I really love hearing how their tone and delivery has improved since "Are You Alright?". Wilbur also seems much more confident in his vocals now.
I feel like their sound has just devolved into an arctic monkeys wannabe, Are You Alright actually had it's own sound and feel and it feels like it's own original thing, with every song being recognisable in its own way. The new EP however just sounds all the same and is worse than the live versions IMO. but who knows maybe I'll grow to like it.
@@timtaxevasion I personally thought that Pebblebrain sounded all like the same, I sense a lot of inspiration from bands and theres not much of originality here but Portrait Of A Blank Slate blew me away as a non Lovejoy fan
@@Cythereans PB was so mid too from a musical standpoint. Yeah it sounded the same, AND a lot of the sounds clashed together so bad. Look at perfume. Wilbur's rhythm parts sounded so out of place with the lead and bass. and it was like that for a lot of AYAR and the rest of PB. But this EP. It feels like they finally found their sound and it GOES so hard.
@@temerianlillies My only complaint is how high Wilburs voice is for this all, I think he would do better at even just one octave lower.
@@Cythereanseah same. Especially for the deeper cuts. It would benefit a lot more for him to sing lower and even strain a bit. Like scum sounds better in that live recording of them at shaky knees. The strain in his voice there works so well for it.
I love how each song is a different form of self deprecation, tackling the different aspects that Wilbur (as a character) hates about himself, each song delving into a different insecurity he has and in turn venting his emotions.
In Portrait of a Blank Slate, he talks about feeling like a nobody, like he has no personality and in the end is just another guy, a blank slate with a boring life.
In Call Me What You Like, he degrades himself for how stupid he is. He thinks he's being cheated on, while at the same time trying to delude himself into believing it isn't true, all of it contributing to insecurities that no one would want to be with him.
In Consequences, he vents about well, the consequences of his actions, and how incapable he feels of handling his impulses and thinking about the future. He just ends up drinking the night away without thinking about how much it'll suck the next day.
In Warsaw, he expresses discomfort with this girl's habits as well, realizing she's just as bad for him and leading him into developing unhealthy habits. Wilbur chides her for those habits, especially during the speech, but at the same time he's complacent. "She hopes to god that I just choke" is both projection and truth, they'd be better for each other if they never met.
And finally in Scum, he again talks about this codependency he and this girl have, but this time focusing on the type of people this girl gets with... Scum. He sees himself as scum, and believes that's all this girl sees in him, and everyone else she goes with. Scum that she can drag down more. In the end, all he wishes is to be free from her, and this cycle. To no longer be scum, dragging himself down and letting her pull him farther.
Through every song, that girl is a common motif, a focus for all of Wilbur's securities, someone that he believes is the cause of everything that makes his life worse. Yet Wilbur is an unreliable narrator... which is why we get one more song.
It's Golden Hour Somewhere. In this song, they finally split for good. The girl heads for some rich Tesla dealership owner or something, a relationship Wilbur chides. It doesn't really matter if his ex is a gold digger looking to hit it rich with that guy, and it doesn't matter if it's really love. All that matters is she's gone for good, and both Wilbur's influence and hers can't affect each other anymore. In doing so, Wilbur loses someone to blame. His self destructive tendencies no longer have someone else to project onto. Wilbur can't accept it, and so while he tries to attack something else, the elites, their fancy cars, everything they sell you... he can't help but realize his life just... sucks. And it's his fault. Regardless of how much he hates the rich, how much he hates his ex, everyone more successful than him... it's still worse when you can't pay.
And so, it becomes his Golden Hour. At least, somewhere. Somewhere, it's someone's sunset, the end of their day, and with it, the end of Wilbur's. I firmly believe he dies by the end of the album, hanging himself with the rope he bought.

I will mention that someone said that the whole album gave like, murderish vibes, and or something similar. I think this one guy commented how "golden hour" also refers to the hour after a murder is committed and stuff, then there's the "You'll still flinch when his blood pool touches you" or the "its Stockholm that she's stuck on"

im honestly so astonished at how far this “silly little band” has came. i remember being around when lovejoy was just a thought and then the first and second EPs were released, i went to two of their gigs and now theres this EP and they’ve been on radio stations and are touring the world doing gig after gig. im honestly couldnt be prouder of all of them. they’ve worked so hard for this and its paying off. i have my upmost respect for this band as i watch them grow bigger by the day. just their music has helped me and so many others through so much and it’s obvious how much they care for all their fans. this silly little band isnt so little anymore and i couldn’t be happier.

For the last 2 or 3 years I've been struggling with mental things and since I found Wilbur's music I've been more happy with everything, and then Lovejoy comes around and I've never felt better. Right???? It popped off so hard I was blown away! Others are good too but portrait of a blank slate is something else entirely (and so is my immediate favourite. I'm saying immediate because who knows what song will grow on me, as Lovejoy songs tend to do)

I've been here since the first EP dropped, Knowing this was dropping on friday literally carried me through a really rough week mentally. Cheers to Wilbur and the rest of the band, y'all have come so far!
I love how despite having been around for not too long as far as bands go they’ve already grown so much and become fairly prominent in their genre it’s so amazing to me
has to be entirely intentional that the lyrics for the chorus of Portrait of a Blank Slate includes "Said, please just let me stay/Oh, just let me stay" and then in Warsaw the chorus goes "Just please just let me go

Scratch that, the entire EP absolutely wrecks. Right on, Lovejoy!
This EP is amazing! I feel like it’s sort of a blend of “Are you alright” and “Pebble brain” cause it has pebble brain’s, sort of upbeat and energetic feel, but it also has some of “Are you alright” by being more serious sounding. I love this band so much, keep at it!

I know like after only two years, it’s expanded from Wilbur’s fanbase to a Lovejoy fanbase. The songs are on the radio, tours in the Uk and US. When people say they were never a little band, I agree. They were a big band. Now they are bigger.

I'm pretty late to the party, only becoming a Lovejoy fan earlier this year, but this community has been so welcoming. I don't think I've encountered any legit gatekeepers which is a huge plus! Of course, this band is freaking amazing, I really love how down to earth and connected to the fans they are. I remember finding Lovejoy back in 2020-2021, and absolutely falling in love. I repeatedly listened to Taunt, as that song was what got me into the band. I remember staying up at night, waiting for Pebble Brain to release. This band means so much to me. This band got me into guitar, made my interest in music spike, and helped me find myself. I listen to this band I feel refreshed, I feel at home. Ever since those clips from gigs of Lovejoy singing these songs, i knew the songs scum, IGHS, and Consequences were my tops. Scum I already knew, was my song. I felt so connected to that song, the exact way I did when I heard Taunt. It was like discovering the band again. The feeling was beautiful, comforting, and it meant everything to me. Over and over again I played the gig clips of those songs, singing the lyrics I thought I knew. For that whole over half a year, I’ve been so excited for this to drop. Now I’m listening to the ep on UA-cam, waiting for it to release on Spotify like I once did last year. Lovejoy, I am so proud of how far you’ve came. You inspire so many people, you’ve helped people, and it’s so beautiful to watch you grow. Seeing where you started to where you are now. I’m here with you, every milestone and every step of the way. 🤍🖤

Happy 1 year, Wake Up & It's Over! I remember last year it becoming the absolute bop of my May and summer. My holidays wouldn't start without Warsaw playing on the TV. 2 songs from the EP I had the honour to translate on Genius. My most open-hearted gratitude goes over to everyone who had their part in creating this abslolutely stupendous piece of musical art
