Africans have been suffering for thousands of years because of tribalism. Europeans and Arabs used the tribalism problem in Africa to turn Africans against each other, which made it easy for them to enslave and colonize Africans. To build a stable modern country, you need a united population that identifies as one. And for life to get better for Africans, Africans will need to work together. So as long as Africans continue practicing tribalism, they will forever suffer.

Ohh wow, Ayodeji spoke my mind.
Tribalism existed more among the older generations and less among this present one, we just agreed to talk about it more than they did.
The rate at which inter-ethnic kind of marriage is increasing shows that we're ready to dump tribalism for love compared those times when it's a taboo to marry from other tribes.

    • @alvanalvino
      @alvanalvino Рік тому +1

Nigerians still married from the other tribes for love in pre colonial times despite the tribal warfare the couples have to go through and half of the times the extended families broke up the unfortunate marriages to split the couples. So many civil wars went in our past that kept the old generations divided. Our nasty and unfair political history didn’t convince them either. They seam to think that Nigeria will break apart any moment since the 1960s. We are still here together today even after a national civil war.
A good government that was voted in my the people without foreign interventions and electoral fraud like the free and fair June 12th 1993 presidential elections of the late president elect chief MKO Abiola and the 2023 elections that Peter Obi won would have united Nigerians and cemented the bond between our over 500 diverse ethic groups within just 8 years. 90% of Nigeria’s political class need to be swept out of power forever in a revolution.
Us Nigerians. We unite more in the diasporas. I was raised on the concept of one strong, united and indivisible federal republic of Nigeria decades ago. I still believe in Nigeria as Africa’s greatest hope because there are no other alternatives out there.

@@mcdaniayo3711 He has a Yoruba father? Which makes him Yoruba. Every ethnic group under the sun lives in Lagos. That's a reality that has next to nothing to do with Yoruba people or Yorubaland. Just as Abuja has nothing to do with the North. The capital of Nigeria was Lagos for a long time, people flocked there, overtime it became the commerce capital, likewise in Abuja. That it is no longer the capital, doesn't mean you can recreate history, to create this falsehood that people want to live with Yoruba people because of something you supposedly did.
Yorubaland, for all intents and purposes is one of the least developed regions of the country, outside of Lagos. It's littered with shanty towns and slums, as far as the eye can see. That's why millions of Yoruba people have trooped into tiny Lagos, and are now trying to claim it as their own. As if all Igbo people left, Lagos wouldn't collapse economically.

The Yorubas appears to be more tribalistic because the economic hub, Lagos is in their land. Their region, South West is also arguably the most developed region in the country. The entertainment (music and movie), tourism, education etc find expression more there and as such there is more cross-cultural interactions. Tribalism exist in other regions but because there is less cross-cultural or multicultural interaction, we don’t know the extent of their tribalism and that makes it seem the hubris of ethnocentrism is less prevalent

The concepts of development is much more robust. For example, Ogun State is the most industrialised states in Nigeria with more than 16 Universities. Is there any other states with more industrial outputs in the South-South? Most of the states in the South-South still rely on oil revenues, even the most touted Odili road in Port Harcourt have such reputation because that’s where most of the oil companies are situated. Your case study is not strong enough as a basis to draw conclusion. 2023 election. No.
It was preceded by different events that caused the imbalance.
I didn't vote, I would have voted Peter Obi (Igbo). My street has majority of Yoruba and Peter Obi won the presidential election but Gbadebo Chinedu lost the gubernatorial election.
I overheard some Yoruba men vowing that "we will never allow Igbo here". They went ahead to state what annoys them. The statement "Lagos is a no-man's land".
I don't know who started the statement, but that war may never end. I first saw it when Facebook started, and it grew. He may not really mean what he's saying, but just want the Yoruba to feel the pain of the statement. Fine, they felt the pain, but you made the wrong joke. It's too sensitive.
Yoruba's vote is always what determines presidential result and that's why all attention is on Yoruba. Peter Obi had almost 100% of votes in the south east, you think they voted massively because they believed in him? No. Some, Yes, but for many, it's just because "It should be Igbo's turn".
Some northerners must have voted for Tinubu because he's a Muslim.
We are equally tribalistic. The answer to who is MOST, depends on the case study being considered.

