  • An off-duty pilot is facing 83 counts of attempted murder, accused of shutting down a plane's engines mid-flight. According to investigators Joe Emerson was in the jump seat of the plane when it all went down. Crew members had to tackle Emerson, and quickly turn the engines back on. Keith Jeffries, former TSA and VP of K2 Security Screening Group. Family members say Emerson is "a family man."

    This is reminiscent of how a few years ago, a German co-pilot locked pilot out of cockpit, and purposely crashed plane into a mountain.

    I flew the E175 for six years. I've been in the airlines for ten years, at my fourth and hopefully final company now. I have taken a psych test twice. These are in the form of questions like, I sometimes feel sad: strongly agree, agree, etc. You've all seen them. Delta has for a long time used one of these in addition to a second day interview for pilots with a psychologist. One of the ways you can fail is actually for inconsistency; by trying to outsmart the test. At my current major airline, nothing. There was a ten year job and address history, and I had to provide a lot of references whom they did call.
    My point is, any company, if they even do a psych eval or background check, almost always only does it at the date of hire. It's a snapshot. Are you mentally healthy now? Or have you been up until now? But the problem is, that's all useless if you don't follow up. Things happen to people. Marriages fall apart, children die, finances get out of control, contract negotiations (especially at airlines) drag on, and suddenly your dream airline is the enemy. Mental health is a moving target. Nobody does a follow up. And in the airlines, and under FAA jurisdiction, it is incredibly hard to get mental health care without jeopardizing your career. Even ADHD can end your career, even if you can do the job perfectly. One big issue is that that the majority of this is predominantly run by white men - yes I am one of them - (the airlines, the pilots, the FAA), who have ironically, the highest rates of suicide in the country. UA-cam creator Tank the Tech, did a reaction to a long three part song by Lorna Shore (very very heavy metal) that dealt with suicide and depression, and he said something that really stuck with me. "Toxic Masculinity." This idea that you are weak if you show emotion and have a mental health issue. Go watch the hospital tent scene in the movie "Patton" and you'll see what I'm getting at.
    There are almost always signs when you look after the fact. The German Wings pilot, the FedEx guy who attacked a crew with axes, the Columbine kids. They all had signs beforehand. None got help. I have a bad feeling about how this will turn out. This guy will get what he "deserves." His career and life are done. He will be used as an example. Meanwhile, they will try to add regulation to make pilots' already hard lives harder instead of creating more systems to help pilots save their careers.

      As an E175 flyer, can you tell me if the fire handles can be pulled without there being a fire? On Boeings, you have to additionally push a hidden override switch. When you do a fire test, you can hear the handles unlocking.

      Had he succeeded in turning the engines off, what happens? The plane doesn’t just drop out of the sky. I’m sure there’s some gliding happening while they start the engines back up…right?

    • @ImperrfectStranger
      @ImperrfectStranger 8 місяців тому

      @@YTuser999 Correct. On most jets, if you idle engines, you can usually travel 3 times the altitude (divided by 1000) before you hit sea level. e.g. From 35,000 feet, you would glide 105 nautical miles or so. Turning off the engines completely shortens that distance, but the plane wouldn't fall out of the sky.
      Because the engines are windmilling, the engine-driven hydraulic pumps would provide enough hydraulic power to operate the basic flight controls. Batteries or other devices would power the instruments. Restarting the engines may be done with the help of windmilling engines or with an Auxilliary Power Unit (APU) which is battery started. Some engines are a little fussy about altitude and may not start at really high altitudes, but assuming you are not flying over mountains, you would be able to attempt many restarts.

    As a 42+ year airline employee, this one has me baffled. None of it makes sense. If he wanted to crash a plane, he could have waited until his next flight when he'd actually be at the controls of a 737. Why do it as a jumpseater? Also, how is it possible that he was not successful, at least on one engine? Pulling a fire handle is about as difficult as turning a doorknob. You'd think he'd surprise the pilots enough to get at least one of them pulled. Also, it's difficult enough to get out of the Captain's or First Officer's seats under normal circumstances, having a guy fighting with you, who has a lot more space in the cockpit than you do, is not going to be easy unless he simply didn't try to overpower the pilots. Every news station seems to have the same ATC audio, which appears to pick up in the middle of the incident, after the jumpseater was subdued. I wonder why no one has gone back and gotten the initial ATC contact? I sure hope they pull both the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and digital flight data recorder (DFDR) to make sure an incident actually took place and that it wasn't the other 2 pilots who should have been locked up. (now that would make for a good movie..)

      Irrational acts cannot be understood by rational analysis. Tossing out an alternative scenario requiring a conspiracy between the two pilots is not helpful. I’m sure the authorities will do what is necessary to figure this out.

      @Part_121 8 місяців тому +1

      @@dummgelauft You're thinking about the old days.. This airplane is only 4 months old and has a modern, combined, DFDR and CVR in one unit. As far as the voice recording capabilities go, it has a 2-hour recording time. Pilots can erase it with the erase button, but only with the aircraft on the ground, with the parking brake set. I have no idea what Horizon's policies & procedures are but, hopefully, they tell the pilots to NOT erase the CVR if there was an incident in flight. This dude acted up about 35 minutes prior to landing at the diversion airport, KPDX.

