In 1990, my father, my brother, and I bought a 22 foot Bayliner cuddy cabin on a galvanized two-axle trailer. The boat had been used at the Georgia coast, and all the hydraulic brakes, brake lines, and master cylinder were rusted beyond repair. I pulled the boat from the coast back to northwest Georgia with my high-top GMC conversion van. With no trailer brakes, that boat pushed us every time I hit the brakes. Took the rig back to m father's house, and we replaced all the brake components. After all those repairs, those hydraulic surge brakes worked great. All I had to do was barely touch my van's brakes, and that trailer immediately slowed or stopped everything. Can't wait to one day owning a trailer with electric brakes to be able to compare the two sytems

Just super proud of you. Been a follower for a few years now and have rarely commented. You always have a can do attitude and never settle unless it is done right. I pray that you continue to inspire young and old to stay after it. Hope you make more than a decent living as you deserve it.
50 years a vehicle life span!! Man clearly you are a very clever technician I watch ya videos all the time in the UK set yourself a goal and build the vehicle yourself. Ideas in your head are awesome game on man the 50 year car plan 👌👍
The axle that had been welded on was most likely narrowed to fit the trailer . Great setup for the hydraulic brake system using a Line-Lok like drag racing vehicles use to lock their front brakes to do burn-outs in the water box to heat their slicks . Great video Andrew . Love how well you treat Levi and Cody , man's best friend .
They can be shortened or lengthened that way, and it is perfectly safe. My dad recycled axles for 40 years. You can even weld just one end of the sleeve, and it works fine. We rented them that way, so you can adjust them to the trailer, rather than getting ticked that the axle you rented is a half an inch longer than the gap. Though, if it is going to be your permanent axle, I would still do the second weld, just after it was installed. Probably less wear and tear on everything else. The forces in the center of the axle are very small compared with near the hubs.
And without any maintenance, lol. I wish. I don't think there is a material out there strong enough to make brake pads out of to withstand 50 years but I get what he means. Apart from brake pads and discs, disc brakes should not need any other maintenance, but they do.
Dude, I'm always SO impressed with your ability to fix things. I wish there was somewhere where I could go learn how to do this sort of thing as a normal adult.
You can do this. Its not rocket science! I mean that sincerely with no disrespect to the people who do it (It is what I do). The biggest thing in the way is thinking you can't. Go to Sears or Harbor Freight and get some tools and go take your lawn mower completely apart, looking at each piece and seeing what it does and why it is there. You learn as you go. Every project I start, I learn new things and I have been wrenching since I was a child. That is how I learned so much, just doing it and figuring it out. With channels like Andrew's and the INSANE amount of DIY content UA-cam has, you can literally do anything if you have just a little common sense and a will to work and get your hands dirty.
Well his time at ITT tech probably didn't hurt. It's not easy earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Personally I can't do the math like Andrew can
This starts out with Andrew rebuilding the brakes in his swimming trunks and ends with all new brakes... who else can do that?? Loved his dad, " how did you move these?, Andrew.. " I just picked it up".. love it!!😄👍👍
It is glaringly obvious that as good as you treat your dogs, Andrew - Cody is feeling a little neglected. It is very cute to see him pushing his way in while you are trying to work. You gotta love Labs. That creeper you got is really nice. Having that adjustable head rest makes a huge difference.
Having been enslaved by my dad to work on trailer axles and tires since I was 4, I can finally say something useful about one of Andrew's videos. 1. You take off the axle by the spring eyes. You do this by taking off the nut and then hitting the bolt good and hard. It will rocket out, and could hit someone or something, so be warned. And wear gloves, or you could get bloody, metal likes to bounce back. A center punch may be necessary if the bolt does not go on its merry journey across the garage immediately. The hammer has to be moving fast for the bolt to beat the falling axle, like pulling the table cloth out while the plates are on the table. You don't take the hubs off first or the springs. It is just much easier to get it out and then work on it. Unless you are just going to do a brake job or replace a bad bearing. Nothing will happen generally after the first bolt is removed, but when you get the one out across from it on the other side of the trailer, it is going to fall and may swing toward you so anticipate that. And stay out from under the hub. And don't be geniuses that forget to put the trailer on stands first... Can't believe I have to say that, but... And you do have to take the tires off first, just not the hubs, springs, linkages or rockers. Well, often if there are linkages, you take them off together with the bolts. His trailer did not have link plates. 2. And maybe this should be #1, as it is important. You WANT TO SPLICE THE AXLE in preference to putting the spring seat too far from the hub. There is a huge amount of force between the hub and that seat...vastly more than there is in the center of the axle. Trailers are made in a wide array of widths. 99 inches is popular now days, as that is the legal limit. But they could be anything. 3. Welding that sleeve is not a problem at all. Most axles are recycled these days. They may be reused several times. As I said, the forces in the center are miniscule compared to the forces at the outside. When these things bend, and I have seen plenty, they bend between the hub and the spring seat. If you want higher reliability, make that distance as small as you can get away with. But don't let the tire rub the frame or the spring. 4. When we rented-out axles, we actually had "slider axles" for them to use. The sliders have that center sleeve, but only one end is welded. Then you can telescope them out to the size you need. No need for that second weld. Never had a problem. Though we had a few sizes of those, so we give people something that will still have 6 inches in the sleeve. 5. You may on occasion have to cut one U-bolt. If the spring is not attached to the trailer, it is much easier to get that off. But even if you have to cut one, the spring will come out without doing anything to the other or only loosening it just a little. It may take a crack of the hammer though. No need to ever cut both U-bolts. 6. If someone is building a trailer for a big boat or some other heavy load, use the single leaf springs. I mention this because it is counterintuitive. But the single leaf is stronger. It is always the spring with the eye that breaks. That one you want strong, and it is, when there is only one. The reason for multiple springs is mostly ride quality. We rarely ever saw a single leaf bent or broken. Lots of the others.

