I didn't find out about the hip till after gords diagnosis. I figured the hip was just another band... then I heard 50 mission cap. That started me down the road of every single song I could find. Then trying to find the meanings and the back stories. I love this band. In the 2 years I've been listening to them I feel myself becoming more aware of the the needs of others. The Hip has made me a better person. I wish I would have found them when I was younger.
There is a guy in Italy who discovered the Hip at the beginning of the pandemic and recorded some covers of their songs in Italian. They are lovely and the Hip talked about in the CBC interview for the Junos.
Oh that's awesome brother that's good to hear tragically is the type of band you never forget in my honest opinion they were one of the best bands of all time from Canada.
I can't listen to this without sobbing every time. It's my life. Has been for far too long. Even now... my eyes are burning as I type. This band is a gift.
I cant believe how much of an impact this man made on my life. Hearing about his diagnosis was like being shot in the stomach. But its strangely beautiful the way he gets to go out. Everyone gets to reflect with him.
I just watched Long Time Running and it Hits Me the same way excellent documentary and any fan of rock n roll music should see it NOT just fans of The Tragically Hip. Gordon Downie was the greatest performer and showman I ever had the pleasure of seeing almost every tour usually down in Texas driving from Shawnee Oklahoma to do so . I would never do that for any other rock band I LOVED. I am so glad to have seen them live in the USA small clubs such a killer band I think every show was well over 90 minutes with encores too. God Bless The Tragically Hip
I cry everytime i hear this. My sons Dad passed away last year and I'll never forget how much he loved this song and we loved the Hip. I remember sitting having a coffee listening to radio when we heard About Gord's diagnosis and we both looked at eachother and started bawling . Love you Jesse and you too Gordie RIP ♡♡
Well, now we're all going through something. Rest peacefully our dear Captain. We will LOVE YOU forever. Thank you so much Gord. You were the best. The BEST!!!!!
To think they were writing at this caliber, this late in the game... Just an amazing body of work. Radiohead, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon etc can suck it! THIS is incredible songwriting! RIP Gord I'm sorry the rest of the world couldn't see your genius. And the Johnny, Rob, Paul & Rob.. Best live act I've ever seen...and I'm an American! (PS: Make your wine, beer and cider available in the States. PLEASE!).
I would love to see the Hip do an instrumental only tour. I am sure it would be legendary in Canada, and I think Gordon would approve. The crowd would probably sing everything anyway.
Such an elegant frontman who was obviously comfortable in his role. He was a showman in and of himself, without the need to rely on any gimmicks or pyrotechnics or false personas. A shame we couldn't get more music from him, but we certainly do have a LARGE body of work to enjoy until the end of time.
It's a shame that so many Hip fans under rate this album or pretty much everything after the 90's. This is one of my favourite Hip song's, along with "Coffe Girl," "The Last Recluse," and "Morning Moon" from the same album
Love this song! And don't worry about "What if this song does nothing?". Believe me this song definitely did something for me and I'm sure for many other people out there. Thank you very much! LONG LIVE THE HIP!
HIP HIP HIP! Got my daily Hip fix. Saw the Hip three times on this tour. Dallas, Houston and Austin (whose motto is "Keep Austin Weird") and when Gordon went into the lines "Bring on the requisite strangeness/ It always has to get a little weird...a little weird" the audience exploded. Reel em' in Gord! and I hope it never ends! The Tragically Hip-the greatest band on the face of the Earth!
I just spent the better part of today watching Gord with tearful eyes my regret I never discovered them sooner or seen them live. Tragically hip are incredible and I can’t believe they aren’t known world wide.
@@nicholaswiebeck i found this song last fall shorty after my grandma passed away it had the same effect on me. i wanted to show others so, I put on the radio as we were driving to a friends cabin in Germany. they sat there in silence, i warned them it was a sad song, but they still wasn't prepared for it. proudly i can say i converted a few Europeans to hip fans
Marcus Weber that’s a great story! Wish I could try to get my friends to listen to the Hip, unfortunately they are content with the shit that gets the majority of radio time nowadays.
I grew with the Hip in their progression even if it took a few more listens to open my ears to Gord's genius. We Are the Same & World Container are favorites along with all he gifted us. "In a World Possessed by the Human Mind" may be perfect.
...and to that "little slice of heaven" that was with me in Austin, that intrepid young lady, I'll never forget you! You made this ol' man's heart beat faster every time that I looked into your eyes.
That song punch me right in the face when they started the show with it back on 2009 at the Metropolis in Montreal .... Gord is the only men who makes me cry ...
i hope to god that youtube comments can somehow travel through the ether so that gord fucking knows how much we miss him ♥ "are you goin' through something? 'cause i... i am too."
The depth of feeling and caged intensity coupled with tenderness in this song is incredible. In fact, the entire album is like this. Typical Hip -- the more you listen to it, the better it gets. The Hip are not a style over substance, all sizzle with no steak band.
This song has grown on me. The orchestration on the album version is excellent, and the final few minutes remind me of Beatles compositions from the 60s. No, I don't want to see how it ends, not for Gord.
It's kinda ironic because almost every Hipsong does something...they make ya think...what does Athabasca depend upon? Who is Hugh Maclennan and what did he do?(writer-one of Canada favorite sons) Hipsongs celebrate the wonder, mystery and diversity of life! LONG LIVE THE TRAGICALLY HIP!

