It does have some amazing tracks. The underwater boss theme, the post apocalyptic looking world, and that amazing drum heavy track.

One of my biggest gripes about arcade style games; Why the hell do home games have level timers? "Here' s a big level with lot of secrets, ripe for exploring, but we're not going to allow to spend much time doing that."
The level timer is the reason that I never bothered to put in the effort to try and beat the first or second Turrican games without cheating. "Well, you got to the exit, but you took one second too long, so you lose a life."
Level timers are bullshit.
a lot of these things are archaic throwbacks to cheap coin-guzzling arcade tactics. It took until way past the 90's for developers to realise that there was literally no advantage to having these in home games.
The exact same thing happens in Sonic games, the levels are huge and i kinda understand why there is a time limit cuz, you know, gotta go fast, but is till annoying.
@@Urmrgay955 It's like racing games with checkpoint timers. The game keeps track of what position I'm in, so why not let me finish the race? Or at least keep racing until X number of cars cross the finish line and I lose.
On an arcade machine, a timer sort of makes sense because they don't want someone taking an hour to play the game, but on home games, timers are pointless. They only serve to artificially increase the difficulty.
Sometimes I imagine being able to follow the developers around and impose arbitrary time limits on everything they do. "You have 60 seconds to use the bathroom. You have 7 seconds to go up these stairs. You have 3 seconds to dial that phone number. You have 3 minutes to eat lunch."
A timer is a really good way to force you to improve at the controls of the game.

That was fun. Nice to see the clean sweep. I wasn't sure about presentation, but I like the conclusions you reached here. I think Mega Turrican is quite a bit better than Super Turrican. I enjoyed it much more when I played them. It's one game where the increased resolution on the Genesis felt so much better in how it affected the game's design. Not that Super Turrican is bad. It may even be more appealing to those who grew up with the earlier Turrican games. But Mega Turrican is way more my style. Plus it has some actual rotation effects, which must be magic. And I love that plasma rope. Anyway, fun video to watch.
Next episode...Is gonna be one of MY donations...It's gonna be Batman Forever....Oh god...This is DEFINITELY gonna be a "Which one is worse" episode...I mean my god, the control layout is just frigging MUTILATED in those games...A fighting game control scheme in a 2.5D platformer...That doesn't sound like it would work...AT ALL...It also made me wonder why Midway/Netherrealm would think it would work for their Sub-Zero games?

As a huge Turrican fan, I'm looking forward to this! Turrican II for Amiga, has one of the best game soundtracks ever.
All Console Versions are Linear as Hell, no Fun to Play ...
@@AMIGABLUEBIRD The best of the console versions is Mega Turrican. Yeah, its more linear, but its a solid game. It was later ported to the amiga as Turrican 3. The NES super turrican is decent too, it was made by the original creator and has levels like que first 2 games.
Static Substance depends. From the reviews I’ve seen on UA-cam the games look that smidgen worse, and you have to push up on the joystick to jump, right?

Well, they look different, because they are earlier games, however I would say that Turrican 2 visual quality is good enough that it becomes more about crisp Turrican 2 style vs rich Mega Turrican style choice than quality itself. Many Amiga games in general often have 2 issues when compared to console games - wonky controls or animation, but Turrican is actually ok here. Jumping with joystick up is perfectly fine, it depends more on a game's implementation and gameplay design if that input method is ok or not, and in case of Turrican it works quite well. In general jump button is more accurate while joystick up is quicker. However there is a different issue with Turricans on Amiga and that is how those 2 games handle collisions. Turrican 1 and 2 use home computer style of not having any visual cues of taking damage, you walk into enemy and you simply hear buzzing sound while your health bar decreases. Its a design that's been in use since earliest 8bit home computer games and probably has a lot to do with how "homegrown" developers were or hardware limitations. By all means this is inferior way of handling collisions, something no one liked even when they were used to it. To this day I think it is the only thing holding down Turrican II from becoming the ultimate shooting platformer. Yes it is just that good and big open levels to explore are big part of it. Mega Turrican is very good, it has some advantages, someone may even like it more, but in the end it is a different game that has what people see as "Turrican parts" toned down to allow for more "arcade" style. This actually makes comparison hard so I always say "just play both".
@@sloppynyuszi You just can't play Turrican 1 maps with a button to jump, you will fail all the time. Of course you need a proper joystick instead of a d-pad.

