    The way SRV played always mesmerized me. He was so loose and messy but at the same time tight and concise. Every movement of the pick hit something and it always fit in, nothing ever sounded out of place or like a wrong note was hit.

    I believe the descending lick around 10th - 12th frets is an Albert King lick, Stevie was a disciple of Albert King and if you listen to both of them you’ll hear King’s influence on Stevie. Additionally, Vaughan was influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush, Muddy Waters and Lonnie Mack. He also has some jazz influence courtesy of Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt and George Benson.

      imacmadman22 - Spot on my friend. Most people catch the Hendrix influence, but he was alot more Albert King than he was Jimi. In fact SRV himself talked alot more about Albert and Lonnie Mack then he did Hendrix. Then stuff like Lenny and Riviera Paradise shows the jazz influence. I agree completely with your synopsis.

      Also his brother taught him how to play guitar growing up, so he incorporated a ton of different styles and turned it into his own from what he liked to play and hear and then mastered those songs and improved upon them afterward to get the SRV we know and love

    The best thing about stevies playing in songs like little wing, texas flood, and lenny is he can go from playing careful and relaxed to aggressive. He plays like the guitar is breathing it goes from relaxed to aggressive back to relaxed so smoothly

    I met Stevie and Jimmie in 77' a few blocks from my house at Charley's Guitar Shop when it opened. Throughout his life he never forgot my name. My cousin was his AA mentor in Austin. They used to trade T shirts at every meeting. I saw him and Eric Johnson play on the same bill for a couple of years 2-3 times per month at Tango's in Dallas when they were still locals. They would do a Hendrix jam set at 12am together. Those were legendary.

    I think the way you showed the shuffle rhythm makes learning that part a lot easier. Took me forever until I slowed it down like that and just kept the motion going while slowly adding the notes until I got up to speed. And he totally does just keep it going with no chords throwing in some licks when he's singing. I think people who start getting into their guitar heroes and learning their styles focus too much on lead and soloing and not enough on rhythm, melody and dynamics in their playing. EVH is another swing rhythm monster, especially on the early albums - but everyone starts at the tapping section on Eruption before attempting the intro to I'm the One for example.

    • @jeffrey.a.hanson
      @jeffrey.a.hanson 2 роки тому

      @@andymccallum8090 You’re correct. SRV hits the open strings within the upstroke rakes of the rhythm then cuts them off. The intro shuffle sounds a little off as well. It’s the subtle blues nuanced hammer-on / pull-offs that isn’t really part of Tyler’s more aggressive left hand technique.

    • @jeffrey.a.hanson
      @jeffrey.a.hanson 2 роки тому

      @GuyNarnarian Keep it up and def one step at a time. I warn you from personal experience, tho, that his classic techniques don’t work great outside blues, tho, I think he played Rude Mood live on an acoustic 12 String to prove he could shred to a straight beat. A giant middle finger to all guitarists. Ha.

    • @GuyNarnarian
      @GuyNarnarian 2 роки тому +2

      @@andymccallum8090 I never said his technique was perfect - but just getting the feel of the shuffle before trying to play that kind of part helps. He definitely hits the open strings, but look at what he is doing when signing, not hitting every note, just keeping the shuffle going. That was kind of my point. I don't think he was trying to play it perfectly, just showing how to get there.

    The neck and bridge together is a pretty common Strat mod - popularised by David Gilmour, so it's become known as the Gilmour mod. Fender also had 7 way switching (standard 5 way, plus a push switch near the tone control to add in the bridge on positions 4 and 5) on the Mexican Deluxe Super Strat, which later became the Deluxe Player Strat. Bridge and neck together sounds vaguely Tele-ish, all three together is a great funk sound.