Who is better than these guys?NOBODY. And the fact that they ARE Canadian makes them the BEST in my view. Sorry NiagaraWarrior, can't use Hip and "second" in the same sentence.
super ballsy of them to open shows with this on the 09 tour. talk about alienating a crowd with a NEW song, never mind a three part 9 minute affair.....my wife and I front row only ones belting out every word while the fairweather fans scramble in the lobbies to get their last beers.
the lucky few that got to listen to this song live should feel privileged
Just discovered this album, 14 years later. This is my favourite song.
It's a bit depressing...s
Mine too….my life in song
It's their only good song imo. But rock 95 overplayed most songs.
Gord gave me a set list. He was a wonderful person.

mark e you are just like the rest of the world. They are not well known, not sure if that’s a bad thing,. Just be happy you found them.

Smile on my face, yet tears.
hope you're doing ok
Ms.CanadaUSA ty for sayin. U gave me tears
Maybe the most underrated Hip song.
I love this song. Ballsy, to write something this long, being their longest, it has a good flow and comforts me to listen too.
+Steven Anticknap 💖
Glen Gratto you are wise amongst men.
Glen Gratto totally!
We'll be going back to this performance for decades... it just never let's me down...we get to see all parts of who Gord is here in this one.
Absolutely one of my favourite Hip songs. One of the most underrated in their collection
Less than 150,000 views, the world is missing out on one of the best rock band ever, Gord was gift that was never really opened.
I cry everytime i hear this. My sons Dad passed away last year and I'll never forget how much he loved this song and we loved the Hip. God I love this song…❤❤❤❤

Robbie's solo tone with that Gretsch and fuzz pedal is everything.
the last 4 minutes of this song is a musical masterpiece
*Last 9 minutes
the shifts in this song are incredible, aren't many songs that can take you on a ride like this
Rob Baker is fantastic
I would love to see the Hip do an instrumental only tour. I am sure it would be legendary in Canada, and I think Gordon would approve.
The crowd would probably sing everything anyway.
It doesnt get any better than this….LOVE it….you are so missed 😢
I feel blessed that I was alive when the hip was was with us and now will be forever more
This song is a masterpiece.
12 years ago and this is still so fucking epic. A live board-tap audio and it murders most top notch productions.
Such an elegant frontman who was obviously comfortable in his role. He was a showman in and of himself, without the need to rely on any gimmicks or pyrotechnics or false personas. A shame we couldn't get more music from him, but we certainly do have a LARGE body of work to enjoy until the end of time.

So great

Best live performer ever - Gord Downie - discuss.
Jeff Thomas Black no contest
Jeff Thomas Black No contest.
100%
Flawless...hands down the best live performance I have ever seen out of any band.
I am blown away😮❤️
Finally!!!!!!! My wife loves the HIP!!!! She finally hears it and she's hooked. Thank you, boys!!
Gordie's Tommy. There are songwriters, and there are poets. And then there are poets who wrote songs.
Best song EVER!
What a fucken showman. 👏🏻
All my love. ❤️
You know it girl...
@Tony Rampling Right back at ya, brother. 😊
Love this song! And don't worry about "What if this song does nothing?". Believe me this song definitely did something for me and I'm sure for many other people out there. Thank you very much! LONG LIVE THE HIP!

