- Queen Mary 2 in severe storm: 7m waves, wind 11 Beaufort, 5.10.2011 between Quebec and New York. Celebrity Summit and Silver Whisper hat to turn back to Quebec to avoid storm. Queen Mary 2 is built to stand such weather conditions.
Thanks for posting. We've sailed on the QM2 three times now, one of them a very rough crossing -- but that amazing ship can handle rough seas like no other ever built. We did an October crossing, sat in the dining room sipping champagne in 30 foot seas. You'd look out the window one second, saw only sky, the next, only water. What a ship.
kthoennes sounds magical. My husband and I are booked to return to Southampton from New York on her soon. (December 2021)
@@JulieWallis1963 I think the first sailing is April 2021, and we'll try to be on it -- as long as COVID doesn't extend the shut-down. Thinking of the Queen Mary makes life feel normal and civilized again.
Did you get sea sick?
I love these videos of QM2 sailing through the worst sea conditions the Atlantic can throw at her like she's sailing through a kiddie pool on a calm summer day.
It is obvious why the deck chairs must be so stable. Amazing what the sea can do with such a huge ship. And how cool it plows through the waves.
Nice video.
Waves at 6:31 and 7:27 were impressive. I did a QM2 crossing in rough weather December 2017 not as rough as this but pretty good. Not a boring video for those of us who have sailed on this magnificent ship in stormy weather. A true ocean liner not a hotel atop a barge.
What great footage from qm2 during crossing transatlantic terrible storm 😳. Can't imagine how much powerful tha ship has to tackle this types of storm and rough deadly waves.
What separates an ocean liner from a cruise ship is the ability to navigate seas like this.
Aaron Donovan, yep, and not only that but to do so on a regular schedule.
These videos make me want to go on a transatlantic cruise !
No way ! Back in 1981 i did a cruise between New York and Nassau and that was bad enough when the seas got a little rough .
What's nice about being sea sick?
amazing footage thanks for posting! I had family and friends onboard at the time - they really enjoyed the ride by all accounts... amazing ship - the best for this kind of weather.
We were on board the QM2 at this time. I have similar video but the quality is much lower so I've not posted it. It was a thrilling ride for sure. Can't think of a ship I'd rather be on to deal with this kind of weather.
Seems like a severe storm for most ships is a mild breeze for QM2
Great video! It really gives an impression, what ocean traveling at rough seas feels like. Thanks for sharing!
Very amazing footage - I love storm, waves and the "Queen" - Thank you for posting
great footage. the average ship would have been in trouble in those seas. amazing how little she was pitching.
I want to make a crossing on the QM2 during a storm. Great footage.
Excellent footage! My wife and I were on the Royal Caribbean "Freedom Of The Seas" and we encountered waves up to 17m they were saying! OMG the ship was going up and down as much as my Sea Ray 390 Sundancer does in 3m waves lol. She handled it no problem though... Other than some broken dishes and a few people fell and got hurt. Nobody got seriously hurt thankfully. Lots of people puking though... You could smell it almost everywhere I went. Thank God my wife and I had dramamine, otherwise we would have been throwing up as well I'm sure. It happened at night, so we couldn't see much unfortunately. That was a crazy night though ;)
The Queen Mary 2 is a rock star ship! She pulled into port right next to us in Acapulco back in 2006 and made the 960 foot boat I was on feel small. I hope to sail on that beauty one day...but I'll hope for better weather than that shown in this video!
CrocDoc1, sail during the summer months, specifically from June to August, if you want the best possible weather.
The Cunard ships where built for transatlantic trips. When storms like this come up .Unlike your everyday cruise ships. For this reason they probably can withstand a storm a lot better.
It's the Queen Mary 2 an ocean liner first, cruise ship second.
practically un sinkable
@@randomrazr 😂
@@randomrazr Sadly, they said much the same thing about 'Titanic'
This ship is amazing. I really need to go back on it is so peaceful on board. So much to do and little time to do it
With this conditions, I think the stabilizers have not been used. The ship was hanging to the starboard side, wind has been very strong.
The ONLY ship I would ever trust/ feel safe on during a storm.
+R Jackson You're right. I wouldn't trust those top heavy floating Butlins Holiday cruisers. QMII is a real seagoing ship.
the ship was MADE for storms
What about queen Victoria and queen Elizabeth?
QV and QE are closer to cruise ships, but the QM2 was designed to be a heavy duty ocean liner.
