It's so counter productive to use pain on an animal for training. My father raised dogs my whole life and just like the horse he explained that when an animal is put in pain for not complying it just makes them flustered and incapable of registering the proper commands being given. That horse was clearly in pain, startled, trying to turn around to see what was hurting over and over (the opposite of the goal) Obeying the reigns was the only thing preventing the horse from turning and eventually sure panic had it go and that is NOT the horse being trained, just willing to risk the pain in the water to escape the pain on land.

The most angry I've ever seen my horse riding instructor was when during a gymkhana, a younger inexperienced rider was struggling to get their lazy horse to move, and an older rider (about 14) moved up behind the horse (who was also known to have whip-related trauma, to add insult to injury) and gave it a hard smack with a riding crop. She was absolutely furious, and stopped the entire event to explain just how cruel and dangerous that was, to both the horse and the two riders involved. To see the behaviour of an arrogant 14 year old reflected in an OLYMPIAN is truly embarassing and upsetting.

    • @lsmmoore1
      @lsmmoore1 2 роки тому +17

Speaking of arrogant 14-year-olds, I also witnessed such around a horse. It was a carriage horse on a high school field trip, and the boy walked directly behind the horse. I told the boy not to walk behind the horse because I'd read in books that you shouldn't do that because it will scare the horse, and the boy's response was "I'm not scared" and an utter refusal to listen to me. As if it was HIS fear that was the issue rather than the horse's fear. Of course, had I been the teacher rather than a fellow classmate, he'd likely have listened - and then grumbled behind the teacher's back. As it is, the teachers did nothing about that and I was the only one speaking on that matter.

@@lsmmoore1 Once witnessed a person crouch down behind a New Forest Pony (so, somewhat wild) and touch its hind leg. As expected, they got kicked in the face. To this day I wonder just what they were trying to achieve by doing that. People's stupidity around animals that could certainly kill them is baffling.

@@flatwoodsdaemon From what I see, it's just like a certain group of people's stupidity about COVID protections and vaccines. they make it about THEIR fear (or purported lack thereof) and not about, y'know, being considerate of others. And just like with the COVID thing, this could get other people hurt too (in this case if they get injured by the horse trampling around in fear).
And I can rest assured some people are just as stupid about dogs too - to the point where someone will be like "my dog loves kids" and be all shocked when the dog bites another kid who didn't do anything - which it might if different kids had harmed that dog in the past and got away with it. Doesn't matter if the kid the dog bit this time was just walking past and not being particularly impulsive.
It's just lucky that the time I was that kid who got caught in the crosshairs of such a dog attack, I came away without a scratch because I had enough of a "way with animals" to give the dog pause. But I bet other kids weren't so considerate, and were allowed to get away with being rough with that dog. And then lady is all shocked pikachu face when that dog attacks a different kid who didn't do anything.

If calling out and ending the normalization of abuse is going to be the downfall of equestrian sport - that is EXACLTY what is wrong with equestrian culture. And if we keep giving people the out that "everyone does things different" NOTHING will get better. These methods exist because we have been taught for generations that its ok, or that it is necessary. As a professional trainer I can not begin to tell you the amount of abuse I see just because someone does not know any better or has been taught to do it. And at some point minding your own business and not saying anything is just as damaging as participating in the abuse.

I have been in a similar situation unfortunately. I used to be part of a drill team and while practicing a head-on line pass, my horse got insecure and would break the line and scoot sideways.
The 'leader' wanted to work on this. One of the things she said to me "if he can't do it at a trot he won't do it at a walk" which.....makes 0 sense. Should be the other way around. I had 90% of the 'team' yelling "kick kick kick" to keep my horse straight.
Needless to say I was getting upset, my horse was stressed and nothing the 'leader' wanted me to do was working.
So I said, "i need a break" and straight up rode out of the arena and rode home.
This 'leader' also insulted me and my horse saying that I needed a shank bit because my horse didn't stop good enough - according to her. (I was using a snaffle at the time) She eventually convinced the entire team to use shank bits on their horses...so next practice I showed up in a bitless bridle, and my horse was on fire. He did everything perfectly. I rode right by this 'leader' and the look on her face....my god, if looks could kill. Lol
After that I quit the team.

