  • G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be processing a large opal matrix parcel from a recent video. With the test treatment done, we can see how the colour bars run and can begin slicing it into manageable slabs. Then the cleanest solid stones are marked out and sliced apart. Roughing out pre forms for cutting and polishing, with multiple treatments along the way. Then sit back and relax to the montage of finished stones, watch right through to the end. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍

      G’day Mark, I cut that parcel for someone, as soon as I hear that they are listing them I’ll give it a mention, most likely Facebook for sales. Don’t mind me going on about matrix, I’m just trying to lift any remaining stigma around it. Some viewers may not even know about it, but if they delve a little out of interest, the negativity surrounding opal dealers past discrepancies and dishonesty will surface, this will muddy the water to the point of distrust in it all together. I say this because at one point I wouldn’t have anything to do with it, as I knew nothing about it, and had only heard the bad things like, it’s not real opal, it’s treated to trick people into thinking it’s actual black opal, it has no value, etc… but hey, 🎶Video killed the radio star.

I was wondering if you could make a jewelry piece for her with Opal. A ring or pendant would be nice. My budget is up to $500, and they don't have to be large stones. • @theopalmills

      G’day Sandy, once you resin coat the stone, it cures with a gloss finish, no need to polish. This video should get you going Resin treating rainbow matrix opal.

    How rare is the stuff of this quality you processed in this video? Will in the future be a depreciation of the stones, as they are treated, as it seems these are huge chunks for precious opals?
    And one more thing - how thin can you potentially make slices of the Andamooka opals? Can it be 2 mm? Just thinking of one idea.

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  3 місяці тому

      G’day mate, considering matrix has been pulled out since they mined opal in Andamooka, but it wasn’t valuable enough to keep, so there’s a lot that was either buried again or left down the hole. The matrix wasn’t totally discarded, some was kept to cut stones and are still around today, aged well. From what I understand, hard matrix has made the gemstone list, so future value should hold. With matrix opal, the host rock needs to be considered, as to how structurally stable it is, depending on the size stone you’re cutting, some will break easily if sliced too thin, but 2mm on a small ring stone would be ok. 🤪👍

    Dumb question but what's the difference between bolder opal and matrix opal? They both look like a dark stone except for the matrix when u cut it

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  3 місяці тому

      Boulder opal from QLD is opal that has been deposited into ironstone, some ironstone has veins of opal the can be faced, and some has opal infused into the ironstone that will cut picture stones, whereas Andamooka matrix opal is where opal has been deposited in a host rock, usually limestone or sandstone, this type of matrix is mostly porous. There are other types of opal matrix, it means opal has formed in any host rock, like when gold that forms in host quartz veins is called a gold/quartz matrix. 🤪👍

    Awesome Phil ! I’ve got to get me some Andamooka matrix to play with, any suggestions where to start. One day matrix will be worth more than most other types of opal because they can make synthetic versions of most opal but they will never be able to make synthetic matrix opal because it is in the host rock. It would have taken millions of year for the opal to seep into the base rock and then settle into the colourful spheres that give the host rock that stunning play of colour. Who cares if needs treating, the treatment is permanent and the end result is stunning that’s all that counts.