People like to ignore the numbers which is the most objective barometer to measure this kind of complex and sensitive topics, instead, they go with personal views and opinions of those within their circles who likely share the same views as themselves and this can never be representative of reality.

The most tribalistic tribe in Nigeria is the Igbo. The Yoruba are the most receptive ,hospitable tribe and highly tolerant. Perhaps the reason why their region is the most progressive. Follow by the Hausas, especially if you embrace their Islamic religious conservatism, least materialistic. Also Hospitable too.however, Hausa could be intolerant of unfamiliar culture and traditions. As someone who has transverse all the regions and also lived amongst all the tribe and coming from a minority tribe myself, my observation showed the Igbo to be tribalistic and the first to shout tribalism when the same tribal card is being played against them.. It is not a surprise that their region abores the least tribes or ethnicity in Nigeria. Igbo played a central role in governance in the 1960s. In fact, they led the first coup that killed almost all the post independence Nigerian leaders. While they specifically killed other tribe leaders, all their leader were tipped off to go on exile. No single Igbo leaders were killed. It is also common to see Igbo buying land and building houses amongst other tribe in Nigeria, meanwhile ,in their region, they are hostile, forbid to sell land to other tribes or if you are not Igbo. In fact, Igbo can also be tribalistic to themselves. They practice the chaste system, very similar to the Hindus. Amongst the Igbo, there are people who are forbidden to get married to or live with. They called them 'Osu'. Unfortunately, my wife's friend was stigmatised by some of her Igbo mates for being Osu. This stigmatisation amongst the Igbo made some of them go on permanent exile, never to go back to Igbo land. In the last election, 90% of them voted for presidential candidates from their region(in a multiparty election) despite the fact that he was the least qualified of two candidates of the major parties. Results showed that the Igbo candidate won in Igbo dominated communities in Nigeria. Lagos is a Yoruba state, they voted massively for the Igbo candidate to the extent he won a Yoruba candidate on his land, something not possible in igboland. There are more Igbo in Yoruba and Hausa land than in Igboland. The most profitable marketplace for the Igbo is not Igbo land but Alaba international market in Yoruba land. These showed how Detribalized and opened other tribes are.

The presidential voting patterns prove who is more tribalistic. The fact is that numbers do not lie. Igbos have voted for presidents from the North and presidents from the West. Neither the West of the North has voted for anyone from the East. =Igbos were attacked in Lagos and had their shops destroyed by Yorubas because they feared Peter Obi being president. GRV told was told shouldn't be allowed to win because his mother is Igbo and was called "ọmọ ale" by Yorubas. The more these people hate Igbos, the stronger Igbos will be become. A lot of projection in the comment from the real tribalists. They know in their heart that their hatred has blinded them to be okay with backwardness (corruption, no light, no good roads, lack of clean water, bad education system, terrorism, kidnapping, bad health care, cultism, etc) as long as Ndi Igbo suffers with them.

Yorubas are more tribalistic than any other tribe in Nigeria. It should be remembered that the cause of the Nigerian Civil War was as a result of disagreements between Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola plus Mr. Adegoke Adelabu. (We'll discuss this later). After the civil war, and the establishment of the NYSC, things were smooth, and National Unity was getting to be achieved. The instability and the plant or seed of discord was sown by the leadership of the 1999 through the 2007. That seed of discord, hate, discrimination and apathy has grown so much now that it will take a lot to remove and destroy.
Everyone saw what happened during the 2022 elections. What Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu, MC Oluomo, and others showed that the same tribe that helped build Lagos should not have a say in Lagos State, and also, if your mother is Igbo or Hausa, that you are not allowed to vote in Lagos, even if you have lived in Lagos for thousands of years. But Tinubu forgot that his wife, Oluremi Tinubu is an Itsekiri woman. Yet Nigeria has a Federal Government that has the responsibility to unite the nation, but not doing that. Look at the employment pattern in Nigeria today, is it not NEPOTISTIC? The national leadership could play nepotism in a country where States control their own resources, and do not wait for monthly allocations from the Federal Government. In that case, States would have enough funds to create jobs and provide other amenities for its people.
    tribalistic

