I never knew any of those guys, but thanks for sharing some history. The J ran by my school window when I was in 2nd grade and all I did was watch and draw trains. Went on to work on the I.C.G.. I really miss the J.. I just realized that was almost 60 years ago but I'll never forget those Centercabs switching in Matteson Yard.
My dad, George A Carter, was a railroad engineer for over 40 yrs with the EJ&E. I remember Kirk Yard, he took us kids down there to show us the trains, pick up his paycheck. thanks for this video.
Ok Diana & I worked kirk yard west end and was a switchman and used to talk with your dad a lot when i was in the west end train yard formans office having coffee.I was not awary that your dad cooked for the gandy crew on the hook on my website the are several hundred pictures of the ``J``.Thanks for your comment and take care,Norm.
My Dad got a job during WWII at the J because he had limited vision but could work. He was Charlie Goodwin, worked from 1947 - until the mid 80's. He worked Kirk Yard. He was a Carman (carknocker). He also cooked for the hook. Was probably the worst cook they had. His cooking was so bad but nobody else really wanted to do it. Gary Goodwin my uncle worked there all his career and Bobby Bray was our cousin. My dad was part of the BRC of A. He had some great stories about there.
well fox river motorman we had the rs-2`s 800 class but the baldwin 900`s were mothballed in various places but i did work only one time on a 900 & they we hugh locomotives with a lot of power.Ya i knew ross and shelby & ramos to...
Very interesting video. My grandfather had a job where he was like a "go between" working between the EJ&E RR and I think the steel mills. He knew tons of people who worked for the EJ&E. Some of his friends that I knew who worked for the J were Dick Davies and Ray Buttles. My grandfather's name was Guido George. My grandfather knew people who got me into a yard tower in Kirk Yard in the early 1990's. Do those names sound familiar to you?
Since Canadian National Railway took over, are there still some of the orange E J & E locomotives being used? I have not seen them that often coming through Richton Park/Matteson, IL.
GREAT VIDEO. Anyone know any EJ&E cabooses that could still be bought? Tried to buy one from a scenic railroad that shut down in Paw Paw, MI. One was already sold and the other has been claimed by some guy who "is going to start a museum". So far, the caboose, #541 has been sitting on a piece of track that was not ripped up with all its window busted. No one wants to sell it to me to restore.
Great slides, thanks for sharing!

Just came across your video. My Dad worked there in Gary, Indian. Lou Krnac. I can’t remember what date he retired. He was a fireman.
