One of the hardest things to be is a "frugal" car guy. Buy something that you can reasonably afford and is in a condition that it is going to be relatively reliable and learn how to wrench on it and enjoy the hell out of it.
I had a 1994 Civic I got for $250. Only repairs it needed were a new brake master cylinder and front wheel bearing. Beyond that, new tires and fluids. Ran like a clock, even with me treating it like a rally car.
I've seen plenty of people say, "You're not a real car guy if you drive regular traffic." "You're not a real car guy if your car is stock." I learned how to turn a wrench on my 2007 silverado classic. It was my graduation gift, and I couldn't be happier with it. Anyone who says that's not what it means to be a car guy just doesn't understand how some people can be happy with having a "good enough" car and money in the bank.
I am not a "car guy" but I am a guy who needs cars. What I have learned is: 1.) all vehicles have problems it just depends what you are willing to put up with. 2.) there are like hundreds of tiny little things that can completely turn your car into a paper weight. If you screw up an oil change, engine destroyed. If you strip an engine bolt for an essential component you can destroy the engine, if your KEY doesn't work properly the car is not drive able, You could have the most reliable engine in the world but if the starter isn't reliable then the car is worthless because you will be left stranded. There are so many components that ALL have to work for the car to work. 3.) Everything is hard, nothing is ever "easy". Based on my experience with cars they are all disposable junk. For me I think the way forward is to buy cheap cars drive them just doing basic maintenance and once major repairs start to creep up, get rid of it and get something else. I am learning that these cars just aren't worth the time and money to keep "pristine" or whatever that even is. Use em, do maintenance, and get rid of them when they start becoming a headache. Also chrome wont get you home. No point wasting money on flashy stuff when the car will be bricked because of some simple failure.
Best move I made was getting out of my Protege and RX-8, and getting a small loan on third Gen Prius. That thing has carried me across the country and got me to and from into my white collar career. Which put me in a position to pick up MR2 Spyder and have the income throw money at it without ruining my life The MR2 Spyder being a conversation starter in the Midwest is too real
A friend of mine got a $4000 2007. It needed a HV battery, ABS module, and the cat got stolen. He had better luck with his old 1990 Chevy Cavalier, and he got that car for free. Priuses aren't bad cars, but they're too expensive for what they are.
Lexus Ct200h is also a nice Prius alternative. I rented a 2020 Prius last year after driving WRX's, Audi Q5's & a Merc GLA 250 & I actually liked it. The amount of gas saved became a game. I got close to 63MPG.
I used to work for a car auction in Japan and buying a normal sedan is pretty safe, but if you're looking for a popular sports car, you're navigating a minefield. Odometer fraud is a huge thing in Japan. Dealers are very greedy and will be openly turning back the odometers and replacing instrument clusters right there at the auction in front of everyone, (but not on auction day of course). If you can't go there and physically look at the car and have a good mechanic examine it, you're just gambling.
Same in eastern Europe. Dealers import old luxury shit from Germany, since it holds up so well they turn back the odo 200-300k km, then sell a "mint" bmw with 200k km. I don't blame them but luckily digital odo and service history is now easy to get.
Would they do the same thing to a LHD car that is weird to them like a Mitsubishi Eclipse? They seem to be in better condition there than they will ever be here
You guys helped set me straight, i bought a yellow NB2 miata for way too much for its worth, had to do a bunch of maintenance, and became car poor due to the constant maintenance. I was trying to use it as a daily while also working on my 03' bugeye project that i lost track of because i kept working on the damn miata. Sold it, lost money, went and bought a honda fit daily. Now i am not car poor.
Honda fit’s are fucking based , and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise . Without a reliable driver you have no ability to invest into any sort of project (while being mature)
@@carfriendsimulator9981 im realizing as I get used to the fit, it's extremely fun and parts are really easy and cheap to come by. I take the Miata as a learning experience because i have done almost everything you could do to a car other than taking engines and transmissions out. The fit is gonna be in my fleet for a long time.
The problem is that someone with a prisitine example will sell their car for a high price because it is a pristine example, then someone with a POS will ask an ungodly amount and all the other sellers with similar POS will ask the same thus raising the price of nicer models. Next thig we know prices are over inflated, cars are being unsold, and would be nuyers and new to the car game afficianados are walking away and being priced out of the hobby
The other thing social media car guys and shows always leave out is an old car is an old car. No matter what you fix or replace, you are always fixing and replacing something. Takes time, non of the builds you see is ever perfect

