While a lot of people dont like this version of the story... i really love it. I understand that by having venom be man-made rather than an alien , they discard all the awesome lore that comes with venom. But on the other hand, they made venom feel more personal by connecting peter's dad to the story and making eddie a childhood friend. The concept of eddie being a childhood friend to peter was so good that it even made it to the spectacular spider man. I guess my only problem with the story is that peter didnt have the suit for too long..... i guess he needed to be with it for a longer time.
Me too, I actually kind of prefer this origin as it makes a lot more narrative sense for why Eddie would hate Peter, and his anger fuels his bond with the symbiote. I especially like how this origin was adapted in arguably one of the best adaptions of Spiderman, i.e the Spectacular Spiderman animated show (2008), where that show much like the comic had Eddie and Peter as childhood friends, whose fathers were scientists partners, and mothers were friends, and they both died, but Peter and Eddie retained a friendship and while Eddie becomes a college lab assistant to Curt Conners, Peter became Spiderman, but his time as Spiderman and possessed by the symbiote simultaneously leading to Eddie getting fired and resentful of Peter's inconsideration and lack of care of others, thus once Peter gets it off and insists on attempting to destroy the symbiote, and thereby destroying Eddies last chance to get his job back, the sybiote in a lastage effort bonds to Eddie and thereby creating a perfect unison of Eddie and the Symbiote's hatred for Peter and Spiderman thus creating Venom
Exactly making Eddie Brock a childhood friend of Peter gives the venom story a much more personal twist for Peter rather then having a guy who just decided to take his anger out on spider man
I also preferred back when venom was part of a alien symbiote race that just bonds with people before they added the whole knull thing and now symbiote's are one of the strongest things out there along with several versions present.

@FellowTraveler-tu1qv Well in the beginning, Miles was nothing but Nega Peter Parker. Spider-Verse decided to try and reinvent and make him different. And good thing too.
To this day, I still want to know what happened to Eddie after being taken by the Beetle in a later story. Then a new Venom was introduced to fight Miles. This is a great story and holds up as a reinvention!
Venom's story here fits perfectly in the wider arc of the pressures of capitalism & bad actors ruining the possibilities of well-intentioned men that defines Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man.
Ultimate Carnage was when I started to see flaws with Bendis' writing. Gwen's death was random and only there for shock value. It also becomes annoying when I think that all of volume 1 is just one year and Gwen's death only happened months after Uncle Ben's. Bendis did great work on Gwen's character but ultimately she was fridged just like the 616 version.
I also believe the symbiote being man made makes a lot more sense for its weakness to be fire and sound. It being a chaotic alien that destroys everything it touches but being weak to fire was really hard to take seriously sometimes 🤷🏽♂️
So close to 100k my man! I’ll be here celebrating when you get there. You’ve introduced, and reintroduced, many comics I’ve passed over and I can’t thank you enough for it. This video was fantastic too.
Since the entire Ultimate Spider-Man run has just been re-released as a hardcover over here in Germany, I'm currently reading the whole series. I absolutely get your fascination for this take on Peter Parker's whole story. Though some of the art doesn't click with me, the storytelling is amazing and unbelievably emotional, especial at the very end with Peter's death and funeral.
I grew up with the TAS origin and the amazing Spider-Man comic book original one. And the change on the ultimate comics is in perfect line with every change on the ultimate Spider-Man universe. The industrial more high tech capitalistic environment. But the arc is do small in Peter's life. Like i would for him to have the suit longer showing a deeper in time effect like the original run.
I definitely feel like, Venom being this sort of man made abomination that consumes humans and twist the host made him more scary for me personally, especially coupled with imagery they added in when carnage gets into the mix
The Ultimate Spider-Man game was my intro to the Ultimate Universe and even as a kid I was very intrigued by the reinvention of Eddie and the Black Suit
As a kid, the video game was my introduction to Venom back on Christmas Day of 2006, and he immediately became one of my favorite Spider-Man villains. After I had already seen the teaser trailer for the black suit in Spider-Man 3, I got a better idea of what it was from the intro of the game. And because of that, I began to connect everything and realized Venom would appear in the then upcoming Spider-Man movie. And the merchandise and toys got me hyped. I couldn't see Spider-Man 3 in theaters because I was scared Venom would "jump out of the screen like they do in the movies" and kill us all, without my mom present. So later, when the DVD came out, I just skipped all the way through, confused on when he would show up, fearing he wasn't in the movie. Until I watched it all the way through, feeling baffled on Bully Maguire, and, even as a 7 year old, was extremely upset at how and when Venom was portrayed, cast, and designed. Even 11 years later, seeing Venom 2018, I was still mad that Venom wasn't that body horror nightmare that he was portrayed in the Ultimate comics. Obviously, he wasn't like that in the original series, but like I mentioned before, the Ultimate version was my introduction to the character. Even now, I still wanna see a scary, badder-ass Venom with elements of horror.