I have never heard of this game but I would like to that it's a true hidden gem. The Sega's one is much better, however, the SNES version isn't bad either.
I would say Snes OST sounds better (like the boss theme and stage 1-3) and some sfx I liked (The laser that the jumping robot shoots) but yeah Sega nailed in many aspects of gameplay, more levels and stuff.

The Genesis soundtrack sounded much more rockin to me, and the SNES sounded muffled.

Yes. The clean electronic sound has aged much better.
I noticed that. Sometimes the SNES version sounded kinda "light" or "fuzzy" where as the Sega sounds were pretty unorthodox they were super clear and we'll balanced. A perfect example is compare the soundtrack of earthworm jim on Sega and Snes. The Snes version sounds very blah and less pronounced than the Segas soundtrack.
But snes sounding muffled is no surprise, it was its own trade mark lol.. MD version sounds excellent!..

Actually this game shows how "goofy" and compromised Mode 7 can be. The effects in Super Turrican mostly look worse than the ones in Mega Turrican and when Mode 7 occurs, backgrounds are reduced to minimal because Mode 7 can't apply to sprites but only to background!
Yeah, the graphics aren't even close - should be a clear and decisive win for SEGA.
They even managed to get some transparency effects in there. The rotation and scaling effects are quite smooth too, in Mega Turrican.
I think the developers were quite familiar with Sega's hardware, or had experience with similar architecture (Amiga)
That's a limitation for mode 7 as it can only do so with background elements, while the Genesis version used software rotation, not hardware rotation, the ones in mega look very pixelated when doing so, and really it's only applied to very minor things other than the title screen, even then with mode 7 bosses you could implement foreground elements to look like background elements, after all Super was rushed.
I agree the mode 7 actually takes away from the overall experience.
How, literally it's only applied to the title screen, and 2 bosses and they look fine although it's missing backgrounds but it can be covered up.

@@Rodzilla97 Super Turrican would have won graphics forsure. I think they picked the right match up though Mega Turrican and Super Turrican were in development around the same time and share some of the same assets.
@@supersexysega i dunno, i don't think it was a fair fight. 15 bosses vs 4. super turrican 2 has 14 bosses i think and is the best turrican game on the snes, it would have made for a much closer battle. this one was a pointless blowout

Loved Super Turrican *2* back when I was younger; I was obsessed with it as I grew up with the Turrican series on my Commodore 64 (and on a friend's Amiga. Turrican 2 for the Amiga is probably the best of the lot).

@@judgegroovyman I could beat Turrican on the C64, but not Turrican 2 without cheating! I could beat Super Turrican 2 as I played it to DEATH. The soundtrack rocked on that (another Chris Huelsbeck masterpiece).
I remember back that ST2 got 'okay' reviews, but I loved it. So many cool, varied stages and graphics.
@@thevoivod I also love Super Turrican 2 on the SNES. I got addicted to the series with Turrican II on the C64. For anyone who doesn't know, the Genesis/Mega Drive game Universal Soldier is really Turrican II but with the flying part removed and replaced by original on foot part, and they modified the character sprite. The game was developed as Turrican II then got a very late change to cash in on the movie. Great game.
This episode was MEGA awesome! Always loved this game on Sega. The SNES one is cool though the Sega has such a unique soundtrack with so many more detailed graphics and levels. The Sega version is also the smoothest out of the 3..... Yea I said 3 I haven't forgetten about the Amiga version. Great episode and looking forward to more!

The genesis version came out a year after the snes ver.
It was refined and tuned to be a better playing experience.
Plus it has a lot of extra content in it.

