    to be honest, this should've been like this from the beginning if companies weren't so greedy. Matter changes everything and should be headache and more choice of smart device to buy :D

      I think it needed to be a bit chaotic for competition to help build the infrastructure. There have been attempts to do this before. It's why we have had "works with" products.

    Thank you for explaining so clearly. (I just wish I had seen it two weeks ago). I recently attempted to begin a smart home experience by buying a light globe that I wanted to have turn on and off at a particular time. The salesperson in the store suggested a Nanoleaf globe (which was Matter enabled) and told me I would only need HomeKit which is on my 2015 Apple tv.
    I was able to set up the light globe through the Nanoleaf app, but when I tried to make the timer automation I discovered that this could only be done through Apple HomeKit which required a border router. I called the store where I had purchased the globe and the salesperson was unaware of the border router requirement. He suggested I call Apple Care, which I did. I spoke to a HomeKit specialist who was also not familiar with border thread router. I explained that from my research I had discovered that I would need to either spend $150 on a HomePod mini (the cheapest price in Australia), or a new Apple tv ( $250). I thought that this was ridiculous to spend that money to make a $30 light globe switch on and off automatically. I ended up returning the light globe.

    FIRST video I've come across so far, and I've been watching a LOT, that laid out what Matter actually is for someone with zero background knowledge and what's needed to start setting things up (i.e. my AppleTV4K as the central 'manager'). Thank you!

    I’ve had this device for about a year and I really like it as a hub for the home. What I would wish for, would be a better Calendar system in it, or even a way to have the calendar remain as my screen constantly.

    7 months later. A Matter smart home explained: not that smart. If you’re already mostly configured with Zigbee, Zwave, etc, do not begin swapping out just to have Matter. It’s been badly implemented, with no real standardization, by the very companies that created this ‘standard’.

    Thanks for breaking it down. I use LG ThinQ as my eco system. If I’m saying that right. LG doesn’t have a speaker or audio device that uses ThinQ but I did see i can add Matter compatible devices to my home eco system. So hoping to find a speaker to add to my home devices that I can control through the LG ThinQ app.

    I bought a Wiz bulb that said was getting a firmware update to support Matter, two months later it got it. It wasn’t connecting as a Matter device. So I bought an Orein bulb by Aidot with the Matter logo and that connected as a Matter device. However, I bought a Tapo smart outlet by TP-Link that has the Matter logo and that did not connect as a Matter device. I have two Echo Dot 3rd gen and one Echo Show 5. So it’s all over the place. Firmware is all up to date.

    Doesn't solve the issue of needing a connection to servers to make devices work. Someday google/Amazon will ask for a monthly fee for the service, and someday the service itself will close. Home assistant is still not very good for regular users

    Pretty lame that they don't make the basic echo a hub so you have to spend some money to get that feature even if you already have an echo. I do have the latest Apple TV however so I can use that. I'm assuming it can be used as a hub with Amazon compatible devices that are also matter compatible.

    Ok. I'm a huge smart device advocate and have been writing with things like Home assistant for years. Bluntly, boo on Matter. It is junk and poorly designed. A further sign that google has totally lost its way. Boo! When the smoke explanation is 8 minutes long and still leaves a long time technologist baffled it's junk. Even you look annoyed most of this video. Matter needs to not matter to users. Boo google. Get it together.

    What has got me is that I will have to replace ALL my smart home stuff. This is a absolute joke. According to what I have read is Echo now supports Thread and Matter. But devices that are thread compatible as of yet will not connect to my Echo which is now a thread border router. I have three Nanoleaf Essential Bulbs which will work with my updated Echo. I cannot afford to replace these. So frustrating, it seems Matter is just away for companies to make more money.

      @@SmartHomeHASHTAGS I find using a WiFi / Cloud system it can be a bit hit and miss with reliability. I find it frustrating that a new protocol comes along and you can’t use it. Instead to use it you have to replace the tech you have. Even with a mesh system the problems still exist, bulbs offline, devices unresponsive, rebooting the device. It can all be a pain in the ass. 😂🤣😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • @SteveDOES
      @SteveDOES  Рік тому +2

      I have just ordered a second HomePod Mini for the Nanoleaf bulb in my moms reading light to connect too so she can turn it on and off, I hope thread connectivity will improve the reliability of this for her. Still going keep the Amazon Echo & Dots. Got a mixed bag of smart home gadgets. My Yeelight bulbs will not be updated to matter, the Hue bulbs I am not sure about, Tapo smart plugs aren’t going to be updated, Not sure about Govee. The Nanoleaf Essentials Matter bulbs from what they have told me will need a Nanoleaf light fitting with a built in border router for the bulbs to work with Alexa.
      Matter was supposed to make things easier, it’s fast becoming a cash cow. I won’t be buying anything else until this does what they promised. 👍🏻👍🏻 But I was thinking about getting Aquara🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔.

    You don't have to worry about what connects to what. You have to think Thread not Matter. Thread just treat as Zigbee's bastard step brother. More devices better mesh. Onvis has a Thread Smart plug thats Matter for $10 a pop. Buy a 4 pack of those and just as you would plug a smart plug in different rooms for zigbee, do the same with Thread. Matter over wifi devices, you just treat like any other wifi device, except they are universal you NEVER need to bother with a brands app.

      Absolutely true. For the things supported I chose Samsung Smartthings and now all my devices talk to each other, are automated and routined. The Thread Router for me is my Samsung Q990C Soundbar, but my TV can be one too but not required. Smartthings automaticallys keeps the devices up to date by regularly checking for firmware updates, which is great for me because I can completely ditch Eve, Nanoleaf, Govee........all horrible apps :) I'm up to 98 Matter devices and he's absolutely correct about 'self healing', when something goes wrong, rarely, with my network, the Thread Hub starts contacting them in the most efficient manner to get them back online. ZERO CLOUD involvement