Ultimate venom looks so freaking cool I also find it awesome that the spectacular Spider-Man cartoon used the backstory of ultimate Spiderman comics for Eddie Brock.
I really liked ultimate venom story it was really awesome story and plus we got a great adaptation of this story for the video game ultimate Spider-Man which was really awesome game that told a great story for Ultimate venom and Eddie brock at least in my opinion.
The game handled the follow up story way better than the books. Way tighter. A few details in the books were neat, but i think the game had a lot more discipline and focus.
This Venom is one of my favorites rly. The "tumor" tentacles that grow around him is a pretty cool idea. The only thing missing is the huge white spider on his chest, I rly felt the lack of it while reading USM.
Bendis' initial take on Venom being overdone is ironically still relevant today. In light of all the absurd power creep of the Symbiotes in recent years ala Knull etc I still think Venom's reinvention is one the Ultimate Universe success stories. Much like Ultimate Sinister/Apocalypse. It's taking what is known and giving it a fresh spin. Unlike say, Ultimate Deadpool...
I've always loved the Alien Symbiote storyline in the original earth 616 Spider-Man comics The ultimate spider man symbiote story line although being my favorite Is story arc in ultimate spider man This has unlimited potential Happy Birthday to my favorite Spider-Man Dan Gilvezan From Spider-Man and his amazing friends who is 73 today fantastic video as always thank you Owen
I can see how this story influenced both the Spectacular cartoon and the TASM movies to a certain extent. This probably might have even been part of the plot for a third TASM chapter. Ultimate spider-man truly does feature many of the best versions of some of his iconic villains. Please also consider doing a video on the ultimate universe’s version of Mysterio! He was my favorite villain in that series!
It wasn’t going to be part of the plot for TASM 3 where Denis Leary revealed it would have been a resurrection plot and he was supposed to come back. Venom was always getting a separate solo movie like how Kraven wasn’t allowed to be in No Way Home.
This was my go to Spider-Man comics back in the day. My uncle bought me the full trade paperbacks, from Origins to Death, and Miles Morales for my birthday. It was a glorious experience.
For me, this is the definitive venom origin. The idea of the symbiote amplifying your healing to cure cancer, and that becoming amplifying all your negative qualities too, is a great change. And as you say, that fight in the rain is the image that most sticks out in USM.
Harry Osborn from Amazing Spider Man 2 movie and the new Spider Man 2 game resemble Ultimate Brock/Venom much more than the 616 version. Even tough the idea of Harry becoming Venom came from the Ultimate Spider Man tv show.
Lot of people mistake Venom vein a full fledged villain. His 616 version was a villain light before he squashed his rival wry with spidey and took to becoming a lethal protector. But this version here is truly an evil Venom, prob the most evil one ever honestly. Caring for nothing but destruction and Peter, can’t be negotiated with, and it’s constantly shapeshifting looking like a monstrosity
May be biased, but I like my version more. For anyone who knows "Evangelion", in my version, the symbiotes are corrupted LCL life forms born from the absence of humans who left Instrumentality, but were unable to cope with such absence. Because the Spider serves as a reality totem, Venom's initial goal is to search for Asuka and Shinji (who were taken away from their home reality to witness a universe filled with actual heroes in an attempt at healing), and consume them. But as you can imagine by the other symbiotes, plans evolve a little.
Dare I say the longevity of this story line is more to do with the video game, which brought it to the attention of the masses, than the comic itself. I would also argue that whilst Eddie himself didn’t reappear, the initial story continued to have a lasting impact on the comic. It directly led to Carnage and then the Clone Saga (you didn’t even mention that one), which were excellent story arcs, forcing Peter to contend with his father's legacy even without Venom. I do think that Eddie being a creep with Gwen is by design. That’s supposed to be the point you realise that he isn’t someone Peter should have been trusting, they may have been childhood friends but they had both changed and Eddie was not a nice person anymore. You get hints of this with how his roommate avoids him, Eddie pretending it’s because the roommate is a jerk. It’s not until the end when Peter finally meets the roommate alone who states that it’s the other way around.
I like how eddie and peter were friends which is why i absolutely love ther spiderman 2 version of venom (the recent game) as it also has a similar tie in.
