Arguably the finest drama ever to be broadcast on British television. Exploring themes of sexuality, nationalism, cold war paranoia, landscape, climate, art, mysticism, Paganism and radical interpretations of Christianity, Penda's Fen is the kind of avant-garde film-making that will likely never be seen on British television again. Endlessly rewatchable and eternally complex, it remains an all to rare testament to the transformative potential of visual media.
My colleague and I are doing a presentation at Bewdley Festival in October entitled 'Mired in Penda's Fen' ... please contact us if you can beforehand ... we were only 12 when we first saw it. You are our hero!
Can anyone please advise where and how I can watch this understated masterpiece? There’s something very special about early 70s film making in the UK. I remember sounds of crows/ravens cawing or incidental eerie flute music - associated with drama heavily tied to landscapes (MR James ghost stories in Suffolk spring to mind) Australians did a similar thing (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Walkabout etc) I haven’t watched this yet - very eager to see it.
Hi @LaPtiteAnglaise - I just spoke to our curators, who agree that there is something special about 70s British films, so I recommend keeping an eye on our programme for January. 🤫😉
It is a tricky one to find , being shown. All of the play for today’s , I’d like to know. . Our monthly licences bought them. Where are they all? We have to pay again ? That seems unfair .
Very little that shows where t o watch . I have tried . So far failed . Where it’s meant to be available it isn’t . I shall persist . Which brought me here .
A great writer. I watched the first broadcast of PENDA'S FEN, when I was a student. Once seen, never forgotten
