Cheers Ozzy :) Unfortunately such museums are not too common, so a long drive is always necessary. For me it was about 700km one way. Its a great place though and worth a visit, especially when there is a big interest in WW2 and Cold War era tanks.
If I ever make it anywhere near Bavaria, you will have to take me there.. ;) Certainly a museum I'd love to visit, lots of classic tanks and some vehicles I have no clue, as to what they were.. but I saw some favourites of mine (shame the 103 C wasn't in splinter camo) and some I'd like to know more about one day. Great slide show of photos, very enjoyable.. and certainly some very good reference photos for you, no doubt.. :)
Well, actually this is not located in Bavaria at all, the contrary is the case. This is very close to Hamburg up in North Germany. But, despite being not in Bavaria, it is well worth a visit :)
Moin Michael, sehr schöne Slideshow - das Museum ist schon ein lohnendes Ausflugsziel. Vor einigen Jahren war ich einmal zum Event „Stahl auf der Heide“ und konnte einige Panzer in Aktion sehen, dass würde ich gerne nochmals machen. Mal gucken, ob die Lage es dieses Jahr zulässt. 1:31 That is a nice shot, with the Sherman, T-34 and Pz. IV. You can see the sizes of each tank, relative to the others. 5:00 Had to look up the West German TD with the two guns. Did not know there was such a thing as a VT tank. Nice.
Indeed, i think the new arrangement of the display is really well done. Putting the three major tanks of WW2 next to each other gives us so much context.
Bitteschön! Das ist immer so ein Thema und eine sehr wichtige Frage. Das meiste aus der Zeit vor 1950 ist in irgendeiner Form restauriert worden aus irgendwelchen Schrotthaufen, deshalb darf man nicht davon ausgehen, dass die Farben 100% authentisch sind. Teilweise sind die Lackierungen in diesem Museum sehr phantasievoll, aber es gibt natürlich gewisse Limits bei der Restaurierung.