Great video. I was worried the "clarity" on Sound was going to give SNES the win, but when that gritty punchy sound is used right, it can destroy Sony's sound chip and this does. The fart sound, true, is annoying though, but with a soundtrack that cool sounding best sound is on SEGA. Good video guys. Happy to see you're still getting them out there.
Great episode! I’ve loved the Turrican series since playing it on the Commodore Amiga. You guys mentioned that Super Turrican felt incomplete; Well, it actually is in some way. At the time of release, Factor 5 didn’t have the money to spend on a bigger rom cart. So they needed to fit the game on a 4Mbit cart only. Thus several omissions were made to fit the game such as levels, certain details and sounds. Interestingly, there is a directors cut version that was available on the Analogue Super Nt (FPGA Super Nintendo console) that adds all the missing elements. Mega Turrican was actually first being developed for the Amiga as Turrican 3. However, the Amiga was beginning to decline in sales and was quickly redesigned for the Genesis/Mega Drive and released there. Shortly after that, they then took the Sega version and ported it back to the Amiga. So Turrican 3 on the Amiga is a slightly cut back version of the Sega game.

Batman Forever will be an interesting one because while I think it looks and sounds way worse on the Genesis, I have heard it plays much worse on the SNES, so could be the first complete turnabout of the show.
It's probably going to be a battle to see which one is worse, that's usually what they do with shitty games. And man, are they both shit.

Pretty much sums it up. The SNES version will end up as the worst one for the loading times everytime you go into a different room which happens alot and for the gameplay being worse then the Genesis version.
AVGN did talk about Batman Forever on SNES and it was horrible due to the Mortal Kombat combo controls and wish I kept mine. Sega Genesis version is really horrible if you have a three button controller

Nice Episode as always, but Super Turrican 2 would be the better competitor for Mega Turrican. In an interview back then the devs where talking of the troubles they had with the SNES Hardware. So they made Super Turrican a simple yet solid platformer that would fit a 4 MB cartridge. With Super Turrican 2 you have all your effects stuff and gameplay variety which is missing in Super Turrican.
No way. Mega Turrican and Super Turrican are the akin games and in fact, both of them were developed at the same time. Super Turrican 2 was developed much later than either of these two. The problem is, Mega Drive doesn't have an akin game to Super Turrican 2 (ie, a Mega Turrican 2) unfortunately. I guess this was because of all of the publishing problems Factor 5 always had with their Mega Drive games, including Mega Turrican which was delayed one year of release because Konami was going to release and then it pulled it off. Data East had to publish it in the end. Heck, even the Amiga conversion of Mega Turrican (ie, Turrican 3) came first because of this fact. And Factor 5 also couldn't release their Mega Drive version of Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures because of publishing issues with US Gold and it's still unreleased up to this day (though it appears that it may receive and after-market release sometime in the future). Yeah, I think the sum of all this is the reason why there never was a Mega Turrican 2 on the Mega Drive to compete with Super Turrican 2.
Mega Turrican is better to me.
But the soundtrack absolutely sucks for Super Turrican 2.
Super Turrican 2 looks really cool, but it always felt a little off to me.
Probably worth mentioning that the SNES version featured surround sound, one of the earliest console games to do so (SNES Jurassic Park came first). Mega Drive still had the better soundtrack though.
What point does it make if almost EVERY tv set at the time was mostly stereo?.. it would be a nice detail if surround sound were a thing like ever... it never reched a place on popular consumer space till dvd came out and maybe bluray.. but even today the standard is stereo still.

Gabriel Martinez I’m sorry if I’m misunderstanding but it really is true, most TVs only had 1 speaker. A lot of people had better audio setups with multiple speakers but usually the TV itself could only produce mono, hence why the Model 1 Mega Drive only supports mono output over its usual cables. *EDIT:* nvm I was given false info, I did some more research and by the early 1990’s a lot of TVs had stereo. Still though, a lot of people would’ve still had mono TVs. Surround was pretty overkill regardless of stereo or mono in the 90’s, but it’s cool that it supported it.
@@justanotheryoutubechannel Megadrive had stereo output too. Do some research. From the front There's an output stereo jack. In model 1, and in model 2 you got it from the back. 🤷🏼♂️ yeah, in 90's people had mono and stereo tv sets. There's not a single 5.1 surround tv set I know of. Sorry.

