    Garett’s comment about controlling your emotions and “not getting too high or too low” is more important than a lot of people realize. Often you’ll see the people who get the most happy/energized after winning a big pot are also the people who tilt the hardest. The more grounded you can remain on the upside helps you do the same on the downside.

    As he said, controlling emotions in poker is similar to controlling emotions in life, just as focusing on the correct decision making process at the table is much more important than the monetary aspect. Make good decisions at the table and in life, and long term, you will be where you want to be regardless of the outcome. “I go to the casino to make good decisions, not to make money”

    Andy not betting the river first was the main reason of his demise in this hand. Because Garett has so many hands in his range with king x kind of hands which will check back at a very high frequency. So a check raise in that spot doesn’t make much sense . If Andy just went all in river betting first it was much more likely to get through .

    From Andy's perspective: if Garrett had QT, he likely would've raised on the turn as it is a wet board. No 4 bet pre eliminated KK. No raise on flop eliminates any other set. Most likely hands Garrett calls 2 streets with and bets river are missed draws and value heavy hands. His less than 1/2 pot bet doesn't rep a bluff, therefore it is value. So which value? A mediocre lone king? Prob not. Some 2 pair combo is most likely here. Since I have all the nutted hands, I can credibly rep a river check to induce bluff and jam. So I do.
    From Garrett's perspective: does Andy check the river with any nutted hands when the flush draw misses and potentially miss out on value from any King (looks like I have one)? Very unlikely.
    If Andy has any nutted hands besides too set, he'd still bet river to extract value out of a K. Since he didn't, he probably just gave up on river. Now that I bet for value, only way for him to win is to check-jam. Not a snap call nor an easy call, but it's definitely leaning towards one.

    • @ExiTeCA
      @ExiTeCA 2 роки тому

      1. If garrets flats turn with QT it's most likely only with QT of clubs, but Andy blocks that hand so he can assume garret has no QT.
      2. Garrets range that calls 2 streets is mostly 2 pair, top pair, weak pair+draw, draw... Maybe occasional 99 that hits set on turn, but he doesn't have KK or JJ as he'd have 4bet them preflop.
      3. Against garret's range, it makes perfect sense for andy to check-raise river when he has a set or straight. When garret has 2 pair, he will call river but he will also bet it if checked to -> more value from check-raising. When garret has draw, he will not call river, but (maybe)bet when checked to -> more value from check-raising. He only loses value if garret has a top pair that will call the river bet, garret doesn't call 100% of his top pairs (probably only KQ, can discount AK as he'd 4bet it preflop).
      very credible line from andy, has all the KK,JJ & straight combos in his range imo (even 77 maybe) while bluff combos are hard to determine. don't think it's leaning towards a call for garret.

    I dont get the x/r. Why would QT x/r the river? It unblocks the top of Garrett's range and hence would go bet/bet/bet.
    KJ would be a much better hand to x/r for value. Most of Andy's x/r bluffs should be centered around pairs that block two pair and the straight like T9/Q9/QJ (x/r or call at different frequencies)... etc. Especially those that dont block the Qxcc combo draws. I understand that the pairs would likely check the turn but he has to fire some of them on the river as they have tons of equity (especially fold) (QJ might have too much showdown value so it might elect to check turn). Great call by Garett; dont get the bluff.

    I quite like Garrett's style of playing. He's a player that usually manages to sniff things out. Andy definitely had heart here; nobody could fault him for that. But given that this is a high stakes cash game, I really don't understand why there's a time limit. That was a $67,700 pot. They should be allowed to think however long they want.

    Andy is a heavy player and puts it to Garret a lot. Seen Andy with 2pair shove on Garret with nut flush and Garret folded. If this was a bigger money Pot I think Garret folds. That was a good call good read

      I feel as if he gave up the information right away when he told the dealer he was all in. The expression on his face did not seem too confident and the little twitch he made with his mouth told me that it was a bluff but it might be harder to notice it while across the table rather then having the cameras view up close on a player.

    andy's bluff doesn't really make sense imo. would QT take a bet-bet-check line on a board where 2 flush draws missed? highly doubt so... a lot of missed value out there, a nutted hand would just barrel river to extract value from any K pair.

      That's in an interview where he's being asked for his opinion on a hand he just played. On the other hand, Garrett spends so much of his time during actual play watching and listening to his opponents, he has absolutely elite observational skills. Likewise, he works hard to be gregarious at the table in order to maintain a good atmosphere for the rec players.
      Given all of the above, I'm not sure that we can claim that he's not a good (active) listener _away_ from the table. That seems rather unlikely to be the case, but neither of us have seen him interact with others away from the table. At least not recently, since I don't think Survivor counts at this point, even if you discount how artificial a setting that was. So, I guess I'm saying: maybe don't rush to that conclusion.
