As someone who has been obsessed with the history of WW2 and from shetland myself, it is great to see some light on something that never gets talked about!
One of those boats, "M/K Andholmen" has been restored, and lies in Stavanger.
KNM Hitra has also been restored, and is at Haakonsvern naval base in Bergen.
I was vaguely aware of the Shetland Bus before watching this, I'm now 98% more knowledgeable on the subject. Thanks.

I don't belive Bismark went through the english channel, or am I missreading that line of dashes?
Apologies for that one, slight miscommunication on our End. You are correct, Bismark entered the Atlantic Ocean through the waters far North of the Shetlands
@@TheFront
Still enjoying the video.
@@TheFront I've studied WW2 via many You Tube documentaries, as soon as I saw your wholly incorrect route of Bismarck, I stopped watching this documentary.
You are correct.
I think it was Scharnhorst and Gaunanzinou... "Channel Dash."???
Sorry about bad bad spelling attempt.
I'm thankful for their service
Just a one thing, at 21:22, the dot is located at Ålesund. Narvik is several hundred kilometers further north.
Yes.
I was thinking he meant to say Bergen.
Thanks.
An absolutely amazing presentation thank you
Thank You for this SHETLAND WAR Story!
Excellent documentary, I knew a little of the shetland bus after reading Ray means the real heroes of telemark but had no idea of how much they were responsible for . Once again very interesting documentary thank you
Fascinating video - my distant relative was Lt. Gen. Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart VC who commanded an Anglo-French force that landed at Namsos. He thoroughly acknowledged the bravery of the Norwegians which was second to none and the whole story of Norwegian resistance from 1940 until 1945 is a litany of brave individual exploits against overwhelming odds. The Norwegian Monarch, King Haakon VII, led his country brilliantly (if you get the chance, please watch the film 'The King's Choice'). Thank you for highlighting yet another aspect to Norway's brave contribution during WW2.
I maybe wrong but, pretty sure the Bismarck did not go through the dover straights to access the Atlantic
Yea, we caught this in the video review, but missed the fact the editors forgot to change it after we'd made notes. Our mistake!
Had the pleasure of meeting David Howarth on Antigua in 1978 when he was advising on the BBC production of Great Britain’s, Nelson the subject. I now live in Ålesund and one of the ‘Buses’ is alive and well and sea worthy here! M/K Heland
UPDATE- 08/06/24 I passed the ’Heland’ today on the water off Ålesund. The skipper gave me a wave has I passed. She was proudly wearing the Shetland Bus memorial flag from her newly rigged foremast. It’s a pity I can’t add the pictures I took along with these comments!
Regardless of the number of resistance agents involved, each one played a vital role.
Here, these brave men and women, were battling the Germans, collaborators, the weather and the sea. Can you imagine never knowing for years those who could be trusted and the long-term affects caused by this mistrust.
Knowing the consequences for yourself, families and entire towns depending on the whim of the Germans.
These heroes must never be forgotten. What amazing movies their stories of survival, willpower and fighting spirit would be.
I got a copy of Howarths book whilst up on Shetland it’s a very moving account. Visiting Luna Ness and Vidlin Voe is a must
1:56 That's not the course Bismarck took on her ill fated voyage. She headed north around northern Iceland then south through the Denmark Straight.
*_Excellent._*
_Thank You_ for posting this video 👏👍🏻🙏💫
(Thank you too, James for Sharing it 👌🏻 with me.)
The David Howarth book is definitely worth a read. Also, remember a movie called The Shetland Bus.
I’ve been trying to find the film thought it was called “suicide mission “ featuring surviving crew members
My father fought in WWII and didn't get home to his family in England until 1 year after it ended, then ended up moving to Australia in the late 50's for a fresh start, where I was born in the 60's.
Thanks for the video
Can you do a video on the Netherlands in WW1 ,the unofficial 5th Central Power ?
This first I knew of this campaign was when I played hidden and dangerous 2 on pc back in 2003
As they said in the movie, The Heroes of Telemark, all they really needed was a little help from the Trolls!
That was the Hollywood version. In the first movie "Kampen om Tungtvannet", from 1948, wverybody except Joachim Rønneberg, played themselves. I don't recall any mention of trolls. I think it can be found wirh English subtext.
@@Lassisvulgaris A better version I'm sure, but the Hollywood version said that a lot
@@johnryder1713 Haven't seen it in a long time, but I'm sure they did....
Ah, yes. There's also a TV series from 2015 by the name "The Heavy Water War". Haven't seen it yet, but supposed to be good. Only thing is they rewrote the "Operation Freshman", to fit the script, so the Royal Engineers were shot upon capture, instead of being brought in to the GESTAPO, to get tortured and executed. That happened not far from where I live in Stavanger. Some are actually buried here, as well, being honoured at Remembrance Day.
@@Lassisvulgaris That series with Anna Friel, a UK/Norway co production was brilliant, if you can track it down its more than worth a watch, and Ray Mears Docu and book combination The Real Heroes of Telemark while your at it
@@johnryder1713 I will. I can also recommend "The King's Choice", "The Battle for Narvik""Max Manus", "The Twelth Man" and Danish "9. April"....
Some years ago, I had the honour and pleasure of meeting Joachim Rønneberg at a course through Norwegian Home Guard at Dombås. A very modest and pleasent man. ...
I don’t think people were calling The Great War WW I before WW II.
Outstanding.
Very well told.
(Movie...? W/ Ann Sheridan, Earl Flynn.)
The Germans invaded Norway to secure iron from Sweden, still vital in 1944. The Germans couldn't risk losing it. So the resistance did tie up troops that could have fought in Russia or Normandy.
Great video!
The Bismark did not ever go via the English Channel
A great story, Thank you very much for posting it.
Good video. You need to check your arctic circle map. Narvik is within it, but not the southern port you described. Traena.
The defense pf Norway was planned as a joint British / French operation .
Yep
The map showing Træna and the Shetlands is wrong. It shows the Shetlands as being north of Træna, which it isn't. The latitude of the Arctic Circle is 66 degrees 34 minutes North. The latitude of Træna is 66 degrees 30 minutes North. The Shetlands lie at 60 degrees 20 minutes North. That means the latitude difference is 69 miles or 111 km further south of the Arctic Circle (this is mentioned in the documentary). So, when we put in the longitude difference between Træna and the Shetlands, we find there is a distance of 592 miles or 952 km from the Shetlands to Træna. This documentary in itself is great, but as I am from Norway I found that the map here was not a good representation of the facts. None of this distracts from the excellence of this documentary. As of Rjukan being mentioned here, I will just add that my grandparents and uncle worked at the Hydro Scheme where they were producing heavy water. But that is another story. Thank you for posting.
Træna is placed very veryfar away from its actual location..
👍👍👍
Did you say rout instead of route? Thy're very different words with very different meanings.