I had a friend who was great at explaining why her riding wasn't abusive to the horse...
We had so many fights, because I didn't see it her way, I didn't care about her explanations.
I watched the horse, and what it said..
I use the horse as a guide to success. If you listen, it will tell you how to ride it.
One thing they had done, was to work it in a harness, which they had way to tight, teaching the horse that release was in tucking its head in, and avoiding the bit, then they couldn't understand why the horse was so difficult to collect..
If you ride with a bit that bothers them or hurt, or your hands hurt them, then how can you expect a horse to be willing to trust the connection thru a bit?

Then there's me who got kicked out of a barn because the barn was having economical problems and the trainer wanted me to buy the pony I always rode (I was the only one who rode her without dying because she was abused in her past and everyone got bucked off her for whipping her etc except me who understood her and never treated her bad... Fun fact not so fun she was abused even from my trainer), but I didn't have the money to buy her so yea, I got kicked out of a barn for not having money to buy a pony💁🏻‍♂
Now that I think of them I'm just happy I'm not there anymore for all the horses I saw being abused and that the pony I rode got bought by a little girl who loves her and took her away from the barn

I used to work on a horse ranch, one of their mares had a badly cracked hoof, so they had a farrier come out. The owners were out-of-state for a competition so I was monitoring the farrier. He seemed friendly enough and did a few of the horses, but when it came to the mare with the cracked hoof she was jerking her leg away because it hurt. She did this several times before he ended up kicking her 3 times really hard in the ribs. I was probably about 15-16 at the time and I just started seeing red. I kicked him off the property told him to get out of here, and that I would not accept that type of behavior from him. (I probably said it with a lot more emotion and cursing), but he left and I told the owners when they got back what happened. I was absolutely disgusted, and even as a kid I wouldn't stand for blatant animal abuse it always pissed me off so bad.

    • @emilka2033

Who tf kicks a horse in the ribs? Like, besides the obvious point that it's morally abhorrent to do so, wouldn't they be scared of getting kicked/stomped by a 1,000+ lb horse!? People that do stuff like that have it coming.

    • @mavery9876
      @mavery9876 2 роки тому +8

@@emilka2033 The mare in question was extremely friendly. Even when she jerked away she barely did so. An when he kicked her she just tightened up and stood there. I'm not gonna lie I was hoping she'd kick the crap out of him. She didn't and I didn't hesitate in putting him in his place, and kicking him off the property. There don't need to be 'professional' farriers around that openly abuse horses in front of children/teens that are learning to work with horses. I'm lucky enough that I knew what abuse was ever since I was a young child and even back then anything sketchy going on I called out without hesitation. It's a sad day when a young child knows better than an adult about what abuse is, and how it can affect an animals behavior. To know that this man is probably still a farrier or has done this to other horses gets my blood boiling. I'm just happy he was stupid enough to do it in front of me so I could alert the owners of the farrier they hired. I had to quit not long after, so I'm hoping they didn't use him again. The mare was just way too friendly and sweet to be treated like that.

I remember calling out a 'trainer' with my horse after she hit him with a rope. I heard the hit from easily across the arena over the chatter of other people, so it wasn't a soft hit to nudge a horse. And then I saw her do it again, so I stormed over and told her off. She made up some excuses like he stepped on her foot (mind you, the same horse stepped on my foot and I didn't whack him, but made him back-up which he hates more), and I wasn't having any of it. But that wasn't the worst of it. Grown adults who watched her hit my horse, told me I was being immature and sensitive, said that I should've just stayed quiet and not interfered, including my own father (thankfully my mum had my back that day). This trainer on the same day, also used a Clint Anderson scare tactic on a horse that was already a nervous wreck. I stayed with that group for a few more weeks as those weeks they had a different trainer, one I liked and who helped me gain trust in my horse, but when the abusive trainer returned, I quit the group and made it very clear why I was leaving.
The last time I heard, they still had the 'trainer' working for them. I never regret standing up for my horse and am glad I was brave enough to stand up for him then. And I hope other young people, and even older people who see abuse, find their courage and speak out against animal abuse, even if people tell them to remain quiet.

