    We've all fidgeted with our snare wires, whether after purchasing new ones or replacing a snare side head or maybe just in pursuit of a better sound. Getting snare wires installed properly can sometimes be a challenge and if it's not done right, getting a good, consistent sound from your snare drum is incredibly difficult.
    In this episode, we demonstrate our mounting methods for a set snare wires with a strap on a modern Tama Starclassic snare drum vs. mounting wires with string on a vintage 1960's Ludwig Acrolite with a Ludwig P83 snare strainer in order to maximize the usable tension range so you can adjust your batter and snare side tension without needing to do more than dial in the snare strainer tension. This isn’t the only way to install wires but it’s what’s worked well consistently for us and is the approach we’ve taken with all previous videos showcasing snare drums.

    What's your preferred snare mounting method (straps or strings)?

    • @LevinL
      @LevinL 6 років тому +8

      Straps, since 1. I find they're a lot easier to install 2. They won't dig into the edge of a drum (only really a concern on wooden drums) nearly as much since they disperse the pressure over a much larger are. Just my 2 cents :)

      Whatever the drum originally comes with, I usually just stick with that method. The manufacturer must have shipped it that way for a reason..? That’s my thinking! Cheers

      Strings. I am unable to line up straps for some reason.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 років тому +10

      Always worth experimenting though. You'd be surprised to know how often drums ship with certain OEM gear that doesn't allow the drum to function at it's best. Heads and wires are at the top of the list for that. Thanks for watching!

      @vaquilina 6 років тому +8

      Strings have always been my preferred method as I've had trouble seating (plastic) straps in the past. Once they've got a good kink in them, it becomes difficult to adjust them without replacing them. Those nylon straps appear to be much more functional though.
      There's also something cool about using string, I guess since it's sort of old school.
      Great channel with excellent, knowledgeable and articulate hosts and top notch information. Thank you!

    Man, I wish would have watched this vid yesterday! I played a gig where I just COULD NOT get those snares engaged and was forced to play the gig with what was essentially a garbage can haha. I thought it was a tuning issue, but just turned out my snares werent applied properly to the drum (it was my first time applying snares on my own)!!
    But now I know, so thanks for saving me from future trash can gigs.

    Thank you for this video. I was dumb and overtightened a reso head on my spare snare drum and it ripped. I ran out and bought a new head and had to remove the snares for the first time ever. This video helped me get it back on quickly and have the snare drum back in action. Much appreciated!

    I have an early 70s Ludwig Super Sensitive Snare. The one with the bar running through the center, that raises and lowers the wires, rather than pulling them tight. I would absolutely be over the moon to see a video addressing working with that mechanism.

    This (as with all of your other videos) is very helpful and informative. I’ve been struggling with a vintage Premier steel shell snare that uses holes on the strainer, and my biggest issue has been that the leading brands of snare cord seem to be laquered. This makes it very difficult to tie a knot that stays put - it doesn’t settle as a string would.

    Another really good video. You’re channel is gold! I never had too much trouble with adjusting snare wires though. Even if I mostly play an acrolite from the 70s. But the George Way “beer tab” throw off really is a pain in the butt, imho ;)

      Jimmy Jazz I concur, I use a Way beer tap on a vintage Kent I fixed up and that drum is, in general, my most difficult drums to tune up to my liking. The six lugs also play a big part in that as well.

    Thanks a lot for this video, Cody and Ben! I just went back again to watch your first tutorial and decided to tune and set up my snare from zero. This helped a lot, I had so much fun tuning and installing snare wires, and my snare sounds so much better now!!! The only thing I still found a bit tricky is listening to the overtones to get the pitch of the drum even, but I guess it's just a matter of practice...

