Spinning Happy Yellow Yarn on my new (to me) Vintage Ashford Traditional Spinningwheel

- Hello friends! It is Blue Monday, I am fed up with winter, so we are going to spin something yellow, happy, warm and shiny. And we will do so on my latest acquirement: a vintage Ashford Traditional spinningwheel. I have been on the lookout for a Ashford Traditional or Elizabeth on all of the Belgian online second hand marketplaces, and when I saw her in the beginning of December, I pounced. I Mean, who would not when faces with such an iconic spinningwheel?
In this video I will also talk shortly about the process of buying a spinningwheel secondhand via such online marketplaces, as this is often not recommended for beginner spinners, but buying a new spinningwheel is a big investment.
So join me on the maiden voyage, the very first spin of this spinningwheel! We will be spinning a colourful mix of fibers, which will first be combed and then blended on my drumcarder.
And while we're at it: let's think of a name for my new vintage spinningwheel. The naming convention for my wheels has always been other UA-camrs, so I was thinking Kristine (after @KristineVike ) or Nicole (after @NicoleRudolph ). What is your opinion or suggestion? Let me know!

I have a very, very old Ashford wheel that I found in an antique shop 35 years ago. You are so right about buying a name brand second-hand wheel. This wheel was already so old when I bought it, that the Ashford staff had to look in their archives to identify the model. They then were able to email me copies of the original owners manual and assembly instructions. And I was able to get new bobbins and a tune-up kit to get it working. I'm still spinning on that same wheel. I enjoyed seeing you turn floof into sunshine yarn. harpingJanet
Yay for spinning on second hand equipment! There's so much stories behind the Wheels 😁
Hahha, when you were stalking like a Hawk for a Spinning Wheel , and Pounced and Squawked , I almost fell off my spinning wheel chair Laughing so hard !! Thank you , I needed a good laugh ! 😄💕
Mission accomplished 😎
SO BEAUTIFUL!!! And now we are spinning wheel twins!!!
Yes twinsies ❤️
I so enjoy your passion for fiber arts. Yes the wheels speak. You are a joy.❤️
Thank you 🥰
I love Kristines channel!! Criminally underrated!
Right?! RIGHT?!
I love all of your little asides so much. I literally started choking at hashtag pro tips 😂😂😂
Hahaha 😁 we vibin' 😎
I did the same thing when seeking an Ashford Traditional! I finally found one at my local fiber arts guild, so purchased her from a fellow spinner (for around the same you paid). She’s about a 1973 wheel and my kids got me a new multi-whorl flyer for Christmas. I’m still learning (I’m a spindle spinner) but love her. I named her Gladys. Glad is as glad does …
Glad is as glad does 😂😁
I think mine is from around 1975! And I'm looking in getting a multi whorl flyer as well!
It's been raining miserably for two weeks in Sweden as well. I'm glad to see you spinning something happy, it's definitely needed.
Kristine's channel is SO underrated, I love every video so very much!
Gotta make your own happiness when the sun isn't giving the needed vitamin D 😅
And exactly! I do hope at least a couple of people might discover her channel now because of this
I bought my Ashford Traddie in '84. I think it was ten years old then. I have spun more than 2000 pounds of wool on it. I got my Haldane Orkney double drive wheel two years ago and it has become my 'go to' wheel. The Traddie is now my dedicated plying wheel.
The yellow colors are so sunny and warm! The bobbin is huge. Congratulations on the new wheel!
Thank you ☺️
You are so refreshing! I love watching your chaos goblin process
Thank you 🥰
Haven't gotten to the yellow yarn yet.. but the spotted sheep jumper is looking SO NICE 😍
The yarn is beautiful!
Thank you 🥰
Another suggestion for a name Theresa from the passionknit spinner lovely lady and loves her wheels but I like Walter from Ashford as well that was a great suggestion
It's rainy where I am too, so thank you for the little bit of sunshine 😉 I love the outcome!! I can't wait to see what you turn it into. Welcome to scotch tension life ❤ I've always loved those ashfords, they just look so so cute!
