Thank you for sharing this very interesting account. In my youth my Ucle Rudy took us to a place called Pirate's Cove, not far from Lompoc California. The story was that Drake had done some repairs on his ship there. On the hill above the cove was a place cut out of the rock, with holes on each side that may have been post holes to secure a cannon, as the position had a commanding view of the area. Years before, another Uncle had mentioned that a lone tree, sometimes indicated that a dwelling had once been there, so I investigated a tree nearby, and to my surprise found a old Buffalo nickel, blackened with age and the date very hard to make out. I think it may have been 1909?
Uncle Rudy got out his metal detector and uncovered a few rusted files and wrenches, and something that your story reminded me of.
    It was a 1929 California Chauffeur's badge.
Oh what interesting people and stories will be enjoyed when the resurrection of the dead that Christ Jesus promised, comes about. John 5:28,29

My dad went out to tomales bay with a metal detector once. A ranger came up to him and was quite serious in telling him he could not metal detect there.

That must've been surprising! Tomales Bay has strict conservation rules, especially around areas rich in history