      Glad to hear it! The best thing that you can do is practice tuning and ear training in order to identify the pitches at various lugs, the interaction between batter, reso, and snare wires, and the overall sound of the drum. You'll definitely find yourself improving with time. Cheers! -Ben

    Very recently bought a new Pearl Export kit (I'm not a drummer) and the snare sounded terrible no matter how I tuned it. Weird resonant buzzy sound. I removed the snares to see if reseting them would help and this video was very helpful in showing me how to put them back on. Thanks for the video, Another expertly presented and put together video.
    I've noticed different brands and types of wires have different endplate designs. For example Fatcat wires have 2 basic endplate models, pitched for snares with shallow or no beds, and a non-pitched models for snares with deeper beds. Yamaha endplates appear to be pitched as well.
    Have you found any general guidelines when choosing a set of wires and mounting options for a given drum with a particular style of beds ?
    Obviously the width of the snare bed dictates how many strands it will accommodate.

  • @LevinL
    @LevinL 6 років тому

    Very informative as always! Although I found that starting with the throw-off side allows me to perfectly position the snare wires in the center of the drum before tightening down the butt plate side, by slightly tightening/loosening the throw off

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 років тому +2

      Thanks! That's the best part- if you've found something that works for you, then that's great. We both choose to mount from the opposite end first since that side will remain static with regards to the distance from the shell, allowing us to focus on the tension on the strainer side. Regardless, what matters most is making sure that the wires are centered once tension is applied. Cheers!

    Excellently informative video, thank you guys. I have to wonder now about the design element of all those holes in that throw off mechanism though. Was it Ludwig’s intent to drive drummers mad trying to figure out which of those holes they should be using and why? Imagine all the different ways one could experiment with (or obsessively waste time with) to tie the snares off with that thing.

    Hey Sounds Like A Drum, great video, great channel!! For many years I used a strap, but I think it's useful to know both methods. What about a Dual Glide? The Sonor snare strainer system, it uses string and have two adjustment knobs: in the mechanism and another in the butt: I must also loosen that other (how much?) or I must leave it as is and simply install the string...? When I have my snare wires installed (puresound custom so they have cords), the snares rattle even when the throw off is off. The snares aren't overly tight as well, so does that mean that it's an issue with assembly of the wires, or is it the throw off?

  • @squarelevelplumb
    @squarelevelplumb 6 років тому

    I use those same Puresound snares as in the first example, but I took off the spring clips and used some 1/8th inch aluminum rod to keep the snares and strap straight. With the clip they want to slide a bit to one side.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 років тому

      The Custom Pro series mounting is a little tricking. If you don't have a hairpin clip of some sort, there's often a greater risk of them falling out during performance. That being said, even the hairpins will fall out if they're not centered within the inset portion of the end clips.

    • @squarelevelplumb
      @squarelevelplumb 6 років тому

      The aluminum rod I used had to be forced into the strap and in two years or more has not slipped. I found that after some time, disengaging and engaging the snares caused to clip to shift and cause the snare wires not to be totally parallel with the hoop of the rim causing stange sounds. One would have to see what works for them.

    I have found I could be most creative with the ludwig p86 millennium throw compared to the P83. Because the arm of the P86 sits perpendicular to the drum, as opposed to parallel like the P83, mounting my snare with the throw at my 6:30 (or right between my legs) allows me to engage and disengage as I drum. Whats more, engaging sounds like a ghost note or a predelay on a loud crack. While improving I am able to use my snare as a shallow tom for long sections and just drop in two cracks at random then release the throw again as i bring my arm down. You know the sound the snare makes as the wires are engaged. Just imagine using that as a note before a snare crack at about the speed/tempo of cocking a shotgun. I need to do a video cause I cant find anyone else doing this and I think folks would like it. It's fun and it makes the missus roll her eyes at me which means she loves it..... I think.

    Hey guys, I have a question!
    I have a steel Yamaha snare with the same pure sound wires. An Evans technician in my local shop helped me set it up last weekend with new wires, batter and resonant head. Sounded gorgeous. I keep my drums in the garage where the temperature fluctuates (UK Winter/Spring). I went to play last night and the noticed immediately snare wires had lost a lot of the tension and didn't sound as clean when trying to add tension to the strainer so I ended up loosening them off and trying to re-fit them.
    My question:
    Can the strap ribbons stretch with temperature/moisture or is it more likely that they've slipped through the tension mechnism?
    Love your channel.