They are cute indeed 😁
I was gifted a 1981 Traditional Ashford spinning wheel by my neighbour, She belonged to his late Mother and she spins beautiful, I did buy a new scotch tension, drive and and and I named her Janet after original owner 😍 I've wanted one of these wheels for many years, I also have a Ashford traveller wheel called Athena
Traditionals are great wheels, and vintage Wheels always have such Nice stories to tell 😁
I bought my first Ashford for $88 in 1971! It was my first tax return. I'm on my third. You'll love it's simplicity and ease of use. I think my present lovely is about 35 years old and I'm presently working some cotton.
Cotton! Impressive! That's something I still have to try myself ☺️
@julieannsmithmusic: Third tax return or third spinning wheel?
Hi Jente, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️
It's been cold and very rainy ☔ in my part of England, until it decided to snow Monday and Tuesday. Probably about 4 inches.
I love your New Wheel 🎡 and the Yarn you Spun on it are both beautiful and amazing.
I think Spinning makes us all happy 😊
Happy Spinning Sweet Fibre Friend 🎡🐑🥰
Take care and stay safe
Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🐕
Snow is predicted here for tomorrow! Hope you're Well and warm 😁
@@MijnWolden Hi Jente, I'm ok and keeping warm thanks. I hope you don't get too much snow.
You stay warm and well.
Thankyou so much for the Heart ♥ Reply Sending Heart ♥ back to you Fibre Friend 🐑🥰
Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🐕
That yarn looks so fluffy and wonderful!! I'm not usually a fan of yellow, but it's a more golden color and the browns really add some depth to it.
Congrats on your new wheel!
Thank you 🥰
I play bobbin chicken way too much >_>
This onion yellow is SO bright, I am amazed. It really gave brightness and warmth to the overall yarn, too, despite how much it was mixed with more muted colours. A lovely, cheerful yet subtle result. I might have to go look for the dye video.
(Also my vote is on Kristine, the vibes just fit)
I don't have An onion dyeing video yet, but in a couple of weeks there Will be one 😁
@@MijnWolden I see 👀 I'll wait for it then.
A wonderfully relaxing video, and some beautiful yarn at the end! It does look very squishy indeed.
Inspired by the breeds you usually spin, I got 2 kilos of different Dutch sheep fibres, and I'm having so much fun playing with them! It's fascinating to me how much more character these fibres have compared to the Merino that I started out with. And the natural colours! 😍
Oooh which ones did you get? 😁
Raevyn where did you get your dutch sheep fibre from please?
What a great video! I love the yarn. I also love Kristine Vike, she's one of my favorite channels to watch. I would definitely vote for Kristine!
Thank you 🥰
My one and only wheel is an Ashford traditional I bought in 2000. It really is a solid little wheel and parts are easy to get even now. I did change out my drive band for a modern nylon one as I had a terrible time tying the string ones with my arthritis. with that lazy kate I made a small modification. I use old knitting needles instead of the wires and just put one of those rubber point protectors on the end. The wires sometimes when you are plying fast slide out and your bobbin falls.
I have clamped one of thos tiny clothespins you use to hang picture on one end of the lazy kate wires, that seems to hold it in place as well
I have one just like this called Peace cost me $40 it is a single drive and then bought a Ashford traveller for $25 called Joy. Many very happy spinning. I got them so cheap as the seller wanted it to go to a spinner. Sending good vibes from Katy from NZ 😊
That's a great deal! 😁 Happy spinning!
lovely spun yarn! (i admit, all of your spun yarn is amazing and lovely!)
if you haven't picked a name yet, first name that came to mind to me actually was Nicole Rudolph when you described the spinning wheel. :D
The more I spin with her, the more she feels like a Kristine. 🥰
Since Jente is headed in the Kristine direction you know there is only one thing for her to do: acquire another wheel she can name after Nicole Rudolph.
