was good, the sabotage scene was cool and I like it. But after they crashed onwards till the third act, it went downhill. It feels slow paced and I feel that at least the first rebooted movie and Into Darkness have better pacing.
    I don't get the old feeling that I should get and I don't even get the modern entertaining space action feeling as well. And Idris Elba was wasted. Considering they make his character as a villain that had personal vendetta against the body he swore his oath to, shouldn't they made his character work like Javier Bardem in Skyfall? That would be much better. The movie was flat, it was meh. I give the first one a 8/10 & Into Darkness a 7/10. Beyond get a 6/10 from me.

    Did you guys see the same movie that I saw? This movie is in my top Star Trek movies of all time. The Characters played so good off of each other. We get to see a part of the Star Trek world that we have not seen before. I also like how it ties into Enterprise and develops the back story. Spock/Bones were spot on and perfect, the action was awesome. Jahlya is a very good strong female character and this movie was fun. This movie was like watching an episode of TOS, a solid movie!!!!

      The 2009 film definitely had an idiot for a villain. A guy who travels back in time to a point where he could avert the disaster that claimed his planet, but instead takes revenge on random people who have next to nothing to with what happened to him. And despite that deleted scene with the Klingons, the film itself refuses to account for Nero's whereabouts for 25 years in between events. So, Abrams intentionally made it seem like he sat around doing nothing for two and a half decades waiting to exact his revenge. The film also had some really goofy moments of comedy that certainly didn't raise its IQ overall. Not to mention, they give a guy who just barely graduated Starfleet Academy a direct promotion from a cadet to being the Captain of the Flagship of Starfleet. It's really slapdash screenwriting.

    Idris Elba's character's motivation was more than his sense of abandonment. It had to do with the fact that he was an old war hero with no more wars to fight. Still, his motivation was weak. What was his plan beyond attacking the Yorktown? He definitely would have made a more interesting villain if they revealed his back story sooner and developed that a little bit more.

    • @Skull1Hunter
      @Skull1Hunter 8 років тому +1

      Still a better villain than Nero.

    • @discgolfer1974
      @discgolfer1974 8 років тому

      +Skull1Hunter No way! Nero was driven by the loss of his family and had a personal vendetta against Spock for failure to prevent the destruction of his home world. His response was to track Spock down, even through inter-dimensional time travel, and force him to watch over the destruction of planet Vulcan. That is an infinitely more compelling motive and leaves no questions regarding his endgame. Mind you, I did enjoy this film and consider it a notch above Into Darkness.

    His motivation was he was stranded for an unknown period of time and watched his entire crew save 3 die with no sign of rescue. Losing his crew pushed him over the edge you could see it in his final log entry. Also the device they used to extend their lives altered them physically so you don't know what it did to their already damaged mental state. I thought this was a great movie and it captured the feel of Trek.

    As a TOS fan (never really seen the other series or most of the movies) I really liked this one after being pretty disappointed by Into Darkness. I know it's been said a thousand times, but it really did feel like a TOS episode with a huge budget.
    Kirk was the best he's been in these movies; McCoy and Spock were fantastic together, after Bones (my favorite character) was kind of shafted in the last movie; Scotty wasn't just comic relief; and Uhura, Sulu and Chekov got some great moments too.
    It was the Enterprise on its five-year mission, they answer a call for help, it turns out to be a trap, they're stranded on a planet and have to work together to continue their mission and keep peace. Classic Star Trek.

    ***SPOILERS****
    As a life long fan I really like this film, a lot more than into darkness. I think the idea of Krull evokes a lot of lore from ST: Enterprise. To me this felt a lot more trek in places than either of the previous reboots. Having a MACO displaced and asked to live in a period of peace was very interesting. I think people tend to forget the Xindi and Romulan wars were very traumatic.

    You guys do realize Idris Elba's character is crazy right. Crazy people don't necessarily follow "logic". They just feel like doing stuff, like Idris Elba just can't help but feel abandoned and hatred which blinds him. Even you prove him wrong, it's hard for him to let go of that pain he felt. And I do agree his motivation was rushed and should've been earlier in the movie.