    Great video, super helpful. Do you need less wire strands the thinner the snare bed? My Vintage COS snare has a very narrow snare bed, 20 strands seem to buzz a lot. Should I try 16’s?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 років тому

      I'd say yes, definitely worth a try. Maybe even 12's or perhaps a narrow 'orchestral' set. If the contour of the head (because of those narrow snare beds) forces any of the wires away from the surface or makes the outer wires feel loose compared to those in the center, i'd look into something more narrow. I've seen some modern drums that are going for the vintage feel and vibe, Joyful Noise for instance, that at times use very narrow crimped snare beds and I saw first hand how much changing the wires can change the drum in this regard. Good luck!

      Yes! I’ve actually encountered more than a few issues with the Brooklyn series when they were released. I don’t recall working with the snare drums. My question to you is if you have a tension knob on the butt plate as well, would you recommend making that as loose as it can go too? 2 of my snares have this and I would love to hear your feedback.
    Thanks!

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  5 років тому +1

      Oh, like there are tension adjustment knobs on both ends? Hmm, I think I’d probably put the secondary one at the midpoint and just treat it like a normal passive butt plate. The thing you want is some room on the mechanism to adjust tighter or loose and for the wires to be centered on the head when engaged, so I think that’d be the way to go. Plus with that kind of mechanism, you can adjust the centering of the wires by loosening one end and tightening the other incrementally. Pretty cool :) - Cody

    I am currently experiencing wire problems I never had before on my Sonor Protean and my Pearl Ian Paice. I get a really high pitched nasty feedback from the wires, and I don´t know what to do. It is partly resolved on the Sonor, because its wires are less (8 strands) and shorter (31,50 cm instead of the usual 33 cm). Any advice you could give?

    Do you have a preferred model of snare wires for jazz? I currently have Canopus Vintage Dry wires on my Yamaha MCA snare based on some recommendations, but I don't really dig the sound. It's a little too bitey (mids high?) for me. I'm not sure if it's the wires, but it consistently sounds like when using different tuning approaches as per your videos. I want articulation, tone, and warmth.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  5 років тому +1

      Yeah those particular wires are suuuper articulate and can be a little sharp-sounding for my taste (i've had two sets over the years). I personally only really use two kinds of wires (apart from if i'm just using whatever came with the drum) I use Puresound Custom Pro 24 steel for a wider/softer sound and Puresound Blasters for everything else. Don't be scared by the name, the Blasters are way versatile and much closer to older steel snappy snares that i've found on vintage gretsch or ludwig drums in terms of the thickness/stiffness of the wire. There are also 20 strand Custom Pro's if you want less wire sound, but with any of the sets I mentioned you should be able to get a great jazz sound with proper snare side tuning. Good luck! - Cody

    What about strategies for centering the snare wires once on the head and engaged? I find that to be pretty important to get a good snare sound/response and its always a struggle.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  5 років тому

      Absolutely - it’s super important. I don’t have any specific tricks, I just pull on the wires or strap that’s on the mechanism side after the butt plate side is mounted and cinched down and look at where that end of the wires lands on the head when it’s under tension. Cheers! -Cody

      Yes! But always double check to make sure that there aren’t any sharp points (anything that could pierce the snare reso) protruding. If you discover something, you can file it down with a metal file.

    How does the number of strands of wire affect what sound you get? As well as what material they're made of? Phosphor bronze vs steel?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 років тому +1

      Hey! In theory, more wires = more snare wires sound and less = more articulation. Depending on your snare beds, you may be able to use 42 strand wires with great articulation, or get a fat pillowy sound with 16 strands so it's not exactly a law or anything, more something to be experimented with a little to see what your drum likes. Regarding material, I've found that the gauge (thickness) of the wire used to make the snares has a much larger effect on the sound than the actual material. Thicker = louder/aggressive, thinner = warmer and more sizzly.