Is the “Inheritance” cover at 1:28 an homage to or inspired by another classic image? I thought Tetsuo in AKIRA, but the closest I could come to a reference was the cover for Epic’s translation of issue 3, but that’s just a slightly similar basic pose. Any help would be appreciated, this is really bothering me for some reason.
Owen, this is a great video, and perfect for Halloween 🎃! While I'm not completely on board with, or tge treatment of, ULTIMATE VENOM, I do love the aspect of Brock and Peter having a brotherly Bond and it being tied with the symbiote. Alien or not, this was a very good concept and add a lot of layers to the relationship !( I also enjoyed it in The Spectacular Spiderman series!) Though, It still feels like Brian Michael Bendis doesn't really like Venom as it took a video game and a later story to at least remember Eddie.. that said, I still enjoy your coverage and how you present this video! Great job my friend and have a Long, Happy, Halloween! 🎃❤
Came here from remembering the old game on Xbox OG. Venom 's first ever words: "Both our fathers died to create me! Now you will too!" Fucking chills, That was the opening tutorial.
*spoilers for the spider-man video game* I love how Spider-man 2 blended this story of venom with the Venom alien lore, with trying to use it as a means to cure disease but due to it alien origin they couldn't. it worked so well for the games and since they are making the video game spider-man more or less from the ultimate universe I think it works really well for it!
I’m really excited to see what will happen with this new Ultimate run. It’s been said that it would follow Peter in his later years. Even though Peters death was perfect I always wanted to see Peter reach his prime marry Mary Jane and continue to be the greatest superhero.
It is unpopular opinion, but many elements of venom re-invention were reintroduced in tasm 2. Just look at the similarities: - Harry is a childhood friend, came out of nowhere (much like Eddie) - his father worked so much in the past with Peter’s on some big cure that can solve cancer problem - eventually Richard’s colleague goes down bad, so in order to protect the invention from bad hands RP bounds it on its own genetic material making bio-stuff applicable to only Parker bloodline
This is probably the Venom people will prefer if they only know Venom from adaptions, since most adaptions like Bendis mostly get Venom wrong and comic Venom is far more (anti) heroic than what people expect. Sadly a lot of the problems I have with this Venom were fixed in that Ultimate Spider-Man video game but while some of it did get adapted into the Ultimate comics it quickly goes its own way instead. (By the way you got your stories criss crossed the game ends with a no longer cannibalistic classically designed Venom thats implied to become a antihero, the comic was the one with the red eyes and had a very different ending) The description that Venom is a dark mirror that reflects what Peter would become if he lost his morals and responsibility does not actually describe the 2 most popular versions of the character, 616!Eddie and 616!Flash. In fact Eddie is VERY earnest about protecting innocent people (heck he is worthy of Mjnor and of being Captain Universe) and has been a good guy longer than he has been a villain. If you can find them I would recommend reading Mike Costa's run on Venom and then Donny Cate's as that would give a good summary of Eddie and Donny's run is the sequel to Mike's run. (Plus you'd get a bit of Flash as well)
I’ll never be a fan of the “Venom created in a lab” story trope. I’m perfectly fine with anyone else liking it. But I think it’s a waste cuz then you can’t have Knull and Carnage and stuff in a sensible way. 🤷♂️
This reminds me of Spider-Man the animated series in a way. Venom and the Symbiote are so interesting, but only after a small handful of stories, they are both just never seen again despite the series lasting long after them. What’s up with that?
I think Insomniac found a good way of incorporating both origin stories -- the symbiote is still alien but is used by scientists as a way to cure diseases. I thought it was a nice balance of both versions.
He was the inciting incident for Ultimates 3, as well! Didn't do much except be the bridge for Spider-Man to join, but worth mentioning. It's not worth
In my opinion the usm show's venom takes the best parts from 1610 venom but then lets the symbiote have a personality of its own too. And I find venom being made from peter's blood really compelling, it makes for a deeper connection and reinforces some of the general themes. I think peter having an aspect of his powers that can easily be dangerous also fits well with "great power, great responsibility"
The Ultimate game brought me to my first comics, I love it to death. However, what’s up with the Ultimate’s first covers? They look like they’re made of plastic 😂
nahhh i still like the original venom and the two or three venoms from TV (80, spectacular even unlimited) Carnage on the other hand is a good reinvention because is Peter + venom i even like the carnage from Ultimate Spiderman (tv)
There are a lot of things wrong with this reinvention of Venom. Why call a cancer cure "venom"? Eddie takes another symbiote jar that hasn't been bonded to Peter so why does it have the same powers?
