Actually it's designed for, but not only, firing against incoming missiles at multiple times the speed of sound. Gotta take it down otherwise everybody in the ship is in a bad scenario.
Better a million rounds to try to stop an incoming missile or fastboat loaded with explosives than 500 million in SGLI, burials, & trying to fund the VA & repair our battleship.
