    I thought Rush was a much better movie that had the right combination of action, drama, and humor. The relationship between the two drivers was also compelling.

      Except Rush had two unlikable characters as its subject.

    • @GeriatricFan1963

      @@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat They're both somewhat complex characters: James Hunt is an anti-authoritarian womaniser who has his wife leave him due to his self-destructive behaviour and ends up having to reluctantly sell out to sponsors in order to win the championship, and Niki Lauda is a cold, calculating workaholic who survives a horrific and life-changing accident and realises that his relationship with his wife is important enough for him to give up a chance at a championship. So they both have major flaws to their personalities, but that's what makes them interesting and vulnerable. I also love how blunt Niki is, and how playful James is. They play off of each other fantastically well, and having them start off disliking each other and then eventually gradually coming to respect and stand up for one another is compelling to watch.
      Characters that never do anything challenging or unlikeable to the audience tend not to create much drama or tension; you always know what they're gonna do. In the case of Rush, if you made it truer to real-life and had James and Niki start off as both incredibly likeable guys who get along, then you'd have to find a completely different angle that's perhaps less organic to the real life story, because the conflict would have to come from elsewhere. (I.E. Ford V Ferrari, where the Ford execs and corporate culture are the main source of conflict for Ken Miles/Carroll Shelby; it's Leo Beebe who is portrayed as the antagonist; that fits the story better rather than having the main conflict be Miles and Shelby; even when they fight in the film it's an extension of the conflict with Ford.)

    If you want a melodramatic film with great racing footage throughout, watch 1966's "Grand Prix". It's a soap opera but has a solid cast and racing footage that was filmed during actual grands prix.

    • @colten53
      @colten53 7 місяців тому +3

      The racing footage in that movie is some of the best put to film imo. It really conveys the speed and the danger really well and you can actually see how sloped the turns on. Not to mention you see up close and personal how those guys were riding around in metal tubes with steering wheels

    Come on, this is not a race movie it's a movie about a particular time of Enzo's life. Very easy to tell what kind of movie it's going to be from the trailers. Looking forward to some depth.

    • @MisterMonsieur
      @MisterMonsieur 4 місяці тому +3

      The trailer made no promises, but the premise did. Imagine a film about Elon Musk. What's to be expected? PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter? Now imagine that movie is actually about Elon's friendship with his accountant. That's it. Everything else is just noise in the background. It might be true, but that's not Elon's legend. That's not the film anyone cares to see. Mann betrayed the "promise of the premise" and disappointed his audience, of who many of us trusted on reputation alone.

      One hour in and he is having an affair and he has lost his oldest son. But there is not enough racing, which he loved, and too much drama. Sorry it was too slow. Adam Driver played Gucci and Ferrari ! Michael Mann has a minimalist approach which is sometimes crisp other times it’s too dry.

    Couldn't the same thing be said about Oppenheimer? Most people want a movie focused on the bomb, and meanwhile we got a melodrama about the man's life. Didn't mean it wasn't a good movie. I hope that I like it because I love Michael Mann's directing and storytelling style.

    • @MisterMonsieur
      @MisterMonsieur 4 місяці тому +2

      @@123rockfan Correct. "Oppenheimer" gives us a window into the man's thinking and the influences that weighed on him. It contemplates on the morality and necessity of introducing such destructive power; the irony of "saving" the world by making it so much more fragile. A gripping character study, for certain. Mann's "Ferrari" is only incidentally a movie about Ferrari, which exploits the brand and its legend to sell us a domestic melodrama that's neither uncommon or unique.

      Yeah I still can't wrap my head around the guy who made automatic gunfire LOUD in Heat because automatic gunfire is LOUD, also thinks that Gran Turismo 4's collision and takeoff physics were what to use.
      I've watched racing for 36 years, seen many accidents, several deaths live & via TV and many take off accidents. Cars don't fly like that from hitting objects unless they are flat-bottomed and even then it's rare.
      Cars don't bounce off much, they especially don't bounce off telephone poles....
      The CG flying cars (and it happened twice!) were truly awful.
      As was the editing. Particularly into the mountains where 6 cars running nose-to-tail becomes 2,with no other vehicle in sight. Appalling editing/continuity.
      Made Le Mans 66 / Ford vs Ferrari look competent in comparison. At least the sound in this was much better than FvF/LM66 (racing cars are also loud, much too loud to have a chat between drivers in different cars, Mangold...) and the cars actually speed up towards the end, instead of looking like they're going about 80, max, which they do in the pre-Rome racing scenes.
      Howard, McQueen & Frankenheimer have all done it so much better.

    Chef Boyardi ( isn’t that an American microwave food brand)

  • @markiangooley
    @markiangooley 7 місяців тому +3

    The real Chef Boy-Ar-Dee was Ettore (later Hector) Boiardi (accent on the second syllable) and he was really Italian and that’s really he in the earlier television commercials. So sounding like Boiardi isn’t completely absurd.
    To me, he doesn’t sound ridiculous in the commercials. I’m sure there are some real ones on UA-cam so I’ll watch them again (I haven’t in years). Maybe I’m forgetting and he does sound a bit hammy and self-parodying.
    EDIT: there’s a 1953 commercial on UA-cam. The chef isn’t playing up his own accent as far as I can tell. Maybe in later years he slipped into self-parody, but at least in 1953 he just sounds like an Italian who’s picked up English over the years, a little nervous. Which of course wouldn’t completely work for portraying an Italian supposedly speaking Italian, either.

The acting was very mundane, one doesn't empathize with the characters. Even Penelope's portrayal isn't engaging. How did the story fall so flat? This is no "Ford v Ferrari" storytelling. And the CGI crash sequences are laughably bad, how did Mann approve of them is a mystery to me. I really, really wanted to like this movie. But I cannot recommend it.

Just concede what so many already see themselves: Mann made a disjointed movie that neglects the promise of the trailer to serve up a rushed, disjointed drama. Focusing on the domestic drama -- which is neither unique nor uncommon -- makes this movie only incidentally about Ferrari. It forgot the "promise of the premise," which is always a mistake.