The cause of the civil war in Nigeria was because of the coup orchestrated by Igbo soldiers who killed Mortherners including the Prime Minister and millitary heads from the North with some of Yoruba extraction. No single igbo was killed. Aguyi Ironsi became head of state but nothing was being dine to thr perpetrators and the Northerners carried out theirs killing igbos and some Yoruba got caught in the crossfire. It is referred to as the coup of 1966, it was the very first coup in Nigeria that ended the first republic. Hence of all the coups ot is a very significant event which also led to civil war in Nigeria. We need to be very careful not to rewrite history by deleting perrinent details. This coup was what what caused the Northern retaliation, and the civil war. I insist that we honour the truth when referring to history, the coup was led by Igbo military officers and no igbo senior army officer was killed matter of fact they all were mysteriously away at the time which led to the belief that they must have been informed prior to the coup taking place. Some Yoruba officers were killed during the coup. Mainly Northern leaders were killed by the masterminds of the coup who were all of Igbo extraction. This is a fact. If a group leads an attack and killing of another that is an act of war. So the civil war was single handedly caused by the actions of those that led the first coup. Where no one from their tribe lost a life. The guy above is trying to place blame on others. Obafemi Awolowo did not and was not responsible for the coup either partially or indirectly. Obafemi Awolowo didn't want war. There will always be a price to pay if we embrace lies in order to change the narrative. We should be able to be honest even if it makes us look bad. At least there is honor in you. To change everything or lie will continue to allow distrust to fester.

But in reality the people that have always been the problem of the Yoruba's are the igbo's simply bcos only the igbo' tribe can tell another tribe that their ancestral land is a no man's land, Or Igbo parents lying to their young ones by spreading false story about how the Yoruba's betray them which was actually the other way round.
Infact it was the igbo's that organized the first ever coup in Nigeria which got other tribe's leader killed just for the purpose of placing an Igbo general called Aguiyi Ironsi as the head of state.
But it's unfortunate that the Northerners came for their revenge some months later just for the purpose of assassinating Ironsi and his Cohorts in government which later lead to the Biafran war.
The igbo's have always been the problem of the Yoruba's right before the coup bcos Nnamdi Azikwe himself have once sorted out the help of the Northerners in order to divide the western lands into two simply bcos Awolowo took second position in the first ever election conducted in Nigeria after the British left us power.
As a matter of fact, they succeeded dividing the Western territory into two regions which later gave birth to the South South Region.

Why do GS the French, English, Scotsman, Welshman,Swedish, Germans, etc call themselves tribes….some of them are much smaller than our ethnic groups which we reduced to ‘tribes’. You people should read about cultural anthropology and differentiate between upholding you ethnic cultures and tribalism and nepotism. I think the basic problem is a poor governance structure which leads to distrust….injustice and corruption. It s a complex issue. It is good you are talking about it, but I think the approach is rather narrow….

@annefalola9278 I agree 💯,. Personally, I know tribe is a smaller group, and clans are even smaller and of family structure. I'm getting along in the discussion and following the trend, and knowing that's what Nigerian are conversant with , I just follow in.

Your statement is so silly. Do you think Igbos hadn't encountered stiff neck Yoruba person who refused to sell land nor rent an apartment for Igbo person.
You lot are too quick in shifting blame and turn blind eye to what your fellow tribe do to others.
You claimed both are accommodating and yet you fought yourself resulting to death and lost of goods and properties burned down.
In case you're not properly informed, there are lots of Yorubas, Northerners and some other South South living in the East.

I travel everyday to Nigeria via nollywood. From this perspective, IGBO people are more tribalist.
In reality the lack of green pasture oportunities, bad social experiences turns most of us into tribalists bcz tribe is where belong, second to family.
African countries are not nations. African countries are regional blocks, which includes dozens even hundreds of nations like Nigeria. No country have managed such diversity before the end of colonialism making it challenging to Africa get some sort of social and national stability. The solution is a marathon race not a sprint bcz we have been dealing with each other for so long most of the time in wrong maner.
