- There are so many different ways to target a Garrick, the Gentleman of the sea. In this video Ray Thompson the Trace Guru shows us how to make a live bait trace and how to rig it up. This is the "sliding with circle hooks" trace designed to rig up a live Mackerel, Massbunker, Shad or Mullet.

If I hook my mullet like this they allways end up tangling up the slide.. If I hook them in the back it works like a charm.
In the back between the eyes and the dorsal fin is a great spot to hook up a live bait too.

Hi James, thanks for your comments. We have since started using a black shirt and black screen to make it easier to see the mono.
Do you actually need to do the nylon and zip tie? Can't you just put your hook through the bait instead?

It was an old HMG range, it was discontinued about 10 years ago.

Would a Black cable tie instead of red be better for the mackerel considering the reason for using a black hook
Yes a black cable tie would work very well too. Sometimes the red looks like blood and gets the fish excited to feed. Black would be more discreet.
Can you use the same trace for fishing for kob?
The trace would be slightly different. We will film Ray doing the Kob trace this coming Monday.
Yes you can but thers much beter ways than using a big swivel
Where would one buy heat shrink if not able to get to a Kingfisher outlet? (Or can I buy an alternative at a hardware?)
Yes quite right, you can find them at most hardware shops. They work a treat!

If choosing to slide a Shad, does it matter which method we use? (I.e. can I use the dacron method with a Shad?)
You can rig a shad with any of the methods shown. Dacron or swivel it won't make much of a difference. Tight lines!