When I was 14 I was beaten up in school by three girls, they fractured my skull and shattered my nose on one side and broke the other. They did this because my friend who I was walking with said something quietly like please mind your manners after they barged us into the wall of the school corridor as they walked past . There way no talking just the impact from the blow they kicked a door in my face, tthere was no build up and I remember being on my knees with blood pour down my face not being able to see looking up at these screaming shouting shadows and saying please it wasn’t me I didn’t say it it was my friend.
The fact that I said that horrifies me , I understand I was injured, I understand I was bloody scared , but I had always been able to stand up for others and here I was pleading not to be hurt anymore and unintentionally throwing my friend under the bus. I never thought I would ever say such a thing. The point I’m making… badly is you never know how you will react in a situation until you’re in it . This girls actions wasn’t to get her horse hit she just didn’t know how to deal with, it’s easy looking in and judging and looking back and think you should have I would have is easy until it happens to you, please be compassionate to the person who didn’t hit the horse and save the judgment for the one who did.

A lunge line in proper hands is an extention of your hands. A horse is WAY bigger than a person, and using hand signals to direct a horse doing groundwork sometimes requires your hands to be longer so they can even see you.
A lunge line is NOT a bludgeoning device. At most, it should be a gentle touch, like placing your hand on their shoulder to give cues. At least, it should be a long noodly wiggling finger to point the way.

This reminds me so much of a situation I had with a previous trainer. I used to help a woman out with her horses that she bought to train and resell, and in turn for riding the ponies (since I'm a pretty short adult) she would be my trainer each ride (which I obviously thought was a great deal). However, she kept putting me in dangerous situations and she would always blame the horses for misbehavior (most likely caused by stress or fear, many of these horses had problems when they came to her) and would sometimes even hit them. She once hit a 2 year old 10+ times as hard as she could because he would not stand still. I eventually got enough and stopped helping her, and I know that others who have spoken out about her have been slandered and she will say that THEY were bad people who did not behave around the horses and were kicked out (even when they left on their own because of her). The biggest problem is that she is quite well known in my country and does compete at a high level in cross country, and I feel like if I speak out nobody would believe me and she would say that I was the one hitting the horses et cetera. Chloe is so brave for speaking up, and I wish I could do the same and would if I only had the footage.

The first and only time I've ever had a dressage lesson, I was about 19 and still new to the equestrian world. The lesson horse was a super sweet mare and when I was just leading her, the instructor apparently didn't think she was walking fast enough and immediately hit her with a whip and preceded to yell at me the entire lesson. I was so sickened, I ended up going home and just crying. I was turned off from dressage for 5 years after that and I wished I said something back then. It's disgusting but it happens so much and many people are afraid to say something.

Things like this remind me of the barn I basically grew up at. There was this one horse who was incredibly head shy and would become aggressive when trying to bridle her, clean her face or really anything to do with getting close to her face. To me as a small child this was ‘scary’. One day I called over the barn owner for help because I was too short to be able to bridle this horse because of her swinging her head in what I now know is fear. Barn owner came over with a crop and started hitting this poor mare across the face. I was never again afraid of that horse but couldn’t imagine the fear that poor sweet girl was in. Also the immediate reaction of her whipping her face lead me to believe that wasn’t the first time she did that. Doesn’t leave much to the imagination about why that mare was so head shy. Needless to say I haven’t been at that barn for almost two decades…

