  • Part 2 : • Barrel Sealing Piston ...
    A fairly detailed look at a Barrel Sealing Piston Valve for use in a Pneumatic Cannon (air powered potato cannon). Barrel Sealers are the Cadillac of spudgun valves; easy to make and very powerful. This video is intended primarily for spudgun builders and will probably bore the pants off of regular people.

    Glad you liked it.
    I remember how confusing it was for me when I first started looking at theses things so I wanted to give other beginners a little help getting started.
    I'll be building the "alternate" design (end of part 2) for a golf ball cannon very soon and I'll record that build for a much shorter, easier video. (Unless someone beats me to it!)

    Glad you liked the cannon. It was fun to build..
    The song is "Boom Boom" by John Lee Hooker, one of the greatest Blues Men to have ever shared his talent with us mere humans.
    I picked a barrel sealer over the chamber sealer because of how difficult it is to get a perfect seal, which is absolutely required for a chamber sealer, with little more than hand tools. If I had a lathe and a few other items I could probably pull one off but they're pretty difficult as I understand it.

    It's refreshing to see such an educational film. The explanations and detail to the project are awesome. You should make available the plans with part list and so on. Keep up the good work and hope to see more postings.

    Great explanation of how beautifully simple parts and principles can be used to do amazing things!

    Yea, thats real cool, you've got a nice design!
    I've got two suggestions, not saying you've got a bad design, just purely something to think about!
    The first would be to lighten your actual valve a little. The quicker you can move the valve backwards the faster the air can exit the barrel. A heavy valve slows movement and prohibits that!
    The second is, you might try using rubber tubing as the bumper material in the future. A ring of rubber hose makes a great cheap, effective piston bumper!

    This is a very nice valve. Clean constuction and food power. Nice job.

    @rthom86 The Sprinkler valve is a 1" (tough to find a 2" and a Diaphragm valve is generally slower than a Piston valve anyway). The Piston valve is a 2" so the airflow would be about 3 times as much (Pi * Radius Squared). The smaller valve is however a great trigger for the larger valve (the faster you dump the air from behind the piston the faster it actuates which is the key to power).

    Really like your design, you did a nice job! I personally like the tank over barrel piston design because its compact, however the ability to change barrels is also a positive, so I can understand why you'd design it this way as well!
    thanks for sharing, 5 stars, and I'll be subscribing!

    It would if the piston were the same size as the barrel but that's the trick; the piston is bigger than the barrel (2" barrel, 3" piston in the 3" Tee). The size difference is also why, when you dump the air from behind the piston, that it wins the "tug of war" and snaps back; pressure on a 2" hole vs a 3" hole.The bigger the size difference the easier it is to trigger the valve.

    very nice and detailed video of a piston valve it really helps explain things thank you for that oh and by the way when you said i havent took this apart before so it was " INTERESTING and NEW" you sounded exactly like kevin costner from dances with wolves

    @11Randomness
    The modified Sprinkler Valve acts as a trigger (see the video on Modified Sprinkler Valve). I could have just put a big ball valve on the back on the piston valve and fired by opening the ball valve but the sprinkler valve is way faster so it opens the piston valve a little faster (and that means a little more power). It's really *three* valves: The Blowgun triggers the Sprinkler valve which triggers Piston valve! All for more speed and thus more power...

    Sealing seems to be the toughest job to pull off. If you get the o-ring groove right and polish everything it "should" seal. I use a little teflon tape in the groove to make it fit tighter and that seems to help.
    With a lathe though you could cut your own coupling and make a bolt-together back end and avoid the whole o-ring issue. Heck, with some patience I bet you could reproduce a Mauler...

    @evanmcorleytv
    I'd go with 4". It's rated for higher pressure than 6" and a 6" would give you a *huge* volume to fill for each shot (more than double the 4"). There's also a general "rule" that you never make the exhaust port less than half the chamber size which would require a 3" exhaust. A 4" chamber is just a little more practical but if you want to "go big" then a 6" chamber would do the job for sure. (It'd make a great 3" beer can cannon!)

    Actually it's 2.5" sch 40 for tennis balls.
    The blowgun is the actual mod to the valve. It wouldn't work anywhere else.
    There's no reason you couldn't replace the sprinkler valve with a big ball valve though. Anything that allows you to dump the air behind the piston quickly will trigger it.

    @thursday421 Pretty much any town *should* have a serious Plumbing Supply warehouse where actual plumbers go to get their supplies. You should be able to find one in the yellow pages. They'll carry or order anything you need.
    There is usually a Well and Pool Plumbing Supply place as well and they'll carry the 2.5 " Sch 40 pipe for tennis ball barrels *and* the SDR-21 1.5" pipe for golf ball barrels.
    Just tell the guys what you're building and most of them will be glad to help.

    @Ghostxx10 no, I already know what I'm doing, it's an 8 foot by 4 inch, or 6 inch chamber, and a mauler valve.

    i think i understand what goes on a bit inside a piston valve. though one thing still eludes me:
    so when you start filling up the valve, it pushes the piston, causing it to seal the barrel. then, the chamber starts filling up. but if the piston is loose enough to slide up and down the valve, wouldnt the air just flow around the piston and out the barrel?

  • @twobunk
    @twobunk 14 років тому

    @VerbotenDingleberry lol, I know, I still can't decide..... if it is 6 inches, I would make a 4 inch piston, and stick with the 2.5 inch barrel...

    Wood was very easy and fairly light. What do you think would make the lightest piston that would take 100 PSI (o-ringed and check valved)? Since I can change it out, why not try some different designs, eh?

    Hey do you know how to tighten a threaded hex cap onto a threaded adapter without damaging the plastic? I feel like it always gets too tight when i get half way. I can force a regular threaded cap(with a flat surface) on with a strap wrench but any other metal tool can ruin the plastic. Does temperature have anything to do with it? any suggestions please?

    How did you your SCH 40 pressure rated pipe and fittings? Nobody in my area has pressure rated SCH 40 any larger than 2" (Lowe's, Home Depot, hardware stores). One place had 3" and 4" pipe that listed a pressure rating, but they only had DWV fittings in those sizes. Regardless, this is a very helpful video, thanks!

  • @VerbotenDingleberry
    @VerbotenDingleberry  14 років тому

    @Ghostxx10 Never had to solve this one but... I'm thinking a full hex shaped wrench that fit the part would at least distribute the force equally on all six sides. That's probabaly as good as it gets. As for temperature; the colder it is the more brittle it's going to be. Also, if a lubricant wouldn't be a bad thing in this application then Vaseline or "pipe dope" might help.

    I am building a tennis ball cannon, but, I can't decide, I might use a 2inch modded sprinkler valve, or a co-axual 2 inch piston with a 1 inch port, I want both, but I am indecisive... what would you do? PLEASE!!! I AM A BORED 14 YEAR OLD WHO NEEDS TO SHOOT STUFF!!! ( and I am a professional pneumatic "person" I also do advanced combustion spud guns)

    @kbckiwi With that heavy piston I haven't gone much over 100 PSI. If I can engineer a lighter one I'm sure 150 is possible...