6:48 I totally agree with puchii here and 02’ really kinda is the last year of exciting jdm cars. Beyond that point, no more supra, r34, fd, s15. However, there are still some cool cars that aren’t legal yet, e.g Clio V6, FD2 Type R, EVO wagon, S2k and many more niche cool cars. But yea the import market will slowly stabilize eventually
I do wanna add that, being a guy that imported 4 cars himself, once the 25 year rule hype dies down, there are still good deals out there. Got my 32, 33 gtr and evo 5 for some really good prices. So my advice would be - do the import work yourself, not that hard and don’t import a car that just turned 25 years old if you are importing for “investment” and keep on looking for those deals
The 3SGE is much more desirable then the 5SFE. I have a 99 GT with the 5SFE and there is zero support, but having that 2.2L camry motor is definitly nice for keeping it stock. Absolutely zero power, but its a great drivers car for sure.
The 3S-GE on the 6th gen Celica makes around 170-180hp depending on the market/emission regulations. It's a fun little car. 3S-FE is the one with 120hp.
What’s crazy is 10 years ago when I was 12-13, the only affordable thing sporty cars around were 80s, 90s and early 2000s cars like a Toyota mr2, wrx, mustang fox body, civic SI or type R and now all those cars are coming up so much in value or really they are holding value, and better, more modern cars like a Mercedes c63 Amg from 2010 has come down to the same price. On of my dream cars since I was 13 is the 2015 jaguar f type. It was about $60,000 depending on what trim you got when they came out. Now I see them selling for $25,000. I feel blessed that my European cars I wanted are somewhat affordable but the Japanese cars I’ve always wanted are getting so hard to get in good condition anymore
Low mile, unmodified Evos can be a good import & flip. All 4 of them left in the world anyway. Best bet is to find some grandparent that thought they were buying a Lancer base model and got swindled into the Evo without knowing it.