      I use a Gibraltar 9608SFT Softy Drum Throne and it has never squeaked on me in almost 5 years of rigorous usage. It is a pretty heavyweight throne so the fittings are really well made really helps. It has a plush 5 x 14” top (yes, the same size as your snare perhaps) and nice, wide rubber feet. Both provide a super stable platform for playing. The piano screw adjustment let’s you dial in the height precisely. One concern, though not for me, in its lowest possible position, the seat is a bit high. I am 6’ tall, so not an issue but shorter players may encounter some problems. Hope this helps you out Josh, good playing.

    Where should I put the snare adjustment if they’re a one on the butt plate side AND on the snare switch side. I have a Tama SLP Bubinga and there’s snare adjustments on both sides. I changed the stock snares but I’m still having buzzing issues and it’s really discouraging and frustrating. I don’t know what I’m doing and I watched this video 100 times. I really can’t get the sound I want and I’ve literally been messing with it all day. I jut want a good metal crack but it’s soo ringy and buzzy.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  5 років тому

      I hear ya, yeah those can be trick. Honestly if I had one of those I'd probably just tighten the butt plate side up all the way and pretend like it's the non-adjustable kind. I'm not 100% sure what the need is for adjustment on the butt plate side as well (other than maybe to have some wiggle room for making sure the wires are centered on the head after installation). Based on the sound issues you're describing it's probably more of a snare-side head tuning/leveling issues than the wires or that mechanism but hard to say without seeing it in person. FWIW, i've also purchased snare wires that turned out to be defective right out of the box once or twice. It's uncommon but it can happen (damage in shipping etc), might be worth taking them off the drum and laying them on a table to make sure they're not twisted or anything. Good luck! - Cody

    I have a question. A couple of months ago I bought a 24 Strands snare wires, but by watching a previous video on your channel it seems like this wires are for a snare with no snare bed (Like the Tama Starclassic on your video) but my snare is a Mapex Armory Tomahawk and a Ludwig Epic and both have snare beds. Do you think that if I put this on any of my snares it would affect the sound in a dramatic way due the fact that both have a snare beds but this snare wires are designed to snares with no snare beds? I really need your help

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  3 роки тому +2

      Hey there! I think you’re gonna be fine, 24 isn’t that wide of a wire set. Once you cross 30 strands and especially at 42 you start to have the snare bed design really affect the behavior of the wires. Give them a try! - Cody

    What is your preferred snare wire to eliminate snare and tom buzz?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  6 років тому +1

      We touch on this a bit here in Ep. 11: ua-cam.com/video/l7Hkk3YID9M/v-deo.html A lesser quantity of snare wires will cut down on the snare presence to a certain degree but controlling the buzz has a lot more to do with experimenting with pitch relationships between the snare and toms as well as the setup for the snare drum. To a certain degree, there will almost always be a bit of crosstalk, and that's okay.

      Yeah. I've been watching all your tuning tutorials (great stuff!) and my point was more kind of "how to approach a style" than "how to tune". Since there are quite a lot of changes from genre to genre (f.e. hard hitters big sizes and lot of air between vs. quiet, small and compact) it really changes the dynamics of playing and/or tuning.
      Those my examples were kind of "high, mid and low tune"-mess, but that was just a first idea from top of my head...

    When I set the wires they sit flat on the snare head, but when I tighten up the straps at some point the right side of the snare wire bed is a little bit in the air and that causes them to rattle even if the rest of the are super choked, what's the solution to that ?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum

      Sounds like the straps might not be straight. Check to make sure that they're evenly mounted on both the butt and strainer side. -Ben

  • @glytch5
    @glytch5 4 роки тому

    wait a minute... are you not supposed to tighten and loosen your snare tension with the strainer open? I always took the tension off with the strainger, and then adjusted tension, then closed it up.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому

      There's no hard and fast rule with that. In some cases (often depending on the strainer) it's difficult to do it with the tension engaged. Still, I've yet to see any damage or other negative effects from adjusting tension while the strainer is still on and then you can hear the subtle changes smoothly as you alter the tension. -Ben