The Tragically Hip-the greatest band on the face of the Earth!
Just bought this album on vinyl while back in Canada - this is now one of my favourite tracks of TTH - absolutely outstanding...
Beautiful. Makes me cry every time ❤️💕
Where has this song been all my life?
Damn it just look at them and listen, just f ing glorious.
i dont think a performance can get better than this
One of my favourite Hip songs! God I miss Gord!
i cannot believe this was a decade ago.
RIP gord, you are truly missed back on earth
How can you dislike this. So fricken amazing. RIP Gord & forever love the Hip.
Truly a wonderful and treasured band
RIP Gord

I got to be alive while these guys were making this music , fuckin' EH ! :)
Holy cow. I could watch Gord all day.
And all night.
I just spent the better part of today watching Gord with tearful eyes my regret I never discovered them sooner or seen them live. Tragically hip are incredible and I can’t believe they aren’t known world wide.

This is the best. Robbie's fuzz tone at the end is so killer.
Need to listen to this song today - RIP Gord
Came here from The Skydiggers cover of Depression Suite: The Rock. Speechless all over again.
A melhor!!
So underrated ❤️ Hip Forever
I love this song so much. I can't listen to it enough.

Underrated song by a underrated band
Rest in peace, Gord. Miss you.
You're so special. Unreachable. My ideal.
BEST song EVER….♥️🌹🎩🪶
Never get tired of this song or this performance ! My absolute fav.
This, is Canada!
The depth of feeling and caged intensity coupled with tenderness in this song is incredible. In fact, the entire album is like this. Typical Hip -- the more you listen to it, the better it gets. The Hip are not a style over substance, all sizzle with no steak band.
"Typical Hip -- the more you listen to it, the better it gets" That sums up their whole career
Not true. Tell that to rock 95 barrie. Coulda loved the tragically hip without that hey dude if you're Canadian you like this vibe.
Tears God im going to miss ya Gord
Perfection!!
Miss ‘em
7:38 When camera production doesn't know what a guitarist doing a solo looks like. - First I hear of this suite - amazing!!

I love this fucking band
I hated the hip till a year before Gord's death. I was fucking devastated. This is my favourite song of all time. R.I.P Gord.

NewOrleansWorld
Gimme gimme gimme gimme-gimme
Gimme an opportunity gimme-gimme
Put me put me put me put me-put me
In the saddle I'll ride you'll see
There's new work in the Day Room
I can't lounge on-line
Don't you laugh
I'd sell a giraffe and I'd give you half
Just to occupy my mind
I'll be driven my eyes always moving
I'll be riveted to the task yea
No smiling! That's important
I will make my face a mask
And I'm thinking just in passing
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing
Working in the new NewOrleansWorld
I'm emptying slots working like a ghost
I move through huge rooms with no windows
And no Gulf of Mexico
Gimmegimmegimme gimme-gimme
Gimme an opportunity gimme-gimme
Put me put me put me put me-put me
In the saddle please
I'll be driven my eyes always moving
I'll be riveted to the task yea
No smiling! That's so important
I will make my face a mask

What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing
What if this song does nothing
Don't You Wanna See How It Ends?
Bring on the requisite strangeness
It always has to get a little weird a little weird
Yea you just bring on the requisite strangeness
Bring it on then disappear disappear
Go to be a man of the boom
To Florida without the ocean
But
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
When the door is just starting to open?
When Athabasca depends?
Don't you wanna see how it ends
I can hear you
But I can't stay here
You left me lost in the Barrens
You left me born on the stairs
It's minus 11
Inside my kettle
I didn't come to get lost in the Barrens
I didn't come to settle
To be a man on the moon
To get my little slice of heaven
Yeah
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
When the door is just starting to open?
And Athabasca depends
Doncha wanna see how it ends
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
The door is just starting to open.
Athabasca depends.
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
Yeah
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
I'm holding the door to the Barrens
And Athabasca depends
Doncha wanna see how it ends?
Thank you so much!
RIP BIG GUY!!!
Gord was an absolute genius ..this record was their best imo..rip
2009 Hip. The metamorphosis is complete, fully.
Thanks
I’m back! I knew I would be.
Gord.... bring this voice back on Tour with you... please
This is a stunning performance. If this is truly #2 on the setlist it is remarkable that they played a 9 min suite that early. Incredible

Gord Downie
Play this in DC next week, please? I love it.
my very favorite
Was never huge on this song, but man I was missing out.
Beautiful.
I miss you Gord. And I’m sad to see how it ended.
I Always Think Of Them💎💘
Really great song with an interesting origin. Thanks for sharing it #courageforGord
what is the origin of the song?
GOD, I just LOVE Gord!
Can't wait till the hip come back to Victoria!
I am too. Missing you Gord.
To many fans crying about how the Hip got old and changed ,but so did their fans at the same time.
Please play this song in Kingston. I hoped for both shows in Van. Please
this is so awesome
