I first saw Franco in La Forza del Destino in 1965 at the "old" Met with Gabriella Tucci and Ettore Bastianini, and then later at the "new" Met in 1968.... I will NEVER forget those performances ...and there will NEVER be another Don Alvaro for me! For me, that role will always be Franco!!! Thankfully there are still recordings of him in this role..... He still has never had any equal ....There here have been a lot of wonderful tenors since then ... but no Franco!! RIP caro Maestro!!
yeongiwon1 I’m 15, and I’m afraid there aren’t great tenors around anymore! Don’t worry though, I’m training in the old ways of opera singing and will always work to improve opera.
Among the most beautiful that is written for tenor & baritone. At the same time one of the least performed duets. It is a really thrilling piece. They were a perfect couple to make the music justice.
How marvellous, Corelli and Merrill compliment each other with such exciting, visceral singing. The drama of the music exceptionally captured. Where is their like today? Thankyou for posting!
Wonderful memories. This was the Saturday afternoon broadcast. That night was L'ELISIR with Scotto, Kraus and Corena. Between the 2 performances you saw and heard a great deal of wonderful stars in one day at the Met. Corelli and Merrill both had large voices so the pairing was good and evenly matched.
+racheleleeba They were in great voice that day for sure. Absolutely splendid. There is a disease called '' Corellidipsia '' & I have it ! See John Steane Singers of the Century Henry Webb
ratboy genius I used the translation found online at this website, I believe. www.opera-arias.com/verdi/la-forza-del-destino/libretto/ It doesn't say who the translator was, as far as I can tell.
I'm very familiar with Franco's Don Alvaro but this is the first time I'm hearing him in this duet. Thank you so much for making it available!

@Not Me Have you heard Martin Muehle? He’s pretty good. And for baritones there are Nikoloz Lagvilava and Ernesto Petti.
XxSaruman82xX I’ll listen to them! By the way, I don’t mean they’re all bad, but opera has declined!
Corelli , the best ever and he is forever.
THRILLING!! Corelli owns every role that he every sang!!!!
Grandioso Corelli!Come baritono in quest'opera preferisco Bastianini...ma bravissimo anche Merrill...