      None of it makes sense because you haven't heard all the facts. He admitted to taking magic mushrooms some time before the flight. His actions weren't rational. He obviously didn't know what he was doing. He later tried to open a cabin door at the rear of the aircraft (even though he was intelligent enough, when not under the influence, to know that this would be impossible due to cabin pressure differential).

    The scary thing about this is that he could have done this when he was actually flying the plane as one of the two pilots and if there was no one in the jump seat or the other pilot had left the cockpit for some reason it could be a different story. Apparently now if one pilot leaves the cockpit one of the cabin crew is required to go to the cockpit so that pilots are not left alone but if it was a female flight attendant she might not be able to stop him.

    If he was hitching a ride to "work" then why would he have been up 40 hours and doing mushrooms before boarding this plane? I think there needs to be a lot more digging before letting this thing go and possibly getting off or a slap on the wrist. Something doesn't smell right about this situation. We all have bad days but responsible good people don't go to work after being up 40 straight hours while doing "shrooms" and especially with so many lives he's responsible for. Another thing that bothers me is he says he's been depressed for 4 months, I can tell when my husband or my kids are feeling down or if something is wrong or bothering them and I talk to them about it. I've had coworkers I could detect were having a depressed day and when in management I knew when an employee needed to take a day off or seek help if an ongoing problem existed. Spouces who care along with friends and certainly bosses can sense when one is having a problem, just saying and yes it's a high stress job and a very responsible one even more reason to take a pulse in the life of family, friend or an employee. even more reason to notice someone your putting your life in their hands like a copilot etc. And why would someone in a happy family life who loved his kids and was happy want to take his life let alone the lives of 83 souls on board as well? Unless someone is deeply depressed or having a mental breakdown they don't want to die let along murder 82 other people with them. I never understood why suicidel people have to kill their families and or others lives with them those other people had lives and a right to them. Someone should have noticed something was off and guestioned what was wrong. The look between him and his lawyer was a questioning look if your paying attention like "what's up or anything new or what are you thinking my chances are?" One would think all this would have been discussed between them before a court appearence and then he was taken back out after conferring with his attorney. Just seems odd to me. I have a lot of guestions that bother me. Do you?

      All they would have had to do is push a button that unlocks the cockpit door and yelled for help, someone on the flight would have been strong enough to subdue him while the other pilots take back control of the plane (long before it would have gotten low enough to crash). If you've ever seen the Mayday episode on Germanwings fight 9525 when co-pilot Andreas Lubitz was left alone in the cockpit (pilot stepped out to use the washroom) all that needed to be done was for the unlock door button to be pushed but Lubitz was on a suicide mission and never let the pilot back into the cockpit. That crash is the main reason why it is now required that at least two flight employees be in the cockpit at all times on commercial flights

    What are the things that could’ve happened? We know the reports of the jump seater pulling the extinguishers but is it impossible it’s something completely different?
    Just saying, this would be a very cunning and unique way to setup a disliked employee. You and your partner just plan this out. Maybe they have a sign and they both create a wrestling around sound. One yells out, “Don’t touch that. You’ll kill us.” Then you can both “subdue him” and “put him in cuffs in the back jumpseat”. Just saying everything isn’t always what it seems. And going solely off of witness statements and audio, can be a hindrance and a road block for potential undiscovered possibilities.
    Note: I don’t know if this is the case here. And hopefully there’s video of the event taking place inside the cockpit. I just bring this up because we as humans are easily misled especially with stories like this popping up before investigations are completed.

      Even though if he shut down one engine, the plane could fly with just one engine without any problems. I'm not an expert of course, but two things could have happened:
      1- the pilots would try to restart the engine, (the one he just turned off and not pulled the fire extinguisher of course) which is somehow possible, but the chances of doing it sucessfully is not high.
      2- the aircraft doesn't fall like a dead bird. It can glide a long distance. The pilots could fly to the closest airport and land safely.

      @ImperrfectStranger 8 місяців тому

      Yes. You just push the handles back into their stowed position. The engines can be restarted using the assistance of airspeed ("windmill start") or by using a battery-started jet engine in the tail (which provides pressurised air to turn the engine). The handles cut off fuel and a few other things, none of which can't be reset.

    What's scary, he could have waited until he was flying himself, with a co-pilot that was inferior in physical strength.. 🤔

    • @chrismac5560
      @chrismac5560 8 місяців тому +1

      All the other pilot who was inferior in physical strength would have had to do is push a button that unlocks the cockpit door and yelled for help, someone on the flight would have been strong enough to subdue him while the other pilot take back control of the plane (long before it would have gotten low enough to crash). That crash is the main reason why it is now required that at least two flight employees be in the cockpit at all times on commercial flights. The only real chance of something like that happening now a days is if both pilots are in on the suicide mission together and neither has remorse/second thoughts part way through

      Artificial intelligence cannot deal with all emergency cases. It’s not as flexible as a badass pilot. It would crash when things happen which the airline didn’t anticipate like it happened many times in Cockpits. Tesla cars are already showing us how inflexible the bots are in extreme cases (million dollar punishments due to death Tesla has )