Especially when I’d look and see DT on the stage. Not to mention the tacit endorsement that they’d play SRV songs on stage with another guitarist. I remember them doing cold shot and crossfire. Amazing. KWS nailed every note. It amazes me he isn’t more appreciated than he is. Absolutely monster. And he’s alive! We can go see him and everything, ha

      @ROCCO SMURF arguably the best tone of all time? I'd vote yes. Or tied with Hendrix. But guitar mastery, I wouldn't put either of them remotely close to the top. Just listen to and watch some top jazz guitarists. Mind blown and not even close. More importantly, who cares about mastery. I remember getting compliments early on in my musical journey when I was mediocre at best. Coming from playing violin for 10 years and having violinists from the national symphony orchestra as my two main teachers over the years, I was shocked that anyone would be complimentary given the standards I had for myself; standards imprinted upon me from the world of classical music which I think is very high in comparison. However, most compliments were related to my style and tone, not on my wizardry on guitar (which, as I stated, was relatively non-existent at that time). And these comments were usually from other musicians in bands we were opening for or vice versa. The bottom line was that despite my fledgling ability at the time, I still, evidently, made an impression because of how I made people feel. And that's the only thing that really matters ☺️

    Actually there is a reason they call it a 7 way Gilmour mod, It was quite popular using a 5 way switch and a push pull, "The Black Strat" was documented through its changes by Taylor the tech for Gilmour, Honestly I am surprised it took Fender how many years to make it and incorporate it, now you just get it in the Ultra models and maybe a few Signatures.
    The elite was interesting and I wish the push buttons would come back instead of the 5 way switch marking those models as active electronics.
    Personally it was cool having the TBX expander and the MDX mid booster.
    Back then these failed because the guitar market was traditionalists that just wanted copies of the old strat with no innovation, this was an amazing mark, honestly Fender needs to try bringing back the elite now, basically Make it the premium above the Ultra Luxe.

    Ty Tabor used one on Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. Definitely a key element to that tone.

    This guitar was at Carter's in Nashville for a while, was lucky enough to play it a bit. Really cool to hold, but the neck was super uncomfortable

    steve traded guitars long distance with a friend. they swapped the same instruments back and forth for each player to test. they had a special signature sort of design between them that meant peace, love and brotherhood. that way they knew the guitars were in the proper hands and were shared accordingly. i played a CAR strat with his signature and the mark at saint louis. killer vintage.

    My 86 Steinberger GL3TA has 3 single coils and uses those exact buttons as pickup on/off sectors. Fender must have used the idea on that model.

    I have a 83 fender elite strat in red. I call it the les Paul killer ( only jokes, I love LP’s ) I use it hard tail as the trem isn’t great. But it sings and it is like 10+ pounds. Oh yeah and Stevie was one of the greats. Bless his soul for giving us the music he did.

    I really really wanted an elite back in the day, they even made a hardtail version which was the coolest, they got discontinued almost as soon as they were released, and now the used ones are rare and becoming vintage and pricey

    Great video! I love the way you broke down those licks. Stevie was/is/always will be the best. Also, this might be the first videos I’ve seen I a whole that someone hasn’t disliked just to be a d-bag. Haha

    yes on the great approach to the "texas shuffle"!! i've been struggling with that forever. Second, has anyone tried switching out (no pun intended) their blade switch for buttons? i would love this. when i get really going, i tend to hit the 5-way switch and i think this would be a great solution, outside of doing something silly like actually getting better strumming discipline.

    I bought one of these guitars . paid $400 , used . in 2000. i was not guitar shopping, just gitting some strings . I saw it on the wall
    picked it up and instantly knew it was a gem . I think its one of Fenders best guitars . Fender was trying to gain more of the market and live down the lower quilaty of previous post CBS years . They went all out on this guitar . I own 13 quality guitars , but this is one of my favorites. If you get a chance by one . Some day they will command a pretty penny.

    I think a large reason for why stevie was so good at dynamics was actually the string gauge, it really affects the way you play the guitar when you put 13 or even higher gauge strings on and the possibilities in terms of dynamics expand greatly.

    I had the 1983 USA standard strat from the same series, it was crap, had a jack socket where the 3rd tone dial should be, had to remove the scratchplate to alter the trem springs, I ended up customising mine and used it for 14 years before selling it, you can still find stock versions about.

    I’m a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan. I believe he is the greatest guitar player in the world. I still cry when I think of his name. I really wish I could get this guitar. But I can’t afford it unfortunately. God bless everyone and their family members. I still pray for Jimmie Vaughan and his family. I’m glad he is still alive and healthy today.