I'm paying of a new '23 Forte GT. I know Kia has a bad rep for good reasons and it's still me buying a new car, but with a 1.9% APR at 4 years I have no issues paying the 413 a month to hopefully own this car for 10 years. It's fun to drive, I'm changing the oil and keeping it clean, and all I've "modded" is adding Enkei RPF1s and Michellin Pilot Sport 4s.
For those who are wanting to get a project car, please take this advice: 1) buy a car thats as common as grass, parts will be cheaper and much easier to find. 2) start with small repairs and keep It stock. You will keep it from becoming another lawn decoration. 3) budget and choose wisely. If you get an old car it’s going to need some type of repair, even if it’s super low mileage. Rubber deteriorates and gaskets do go bad. 4) Don’t thrash it, you’re not Don Torreto. You’ll fuck that transmission up sooner or later and if you can’t fix what you screwed up, then enjoy your newly acquired paperweight. Unless you’re rich, then do what you want. 5) There’s no “one and done” project. Bikes are easier to store than cars and are a lot more fun if speed is your poison.
im always about buying cars outright. As a college student, the 2008 honda fit i picked up may be a bit beyond my means. i had the money for the car, but nothing for the maintenance. i was desperately waiting for pay day that week *just* to put gas in my tank & purchase some filters from rockauto. i couldve haggled more & gotten it $250-500 cheaper, but I didnt. its nice to have full legal ownership of something, but its even nicer to not have to worry about paying for summer classes.
I bought a 96 Nissan leopard with 42k miles for $7000. It was already imported and the car was super clean. It also was one of the top trims with the vq30det. In my opinion it was an amazing buy. There is no American counter part and it’s pretty quick. I think it all depends on what u buy. Buy the car from the person who lost the money. Don’t import yourself
Importing is like modifying a car heavily. It's fine if you buy or do something because it's what you want, but don't delude yourself into thinking other people will pay the money you paid.
i sold my NA mx5 at the beginning of the year, that definitely helped me become less ''car poor'' the older i get the less interested i am in ''weird'' project cars that are hard and expensive to get parts for.
You're right that people dont want the base model, but the FE engine gets almost 30MPG so I see people gravitating toward it because gas is 3-4x higher than it was when that car came out.
I put $7k in "performance parts" on a 2017 base model ford focus. I recently replaced it with a 1997 Lexus LS400 that came with full service history, 163k miles.
Im learning this mistake right now. Bought a CRX in very questionable condition, and having to replace the majority of the suspension, and dealing with a questionable engine swap.. etc.
One tip i have on not being car poor by example: say you want a 1969 chevy nova or malibu or something and you see one that hasnt moved for 10 years, needs paint n body, interior is fked n it needs everything but its 2 grand. Not worth it do not restore it. Youd actually save money buying a running driving yet still imperfect one for around 10k and youll save soooooooo much money. Like for me i got my 69 nova for 4k body work was done, interior was done, suspension was done, and it was primered no motor no trans. Now its painted with a 6.0 ls all in like 15k also totoally worth having someone who knows their stuff build the motor.
As a car guy on my 30s don’t buy project cars until you got all figure out and you got money for a toy .. spent so much money on car payments and mods just wasted part of my life
The ending is on point…. Imo project cars should be paid off cars. Older cars you bought cash, every dollar after is at your discretion. These people building financed 2020 mustangs and bmws for 1000 hp are nuts if you ask me. Yea it’s hella fast, but probably financially crippling if you actually did all the supporting mods rather than just a power adder
8:15 Yeaaahh, Net's right about paying $10k+ for a 90's car that ain't worth that anymore. I've already pretty much given up on the idea I'll ever own a '95 Subaru WRX wagon, or a Toyota Sera. Two dream cars of mine. Figured I'd stick to what I can get. A '99 Impreza Outback Sport. The market and the economy is not great. Nothing is reasonably priced. Reality isn't kind, but it's best to be real with yourself.
Honestly talking about head turners, drive a fiesta ST. I have people next to me staring at my car, go to a meet and my car is surrounded because nobody's ever seen a fiesta st in person.
i have a 1994 Nissan President that i got for 5k with 59K miles and it now shuts off going into drive or taking turns too fast im lost on what i do at this point
I don't think *all* the cool JDM cars are gone, there's a lot of lesser known 2000's models that are cool imo, I may be biased but last year I got my '03 1jzgte crown wagon, which turbo crowns in either sedan or wagon form are exclusively from late 99-03 and are the cheapest way into a turbo JZ, well for now at least, and the last vehicles to get that engine. Around 8-10k USD on the low end landed. Or if you want a bit sportier the corolla-styled JZX110 Mark II, or Mark II Blit wagon if you wanna be weird. Put 40k on mine in the 12 months I've had er and couldn't be happier!
The joke about the dealership importing RHD Previa’s… I don’t know about other markets, but here in Vancouver they sell just fine. RHD Delica’s, first-gen Odysseys, Stepwgn’s etc. there’s always someone to buy it. If I had $12k and needed a family car, I’d take an RHD Odyssey before anything else.
I import cars and sell them. It’s not profitable anymore sadly unless you are a dealer. It’s minimum an extra 3500 on top of the cars price for customs, shipping, auction fees, etc usually even more. Prices are also too high in Japan. I do disagree with what you guys say about not being able to daily them. I daily my GC8 Ver 5 STI RA and have had zero problems I just take care of it. My old daily was a 95 R33 GTS25T and I also had no issues with that car. It just depends on what maintenance records you get with them. I love your videos and almost always agree with you guys but a lot of these old imports are VERY reliable and simple.
I purchased a '97 toyota townace noah to deliver mail out of and 2 years and 38k miles later its needed nothing but brakes, tyres, fluids and a battery.
I just imported a 97 silvia s14 Kouki Ks(sr20det), slick top, almost entirely stock except an s15 turbo, full interior, all factory panels, 70k miles, flawless.. was it expensive? Yes but it wasnt more than what people are trying to get on fb. We didnt get a lot of koukis in the US and almost every one is clapped, drifted, or rusted.. or all 3.. i plan to keep this car how it is, obviously wheels and suspension but just enjoying its beauty and turbo sounds is enough for me
Im going to buy my first car pretty soon, right now im looking at late ‘00s or early ‘10s corollas. Gonna daily that thing and treat it right, hopefully it will last me through school.
I got a steal on a 70k kilometer 97 hilux surf for 11k. It is 4x4. Does come with the gas 4cyl which i wish had a little more power but it’s honestly great. I daily it
I think using a base model car is based if you're going to swap out all of the important stuff anyways, but importing one seems absurd. You're spending extra money to cheap out...
@@carfriendsimulator9981 I meant if you're swapping the important stuff for things not available from the factory- who cares what trim of Civic you bought if you're LS swapping and stripping the interior
@@carfriendsimulator9981 Got me there- I've never swapped anything or stripped an interior. May as well start with the car that has less stuff to be thrown out, no? If you have experience doing swaps or extensive mods (straight piping is not "extensive") I'd love to hear your take on it. I don't mean that sarcastically, either.
Buy new or under warranty, keep it stock. Buy a car that doesn’t NEED mods, enjoy it and drive the hell out of it. Mods are a complete waste of money. Don’t finance over 5 years and stop trying to compulsively chase a feeling you’ve never felt.
I believe the 3S celicas are more desirable for simple modifications than the 5S, that’s why the ST has more desirability than the GT and GTS. It doesn’t matter much to me tho since I already have a broken GT-four in my garage that I overpaid for in 2021 haha
alot of imports especially from japan are in much better condition than shit you find in the states, with good maintenance (usually) and stupid low miles too. That alone makes them more desirable. Not to mention theyre usually cheaper too, just have to worry about rhd and insurance and youre good.