I truly admire you for not only doing what you do very well, but you also document it and share it! Congrats, Mr Camarata! Nice to see you on the right way using protection helmet, gloves and taking care of security. This comes first. Leading by the example - we’d like to see it in all places all the time for you and those that learns with you. Best regards from Brazil.
I know all about adjusting Drum Brakes. My first 5 cars had drum brakes & I learned from my dad how it was done. Once they were adjusted well, they worked very well. Good hard brake pedal & solid stops. Anthony
From an old salt that would not want to wear his hearing protection, I can now say that the ear plugs I didn't use were cheaper than the hearing aids that I now wear.
I have two tandem wheel trailers both use electric drum brakes they don’t have reverse braking problems uphill as the brakes only operate when brakes are activated. The brakes are proportionally applied by a brake controller in the tow vehicle which is fully adjustable for the load and road conditions. All trailers over two tonnes must have a battery system that applies its brakes if it separates from the tow vehicle. No need for hydraulics, with that we also have a mechanical hand brake for operation without tow vehicle. I’m sure you must have these over there. Thanks for the great videos - been watching till late hours!

Just super proud of you. Been a follower for a few years now and have rarely commented. You always have a can do attitude and never settle unless it is done right. I pray that you continue to inspire young and old to stay after it. Hope you make more than a decent living as you deserve it.
Thank you.
"Brakes should be required to last the life of the vehicle...so like 50 years" -Andrew Camarata 2021
I love it lol.
And without any maintenance, lol. I wish. I don't think there is a material out there strong enough to make brake pads out of to withstand 50 years but I get what he means. Apart from brake pads and discs, disc brakes should not need any other maintenance, but they do.
Still wait for him to design his own truck that’s gonna be epic
@@bassfishing71 Epic
And $500.000 to buy if you don't make it yourself. Things can last a lot longer, but nobody wants to pay for it.
Andrew could easily design things that last much longer. Today's manufacturers use planned obsolescence to continue making money off consumers.
@@MetalMike50 absolutely I’d rather pay more for quality
I appreciate the fact that you tried every bolt with a wrench of some sort before bringing out the demo grinder. Bravo.
Dude, I'm always SO impressed with your ability to fix things. I wish there was somewhere where I could go learn how to do this sort of thing as a normal adult.
Thanks. watching videos like this should help you do a similar project.
This man knows how to put in work like no other. Much respect.
Well his time at ITT tech probably didn't hurt. It's not easy earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Personally I can't do the math like Andrew can
I have opened the hood of my car, maybe, 3 times in the last 5 years. Here I am binge watching this dude work on heavy equipment.
Andrew's Dad:"How did you even lift those"
Andrew: "I just pick them up"
*silence*
lol
Yeah that was funny 😄😄
This starts out with Andrew rebuilding the brakes in his swimming trunks and ends with all new brakes... who else can do that?? Loved his dad, " how did you move these?, Andrew.. " I just picked it up".. love it!!😄👍👍
It is glaringly obvious that as good as you treat your dogs, Andrew - Cody is feeling a little neglected. It is very cute to see him pushing his way in while you are trying to work. You gotta love Labs. That creeper you got is really nice. Having that adjustable head rest makes a huge difference.
I love how Andrew has every tool in his garage.
Every new englander watching: "You should use some heat on those rusted bolts". Andrew: "An angle grinder makes heat"
I’m impressed that you wear the appropriate PPE. Smart man. Very rarely do I see someone wearing PPE anymore.
Andrew makes life Safer. When in life it's better to be safe then sorry.
I assume you never saw the video where he jumps out of the slide trac forklift going backwards down the hill! Love this guy!
@@geoffbragg3331 ...or the time he dumped a load of gravel while standing in the gravel as it dumped..lol
I was just talking to somebody about how I love your videos and then you upload!
You really need to let Cody help you more. He's a teenager now and seems eager to help.
"Maybe I should move that excavator."
That's our Andrew, always thinking ahead.
No one could ever accuse Andrew of not getting his money's worth out of a truck.

Andrew: oh I just pick em up.

Lol me too
So impressed by you Andrew and your skills.. and Cody the Inspector.
Nice to see you enjoying your new affluence, Andrew. New parts are so much easier to install.
Another great video, thanks for sharing with us, and your education / entertainment / humor are much appreciated. I truly admire you for not only doing what you do very well, but you also document it and share it! I have considered making some videos of some small home repairs, etc., but I have to be 100 present on the main job, fugettabout makin no stinkin' videos. Stay safe, and keep your shoes clean.
I would buy almost anything andrew has previously owned that is functional. He really takes care of his equipment
I love this channel. Lets hope it never breaks for no reason.

Cody sure loves you !! We had surge brakes and had to put a screw driver ahead of the master when backing up a hill.
Another upload, Andrews on a roll baby 😎
Congrats, Mr Camarata! Nice to see you on the right way using protection helmet, gloves and taking care of security. This comes first. Leading by the example - we’d like to see it in all places all the time for you and those that learns with you. Best regards from Brazil.
Well done Andy...after cutting off that first bolt...I was on my way to buy a new trailer...thanks for the headlamp tip...
"I guess that's so the mechanic doesn't get his shoes dirty" 🤣🤣🤣
I'm not embarrassed to say that I laughed out loud at the "Hey Cody, doing a lab inspection?" :-)
I did wear my hearing protection and I still can't hear anything.
WHAT?
I have a cat who’s as helpful as Cody. Always right there when I’m working on something.
Whoa, just sat and wondered when there was going to be another upload!