I hate these kinds of retcons. 90s Spiderman cartoon was the best adaptation with him coming from the moon, which is great for the alien race of symbiotes while not being a slapped together retcon like in the original comics since they originally just wanted him to have a costume change.
The black suit is definitely the 2.0 version of spider man they never even bothered to put the white hand patchs in the suit and they mess up eddy block and venom instead of the lethal protecter hero he’s just a villain and it’s called the purple suit not black suit really eating people to survive that’s stupid
While I think the angle they made for venom being a man made mistake by peters father is interesting. Eddie really is worse off in ultimate universe fashion being just being way to gross and unsufferable to take advantage of the childhood friend/ symbolic brotherhood dynamic other superhero villain vibes have. Venom also doesn't feel as powerful as he should be me despite not having a sound weakness. I honestly think Conrad marcus was the cooler venom in this universe
20:12 I disagree this hasn’t aged well. Its aged perfectly well. Your suppose to think Eddie is a creep. People don’t like it because they like antihero venom and this one is straight up a villain.
The main run of comics did everything you said was a missed opportunity. Why go over the same ground again, that’s the opposite of the point of the ultimate line? Dragging things out is one of comics worse features, one story and done was a breathe of fresh air. Eddie being a selfish creep to Gwen, an indication of who he is, not the idealised version from Peter’s head, so becoming Venom doesn’t come from nowhere.
My problem with this Venom is that it's just dumb monster who eats everything he sees and just there is no explanation how the hell scientists created him

But there is not sound or fire in the void of space, both require air/oxygen to exist.
That just sounds like a lack of astronomy based knowledge on your part. People always hate what they don’t understand I guess. 😂😂
This is my favorite version of Venom.
Ultimate Spiderman game is still dope.
The Ultimate Spider-Man game was my intro to the Ultimate Universe and even as a kid I was very intrigued by the reinvention of Eddie and the Black Suit
my favorite version of spider-man & venom
This is one of the only comics I’ve read from start to finish. I loved all of it and every different takes they took on the established characters
Ultimate venom looks so freaking cool I also find it awesome that the spectacular Spider-Man cartoon used the backstory of ultimate Spiderman comics for Eddie Brock.
There's smtg about the art duringt this arc especially the confrontation scenes that are just stuck in my mind. It's incredibly well made.
Ultimate Venom is also my second favorite look for Venom, something about the people tint is cool to me
Purple.
In light of all the absurd power creep of the Symbiotes in recent years ala Knull etc
I still think Venom's reinvention is one the Ultimate Universe success stories. Much like Ultimate Sinister/Apocalypse. It's taking what is known and giving it a fresh spin. Unlike say, Ultimate Deadpool...
Donny cates venom is top tier
One of the best iterations of Spiderman and Venom
Ultimate venom is my fav version!
Harry Osborn from Amazing Spider Man 2 movie and the new Spider Man 2 game resemble Ultimate Brock/Venom much more than the 616 version.
Even tough the idea of Harry becoming Venom came from the Ultimate Spider Man tv show.
Si también hay venom no es un alienigena
Do you like hobgoblin ultimate ?
Man, I am so hyped for Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man relaunch.
Man, Ultimate Venom is awesome, nice video Owen 💯.
I like how eddie and peter were friends which is why i absolutely love ther spiderman 2 version of venom (the recent game) as it also has a similar tie in.
I like how spiderman 3 used the 616 story for venom with usm elements
"OUR FATHERS DIED TO CREATE ME-- AND NOW YOU WILL TOO"
Is the “Inheritance” cover at 1:28 an homage to or inspired by another classic image?
Thank you for mentioning David Michelinie as a creator also 👍
Of course!
Came here from remembering the old game on Xbox OG.
Venom 's first ever words: "Both our fathers died to create me! Now you will too!"
Fucking chills, That was the opening tutorial.
Let's hope the new Ultimate Spider-man reboot does justice to to og. Just sad it won't be the same Peter
would love to see ur take and analysis on Venom in Marvel’s Spiderman 2
They need to remake this game one of my favorite growing up when the game cube was a thing
Why do I suddenly hear Eminem?
If only I could get that through the copyright overlords...
I’m really excited to see what will happen with this new Ultimate run. It’s been said that it would follow Peter in his later years. Even though Peters death was perfect I always wanted to see Peter reach his prime marry Mary Jane and continue to be the greatest superhero.
It was perfect until they brought him back
It is unpopular opinion, but many elements of venom re-invention were reintroduced in tasm 2.
