And why can't everyone on UA-cam make succinct videos like this! Thanks Jeremy, nice! No Vlog, no BS commentary about the current weather and what you had for dinner last night, no camera pointing at the wrong thing....etc... TY!
Right on! I hate vlogs and all that useless chatter. Last thing I want to do watch some guy riding around and prattling on about stuff. Get to the point.
This how you do instruction videos. Period. Regarding oil quantities, use what is close to recommendations, and check level on dipstick after you run the bike for a while. Then top off if needed. Nothing more to it! Thanks!
Hi Jeremy, just purchased my first XR 650 after owning two KLR's. Thanks for the oil change tip, looking forward to doing some exploring on the XR this year with my Buds. Thanks. Ron W, from Canada
It's a good idea add new oil into the new oil filter before reassembly. Hold the filter to the same angle as when it would be installed and add oil until it is full at the correct angle. Then reinstall. I do this with all my motorcycles.
Yeah I agree, the best video on this bike's oil change. The few others I watched are just horrible, don't even know why they would publish them. Thanks
Great video! i have one question, any response would be much appreciated. Does the oil get filtered directly out of the chassis before entering the crankcase?
ok thankyou Jeremy that makes sense,I think I will use the recomended Honda GN4 10-40 oil,im currently using spectro in my BMW Boxer,I like to use what the manufacturer recomends
Hi Mad G Force , I can’t recall who makes that one but there are several companies that have developed one. Try using the search term “rally fairing” on google. Read old forum posts at advrider and thumpertalk and I think you’ll find the info you’re looking for. Ride safe! Congrats on the bike
Great video! Thanks! Just bought my XR650R. What lighting kit do you have on yours? Mine is a Baja Designs and the previous owner has it all messed up. Need a new kit.
I left it out as it's not in the manual and I personally never found anything wrong in there after 20k miles of oil changes. Good to check it every 3-5 changes though.
Just had an odd idea, maybe could help for waiting for the oil to fill up, could you put a straw in the oil past where it is causing a vacuum? To let it breathe freely and it would just shoot on in without having to wait...? Or just wait... don't waste your perfectly good straws people.
I had over 20k miles on both engines in that bike and my rebuild was NOT caused by lower end issues or oil flow issues. My advice is to: - Use a magnetic drain plug if you might not keep up with oil maintenance. (Never the aluminum one) - Add a case saver if you might not keep up with chain maintenance - Add a skid plate if you might ever bottom the bike out on a pointy rock - Add brush guards if you ever plan on ripping through the trees (hand protection) - Add a oil temp gauge if you drive deserts or hot stuff - Weld a plate on the bottom of the kick stand if you might stand it in soft stuff - Get an aftermarket seat if you plan on long trips - Get standing pegs and a handle bar lift if you plan long trail trips
10w40 0r 20w50 are you using mobil 1 auto oil. And if semi synthetic oil I used can I still use regular 10w40 if meets standards of Jaso T 903 MA) SAE ) API SG or higher. Whats that all about. Bike shop said if I used semi of full synthetic, clutch will burn up if I go back to non semi ? help if you know some.
twing21able Mobil make Mobile 1 full synthetic V-Twin 20w-50 (made for wet clutch motorcycles)...perfect for big air cooled thumpers or a 650r with 6k miles on it...
Larry its a fiberglass and gel coat RallyRaid rally fairing for an xr650. It will be an international order with hefty shipping and requires the light hole cut out which is a bear without the right tools. RallyRaid is easily found in a search engine. Ride safe.
The manual states every 2000mi or 6 months, whichever comes first. If the bike has added mods which make it run hotter, or the miles are hard trail miles rather than street miles you should change it more frequently @ 1000mi-1500mi. After you've owned it for a while, you'll find that shifting stiffens up around 1000-2000mi and you'll start to miss gear shifts. That is a great indicator that it's time to change the oil. At the very least for someone who doesn't ride much, change it at the beginning of motorcycle season.
I change it every 1,000 miles with Rotell T6 5w40 oil (yes, it's "diesel" oil). The manual says every 2,000 , but I do 1,000 to ensure longer engine life
Tough call. The owner's manual doesn't mention it but some shop manuals do. There is a need for locktite, breaker bar and torque wrench. I checked mine about every 3 oil changes and found nothing each and every time. There is always the chance that you could find some gunk there, but it shouldn't be enough to restrict the flow of oil. If you're rebuilding a bike that was sitting for ages that might be a different story and hopefully you're not using you tube videos to walk you through it.
The other thing I noticed after looking at the bike is the downtube drain bolt (removed in video) sits right about at screen level. The flow of oil running past it should pull some of the bigger chunks right off the screen if there are any.

Best oil/filter change video on UA-cam for the XR650L Period!!
Thank you for the no nonsense instructional video. Straight and to the point, just like it should be. Thanks!
Clear, concise, and valuable information in 3 minutes. Why can't other UA-camrs do that?
Thanks Jeremy ! Great Video, short and to the point!

Nice video ... Well done and it provides a simple review of how to change oil on the Honda XL 650 R.
It's a good idea add new oil into the new oil filter before reassembly. Hold the filter to the same angle as when it would be installed and add oil until it is full at the correct angle. Then reinstall. I do this with all my motorcycles.
Great vid, thank you sir! I am #1 fan of

Thanks for the simple yet very informative video, appreciated!
Great tutorial, thank you Jeremy!
Yes, shifting with bare feet is so enjoyable...
Great video! i have one question, any response would be much appreciated. Does the oil get filtered directly out of the chassis before entering the crankcase?
Cool video thanks. i have those same riding boots very comfortable.
ok thankyou Jeremy that makes sense,I think I will use the recomended Honda GN4 10-40 oil,im currently using spectro in my BMW Boxer,I like to use what the manufacturer recomends
Rotella T6 5w40 is a better choice.
Mobil V-Twin 20w-50 full synthetic for big thumpers...
thanks dude, quick easy video.
Awesome video, thank you for posting it :)
Hi nice vid. Just bought a used 2008. No manual of course so this helps. Question, who makes the tall windscreen. Thx G

Jeremy S thx again for more good info. G
Nice job sir. Helpful.
Great video! Thanks! Just bought my XR650R. What lighting kit do you have on yours? Mine is a Baja Designs and the previous owner has it all messed up. Need a new kit.
Good Job my friend, I need check the quantity on my XR650l 2008 I think is the same quartes.
Vey nice and instructive video.Thanks.
Theres a gauze filter assembly with the oil pipe in front.Needs to be cleaned as well
I left it out as it's not in the manual and I personally never found anything wrong in there after 20k miles of oil changes. Good to check it every 3-5 changes though.
Perfect!!

What do you think about that magnetic drain plug? Is it really necessary if you change the oil frequently?

How often do you change the oil screen?
Why does the oil go into the frame?

I kantSpel provided accurate info.
do you check oil level by screwing the dip stick in all the way or just drop it in and check there ???
Just drop in up to the threads dont screw it down.
@@crazyrebl Thanks I was hunting for that tip!
Good.
You just forgot to clean the oil filter on the frame....
how often,or how many miles should we change the oil on these bikes?

Isn't there a screen at the bottom of the downtube? Shouldn't that be checked as well?

hold 2.3 qt
Oil number ?????????
Beware of filters that are stamped with instructions to put filter in backwards. I ruined my engine.
Cuantos litros lleva ?
lmgtfy.com/?q=Honda+xr650l+liters+oil
XR650L: 2.3 liters (2.4 US qts)
2 qts = 1,9 L
Quick,fast,hurry lol