This is the first I’m hearing of this happening, but I’ll bet Chloe is getting all kinds of hate for “letting” Dude beat her horse. They will defend that asshole and say it’s all her fault or that she should get just as much blame for “allowing” it to happen.
She is young and he is supposed to teach and mentor her. We are all taught at a young age not to question adults. “They know what they’re doing”. “They’re more skilled and are smarter than you”.
Which is all complete bullshit and is something we need to stop teaching our kids. If they feel they are being mistreated, they have every right to speak out without the fear of punishment. They can speak out against an adult in a respectful manner and will still be treated like they are a bad person.
Then as adults, the parents don’t understand why their kid doesn’t speak up and defend themselves. Or let people use them as a doormat or get into relationships in which they get treated like crap. It’s all they know.

This is so important to talk about, because it happens everywhere. Thank you for this!
Okay, storytime. When I was in my teens I had this favourite horse at the riding school I learned at and my trainer would always let me ride him, because he knew we worked well together. His name was Nanno and he could be quite naughty, but he mostly behaved with me. One time one of the nice middle-aged women from my riding group asked me to swap horses, because she had only started riding a few years before that and didn't feel comfortable riding the horse she was assigned to that day. I agreed and promptly Nanno ripped himself loose from her the moment she took him out of his stall. Nothing dangerous happened, because the barn was empty of other people (except me) and he also just walked into the next best open stall to get to another horse's food. That was one of his antics he used to do from time to time. So the nice woman went after him and got him out, but when she wanted to step out of the barn another woman, who had her own horse boarded at that facility, came up, ripped the lead rope out of the nice woman's hands and hit Nanno in the face with a lot of force. I was so shocked, but fortunately the nice woman was not as socially anxious as I am and called that b-word out for it. She just said she knew better, because she had been in the sports longer than us and had her own horse while we were only schooling horse riders who don't know what they're doing. We reported her to our trainer and he had a talk with her, because a) that is not how that facility trains their horses and b) she had no business reprimanding a horse that wasn't her own.
I had a few situations with her over the years where I saw her blatantly abusing and beating her own horse. Poor fella. She still has him as far as I know. I will also never understand how she was seen as one of the best at that facility. She literally once said to me "groundwork is completely overrated". Like wtf???
A few years after that first incident I actually bought Nanno and once he had one person he could concentrate on, he let go of all of his naughty antics. Still, there is this one incident I regret not standing up for him to this day. With the same b-word, because who else? He had a wound on his withers from the rough material of his blanket the first winterI owned him and he was so uncomfortable with people touching it he would bite and kick until you let him be. One day when I came out of the tack room I saw this woman trying to look at his wound and then blatantly beat him in the face and scream at him that she only wanted to help when he tried to bite in her direction. I was so shocked I waited until she was gone and then went to him and cuddled him and apologized. I mean, of course I did not let him kick and bite me either, but I would never beat him, even less in the face. Also I never asked that woman to take a look at the wound.
A few days later one of the other boarders offered his help and then went with it as calm as humanly possible and Nanno actually let him look and even put salve on the wound. He helped me a few times after that and I never had a problem like that with my horse ever again. I still feel like I failed him in that moment, but I was just too shocked and anxious to say something. A few months later we moved to another facility with less idiots. Unfortunately Nanno died 2 years ago from cancer. I still miss him every day.

One night at my old barn me and my friends were jumping our horses . I had asked my trainer if they wanted to jump my horse one or two times. They said yes and got on ,by the second jump my horse was very excited she is a Arabian and loves to jump so she sped up. The trainer did not like this so they proceeded to run my horse in circles over that jump and it was not safe for her . So I told them to get off my horse but they didn't. So I started crying ran out of the arena. When I came back they were still on my horse she was completely covered in sweat and was breathing hard . They had the audacity to call what they did training , by running a horse until they couldn't run any longer. I told them never to ride my horse again and left that barn a few months later.
Also I know this is not the worst thing that can happen but it really upset me. It wasn't they're horse and they only had permission to jump a couple of times not run my horse until she couldn't breathe