Stek TV not
Been there, done that. On my return trip from NYC to Southampton, we had perfect storm conditions one night. The only evidence was that, on returning to my cabin, I found that the computer keyboard by the monitor was on the floor. The Britannia restaurant was almost empty that night.
That would be a aw hell no to that glass elevator
150,000 tons and way stronger than the original QM2. This one was designed right. If they'd only followed through and done the same for Queen Victoria. The new Queen Elizabeth is somewhat better but the QM2 is the gem.
Hi mrFalconlem,
A small correction if I may. You stated: 150,000 tons and way stronger than the original QM2. The original ship you refer to is the RMS Queen Mary. There is no “2” in that particular ship’s name. She was named in honor of Mary of Teck, the Queen Consort of George V of the United Kingdom.
Both the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier and the Cunard ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth and MV Queen Elizabeth respectably, are named after Elizabeth Tudor, the first Queen Elizabeth, not the current Queen.
If both ships had been named after the current Sovereign of the United Kingdom, they would be referred to as HMS/MV “Queen Elizabeth II” as she is the second Queen Regnant of that name to reign over the British nation. And don’t count the original RMS Queen Mary out when it comes to structural strength. Remember, she was designed as an ocean liner, with the storms of the north Atlantic in mind when she was built. If she were functional today, she would match any ship a float in terms of elegance and style.
😜
@@Steve9312028 holy shit. You just fucking wrecked em over 1 mistake
It don't matter how big they makes ships when there out there, Mother natur eis bigger and stronger. Beat that ship builders!!
the skipper of this huge ship is great I salute you mr captain skipper!
Skipper was Captain Kevin Oprey. He went on board QM2 the first time in Southampton, the same day we set first time step on the ship. Before QM2 he was Skipper on P&O ships.
Brilliant..thats Proper Crossing weather right there!
Amazingly she's heading back to Brooklyn from a cruise to Canada in this
We were on board. It was a lot fun!!
That huge ship was even healing to starboard a much of the storm, due to the wind. 7 meters from normal sea level were the seas average height. That would mean half were higher, not to mention the occasional rouges.
Thomas Hill 😎😎🤣😃🤣🤣😂😂😂😍😘😗😘
On the Titanic it was a Live Band, here came the music from a "conserve" ;-)
Now compare this with the Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the seas....that suffered a lot & caused panic among the passengers......QM2 all the way 1st class
Wow, the ocean water leaked inside! That's the kind of cruise I'd like to be on board.
This ship is unbeatable!
The captains wife always tells me that they steer around storms. If this is steering around the storm,I would hate to know what going "through it" is like!!
QueenNoTeetha151 hell
Must be a large ship- remarkably stable. As long as I take my meclizine pills, I actually love storms on a cruise ship. Listen to the wind whistling- watching the pool's water slough around, sight of huge waves....I wanna be there!
Great video.
A shade on the gusty side perhaps but no problem at all for the QM! Her 150,000 tonne displacement is a third more that some of the US (aircraft) carriers.
I was on her during this storm, glass flying everywehre! It was hecktic.
well qm2 had this 4 stabilizing wing beneath her, controling the ship and gliding through the waves.
They stay inboard in Winds over Force 9 so they weren't being used here. Winds were Force 11
There are only 2 stabaliser wings.
what a stable ?
The cruise ships during a storm, run back to port, while QM2 and her sisters go right through it.
Try this on a 210' Coast Guard Cutter...better than any ride at Disney World!
a very stable ship
Wuuao! A big storm 🛳️ 🌬️🌊
Mahirap seaman Grabe dadaan ka sa kadedbolan isang pagkakamali Lang libong buhay parang pilot at kapitan the same ng responsibilidad amen
What is the difference between an ocean liner and a cruise ship?
who wants to go on a cruise in this kind of weather the ocean is so unforgiven
A different experience in the open ocean, it isn't always just storms and rough seas. Plus it's gotta be a privilege to travel in on of the last ocean liners in the world if not the last one.
Could have been worse, if it was the original Mary you'd be on the ceiling and someone would have literally broken their neck on a stairwell while a piano redecorated the dining room to match sticks via an excellent rendition of a wrecking ball.
Also, isn't it funny how 100 years ago everyone would have dreaded a storm, these days half the ship hopes to be in one.