@@brandonmeensIdk man, I’m pretty sus of anything made after 2017 or so. Too many serialized electronic parts that you can’t replace or fix without forking hundreds/thousands to the dealership.

I bought a Fiero GT and never looked back. The sky is the limit with them, and my current Fiero gets a TON of attention.
I've seen plenty of people say, "You're not a real car guy if you drive regular traffic."
"You're not a real car guy if your car is stock."
I learned how to turn a wrench on my 2007 silverado classic. It was my graduation gift, and I couldn't be happier with it. Anyone who says that's not what it means to be a car guy just doesn't understand how some people can be happy with having a "good enough" car and money in the bank.
I am not a "car guy" but I am a guy who needs cars.
What I have learned is:
1.) all vehicles have problems it just depends what you are willing to put up with.

The 3S-GE on the 6th gen Celica makes around 170-180hp depending on the market/emission regulations. It's a fun little car. 3S-FE is the one with 120hp.
Y’all bring your cars to the East coast, we’ll lose our shit. Because all of our 90’s legends are rusted to shit and/or clapped by the young crowd

For those who are wanting to get a project car, please take this advice:
1) buy a car thats as common as grass, parts will be cheaper and much easier to find.
2) start with small repairs and keep
It stock.

As a car guy on my 30s don’t buy project cars until you got all figure out and you got money for a toy .. spent so much money on car payments and mods just wasted part of my life
im pretty sure the 3sge in the jdm 6th celica GTs was a beams engine, 170hp. same as what came in the altezzas and NA Japanese MR2s.