Beautiful color yarn. My favorite colors
Thank you :)
Gorgeous color
Kristine all the way 😎
I think you should name her Grace after Grace Shalom Hopkins. She’s very passionate about fiber arts and reminds me of you. I just found your channel, and I love it! I also sent your video to Jillian.
Beautiful name, I'll keep in mind for when I buy some more fiber tools, because the Ashford is now named Kristine 😁
Love your videos almost as much as I love Ashford wheels. Can I suggest a name with a difference. ‘Walter’ the founder of Ashford wheels and the inventor of the scotch tension system (a name he borrowed from his engineering, background - you ‘scotch’ a wheel to stop it from spinning. This word was modernised during World War II to ‘chock’.)
I did not know this, interesting!
That looks like my jumbo bobbins on my Ashford traditional
Christine/sewstine 💯!!!!!
She's cool too!
You can adjust your intake tension with your bobbin tension ball. Play around with that as you will have to adjust the tension as your bobbin fills.
I know 😁 her ratio is just much higher (bigger? My English is failing me) than what I'm used to with my other Wheels
@@MijnWolden just ora Tice loosening the bobbin tension a lot than gradually tighten it. You'll find your sweet spot to match your other wheel intakes
My first wheel was a 70’s Ashford traditional that I received from my mother in law. I wonder if the extra fibre prep also helped make it a lofty yarn. Well done. Can’t wait to catch up with what you have done with it.
That might be a while before you get to that video :D
This is beautiful yarn! I need to start collecting onion skins…
You might need to indeed
Love the yarn! The color is perfect ❤I just got a spinning wheel from my finnish family. They've had it in the family for at least 3 generations so it is veeeeery old. I don't know what type of spinning wheel it is, and it seems to have a few missing parts. It is also not in the best condition as it was kept in a barn. I'm going to have to figure out how to restore it...
There probably are a lot of UA-cam videos that can help you with restoring! Great to have a family heirloom 😁
What a beautiful wheel! I also really want an Ashford traditional or elizabeth one day!
If it's within your range on 2dehands.be (Belgian Marktplaats) there are a traditional and a Elizabeth for sale in Wallonia 😉
@@MijnWolden thanks for the tip! But I still have to save up some money first, I first want to buy a loom! After that I will start looking for another wheel 😁
Congrats on your new wheel.
Softspoken and chatty? How about Gwen, from "Gwen's shenanigans". Fun and interesting content with a delightful amount of chaos added to the mix.
I never heard of her, but she sounds like someone I'd vibe with tremendously. Off to check her channel out!
Maybe "Bex" like Tiny Fiber Studio? She's soft spoken and has a traditional vibe.
I've named her Kristine now, and now that I've got to know her a bit more I find it's the perfect name for her 😁
I just got my first Saxony wheel (used & vintage) last weekend! It's a double drive.
So exciting! Have fun getting to know your wheel :D
Name suggestion: Trish from Fibre Love Diary :) Congratulations on your new wheel! Lovely yarn!
That's a channel I do not yet follow, maybe I should change that 🤔
Love your channel, hi from Denmark ❤im a spinner to
Happy spinning!
If you have trouble with spinning your singles in the beginning when the bobbin is still very empty. You can put pipe insulation on your bobbin before you begin! It also helps when you're at the end of your plying and the yarn is harder to get off the bobbin!
I didn't have that sort of troubles though (more prevalent with my Bernadette), this one's ratio is just much higher than my other Wheels, something I need to adjust to 😁
❤
Inga from knitting traditions
Tashi from Stitches and starlight?
She's a rad human indeed! I vibe with her on a chaos goblin meets chaos gremlin way. But I feel like a really unusual wheel like a spinolution or a majacraft would better fit her 🤔
I think her name should be "Lorelei" which means "murmering" :)
What about Shannon from “Shannon makes” beautiful content on her channel
I kind of feel like Shannon would be a great name for a salvaged spinningwheel, you know what I mean? 😉
@@MijnWolden I do know what you mean but second hand also fits for her thrifted would be better I agree
