How to open and fix an Azus laptop - no power

  • This laptop would not turn on. Often total electronic failures like a completely dead unit are easier to fix than if the computer only partially worked. The problem with this laptop was the broken connection behind the plug jack. It must have been yanked. To fix it I had to take it totally apart. It took just under 2 hours for me to complete it but I had no video guide to follow and I had never seen it done. So you should be able to do it much faster. If your laptop has no signs of power be sure that it is not just your AC adapter that is bad. I have a video on fixing that too. You should get a multimeter if you are going to work on electronics. Even walmart sells them for under $10. If you have questions just ask! Good luck!

thank you for the up load. I hate this Asus piece of rubbish I bought some years ago. Today finally , thanks to your guide I was able to get the unit apart and clean it. It kept shutting down, turned out to be a very blocked and dirty heat sink. Thank you once again.

Thanks for this video. I have probably same problem like in this video. Dissasembled it right now. But I have just a tiny tiny split. Need to push the charger cable with my finger
against laptop to have power. If I just forget it , all of a sudden it shuts off. Especially when gaming.

Is there a specific type of tape that needs to be used for the ribbon cable that is connected to the motherboard?

The brush is nice, but use some compressed air to clean the fan too. It's gonna make a mess. :)

Your battery is “surging” (supplying more power than the laptop can safely handle), therefore your laptop will not allow itself to turn on to pretect itself. You need to purchase a new battery.

The power adapter and cable to my HP431 (with the battery removed) delivers power to the laptop as there is a light next to the jack when plugged in. While plugged in, when I press the POWER ON button, the light on the POWER button itself and the light on the WIFI button came up for a split second, then went off. No fan, nothing, just dead. This laptop had thermal shut down problem before, but I bought a cooling fan to rectify this overheating problem. This problem persists for the last several months, for a couple of times, I managed to turn it on, worked for several months, then it unexpected shut down. Do you think this is a power cable issue similar to the one shown on your video?
    Appreciate your comments.

This is a good video, though I don't think I can come close to doing this with my ASUS. It pisses me off that they apparently design and manufacture these to have problems with the power port. Mine is only a couple of years old, has been gently used (no accidents, or anything to cause problems), but it will only intermittently acknowledge that it's plugged in, and won't charge the battery much of the time. This all started about a month ago, and I discovered that it's a widespread problem with ASUS computers in general. It's really annoying.

Hi HBT. Hope you can help me. i have a clevo 11.6 inch laptop with somehow similar problem as your asus video, the only difference when you turn it ON there is no power light beside the power button, no sound from the fan and there's three blinks from the light on the battery indicator then thats it its off again. i tried it with only the power supply w/o the battery still no progress and the same thing with battery with the power supply On. The last time i used it i properly shut it down, there was no sudden blackout that would indicate overheat. so far thats what i have observed, hope you can help me with my problem..thnx in advance

G74SX No Boot, black screen, caps lock & numlock lights on
I have a Asus G74sx 17" laptop last night is wouldn't power on at all. No lights nothing. When you turn it on, the BD-ROM drive makes a powerup noise, no BIOS logo comes up, numlock & caps lock are on, keyboard lights are on I checked several forums and tried the complete discharge. I removed bat, ram, and held power button down. for 45 sec. tried it twice though it worked for a while to boot to safe mode. Then it went down so I tried it again and now the power lights remain on (with no batt in just ac adapter). the power light, ac light and hd lights just remain on. then it shuts off after a while. orange charging light blinks. please help. I tried it again on day 3 and now I just get white lights (hdd, .comcaps lock, and power) I hear hdd spin up and fan and they just remain on even with no batt just ac. if AC is removed all pwr goes off and nothing.
LET me add I have had the unit for 4 yrs no problems till now.
Please help if anyone is out there that can answer this. PLEASE!!!!

Ya my sister had this problem before. So basically what you do is run the 2 test to make sure that it is the hard drive even though its pretty obvious. If any fails, bad hard drive. So since you dropped it, we know it is physical damage to the hard drive and can't be repaired. If it was software, it can be repaired. So just get a new HDD, and replace the HDD. Now you might have to install the operating system you want, like windows, linux, ect. Sometimes they already have the operating system already installed. I hope this helps you even though this is a month later, but this can help others with the same problem.

Asus x43s *short circuited* just behind the *power connector* , took it to the repairer guy here, he took care of it with machines (like an oscilloscope and everything..) and he kinda fixed the burned thing he told me that now it's getting powered normally (he showed me the *voltage* on the *motherboard* with the voltmeter after the charger is plugged in) but it doesnt start seems to start when he presses the *power button*
/!\ Edit : he didnt mount the computer he just connected the motherboard with the rest of the computer elements as i saw he told me it should start up after pressing the power button
    PLEASE HELP

Well thats exactly the way you don't want to go....
You can do it and it will be functional, for some time, but it will brake again.
The simpliest and cheapest way is to change the connector itself ca. $10.
This repair is quite dangerous, of course you can do it but this connector is quite stressed and the soldered bond is going to brake in some time, which in most cases will resolve in a shortcut and getting your motherboard K.O. And thats going to cost more than simply $10

Perhaps to open up, but their quality beats many others for their price. I've had acer, lenovo, toshiba, dell, macs, a chrome-book, and others; Asus is the only hardware I've been able to rely on consistently. I've had 3 of their laptops and 1 desktop.