I used to work at the FEI for a couple of years and I witnessed first hand the absolute privilege and protection olympic and/or international riders benefit from. They are never held responsible for their actions!
Whenever there was an "accident" much like this one where a well-known rider would lose his/her temper and abuse their horse, the whole FEI would initially be buzzing with outrage but, the very next day, it'd be water under the bridge and PR would issue statements relating the rider's apologies and regret, immediately followed by a list of all their merits.
And whenever I would try to open up the conversation about the incident again, it was quickly shut down by concerns for that "poor rider, who loves their horses deeply and would never have treated them like that had they not been under extreme stress, blablabla". And I'd be like, yeah I get it, we all do things we're not proud of sometimes. But, no matter the excuse, we should still be held accountable, otherwise the horse's welfare in this industry will always be second to the rider's !!

I've experienced equine abuse at my old barn at 9-13 years of age. Looking back, those were severely traumatizing experiences and they sure were the main reason I've stopped riding horses, because at some point I was too afraid of what would happen to them if they didn't do what I asked them for. I was also afraid for the sake of myself. My riding instructor was BAD. He used to scream at his students and told them (we talk about children here!) to whip their horses. Of course the animal would be in severe pain and therefore start acting out, while the child - and it unforunately happend to me too - would experience anxiety, sitting on a incontrollable horse (we also didn't get taught how to handle a panicking horse correctly). Way too often, my instructor, who was a very tall and probably heavy man, would sit on those small ponies to "correct" their behaviour by hitting them with a whip, forcing them to walk in tiny circles while ripping their mouth open. It was horrific. And while we all knew it was wrong and deeply felt bad for what he did to those poor animals, nobody could ever speak out. I still feel guilty for not saying anything. It's right and important that you speak out about horse abuse. Thank you so much.

Thank you for giving Chloe a platform to speak from! I also have been in a situation like this. I was 10yrs old though. I brought my Arab mare to a clinic given by a different trainer but I was just there to learn different training techniques and see what different trainers did. My mare is very good on the ground and I have grown up riding her. She has taught me a lot but is in NO WAY dangerous to be around. The trainer walked up to my horse and said “Arabian huh” I said “yes”. Immediately after that he asked me to have my horse back on(while on the ground). It was a different technique than my mare has been taught so she didn’t respond immediately but was thinking about it and going to respond correctly soon. The trainer grabbed the lead rope from me forcefully and physically shoved me aside and then began beating my horses face with the metal lead rope clip. It was attached to her halter but he still was still aggressively beating her for no reason and only stopped when my horse took quite a few steps back. After that he said that he wouldn’t let any kids around her because she was a dangerous horse. (Because of her breed). I couldn’t do anything because I was in so much shock and stress but luckily my mom was there to say that that wasn’t ok and was able to get us out of there before anything else happened. She later posting this story to get awareness out for other people thinking of going to him. This is the mare that I could at the time ride in a halter with no lead rope and no saddle and still have control. I can now ride her in a neck rope most of the time. She was( and still is) absolutely great around kids. That was 4 years ago now. I still haven’t been to any other clinics and definitely won’t be going back to that trainer and I tell people about my experience if they are thinking about going to him or a trainer that I know has the same system. It will take a while for me to trust myself again to let another trainer near my horses but once I do I will still be very careful. Again thank you for giving Chloe a platform to speak from. More people need to be talking about the abuse from trainers in general but especially well respected trainers. The trainer I am talking about is Kerry Kohn. I know some people that have liked how he trains but I can’t just let my horse be beaten at all but especially for no reason.

If he has advocated to be a kind and patient trainer, using gentle and encouraging methods, you wouldn't expect this treatment..
She didn't expect him to hit her horse, she could feel something wasn't right, she trusted this trainer, and he misused it.
The horse was behaving very well, and with the right encouragement, it would do wonderful, instead it will now remember what happened when it comes to this jump, it probably still trusts her, but it will be even more difficult to make it comfortable approaching and doing this jump now..

