Nureyev invited Yoko Morishita to take the role of a fairy cupid in his Don Quixote on Broadway which ran for about a month in 1983. Yoko made her appearances a few times as a guest dancer. I saw Nureyev on the stage. He was full of vigor and all smiles. There was not an ounce of rumour about his health in 1983. He came back to Broadway a few times more after that. His Don Quixote on Broadway was a great success. Nureyev died on January 6, 1993. R.I.P. Rudolf Nureyev.

Loved watching him whip those movements around ..he WAS the master ...Even at this stage ,feeling the affects of his illness. And having it starting to show in his face,. There was still one else like him. He had those "commanding" looks,. And stage presence....

Rudolph always presents his partner beautifully, matching her style; she’s quick& very petite, but he’s there, keeping her safe & dancing beautifully. He always watches & aides his partners, ballerinas appreciate that their partner is protecting them too, not going thru motions until their solo time.

He was sick and dying. Not that he was less talented, he was weak from his illness. We should be grateful and admire the effort he made for giving us the pleasure, once again, to see him dancing. Nureyev, the greatest. We will always remember you
No es que era menos talentoso. Estaba enfermo y muriendo. Debemos admirar y agradecer el esfuerzo que hizo por darnos, una vez más, el placer de verlo bailar. Nureyev, el más grande. Siempre te recordaremos

He had HIV positive but was not yet into full out AIDs. He had been told he was HIV positive. That came shortly after. By age 55 he was gone. He was already at the end of his career by this time so his dancing was not as good as 20 years earlier.

Nureyev is splendid and Morishita makes a simply lovely partner for him. How nice that he enjoyed dancing with her so late in the game. Since when is it a crime for a dancer to grow older? Fonteyn was stronger at 53 than she was at 23. I know because I saw her and Nureyev live in their prime. The basic integrity, full turn out and beauty of line are all still there in him. Why are people so afraid of age. And if you love him, you wouldn't even be speaking of his illness. Think of the courage it took for him to keep dancing when he was ill. Have some respect.

@pediatrapaola I think that's unfair to say. Footage of him doing Don Quixote from the 1970's with Lucette Aldous shows element of brilliance, as a dancer and as a choreographer, and so does The Sleeping Beauty with Veronica Tennant, There will never be another dancer like him. He had the passion and determination like no other, as well as a raw, amazing talent.

A lot of foolish comments being made on here and mostly by people who have no profile picture of their own face on display. What's all that about, eh? Unlike Mr Nureyev, they are clearly too afraid to step out in public and to show their face to the world while making their negative crticisms about an art they have little or no experience of performing in public at this level of excellence. Rudolf Nureyev himself set the standard in the beginning for others to follow afterwards, so it counts for nothing for jumped-up self-styled 'experts' to come along much later and to state 'how it should be'.

I find the pdd incredibly moving, his partnering is actually exemplary in this clip. Morishita really sparkles here, reminiscent of the Dame herself...Saw him in SB a few years prior to this (1981, Coliseum in London) Yes, his dancing was sadly diminished...bit of a shocker, really...

  • @lochXnessie

Everything I have read about RN states he was diagnosed in 1984, but the doctor who treated him (and made the diagnosis) estimated that Nureyev contracted aids as early as 1979. So even if he didn't know it yet in 1983, his body did. And it shows - sad.
It was in 1979 that the medical profession started to recognize an unusual anti-immune disease, which seemed only to affect homosexuals. So if Nureyev's doctor is correct about when Rudolf contracted, what was to become known as Aids, then Nureyev WAS one of the first to be infected!
He also had copious sex with multiple (anonymous) partners. That he lived as long as he did is an indication of how strong his Will Power was. Even when he was extremely ill, he continued to travel for performance engagements - if not to dance, then to conduct orchestras, or to choreograph ballets.
I have clicked on this video many times, but couldn't watch. This is the first time I've been able to watch the whole clip. Truly sad...
Even so, thank you for posting this bit of history

Sadly, Rudi danced another 10 years after this and it got way, way worse (especially when AIDS impacted his body). He really should have retired in the late 70s and left his legacy intact. He had already danced far more frequently than any other male ballet dancer, had been incredibly hard on his body and had nothing to prove... but he loved the glamor, the stage and the money.

And what else did he really have? No family-Dame Margot was already dead. Rudy longed for a son, but it was too late for that. He did have a couple of long term relationships from this era but he was still searching for something. His entire life was onstage. There was nothing for him but the dance by this point.

According to Wikipedia, he "tested positive for HIV in 1984, but for several years he simply denied that anything was wrong with his health. Nureyev began a marked decline only in the summer of 1991 and entered the final phase of the disease in the spring of 1992." In other words, this performance was a year before he found out he was HIV-positive. And yes, he's definitely not at his best: in the solo that starts at 6:17 he looks like he's forcing himself through the steps. :-(

Rudolf was furious with his partner, and let it know once the show was over.
She had the technique, but no sense of her role and was smiling mechanically, as if frozen. Dancing is also about expressing, communicating emotion, which is what Rudolf has always done on stage. But here, with a robot, nothing was working.
They had rehearsed for a long time, and in the end, nothing happened... Hence his closed expression and his way of leaving the stage, after greeting the audience.

I don't see it. There are other videos of them dancing together in different ballets.
It was more likely he was feeling really ill but decided to dance anyway. You can see that she is worried for him. She keeps checking on him.
The abrupt end was that he had to get off the stage and rest. He couldn't leave her on the stage alone, so he took her with him. It looks abrupt.

@pediatrapaola Basically he looks like he hasn't taken class for a year, and only took part time classes the years before.

Unfortunately he was not really good in this performance, his technical skill were ablittle weak, he seemed tired.

Rudolf Nureyev, a normally breath-taking dancer, isn't impressive in here. he looks like a rookie that didn't practice enough before the show. is this his worst performance?

blackrobi84 pediatrapaola Rudolf was furious with his partner, and let it know once the show was over.
She had the technique, but no sense of her role and was smiling mechanically, as if frozen. Dancing is about expressing, communicating emotion, which is what Rudolf has always done on stage. But here, with a robot, nothing was working.
They had rehearsed for a long time, and in the end, nothing happened... Hence his closed expression and his way of leaving the stage, after greeting the audience.

@koeniginreina rudy was a good dancer untill end of 60's west did him famous but surely not a better dancer ,in his first 40's saw him many times ,and alas he was already a very bad dancer, but people seemed not seeing this,he was rudy ,and they loved him despite his awful dancing.but anyway he deserves respect for his contribution in general to ballet development in west.surely never was the best ,this should be out of discussion.

Boy, ARROGANT exit at the end!! He literally walks in front of her while pushing her upstage and behind him. Just to be in front of her for the applause. Horrible!! The dancer always showcases his ballerina as he escorts her offstage!! He knows better! And she is such a tiny thing! I wonder if she smacked him in the wings!!

Nureyev var ikke ligefrem indspireret af den japanske partner.