Just look at the similarities:
- Harry is a childhood friend, came out of nowhere (much like Eddie)
- his father worked so much in the past with Peter’s on some big cure that can solve cancer problem
- eventually Richard’s colleague goes down bad, so in order to protect the invention from bad hands RP bounds it on its own genetic material making bio-stuff applicable to only Parker bloodline
THIS was my spider man growing up that and Tobey's and Andrews
I actually like this version one of my favorites of venom
I was freaking out with spider man 2 with all the story stuff I was going mad.
I personally think this is the strongest single arc.
Man ultimate venom had the best design
that a killer intro youve got there.
(By the way you got your stories criss crossed the game ends with a no longer cannibalistic classically designed Venom thats implied to become a antihero, the comic was the one with the red eyes and had a very different ending)
The description that Venom is a dark mirror that reflects what Peter would become if he lost his morals and responsibility does not actually describe the 2 most popular versions of the character, 616!Eddie and 616!Flash.
Pues knull no apareció hasta después de esto
This reminds me of Spider-Man the animated series in a way. Venom and the Symbiote are so interesting, but only after a small handful of stories, they are both just never seen again despite the series lasting long after them. What’s up with that?
My only problem with this adaptation is how short Peters time with the symbiote is, becuse those are my favorite spidey stories
Thank you -- well-scripted as always, and I enjoy hearing your points of view!
Much appreciated!
The Ultimates version of Venom was so aweful. I'm so glad the new Spider-man 2 video game didn't use the same crappy origin story!
I think Insomniac found a good way of incorporating both origin stories -- the symbiote is still alien but is used by scientists as a way to cure diseases. I thought it was a nice balance of both versions.
Totally agree and I like the way they made venom Harry instead of Eddie randomly getting it
Still my favorite version of venom.
He was the inciting incident for Ultimates 3, as well! Didn't do much except be the bridge for Spider-Man to join, but worth mentioning. It's not worth
The tv adaptation is underrated
In my opinion the usm show's venom takes the best parts from 1610 venom but then lets the symbiote have a personality of its own too. And I find venom being made from peter's blood really compelling, it makes for a deeper connection and reinforces some of the general themes. I think peter having an aspect of his powers that can easily be dangerous also fits well with "great power, great responsibility"
I like vemon being a alien because Peter fight. People from sisince and vemon being not from siescnis is reflection
9:29 I prefer the Ultimate Black Suit over the 616 Version
The Ultimate game brought me to my first comics, I love it to death. However, what’s up with the Ultimate’s first covers? They look like they’re made of plastic 😂
nahhh i still like the original venom and the two or three venoms from TV (80, spectacular even unlimited)
Carnage on the other hand is a good reinvention because is Peter + venom i even like the carnage from Ultimate Spiderman (tv)
I actually thought the insomniac venom was going to be like Ultimate. They juked me hard.
I mean kinda
The black suit is definitely the 2.0 version of spider man they never even bothered to put the white hand patchs in the suit and they mess up eddy block and venom instead of the lethal protecter hero he’s just a villain and it’s called the purple suit not black suit really eating people to survive that’s stupid
Idk if u mentioned the tv adaptation
While I think the angle they made for venom being a man made mistake by peters father is interesting. Eddie really is worse off in ultimate universe fashion being just being way to gross and unsufferable to take advantage of the childhood friend/ symbolic brotherhood dynamic other superhero villain vibes have. Venom also doesn't feel as powerful as he should be me despite not having a sound weakness. I honestly think Conrad marcus was the cooler venom in this universe
Wasn't he in Ultimates 3? Or do we not talk about it. Also appears in Shartered Dimensions, but at that point, I'm just being pedantic
If I remember correctly that was a robot version of Venom in Ultimates 3
While there's no doubt the new ultimate universe (Earth-6160) will have Venom, I highly doubt it'll be the one like the old ultimate universe...
I wonder what Knull would think of this Venom?
20:12 I disagree this hasn’t aged well. Its aged perfectly well. Your suppose to think Eddie is a creep. People don’t like it because they like antihero venom and this one is straight up a villain.
For me i think venom earth 1610 is the most realistic one
I prefer Eddie Brock being a Childhood Friend of Peter Parker
Combine that part of his character with a rewrite of Knull's lore and venom is the best spider man charcter
My problem with this Venom is that it's just dumb monster who eats everything he sees and just there is no explanation how the hell scientists created him
Nice
Thanks!
That's why I don't really like the 1610 universe they kept rushing story-lines or making it worse due to not having any time