I love that ending message! It's so easy to get locked into that fear that because you didn't speak up at the time, everyone will hate you for that and you're at fault. Hating on people for their past trauma only furthers abuse by making them even more afraid to speak up about it. I see so many good kids pushed into corners by trainers and even parents. They're ruined by other people's greed but that doesn't make them at fault. It's time to be understanding of that so we can break the cycle! Awesome video!

Hey I know you probably won’t read this comment but you NEED to react to Horsetariner3 you can find them on tiktok, they are super abusive and need to be stopped, I am very sad to see that, they should not be around horses at all, I just think that you need to check them out and talk about how disgusting they are and abusive, it makes me cry to see 5heir videos getting comment like “ cool “ and lots of likes, I just think you need to react to them and maybe give them advice on how they can do better, I don’t have hope that they can fix horses that don’t trust them, or themselves, I think they need to quit and give their horses to a better home where they can be happy, just please consider reacting to them?

I was having dejavu from this video. My trainer did the same thing to my gelding when he would stop at water he would come from behind and start beating my horse with a whip until he would go in. He was also an Olympic rider. This was such the norm across all the trainers I never recognized this as abuse until I got older. It was a basic idea of the horse is more afraid of getting beat than jumping in the water. 🙄

I worked for the National Trainer for the National team for Pony riders, so teens aged 13 to 16 that compete at top level, heights of 1.20 to 1.35 meters.
I didn't stay long because there were two instances of cruelty to animals that was so shocking to me that I lost all respect for the man.
1 was after a lesson, I was sitting on my own horse, which had a long rein and he was playing with his bit. Annoying sound wise, but he was standing completely still. This trainer was talking to me about how my lesson had gone, and he suddenly took his fist and hit my horse in the head. (To add to the severity of that, when i got my horse it had taken me a year before he trusted me to handle his head without a headcollar).
2 was trying to load a sale horse into a horsetrailer. I was leading him in, and went under the front support (because otherwise I would have been squeezed painfully, it is a normal practise) and then the horse flung himself backwards. The horse wouldn't go up the ramp again, so the trainer took over handling the horse, and told me to "throw gravel at the horse so that it will go into the trailer". My aim suddenly became very poor....
It was a horrible experience working there, the horses only had an hour or two of turn out a week(!!) and the stables were tiny. My horse, which I had worked hard to gain the trust of and get to have a calmer mindset, got extremely stressed and unhappy. I'm so glad I left although I feel bad for the horses, and all the impressionable kids that didn't see him for the as***le he was. He was/is so respected, and it makes me sick.

Did you take your horse with you? I'd feel horrible if he was staying there. And there was no reasons to punch your horse on the head. Poor thing!! I'm feeling bad for the horses there.

First thing - Mark was wrong to keep getting this rider to go through the water over and over and over. The horse was worried about the water. Introducing the horse to it in a quiet, supportive way, and doing it maybe twice, then leaving it at that (without any of that whipping!) would've been a good positive learning experience. No wonder the horse started refusing when he was made to do it non-stop. I would've refused too!
I've also had an instructor tell me to whip a horse for refusing to go through water. I refused. I got my horse into the water by letting her stand there, talking nicely to her, patting her, letting her know it was ok if she had doubts, because I was listening. After a few minutes she decided walking through the water was ok, and she did it. I thanked her, gave her a treat, let her stand and relax for a while. Then she went around and she trotted through it without hesitation. Great! I finished the riding there for that day.
Beating a horse to get them in, means everytime they come to a water jump, they remember being beat, and their anxiety skyrockets! They're still scared of the water but also scared of being whipped! Your horse has to trust you, and beating to get that trust doesn't work. Sometimes you do have to be firm, but whipping is not that. Mark was wrong.