Thank you, Dream to go sail on Qm2...did you have stateroom with balcony, and would you recommend?
No, we had standard inside no view cabins (2 voyages), but we were happy. Nice company, nice ship. I can recommend ;-)
@whoarethebrainpigs
simply because we were trying to have some "Indian Summer" and on our way back. That's the reason. No Indian Summer on the Bahamas uh?
Was really a "ride"... especially impressive the water moving from one side to the other throughout the wintergarden.... poor cleaning boys... they didn't know where to start blocking the entry of the water at the doors.... was simply too prompt and too much. But really was an experience.Congrats to all employees involved!
Think for those great sailors who had wooden ships 100years ago...
what a great ship.
I’ve been in worse than that from Hull to Brugge
meu Deus que tempestade do cão... eu sou apaixonado por navios mas se eu estivesse lá ia estar morrendo de medo
I just don't see the point of going on a cruise ship and *not* experience at least one storm.
That's nothing. On the Titanic, they played casual music while it was SINKING.
Sorry, that was in bad taste, I know.
@millisglashaus Indian summer!!looks more like an Indian monsoon, a cold one!! I would go to india for an indian summer,,
i cannot believe that our ancestors used to cross these oceans on rickety wooden sail ships. PASS.
great footage ,,,but why would people want to cruise from NY to quebec at this time of year wouldnt the bahamas be a better locale????/
Best time of year to do so.. the fall foliage is at its peak in the northeast US and adjacent southeast Canada in early October
It was a perfect time to go to Quebec and to Nova Scotia and to Maine, Boston,
and Newport. We loved every minute of it, and were only briefly frightened by the
storm. It was the first time on QM2, eagerly followed by many others.
I would rather be at work if this is considered a vacation
Jessica Sakas meh! Only wimps _holiday_ in eternal sunshine. Crossing the Atlantic in winter is never going to be all sunshine and lollipops. You stick to Disneyland sweetie. The Queen Mary 2 isn’t for the likes of you anyway. Keep working hard at those job applications, maybe one day your wish will come true.
I wonder if the bars had to close during the whole trip. Or, they just close at certain times when the storms cause too much listing?
De Medici Catherine, nothing but the promenade and top deck and maybe the Royal Court Theater stage performances close during bad weather. Life aboard otherwise continues on as normal regardless of the weather. If I'm right, that bow view through the window is from the Commodore Club martini lounge on deck 9 all the way forward.
@@tonyhinojosa7710 Thanks Ton!
Very Good ))) :)
This isn't even that bad. I've been through worse.
I wouldn't call that a severe storm.
If it would be a severe storm
you would have been on the floor
and prayed to your creater
That's a normal storm, I have experience
much worse. when you are laying down
on the floor an barely can hold on.
no that's not a severe storm
John Davis so what? you need an appreciate??
Johnatan Davis, that's a force 11 storm. It only seems weak because you're viewing it from a proper ocean liner's perspective. QM2 was designed to sail smoothly through the roughest weather the Atlantic can throw at her. Let's see the Symphony of the Seas, Carnival Vista, or any other lesser cruise ship handle that storm.
Mahirap kaya ako po d ko tinutulak mag seaman baka ikaw pa macc ng family nila anyway Mahirap na mag seaman dami sumusuko Jan sa apply pa Lang pipigain kn Mag interview 4na kapitan pwera pa principal omg

wowowo
Hit like if you love to watch ships sinking in storm...
QM2 is make for that shit :)
Jännää!
Even god disable to sink this ship.
same words were used for the Titanic... It is made of steel, it will sink, if the leakage is big enough. OK, it is Dillinger Hütte Steel, but only at the most important points...
Bambang Sugianto idiot!
Bambang Sugianto My friend you've gotta be high on drugs then.
It's still a modern day cookie cutter ship. Not built with the pride the old liners were.
True but Cunard is one of the last surviving old ocean liner company's and She is one of the good cruises
Why go to that much trouble just take a plane you will get there faster.
It was a booked cruise. Captain decided to go through, because this ship is built to stand such conditions. plane will also have troubles during hurricane. stupid comment from you !
@@voyagetom69 Planes can get away from hurricanes and with new technology they can fly over them or decide on a different route it's the reason flying is safer.
After seeing this video I think I will stick to flying even though I don't like it.
I have traveled on this ship 3 times it is overated.
why?
Why did you go on it 3 times lol
Serpentine it was the only ship available .