Yeah a lot of times using mode seven could have big disadvantage compared to using regular sprites, since it acts on your background layer. Thats why you always see these flat colors and gradiants when you have mode 7 bosses. Kind of looks cheap and its always for some lame rotation or scaling. And since they are backround and not sprites, a lot of times they kind of interact weirdly with the characters, with vaeguely defined hit boxes. Mode 7 for anything else than bground i think has aged the worst in super nintendo games, impressive back then, but sega managed to do some impressive and more timeless bosses and gimmicks with clever use of sprites, like the multijointed bosses in things like gunstar heroes or castlevania bloodlines.
Honestly the bosses in Mega Turrican aren't that great, and go down as easily as any other Turrican boss that isn't from T1 and ST2, rebound breaks the game's difficulty and makes the bosses feel like filler.
@@turrican3839 I've personally only played mega turrican, and i enjoyed the bosses fine enough. Its true that they are on the easy side, but since you have to beat the game in one sitting and since there are so many of them i didn't mind. Still took me some tries to beat the game my first time. Overall I enjoyed them, they have cool designs with big detail sprites and they add variety constantly to the experience

Still though Sega's Shadow run is by far the more superior game and I think it deserves a re count.
But on this one land slide proven Seeeega genisis is superior.

You guys reminded me that I own both of these games on the Wii Virtual Console. And yeah the differences were so jarring to me I thought they were two completely separate games with no relation to the plot.
As a *Super Nintendo fan,* i've got to admit, this episode was one sided, but in a fair and square way, i totally agreed with Dan.
As a Sega fan I’m biased but in most of these reviews I’m biting my nails and rooting for the Sega Genesis whilst also acknowledging the Super Nintendos superior graphics, controller and sound. I grew up with both of these consoles and I love them both :P
This video was too 1 sided, how did Mega Turrican seriously win in *every* department, graphics should've been a tie, so is sound, gameplay to ST since it has better level design, weapons, and enemy placements, yet again nobody ever reads my reasons and proceed to only listen to Mega throbbers.

Totally. I used I envy my friends who had consoles while I had the Amiga. Then I saw how games like Turrican, Chaos Engine and Desert Strike compared across the systems and I never looked back.
Yeah, it's not really even a contest.
Sega mauls that version too. It's got some interesting elements too it still the Sega version is smoother and more refined in game play and like the SNES it's missing like half its backgrounds. Also the music sounds so choppy on the Amiga, this could also be because the Amiga version is kind of makeshift port of the Sega version.

Shinobi 3 will win it's a perfect game. Hagane is a very good game and definitely took inspiration from Shinobi 3 and makes the best sense as a comparison video.

Aww snap. Wasn't expecting to see a new episode today! As a musician, I know I can count on Dan to comment on the awesome music. Don't know about the snes version, but the Genesis version, and the series in general, just has amazing music. Excited to watch this when it drops!

8:11 I died laughing at the discourse of the ugly cutscenes, especially the large chin.
I knew it'd be Mega Turrican. I was a SNES guy 'growing up' (nearly 40 now, ouch!) but it was games like this, Contra and Castlevania that made me turn around and notice the MD as an equal to the SNES and that they both possess stronger and weaker iterations of similar or the same games. As it happens, I'm actually now a full on MD > SNES guy nowadays and that didn't come easy. I still adore the SNES, but the MD has more of the sort of stuff I wanna play as of 2020 ❤️👍

@@NeoGeoNinja81 The Director's Cut is a massive disappointment after so many years of Factor 5 hyping that. It's just a new section/sub-level in the snow area of levels. Mega Turrican is still much better than that.

What's there to "cope" about anymore? The console wars have been over for like 25 years now. Both systems can easily be emulated and we have the ability to pick and choose games that came out on both. No need to be loyal to the console you were stuck with during childhood.
Want to play the better Turrican game? Download the Genesis version. Want to play the better version of Earthworm Jim 2? Download the SNES version. Want to play the better version of Mortal Kombat Or Sunset Riders? Well, just download the arcade versions lol.

Sorry lads, you're both wrong, Amiga Turrican has 'em beat.
Amiga turrican is just a choppy version of Mega Turrican. Also it's soundtrack overall sounds kinda lame compared with particularly the Sega version.
SNES colors usage and soundtracks on this game appears coming from a Disney game. Doesn't fit for the action of the game.
